JANUARY 2005 (Austin, Texas) – The Live Oak Coffeehouse kicks off its Spring
2005 season with a musical performance by the inimitable Christine Kane. The
7:30 p.m. show on Friday, January 14, will benefit Westcave Preserve, a nature
preserve in southwest Travis County.
Admission is $10 or a season pass at the door. Gourmet coffee and pastries are
included in the price of admission.
As always, the concert will be smoke-free and alcohol-free, putting the emphasis
on the music and the musicians. Three-quarters of the gate goes to the
performers, and one-quarter to the selected charity. Since the coffeehouse is an
all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization, all of the money from admissions
paid at the door and season passes goes to the performers and the charity.
Westcave Preserve is a 30-acre preserve on the Pedernales River, located about
40 miles from downtown Austin. The property is managed by the not-for-profit
Westcave Preserve Corporation, which was established in 1976 to purchase the
land surrounding a popular limestone canyon with a waterfall and caves. In 1983,
the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) paid off the debt held by the
corporation and leased the property for one dollar a year to Westcave Preserve
Corp. to operate the site as an educational enterprise. The preserve is open on
weekends, with four public tours a day, and on weekdays by reservation only. For
more details, see the Web site at www.westcave.org.
For the last 11 years, Christine Kane has inspired audiences not only through
her voice and songs, but also with her humor and her seamless ability to connect
with the human spirit. A nationally touring singer-songwriter, Christine has
become known and praised for her organic and raw mix of tight acoustic textures
and rhythms, as well as for her earthy, elegant voice, and poignant lyric
purity.
Christine has released five CDs on her own record label, Firepink Music.
“Right Outta Nowhere” (released in June 2004) was featured on listening
stations in Borders Bookstores nationally. “Rain and Mud and Wild and Green”
was chosen as one of Borders’ “Best of 2003,” and was critically acclaimed
by the national press, including The Washington Post, which wrote of
Christine’s work: “Reflective, ironic and often open-ended...curious
scenarios that leave you guessing about the nature of things. Impressive song
craft.” Her Web site is at www.christinekane.com.
Doors open at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 14, at the Live Oak Unitarian
Universalist Church, located at 3315 El Salido Parkway, Cedar Park. For driving
directions, visit the church’s Web site at www.liveoakuu.org or call 219-9008.
