FEBRUARY 2005 (Austin, Texas) – The Live Oak Coffeehouse has a sweetheart of a
show for you and your sweetie! We’re hosting the extraordinary Freebo and the
outstanding Jim Photoglo this month, performing in a benefit for the Humane
Society of Austin. Dave Hooper will open the show, playing with guitarist Jeff
Tveraas. The 7:30 p.m. show on Friday, February 11, will kick off a romantic
weekend just before Valentine’s Day.
Admission is $10 or a season pass at the door. Gourmet coffee and pastries are
included in the price of admission.
As always, the concert will be smoke-free and alcohol-free, putting the emphasis
on the music and the musicians. Three-quarters of the gate goes to the
performers, and one-quarter to the selected charity. Since the coffeehouse is an
all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization, all of the money from admissions
paid at the door and season passes goes to the performers and the charity.
This month’s concert will benefit the Humane Society SPCA of Austin and Travis
County. The Austin Humane Society is an independent, non-profit organization
that is solely supported by private donations and does not receive funds from
government entities or ongoing support from national associations. The Austin
Humane Society does not euthanize healthy animals. Instead, a positive
alternative to euthanasia is offered at no cost to taxpayers or the community.
Animals accepted into the Adoption Center are kept as long as it takes to find a
new, loving home. The only case in which there is a
need for euthanasia is if an animal is suffering or aggressive. For more
details, see the organization’s Web site at www.austinspca.com.
Jim Photoglo has received international acclaim for six solo albums, two with
rhythm and bluegrass band Run C&W, and a new release with the Vinyl Kings. The
Vinyl Kings' “A Little Trip” has been featured on the front page of CD Baby
and has remained on their Bestseller and Editor's Pick lists. Jim is a regular
performer at Nashville's Bluebird Café, and has been featured on Turner South's
“Live at the Bluebird Café” and “The Songwriter Sessions” on Nashville
Public Radio. As a songwriter with numerous credits in various genres, two of
Jim's songs reached #1 on the country charts: Alabama's “Hometown Honeymoon”
and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's “Fishin' in the Dark.” Lately, he has been
combining concerts with songwriting workshops at colleges, clubs, and
coffeehouses across the nation.
Freebo has been known primarily as a bass and tuba player. For ten years, he
recorded and toured with Bonnie Raitt. Freebo's fretless bass appears on her
first seven albums (recorded for Warner Bros.). He also toured and recorded with
Maria Muldaur (“Midnight at the Oasis”), John Mayall (“A Sense of
Place”), and The Bluesbusters. In addition, he has had the great honor to play
with many blues legends, including Roy Buchanan, Buddy Guy, Arthur (Big Boy)
Cruddup, Muddy Waters, and Mississippi Fred MacDowell. Freebo is also presenting
classes for symposiums and works shows, as well as performing solo and with Jim
Photoglo. He is currently working on a new album.
Doors open at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 11, at the Live Oak Unitarian
Universalist Church, located at 3315 El Salido Parkway, Cedar Park. For driving
directions, visit the church’s Web site at www.liveoakuu.org or call 219-9008.
