MAY 2005 (Austin, Texas) – The Live Oak Coffeehouse this month presents
Abi Tapia, Jan Seides, and Sharon Bousquet in a musical performance to
benefit Austin SafePlace. The show is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on
Friday, May 13, at the Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church in
Northwest Austin/Cedar Park.
Admission is $10 or a season pass at the door. Gourmet coffee and
pastries are included in the price of admission.
As always, the concert will be smoke-free and alcohol-free, putting the
emphasis on the music and the musicians. Three-quarters of the gate
goes to the performers, and one-quarter to the selected charity. Since
the coffeehouse is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization, all
of the money from admissions paid at the door and season passes goes to
the performers and the charity.
Since 1998, Austin SafePlace has provided a wide spectrum of services
to survivors of violence, including a 24-hour hotline; a 100-bed Family
Shelter for battered adults and children; accompaniment and support at
area hospitals for recent rape survivors; specialized recreational and
therapeutic services for children; in-court support and accompaniment
for survivors of violence seeking justice and protection through the
legal system; individual and group counseling for children and adults;
46 apartment units of transitional housing for families leaving
shelter; on-site child care for shelter and transitional housing
residents; on-site K-8 education for shelter residents; and resource
advocacy, to help link survivors of violence who are homeless or
struggling financially with short-term emergency assistance. For more
details, visit the organization’s Web site at www.austin-safeplace.org.
With her guitar and CDs in tow, Abi Tapia has been taking to stages all
over the US and steadily building a dedicated base of listeners. Abi's
songs are infused with tension -- a tug-of-war between aching to leave
in "Precious Things" and wanting to stay in "Galesburg," or the longing
for life to slow down in "Motion Sickness" and then in "Chocolate," the
euphoria of "dancing, spinning, sweating." But these songs don't
suggest indecisiveness or insincerity; rather, they tell a story of the
desire to occupy each corner of life. She is based in Austin, Texas and
is a member of the Austin Conspiracy of Performing Songwriters.
Singer/songwriter Jan Seides's (pronounced Sigh-deez) songs combine
down-home honesty with uptown sophistication. Jan has an eclectic
writing and performing style: folk to pop to jazz. She has won major
awards, regional to national songwriting competitions. She is based in
Austin, Texas and is a member of the Austin Conspiracy of Performing
Songwriters.
Texas-based and Philadelphia-born artist Sharon Bousquet uses her
extensive gifts with a pen and a guitar to enlighten and inspire. This
is contemporary acoustic music that is both smart and earthy. Sharon
uses the words of a poet and the strength of her unique guitar style to
build bridges between spiritual truths and every day stories of life.
Relationship songs are shaped into powerful tools for change.
Doors open at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 13, at the Live Oak Unitarian
Universalist Church, located at 3315 El Salido Parkway, Cedar Park. For
driving directions, visit the church’s Web site at www.liveoakuu.org or
