AUGUST 2005 (Austin, Texas) ? A series of five concerts will be
presented this fall by the Live Oak Coffeehouse, beginning with a CD
release party for Live Oak's own Eddie Collins for his new CD, Golden
Wings. This show will be a benefit for the National Scoliosis
Foundation.
Normally, the concerts are on the second Friday of the month, but
Eddie's concert will be on Friday, August 26, to allow for everyone to
return from their summer travels. Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m., with
doors opening at 7:00 p.m.
Performing alongside Eddie will be several legendary Austin musicians,
including Mike Montgomery on fiddle, Mark Rubin on bass, and Paul
Sweeney on mandolin. Fourteen-year-old prodigy mandolinist/singer Sarah
Jarosz, who recently performed at the Country Music Association (CMA)
awards show with Earl Scruggs and Ricky Skaggs, will open the show.
Admission is $10 or a season pass at the door. Gourmet coffee and
pastries are included in the price of admission.
The Live Oak Coffeehouse has been smoke-free from its inception in
1998, before it was cool or legally mandatory!
The coffeehouse, a community outreach program for the Live Oak UU
Church, also is alcohol-free, putting the emphasis on the music and the
musicians. Three-quarters of the gate goes to the performers, and
one-quarter to the selected charity. Since the coffeehouse is an
all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization, all of the money from
admissions paid at the door and season passes goes to the performers
and the charity.
The National Scoliosis Foundation (NSF) is a patient-led nonprofit
organization dedicated since 1976 to helping children, parents, adults,
and health-care providers to understand the complexities of spinal
deformities such as scoliosis. We are involved in all aspects of
scoliosis support, whether the issue is early detection through
screening programs, treatment methods, pain management, or patient
care. Our focus is on promoting public awareness, providing reliable
information, fostering ongoing research in the field, and educating and
nurturing the community of those affected by scoliosis. For more
information, visit the NSF?s Web site at www.scoliosis.org.
Collins was the founder of 5-String Quarterly and has authored
instruction books for both banjo and guitar. His career was highlighted
as the cover story in the May 2002 issue of Banjo NewsLetter.
Previously, his performing career was documented on the syndicated TV
show, Texas Music Cafe. As a recording artist, Rise & Shine represents
Eddie's fourth work--two with his band, the High Stakes Rollers and
another solo project of honky-tonk country music, Guitar Slingers &
Texas Music.
The Live Oak Coffeehouse Concert Series has scheduled four other
concerts in its fall season.
September 9: Stephen Taylor and Beth Wood
October 14: Michael McNevin and Robin Greenstein
November 11: Still On The Hill
December 9: To Be Announced
Doors open at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 26, at the Live Oak Unitarian
Universalist Church, located at 3315 El Salido Parkway, Cedar Park. For
