JANUARY 2007 (Austin, Texas) – The Live Oak Coffeehouse next month
hosts Karen Mal and Ken Gaines in a benefit performance for Helping
Hand Home for Children. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday,
February 9, at the Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church in Northwest
Austin/Cedar Park.
Admission is $10 or a season pass. Student tickets are available at
half-price, $5. Tickets may be purchased online in advance of the
concert, using the secure PayPal service, at
www.liveoakuu.org/coffee/tickets.html.
Three-quarters of the gate goes to the performers, and one-quarter to
the selected charity. Since the coffeehouse is an all-volunteer,
not-for-profit organization, all of the money from admissions paid at
the door and season passes goes to the performers and the charity.
For 110 years, Helping Hand Home for Children has provided a place to
heal for abused, neglected and abandoned children. The Home provides
residential treatment services and therapeutic foster care for
emotionally disturbed children and advocates for greater public
support of early prevention, intervention, and treatment. Helping Hand
Home is a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization located in
Austin, Texas, licensed by the State of Texas and governed by the
membership of the Helping Hand Society. For more information, visit
the organization's Web site at www.helpinghandhome.org.
In three short years, Karen Mal has gone from a virtual unknown on the
Austin acoustic music scene to one of the most sought-after performers
around, both as a solo artist and as a sideman for others on mandolin,
guitar, and harmony vocals. Karen has opened for and/or appeared
onstage with performers such as Tom Paxton, Slaid Cleaves, Tom
Prasada-Rao, Gail Davies, Buddy Mondlock, and Tom Kimmel.
Houston area singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer Ken Gaines
has the goal of writing great songs in just about every genre and
style. You won't be able to put a finger on what he does from sweet
lyrical ballads, to double entendre blues, to swingin' jazz, and
redneck rock. "For all of the great songs that have been written I
belong to a wonderful group of people who believe there are at least
as many great ones still to be written," Gaines says. His voice has
the range to cover all of these styles and his supple guitar work lays
down arrangements instead of just chords. His lyrics are both powerful
and poetic and highlight his skills as a storyteller and observer of life.

Doors open at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 9, at the Live Oak Unitarian
Universalist Church, located at 3315 El Salido Parkway, Cedar Park.
