AUGUST 2001 (Austin, Texas) - Laid off? Money tight? Then, it's time to
discover the best entertainment value in Austin - and support a good cause as
well.
Bill Ward of Houston is the featured performer as the Live Oak Coffeehouse
Concert Series opens its Fall 2001 season this month. Alan White of Kansas
City will be the opening act. One-quarter of the paid admissions will go to
Habitat for Humanity, the organization that helps poor people around the
world build their own substantial housing. The concert will be held on
Friday, August 24, at 7:30 p.m. at the Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church
in Northwest Austin.
Admission is $8 at the door. Gourmet coffee and pastries will be served, and
are included in the price of admission.
As always, the concert will be smoke-free and alcohol-free, putting the
emphasis on the music and the musicians. Three-quarters of the gate goes to
the performers, and one-quarter to the selected charity. Since the
coffeehouse is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, all of the money
from admissions paid at the door and season passes goes to the performers and
the charity.
Habitat for Humanity International is celebrating its 25th anniversary this
year. Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity has built more than 100,000 houses in
60-plus countries, including 30,000 houses across the United States. Former
President Jimmy Carter is perhaps the most famous volunteer for the
organization. Earlier this month, President George W. Bush helped in building
a new house in Waco. For information on Austin Habitat for Humanity, call
472-8788. The Central Texas area is also home to Habitat for Humanity of
Greater Georgetown and Highland Lakes Habitat for Humanity in Marble Falls.
See the www.habitat.org Web site for more details.
Bill Ward is a veteran singer-songwriter, having released his first album in
1985. A past winner of the prestigious New Folk competition at the Kerrville
Folk Festival, he will also perform Saturday, September 1 on the main stage
at the annual Kerrville Wine & Music Festival. His many awards also include
winning the overall songwriting competition at the South Florida Folk
Festival in 2000. His fourth and most recent album is "One Last Winter."
Singer-songwriter/guitarist Alan White is no stranger to the acoustic music
scene. His music defies categorization. Just when you think you're listening
to a folky love balladeer, he'll hit you with a jazzy tune about the darker
side of street life. As soon as you're settled into that, he comes out with a
hard rocker. His forceful, percussive guitar style perfectly complements his
powerful singing voice.
Here are the dates and performers for the remainder of the Fall 2001 season.
SEPTEMBER 14 - Tim Henderson and Friends (Austin). Opening is Trey Bone
(Austin).
OCTOBER 12 - Ken Gaines and Wayne Wilkerson (Houston). Opening are Joe and
Tree Brunelle (Austin).
NOVEMBER 9 - Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen (Bennington, VT).
