JANUARY 2002 (Austin, Texas) - The Live Oak Coffeehouse Concert Series kicks
off its fifth year with a live performance by Donna and Kelly, formerly of
Still On The Hill, in a benefit for the Austin Children's Shelter. Frank
Meyer opens the show. The performance is on Friday, January 11, at 7:30 p.m.
at the Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church in Northwest Austin.
Admission is $10 at the door. Gourmet coffee and pastries will be served, and
are included in the price of admission.
As always, the concert will be smoke-free and alcohol-free, putting the
emphasis on the music and the musicians. Three-quarters of the gate goes to
the performers, and one-quarter to the selected charity. Since the
coffeehouse is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, all of the money
from admissions paid at the door and season passes goes to the performers and
the charity.
In addition, Donna and Kelly will perform on KUT-FM's "Eklektikos" program at
11 a.m. Friday, January 11. Also on the broadcast will be Austin Keller of
the Live Oak Coffeehouse. KUT is found at 90.5 on the local FM dial and on
the Web at www.kut.org.
The mission of the Austin Children's Shelter is to provide emergency shelter,
high-quality care and hope for the future to the abandoned, abused and
neglected children of our community. When children are removed from their
homes due to life-threatening abuse or neglect, a temporary home must be
found for them until more permanent plans are made. The Austin Children's
Shelter is a safe haven for children in crisis, and it is the only shelter in
Travis County for children from birth to 17 years of age. It is the goal of
the shelter to reduce the emotional trauma suffered by child victims of
abuse, violence and neglect, in a safe and loving place. Each year, ACS
provides care to approximately 300 children. For more details, see the
organization's Web site at www.austinchildrenshelter.org.
Donna Henschell is a singer/songwriter. Her roots are in hard-core country,
and from that background her fiddle playing reeks of honky tonk and swing.
She pours out her heartfelt lyrics and floods the stage with an infectious
energy
that literally won't stand still. Kelly Mulhollan has the ability to play any
instrument he lays his hands on: guitar, banjo, mandolin and harmonica. He is
now creating music on these acoustic instruments using both modern and
indigenous poetry. His compositions lift the poem from the page and give it
wings to soar! Donna and Kelly were both in Still On The Hill, a "folkgrass"
group that was a perennial favorite at the Kerrville Folk Festival and other
festivals around the United States.
Doors open at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 11, at the Live Oak Unitarian
Universalist Church, located at 12310 Ranch Road 620 North. For driving
directions, visit the church's Web site at www.liveoakuu.org or call 219-9008.
