AUGUST 2002 (Austin, Texas) - Three Austin-based singer-songwriters - Karen
Mal, Bill Passalacqua and Jeff Talmadge - will play in a benefit for Austin's
Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve. The performance is on Friday, August 16, at
7:30 p.m. at the Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church in Northwest Austin.

Admission is $10 at the door. Gourmet coffee and pastries will be served, and
are included in the price of admission. Season passes are on sale at $40 for
five shows, or $8 per show. For more information on season passes, call
656-7226.

As always, the concert will be smoke-free and alcohol-free, putting the
emphasis on the music and the musicians. Three-quarters of the gate goes to
the performers, and one-quarter to the selected charity. Since the
coffeehouse is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, all of the money
from admissions paid at the door and season passes goes to the performers and
the charity.

Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve was founded in 1974 to protect 227 acres of
pristine Texas Hill Country and to provide nature education programs.
Visitors enjoy 2-1/2 miles of hiking trails that pass through woodland,
grassland and streamside habitats. These habitats are home to threatened and
endangered species, and hundreds of native plants, animals and birds. Wild
Basin's nature education programs are funded by special events, memberships,
corporate donations and grants. For more information, see www.wildbasin.org.

For the second year in a row, Karen Mal this year was a finalist in the New
Folk Competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival. In three short years, Karen
has gone from a virtual unknown on the Austin acoustic music scene to one of
the most sought-after performers around, both as a solo artist and as a
sideman for others on mandolin, guitar and harmony vocals. Karen has opened
for and/or appeared onstage with performers such as Tom Paxton, Slaid
Cleaves, Tom Prasada-Rao, Gail Davies, Buddy Mondlock and Tom Kimmel.

Bill Passalacqua writes with a sense of humor and a sense of social awareness
wrapped into a pointed and intelligent package. Combining the heart of blues
and the drive of bluegrass, Bill finds his own voice and delivers it with
passion and meaning. After finishing law school, Bill spurned the suit and
tie and moved to Austin to pursue a career in music. While he still gets his
mail in Austin, you might as easily find him in a coffeehouse in Louisville,
a bar in St. Thomas or a ski lodge in Colorado.

Associate baseball scout for a major-league baseball team, Capitol Hill spin
doctor, award-winning poet, practicing lawyer...Jeff Talmadge is a man of
multiple talents and many hats. But perhaps his greatest talent is as a
singularly gifted singer and songwriter - an insightful musical poet whose
work has received extensive airplay throughout the U.S. and Europe, glowing
reviews in numerous music publications, and a large and loyal fan base.

Doors open at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 16, at the Live Oak Unitarian
Universalist Church, located at 12310 Ranch Road 620 North. For driving
directions, visit the church's Web site at www.liveoakuu.org or call 219-9008.

Performers, dates and charities for the remainder of the Fall 2002 season are
as follows:

accepted.
