OCTOBER 2002 (Austin, Texas) - Darryl Purpose, performing with Beth Galiger,
performs this month at the Live Oak Coffeehouse in a benefit for La Leche
League. Doug Clark Steiger of Austin will open. The performance is on Friday,
October 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Church in
Northwest Austin.
Admission is $10 at the door. Gourmet coffee and pastries will be served, and
are included in the price of admission. Season passes are on sale at $24 for
three shows, or $8 per show. For more information on season passes, call
331-8956.
As always, the concert will be smoke-free and alcohol-free, putting the
emphasis on the music and the musicians. Three-quarters of the gate goes to
the performers, and one-quarter to the selected charity. Since the
coffeehouse is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, all of the money
from admissions paid at the door and season passes goes to the performers and
the charity.
La Leche League is an international, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization
dedicated to providing education, information, support and encouragement to
women who want to breastfeed. Each of our groups meets monthly. All
breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women interested in breastfeeding are
welcome to come to our free meetings or call our leaders for breastfeeding
help. Call 272-0842 or visit the local Web site at

Darryl Purpose has led a dark and interesting life. Lured as a teenager by
the glamour of the world of gambling, Darryl Purpose learned how to do it
well and was once was known as the best blackjack player in the world. But he
found himself empty in his success in this sometimes shabby and shadowed
world, and he pursued other directions. In the mid-1980s, he joined The Great
Peace March, a group of activists who marched across the country in protest
against nuclear weapons. Since 1996, Darryl has pursued a career as a
full-time songwriter and performer. "Purpose has finally realized his calling
as a dramatist for the dispossessed, a chronicler of those Americans who, by
choice or by chance, live on the heart's back streets, rising up through the
crooked lines like leaves," writes Michael Tisserand in the liner notes from
his newest album, "A Crooked Line." With his distinctive baritone voice, a
smoothly proficient finger-style guitar technique which has earned him an
endorsement with Taylor Guitars and a sense of drama and storytelling in his
lyrics and music, Purpose delivers a charismatic performance that captures
coffeehouse and theater audiences alike, including a huge supply of
interesting stories from his activities as a peace activist, professional
gambler and modern troubadour.
Doug Clark Steiger is unique and difficult to categorize. Doug's songs are
very musical and emotional. On top of that, his finger-style guitar work
makes his compositions come alive. His words are often integrated into the
music, rather than a poem or story with a music background. Most of his songs
defy any traditional formula. Doug spent five years in Toronto, Canada, from
1970 to 1975, writing, recording and performing. He recorded several singles
for the CBC, Arpeggio Records and Nimbus Nine Productions. Jim Post, Bob
Gibson and Hamilton Camp recorded Doug's song "Light Up My Lady" in 1973.
Doug's CD "Let's Be Friends" is loaded with 17 originals and one great song
by Canadian Rolf Kempf. Doug has played the main stage at Kerrville in 1988
and again in 1993.
Doors open at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 11, at the Live Oak Unitarian
Universalist Church, located at 12310 Ranch Road 620 North. For driving
