Subject: wideband radio need for Cage pieces
tpmjg
Send Email Send Email

Happy new year everyone-
I am looking for advice and/or benevolent acts to aid a performance of
Cage's Radio Music in Los Angeles on January 17. Our efforts at interpreting
the score place the frequency range between 1900khz-5400khz (the tuning
numbers in the score range from 55 to 156 -- we assume these are
wavelengths, as the score is from 1956 -- please advise if we are wrong) and
we need up to 8 radios for the performance. Thanks to any who can help.
We will be performing this at ASTO Gallery in Los Angeles on January 17 at 8
p.m. Other pieces on the program are Steve Reich's Pendulum Music and an
improvisation with cello and laptop. On January 30, we will perform Cage's
Solo for Cello and a cello/laptop improvisation. ASTO is in the Artist's
District between Cafe Metropol and R23. More information can be found on
their web site, www.artst.org.

"one hour as sixty million years"

Dronecore artist Jonathan Coleclough presents an hour-long segment of a
piece based on data about global sea level changes over the past 248
million years. The piece was made by Coleclough as one element of a
collaborative project with Michael Northam, and includes sounds based on
recordings of Michael's, as well as sounds supplied by Colin Potter.

This piece features the haunting acapella vocal of Second Lieut. Laurie

serving with the Occupation Forces. He sings a trad. Japanese folk song
'Love Song to a Red Apple', which is appropriated a second time by Bruce

2 one hour drives were recorded in real time through a lap steel guitar
(through the pick-up) and a banjo (through a contact mic) laying on the
back seat of my car. the drives were then layered on to 8 tracks, with
some laid down backwards. total sound is 42 vibrating strings following
the movement of my car over the freeways, driving from los angeles to
santa barbara and back. some of the tweaky radio frequency sounds were
simply coming from the lap steel pick-up. likewise some of the talking
near the end of the piece is the car radio being picked up from the
contact mic. the two original tracks were laid down without any
processing, the other layers were processed. the piece is very soft for
the first several minutes. [Steve Roden]

quite odd in the world of music compilations. Truly one hell of varied and

recordings, noise, and even some power electronics which seemed weird to
me.... Yet even still the two discs flow together so well that some of the
tracks almost blur together - but in a good way of course. Just think David

Once the first disc was over I couldn\'t wait to hear then next one!! And
well, all I can say is this is an honest & absolute \'must\' for all lovers &

it has been argued that the fact that there is a specific [non-]
visual/movement element for the piece means that it is theatre,
dance, or performance art in some way.

4'33 [1952] is a work composed in three movements, to be "performed
by any instrumentalist(s)" [intro notes in score], with no
description of set and props design, costumes, lighting, movement [or
non-movement], or stage directions for the performer, which makes it
difficult to declare the piece to be dance, theatre or performance
art [even samuel beckett's 35" theatre piece with no actors, breath,
has set and props design]. however, a document with the performance
instructions detailling duration [specific for the entire work,
non-specific for the individual movements] and instrumentation
[variable, open] is available as a _musical score_ through peter's
edition.

the most essential intention of 4'33 clearly lies in the realm of
sound/music, although it is certainly not without interest to
consider the piece in relation to other contexts: dance =
non-movement?; theatre = non-action?; performance art =
non-intention?... appreciation of the "total identity" of any work
of art, no matter what the primary or initial medium, may only be
possible through consideration of the work from various perspectives,
including perspectives with which the viewer/listener [and possibly
the composer as well!] is unfamiliar or even uncomfortable. of
course the idea that one might somehow be able to "understand" the
"total identity" of any work of art is naively utopic at best,
ignorantly reductionist at worst.

many claims about the place of 4'33 in theatre, performance art or
dance have been made [primarily (exclusively!?) by musicians]; i
would be interested in hearing from these people exactly how they
feel the work relates to the traditions and history of these other
mediums.

-

a small group of performers constructs a sculpture of various
materials chosen for their individual sonic characteristics or
potential. 150-175 individual actions are composed according to the
specific sounds they will create, or the effect that the articulation
of a particular action might have on the sonic texture at any given
moment. the sculpture is destroyed live by the performers
articulating these actions in aleatoric succession.

is the resulting de-formance to be considered [dada?] sculpture,
theatre, environmental art, social commentary on the disposible
nature of much art today, or philosophising on the fragile and
ephemeral nature of art, regardless of the fact that the composer
actually composed it as chamber music [a sound composition involving
3-5 intimately-interacting performers]?

the identity of such pieces as 4'33 and the sculpture de-formance may
occupy a larger field than the medium for which it was initially
conceived, but may be more effective or more readily realisable in
one or another medium. as i previously mentioned, 4'33 would not be
terribly innovative or provocative in the realm of performance art.

cheers,
jef

Well, Cage's "Theatre Piece" is also available, similarly cataloged and
packaged, so saying that being supplied in that form makes it strictly a
"_musical score_", suggesting that it is thereby somehow not part of
other arts, seems a bit hard to uphold.

Note, by the way, that, as documented at
http://music.research.home.att.net/4min33se.htm , several different
scores exist for the piece, with different degrees of specificity. And
then there's 0'00" (4'33" #2) which does explicitly specify that an
action is to be made, clearly in a series with the first piece.

Does the absence of, say, any explicit indication of volume in 4'33"
make it somehow not a music score in the way that the absence of any
explicit indication of sets and the like are claimed somehow to make it
not a theatre score?

It might seem so if composed now. But fifty years ago, as shown by the
reactions to its earlier performances, it was indeed seen by some as
quite the provocation.

4'33" is a musical meditation on the emptiness in/of music. what is the
nature of music in the world?

cage continued to illuminate these ideas in later works, using different
methods -- more "musical" methods. the "number pieces" near the end of
his life are very similar to 4'33" in this regard. there is even a
silent "number piece" which makes the link clear.

and ...

One8/108 (for solo cello/orchestra) is 40'33" long. 108 is an important
number in buddhism.

is this clear?

ZHELEZOBETON MUSIC MAILORDER

Zhelezobeton is the new Russian label focusing attention on
experimental electronic, acoustic and noise music. The main
objective is to unveil the potential of Russia as a source of
high-grade and unconventional music, that's why we are ready to
cooperate with all interested parties: musicians, zines, labels,
distributors etc. We also have peculiar point of view to our
products appearance. We accept neither non-professional
"self-releases" nor bulk-editions packed in standard jewel-cases.
Our design concept is inseparably linked with the music, and limited
editions should underscore its peculiar status. Look around
yourselves and you'll see great amount of music and its obvious
excess. Constantly growing sound flow makes music to be just useless
air vibrations. We can't turn these processes back but we can remind
you what really is music for a hundred couples of ears.

code: ZHB-I
category: gabber/rhythm'n'noise
title: Cloning Experiment Failure [Thousand Noises]
form-factor: CDR
date: 2002

C.E.F. was created in 1999 in Pskov, Russia. Their first records
combined cliche of metal and breakbeat styles in absolutely perverted
and impetuous version. Evolution of the band processed to the way of
noise domination, and concentration of sounds per unit time was
dramatically increasing with every new recording. Characteristic
features of band's style are emotional screaming vocal and fragmented
composition structure. We can notice some resemblance with Delphium,
Atari Teenage Riot and even with some early Ant-Zen releases.
"Thousand Noises" - their last recording by nowadays - represents the
distillation of band's energy. Very rhythmical, with cracklings of
overloaded apparatus, feedbacks and sampled guitars, it splashes out
all the hidden fury of Pskov's duet. Undoubtedly, not everyone is
interested in such kind of music. CDR is released as limited edition
of 115 hand-numbered copies in cardboard sleeve with technological
film incut (every frame with scheme, table or diagram is unique). The
album is completed with two bonus-tracks of remixed songs from the
first two demos.

Release price without postal charges is $4.
Postal charges: Europe $2, other $4.

code: ZHB-II
category: static radionoise
title: DN23rd [Signals from Outside]
form-factor: CDR (lim.23)
date: 2002

DN23rd is a project coming from Moscow, Russia, which recordings can
be called absolutely unmusical, because they are made of pure (not
processed with anything) radionoise. The creative work consists in
selection of necessary interference frequency. This is the first
album and it presents a very uncommon frequency which combines usual
laminated radionoise and signals of unknown origin. This disc fits
perfectly for submergence into trance or practice of outer-body
experiences. Only a few may be carried away by such kind of "music",
that's why this edition is extra-limited to 23 copies. The CDR is
packed in painted slim box with burned titles and a real tablet with
codes of memory blocks from Soviet computing device.

Release price without postal charges is $4.
Postal charges: Europe $2, other $4.

To be released soon:

code: ZHB-III
category: drone dark ambient
title: Necropolis [Necrosphere]
form-factor: CDR

True. I'll see what I can do, if I get the permission of the
participants here.

Hmm! Not sure. I suspect that it may have, but I'll have to search.

Actually, this piece, though "silent" in the 4'33" sense, would be quite
loud in performance, since any slight non-intentional would be massively
amplified.

I have a map I can sell you to the UFO landing site where they are
giving away free perpetual motion machines as instructed by the
reincarnated soul of Albert Einstein and Trigger (the Horse).

There is a virtual energy of a vacuum, and certain subatomic
reactions can only be explained if they tap into this energy.
However, the energy loan must be repaid, and repaid within the limits
of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principal, i.e. within a fraction of a
microsecond. Just as you can't get blood out of a turnip, you can't
use the virtual energy field as a power source. The type of writing
on the webpage above is science fiction at best, a scam for the
guilable and uneducated at worst.

Working tracks of length 1:08 into my current CD, it's most appropriate
given the material I'm working with... :)

I've heard varying lay accounts of the origins of the significance, but
puzzled out this one myself which I am quite sure is no accident:

  1^1 * 2^2 * 3^3 = 108

ie 1 to the first (itself) times 2 squared (4) times 3 cubed (27).

:)

PS my vague numerlogical superstitiousness is such that when I saw that if
I bought a copy of the Number Stations CD set at Aquarius records here in
SF, it would be copy number 108 that they had sold (they had a chart on
the wall... :) )... I just had to do it!

it may or maynot be fiction, either way many of the most amazing creations in science would be considered fiction before they were brought into public access.

Subject: TRENTE OISEAUX NEWSLETTER / CATALOG I/2003
bguenter@...

Dear Friends,

this year's first newsletter and catalog are coming to you quite
early on because during January the Trente Oiseaux headquarters will be reno-
vated, including floor, wallpaper, and the layout of furniture and similar
things in the space. For this reason Trente Oiseaux will be closed from today
until the end of the month.

The more important news is the release of Steve Roden's new CD on Trente
Oiseaux:
Resonant Cities, TOC031. Steve composed Resonant Cities as a project for Kunst
Radio Wien (Art Radio Vienna) using only field recordings of tiny details from
cities all over the world. The following lines from a text Steve wrote about
this work perfectly describe what it is about:

“... searching through my library of field recordings for material for this
project, i realized that my visits to most cities are a kind of hunting activity
to gather these inconsiderable audio things - and indeed as i listened, a lot of
these sounds they conjured up some very strong memories of moments when i have
been in a city yet felt outside of 'city', as though an intimate listening or
soundmaking activity can completely take one outside of their immediate envi-
ronment to a place where the sound one is listening to begins to define the
parameters of space. even quiet sounds, if one listens closely and intimately
can direct one's attention away from the existing 'scenery'...”

The full text of Steve's essay regarding Resonant Cities is included on the CD.
TOC031 is scheduled for early February 2003. I will send out another info mail
when the CD will have arrived and be ready for shipping.

In early April Trente Oiseaux will release a second CD by Japanese Duo Kuwayama-
Kijima, this time without cars, but recorded in a warehouse at Nagoya Port, and
featuring the sound of crickets and waves picked up by microphones and trans-
mitted into the building. Titled '02.08.31', TOC032 is a very immersive
recording
of musical and sonic explorations the listener is invited to follow closely to
create a very gratifying listening experience.

I'm planning to release a new work on Trente Oiseaux in early June 2003, with
the little hiccup being that i have not even started composing it, as i have
been way too busy doing tax declarations and moving furniture, CDs, and a lot
of other objects around. I have, however, been thinking/imagining quite a bit
of what i need to work on, and am confident that, once the manual labor part
done, i'll get into gear to do some musical work quickly. Wish me luck! :-)

With all my best to all of you,

                               bernhard
