Wow, so I'd have to get a new motherboard just to use this on my
computer? There's no way around this at all? Seems like an
incredibly shoddy design. I guess I could try getting a crappy old
laptop, just to use this thing.

Do you have a multimeter? If you can eliminate the cable, the computer, etc. then check out the transferer.. power instability will cause 452 errors.. so check...

If you get a parallel PCI card, you will never be able to use it with the transferer. Unless you use win98. Or win ME.. winxp will not allow you to assign it...
