I am not sure... To me, it seems to have reasonable tempo when using VBA 1.7.2 on Windows. VBA on OS X seems to be all off somehow... And I haven't tested it...
Another point of advice. Try with power save ON (Not off or auto) and VSync enabled. That should probably make it run better. At least it does with Lameboy DS....
