My guess is that something is wrong with the MIDI cable. Are you using
the right opto-coupler? Is your cable abnormally long?
The MIDi sync message is the simplest one as it really only consists
of a continuous pulse. So if some thing is corrupting the MIDI signal,
it might let sync through without problem, but mess with other signals
(Note on/off etc)
