Hey all; the other day people were asking for M5 audio samples, so I
thought I'd mention an opportunity for the Boston-area folks to see
one in the flesh this weekend.

I'm using an M5N in a stage production of War of the Worlds. It's a
full-on '30s style radio drama done live on stage, Prairie Home
Companion style, at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square. Two more
shows at 2pm and 8pm today.

In addition to the M5N I'm using a MuRF, a PAiA theremin, misc. pedals
and some custom Midibox-based controllers, with a Nord G2 for routing.

There isn't a great deal of synth work, but most of the other sound
effects are extremely analog: banging steel, dropping concrete
blocks, breaking glass, throwing sandbags, etc.

If you come, hang around the balcony afterwards and say hi. For
everyone else, I'll share recordings once I get them.

Hello fellow Macbeth users.

I have two issues I'd like to address:

Issue #1:

As has been mentioned previously, Ken is pretty terrible at replying to emails
(that said, he did managed to arrange the sale, payment and shipment of my M5
entirely by electronic correspondence), so I need to turn to the list for
advice/help and potentially to get Ken's attention.

I hate my M5. Okay, I don't really hate it, but I do hate the mixer-style slider
caps. I was excited when the M5N came out a couple of years ago with new
'synth-style' slider caps. Ken even bragged about how he listened to his users
when he revised the design.

Great, but my M5 sits mostly unused because of the slider caps. I'm sure most of
you think that's a silly reason not to use a synth, but I'm finicky like that
and, based on the redesign, I'm obviously not the only one who thought that
those slider caps were a problem.

So, Ken, if you're listening, please please please please (I've sent you
probably 3 or 4 emails about this already over the last 2 years) let me know if
you can either provide me with a new set of slider caps or assist me in sourcing
the same or similar ones used on the M5N.

As for the rest of you, if any of you M5 users have swapped slider caps I'd love
to know where you got them from.

Issue #2

What do you M5/M5N users in places far away from Scotland plan to do when your
Macbeth synth eventually goes wonky? I currently have an issue with a slider
that I'm hoping is just dust that will work itself out. In the event that my M5
actually does need service, is this the kind of thing that a local synth tech
could take care of? Am I the only one laying awake at night wondering how to get
my $4000 Scottish synth fixed in the future?

Thanks in advance for any help guys.

I didn’t like the mixer type fader caps OR the newer synth styles ones (too skinny for me) so I bought a bunch of vintage fader caps from old Numark graphic equalizers. Took me a while to get the full complement but well worth it I’d say. There’s a ton of different caps out there that will work, available from all kinds of on-line electronics stores. Have some fun with it !

Just about any competent synth tech would be able to deal with your Macbeth and Ken is willing to even give up tiny parts of the schematic if absolutely needed, but is very unlikely to make his secrets known to the world in their entirety. I wouldn’t let the thought of having to ship that behemoth back to the lowlands of Scotland keep you awake any longer.

Yves,

Thanks for posting that - I managed to break two slider caps on my M5 this week, so was looking for a replacement set too.

Anyone seen these (or similar) in different colours to black?

I was hoping orange with a black/White marking!?

Whilst were on the topic of knobs - has anyone seen a source of knobs like the new dual oscillators (the chrome endless) Got to play with one yesterday (thanks Richard) and I'm now fantasizing ;)

Cheers

Hi James

On my site I put a page web some years ago dedicated to modular synth
knobs :
http://yusynth.net/technique/knobs.html

You'll find some hints there.

Some updated infos concerning the knobs à la MODCANB/MACBETH/ARIES :

Hi-
I have an original M5 and seem to be getting a nasty "hum" from it. It
happens anytime I patch the output of the M5 to my digi003. It even happens if
the M5 power is off but still parched to the system. The only thing that stops
it is unplugging the M5. Anyone else have any noise issue with theirs? Is this
normal? Any help would be much appreciated.

sounds like a problem with your cables or your power supply rather than the M5. try different cables ?

Yeah, I tried different cables, different outlets, etc. I hope it's not the
power supply inside the M5- I really don't want to have to open it up.

I've uploaded a .zip file("ndo.zip") in the Files>Sounds section of a ".html +
.swf"(Flash movie file) demo of the new X-Series Dual Oscillator. Download and
unzip it and load the "ndo.html" into your browser.

In this demo I tried to show the 'presence' that these oscillators put out, plus
the integration of the internal cross modulation/external fm-modulation plus the
fantastic ring-mod circuit without coloring the audio with a filter or efx.Part
of the beauty of this module(due to its integration) is the sum is more than its
parts. I used the doepfer 132-3 since it is a very transparent(non-distorting)
vca and the great cv-shaping of the Livewire Dual Bissell Generator modules.

I chose putting the sequences/loops into a flash file because of the 160 kbit
encoding of the audio to capture as much of the quality of the sound(you should
hear the quality at 96khz/24bit!). mp3 is a nice encoding algorithm but is
'lossy' and subtlety of the sound breaks down rather quickly. Also imo,one long
noodle would have dissipated the power of the demo(plus increase the file
size!).Finally putting one oscillator left/one right/ring-mod center ties
everything together.

hello,

i own a M3X and just bought a virus polar.
i work with ableton as a sequecer.

I was wondering how you macbeth owners would hook up this equipement.

i mean, i want to use the m3x in optimal conditions, but untill know i only used it to create melodies with straight forward notes and such
(the bass-kind) but for some reason i find the m3x not very handy concerning modulating the sound of it.
for example how can i control the pulsewidth modulation from ableton to the synth.
with the polar it seems like peanuts, i immediately have wicked modulated sound & textures, with the macbeth, i get only some tunes.
i recently used a doepfer basic module and also there i immediately had wicked sounds...

can someone give me some tips on how to hook them up, or maybe how i have to use the m3x so that its not a constant search with dry tones, but a joy to explore the sounds.
i own it for a few years, i'm not planning to sell of course, but i just experience much ease when i use other synths (also modular analogues) compared to the m3x, and i'm afraid if i don't catch up with this, i'm gonna end up with a dusty unused macbeth...and i don't like that tought.

am i missing some kind of controller to freak with the m3x here?

cheers,

hi Jan,

The only modulation you can control via MIDI on the M3X will be the digital LFO and the AUX modulation signal built in to the Kenton MIDI to CV converter. I no longer own an M3X so I can’t help you with the details.

As far as modulating the oscillators on the actual synth this is done using the Routing switches to the right of the Frequency knobs on the Oscillator panel and the Volume / Mod knobs in the middle of the Mixer panel.

Don’t worry, you will definitely be able to get some crazy modulated sounds out of this synth !

cheers

Tim

hi tim,

thanx for your reply,
yeah i know how i have to route...
for example using osc 1 as soundsource, using osc 2 to modulate the first osc...
but alltough i know how to do it, i just can't seem to find how to use the m3x like other synths i have,
for example a juno106 (ok, you can't compare the sound) is extemely easy and clear concerning building a sound and adding modulation to it, with immediate dramatic result.
i have the feeling with the m3x that i have to 'work' in order to find an interesting sound, and with like the juno or a virus, i can 'play' and create an interesting sound.
and i of course prefer playing music then working (in the dull sence) with music.

don't get me wrong, i'm willing to think and make efforts, i'm a manual eater and such...
but its my experience with the M3x compared to other synths.

also i never can create a nice warm, fluffy, wide interesting sounds with it... i always end up with raw and cold...but maybe thats typical macbeth?
do you happen to still have some patchsheets of the m3x?

thanx again tim.
cheers,
jan

i own it for a few years, i'm not planning to sell of course, but i just experience much ease when i use other synths (also modular analogues) compared to the m3x, and i'm afraid if i don't catch up with this, i'm gonna end up with a dusty unused macbeth...and i don't like that tought.

am i missing some kind of controller to freak with the m3x here?

cheers,
jan

So, my M5 has developed a problem with one of the LFO mod sliders for VCO2.
This is probably a physcical (ie. slider hardware, loose solder point)problem
rather than a failed electronic component.

I'm in Toronto, Canada so shipping it back to Ken would be an absolute last
resort. Anyone had any issues with their M5s dealt with in North America?

Have you tried the Analog Heaven list ? http://machines.hyperreal.org/Analogue-Heaven/

I know there are several members from Toronto on there who may be able to help you find a good synth tech. If it’s just a bad pot I really don’t think it’ll be hard to get it fixed. Have you tried deoxit or a similar fader cleaner ? Maybe that’s all it needs.

Hi,

how can sample&hold effect be obtained with the M3X?
i own this synth for few years and I still think i can't get the max out of it, due to my lack of knowledge.
(yes i do read the manual)
is there some handy midicontroller so i don't have to use the build in kenton?
i find it not very handy, or at least not comfortable to use, for exampl for portamento stuff etc...

thank you!

jan

Hi,
I've recently experienced that the main fuse blows in my M5. I
replaced it with another 1A (T) fuse (even though the label says
500mA), but just blew instantly.

So, I assume something is wrong. What could it be? Any ideas?

Thanks

/henrik

If I remember correctly, the word is that Ken is easier to reach by telephone
but I can't seem to find the number on his website anymore.

My M5 has a problem and my technician will need to get in touch with him for
technical info to do the repair.

As usual, attempts to reach him by email haven't worked...

Can anyone here dig up his phone number from previous correspondence?
