Thank you, Mary! We appreciate all of our fans, especially long-time loyal ones like you.
1958 was long before I joined, but it's one of those 'legendary' AL Nationals that the old timers often talked about when I joined. It was Hawthorne's first Nationals win in four years, and was the start of their incredible run of national championships from 1958 through 1964. They were finally stopped by a great Rochester Crusaders corps in 1965, but we won again in 1966, my first year in the corps.
The competing corps is still going strong, placing 5th at the recent DCA Championships, which they have won nine times. I was lucky enough to be part of two DCA titles, in 1970 and 1973.

LOL.. Thanks for thinking of me John... No apology necessary. Your contributions
to the Caballeros over the years is one of the reasons they (and you) have won
so many titles. Having marched with BAC I was "supposed" to go over to the
Skyliners but ended up with the Sunrisers...LOL (Having been a (small) part in 5
of their 7 DCA titles, I'm honored to have marched with Sun)

We were a little drum corp from Portland, Maine around
1959 when the Nationals were in Chicago.
Our color guard came in 8th – we were thrilled. We all went
to Soldier Field to see the finals and that was my introduction to Hawthorne
Caballeros – it was mind boggling. I think it was your Junior Corps

Yes, I'll be there again this year performing with the Caballeros Alumni Corps. We have been in the show every year it's been held, since 1996. I play in the snare line and I am the lead percussion instructor/coordina tor.

Dick, The 'Mezzanine' is actually the first level, when you enter through the front doors. There are maybe a dozen or so steps outside, and then a straight walk through the lobby and into the back of the mezzanine area. I recall some folks on the floor in folding chairs, but I think they are local VIP's.

Dick,
So glad you are going this year – you will love it!!! The Patriotic concert is Friday night and is free, but you have to have tickets. The parade is Saturday morning and the Drum Corp “standstill” is Saturday night and there is a fee. If I remember correctly, the seating is on the Mezzanine and Balcony, no seats on the floor. I don’t remember if there is an elevator.
If you go to Google – Thanksgiving Plymouth Homecoming, you should be able to get all the info you need and the seating plan for the concerts. I think the Group who sell the tickets volunteer part time, so you have to catch them when they are in, but you can leave a voicemail and have them call you back. Good luck……Mary

Hi all. Can anyone help me out? I have motel reservations in Plymouth for my first trip to the Thanksgiving festivities there. While I was early getting those, I didnt realize how difficult tickets for the Reunion concert would be. As I look at the Memorial Hall website, it looks as if no seating is available at ground level and I have yet to order tickets. Far as I can tell, just messanine and balcony seats left. My problem is I walk with a cane and have limited distance ability. Can anyone tell me what to expect as far as accessing those areas and what would be my best shot at tickets. They say call, but all attempts to get a phone number through directory assistance fails. Also, does anyone know how, or if handicap parking is available near the facility? And finally, does anyone know where the patriotic concert on Friday night is held, and what the situation is there? Anyone
insight would be appreciated. Thanks >>>> Dick

David, thank you for your invitation. I have been holding off replying due to a pending family commitment on that day, which now has been firmed, thus I can not make it. I was hopeing I could as this is great that the Muchachos survived all the comings and goings of the years that saw I lose so many great corps. I hope one day soon to get to see you guys again, and meet you in person. Saw the corps at the SPartans show a few years ago, but was not able to get there last year either. So, my best wishes to you and the whole Muchachos gang. Have a great day that day and may you all have many more great years.

Hi All,
Just wanted to let you all know that the Muchachos are holding our 1st open house on 9/20 at the Franco American centre in Manchester, NH.
We are preparing to celebrate our 50th anniversary.
DCA I&E is just a week away. I have entered in the soprano contest with a
Ludwig single valve/slip slide horn and will play the "Stardust" solo. A little
walk down memory lane if you will. I have been planning this for a while and
thought that some of you might be interested. Here is an e-mail I received from
Carol Hooton about the history of that tune:
"I asked Bob Adair for his input on this question. Following is his reply:
"Hey Hoot: Ah yes , the saga of Stardust. A long time ago, Bob Adair fell in
love with the ballad, Stardust. When he became instructor of the Reilly Raiders
in 1957. he decided to arrange Stardust as a tune that the corps could use as a
dance step type number, sorta///kinda like a gliding, smooth, sidestep movement
across the field, along the lines of the type of maneuvering Reilly did in those
days. It was written for some solo work, and who better than Gene Bunting, the
young kid from Liberty Bell who was an excellent soloist for Adair in the years
up to the Bell's folding due to lack of drummers.
Bill Hooton said he loved the idea, but felt Reilly needed a concert, and "let's
use it that way, it should offer a good bit of dynamics, and should be
effective." Adair, 22 years of age at that time, and not one to challenge
authority, felt if Hoot wants it that way,. no question,.....let's do it!
Bunting played it extremely well up until the Albany concert , when something
prevented him from making the show. Now what! I arranged it , but never thought
I'd have to play it! The field at the Albany show for some reason was laid out
quite a distance from the stands, I remember a hot night with loads of bugs
flying around. I just wanted to get through it without screwing up and losing
the show for the corps. Fred Rohlfing told me recently that quite a few guys
lined up to shake my hand after the show, I don't remember that, I never liked
to draw attention to myself anyway, just wanted to get through it OK.
Bunting said I played it several times in 58 and 59 due to his work pressures,
as far as I was concerned he was the man to do it. In 1960 we decided to do a
sequel to Stardust, which was Sleepy Lagoon. While I personally favored it, as
is usually the case sequels don't measure up to the original idea. Bunting did
an excellent job all year and while I don't remember anyone other than Gene
playing it,. that was the year that Hoot left and withothers conducting, it was
much less effective. Oh yes, that also was the year that the music instructor
had to pick up the 3S sticks and become the 3rd snare when Biscotti's
replacement Joe Porta of BS was drafted very early in the season..
In answer to your original question, Stardust, full arrangement, was only played
in competition by Bunting and Adair in 58 and 59 .After that, Stardust,
shortened arrangement, was played most effectively by Bunting, Barney
Longhitano, from Bracken and maybe John Leonhardt from BS. The shortened
arrangement was without the intro. The foregoing is to the best of my knowledge
and felt to be very, if not 100%, accurate. BA"
This is a tune that I have tried to play over the years. I have discovered that
it is much easier to play on a two or three valve horn. Playing "Stardust" on
the original single valve horn only makes me appreciate the artistry and ability
of drumcorps in years gone by. See ya'll in Rochester.
