Melissa Etheridge Offers Kylie Minogue Advice
Melissa Etheridge is urging Kylie Minogue to keep a positive outlook
as she battles her recently-diagnosed breast cancer.
Etheridge was diagnosed with the same disease in October but is now
cancer-free, and while Minogue, 36, recovers from her surgery, the
singer has some advice to offer her.
The 43-year-old says, "I always hate to see it happen to such a young
person. I consider myself young. But it seems to be showing up in
younger and younger women, which is devastating."
"I looked at my cancer as a kind of gift, a Drano for the soul. I
cleaned out all the unnecessary toxins, literally and figuratively...
It's all about attitude and nutrition."
Etheridge adopted a diet heavy on fresh fruits and vegetables and
light on acidic and processed foods.
She explains, "I'm now eating foods that are close to the earth, as
organic as possible, with protein that's low in hormones. I learned
to dialogue with my body, to focus on keeping it healthy instead of
having to look a certain way. I've never had more energy."
"Our Western nutritional trends are horrendous. My generation, who
were kids in the 1960s and 1970s, grew up with white bread and
processed lunch meat. We're turning our bodies against ourselves."
"I send my best to Kylie, all love and light to her. It's all a
journey, so fasten your seat belt."

Did anyone here see Melissa at the Grammys Yesterday?? She shaved her
head. All that long gorgeous hair. What was she thinking?? If it is
due to Chemotherapy for her Breast Cancer then I can understand but
if it is to make a fashion statement then she must have lost her
mind. Do not think that I am bashing her or anythin because I would
never do that. I just think it was a bad decision unless it was due
to Chemo.
3. PLANET OUT: MELISSA, YES, SHE IS
by Kathleen DeBold
February 17, 2005
The phone was ringing when I walked into my house. I had barely said
hello
when the voice started screaming.
"Oh my God! Oh my God! Are you watching this?"
"Watching what?"
"The TV! Oh my God, don't you have it on?"
Visions of 9/11 exploded in my head as I scrambled for the
remote. "Hurry
up, hurry up," the voice implored. "Channel 9!" My fumbling fingers
punched
in the number. And there was Melissa Etheridge -- bald, beautiful and
singing the hell out of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart."
Despite my best efforts to butch it out, my eyes filled up as the
rock
icon
shared her vulnerability and strength with all lesbians who, like
her,
are
living with cancer. But these weren't just tears of joy for one
woman's
selfless act. The day before, I had been to a memorial service for yet
another dear friend who had died from cancer. I cried for her and her
partner of 25 years -- and for all those we have lost to this
devastating
disease.
Melissa Etheridge's appearance at the 2005 Grammy Awards was a
revolutionary
moment in lesbian health. In the flash of a paparazzo's camera,
Melissa
and
her partner, Tammy Lynn Michaels, accomplished what lesbian health
activists
have been trying to do for decades: get the mainstream media to say
the
words "lesbian" and "cancer" in the same sentence, and get lesbians
to
focus
on an issue of tremendous importance to their health and well being.
What little research there is shows that lesbians may be at a higher
risk
for certain types of cancer. Lesbians also face serious barriers to
receiving cancer screening and care because of real and perceived
discrimination based on their sexual orientation or gender
expression.
These
barriers include less access to health insurance (lesbians can't get
married, and very few workplaces offer domestic-partnership
benefits),
lack
of lesbian-focused health education programs and
heterosexism/homophobia
among health care providers and their staffs. As a result, lesbians
often
don't get diagnosed until their cancer is more advanced. Melissa
Etheridge
is helping to change all that.
Since the Grammy Awards, my e-mail box has been filled with messages
from
women for whom, as one wrote, "Melissa just opened a huge closet
door"
in
their lives. The comments ranged from deeply poignant ("I just wish
Linda
could have been here to see it with me. She loved Melissa so much") to
fiercely empowered ("I'm not wearing my wig to work today -- bald is
beautiful!") Even more wonderful was the number of calls and e-mail
messages
asking for information about cancer, or asking for referrals to
lesbian-friendly doctors or asking how they could help lesbians with
cancer.
All because Melissa Etheridge had the courage to say, "Yes, I am."
Yes,
she
is a lesbian. And, yes, she is a lesbian with cancer.
What words can describe someone who has impacted lesbian health as
much
as
Melissa has? "Hero"? "Role model"? "Inspiration"? Yes, she is.
Kathleen DeBold is the executive director of the Mautner Project, the
national lesbian health organization.
The Mautner Project improves the health of lesbians and their families
through advocacy, education, research and direct service. We envision
a
health care system that is guided by social justice and responsive to
the
needs of all people.

UCC Office of Communication

Dear Tom,
The Rev. John H. Thomas, general minister and president of the UCC, welcomes
SpongeBob Squarepants to the UCC's national offices in Cleveland. [January 2005]

Take a look at our latest blog entry at AccessibleAirwaves.org. Many other blogs
including the DailyKos.com, FaithForward and AMERICABlog have discussed the
story on their websites and we've received many supportive comments from people
like you. Here's the full story sent straight to you at AccessibleAirwaves.org
You can see photos from SpongeBob's visit to the UCC

Please give your friends and family members a smile and let them know that an
alternative evangelical message of tolerance exists in America. Pass this
message on!
SPECIAL NOTE: Jan 31 -- Monday -- is the last day you can donate to a charitable
organization such as the UCC and still claim your contribution on your 2004 tax
return. We hope you will consider a gift to us of $25, if you can. We need your
support to continue our message of tolerance and diversity -- now more than
ever. Click here to give.
We also need your letters to the FCC to counter Dobson's terrible message of
intolerance. If you want to speak up for SpongeBob: Write today!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joining the animated fray, the United Church of Christ today (Jan. 24) said that
Jesus' message of extravagant welcome extends to all, including SpongeBob
Squarepants - the cartoon character that has come under fire for allegedly
holding hands with his friend Patrick, a starfish.
"Absolutely, the UCC extends an unequivocal welcome to SpongeBob," the Rev. John
H. Thomas, the UCC's general minister and president, said, only partly in jest.
"Jesus didn't turn people away. Neither do we."
For that matter, Thomas explained, the 1.3-million-member church, if given the
opportunity, would warmly receive Barney, Big Bird, Tinky-Winky, Clifford the
Big Red Dog or, for that matter, any who have experienced the Christian message
as a harsh word of judgment rather than Jesus' offering of grace.
The UCC's welcome comes in the wake of laughable accusations by James C. Dobson,
founder of Focus on the Family, that the popular SpongeBob and other well-known
cartoon characters are crossing "a moral line" by stressing tolerance in a
national We Are Family Foundation-sponsored video that will be distributed to
U.S. schools on March 11, 2005.
Later, an assistant to Dobson called SpongeBob's participation in the video
"insidious."
Thomas said, on the contrary, it is Dobson who is crossing the moral line for
sending the mistaken message that Christians do not value tolerance and
diversity as important religious values.
"While Dobson's silly accusation makes headlines, it's also one more concrete
example of how religion is misused over and over to promote intolerance over
inclusion," Thomas said. "This is why we believe it is so important that the UCC
speak the Gospel in an accent not often heard in our culture, because far too
many experience the cross only as judgment, never as embrace."
Dobson, despite his often-outrageous viewpoints, is arguably one of the most
oft-heard religious voices in popular culture today. Through his Focus on the
Family media empire, Dobson produces daily commentaries that appear widely on
television and radio stations across the United States, often times as "public
service announcements."
Meanwhile, the UCC's recently released 30-second paid television commercial -
produced to underscore the denomination's belief that Jesus didn't turn anyone
away - has been rejected by two major television networks for being "too
controversial."
"Resistance to our message is formidable," Thomas says, "because we're cutting
against the prevailing grain of a society that is afraid of the stranger,
suspicious of difference and easily seduced by narrowly defined theological
boundaries."
The 1.3-million-member United Church of Christ, with national offices in
Cleveland, has almost 6,000 local churches in the United States and Puerto Rico.
It was formed by the 1957 union of the Congregational Christian Churches and the
Evangelical and Reformed Church.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
P.S.: Please forward this message to your friends and family. Not only will you
pass on a little humor, you'll also let folks know that a lack of inclusion is
not an issue for some American churches. UCC represents tolerance, diversity and
reason at a time when these values are still needed more than ever. You, your
friends, your family, even SpongeBob and Patrick will always be welcome at the
UCC.
P.P.S.: Please consider making a donation. Just a reminder: January 31 -- Monday
-- is the last day you can donate to a charitable organization such as the UCC
and claim it on your 2004 tax return. Any donation you can make -- no matter the
size -- or letter to the FCC you can write at www.AccessibleAirwaves.org will
help us.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Reverend Bob Chase
