Does anyone have any extra tickets to the Harmony Sweepstakes this
coming Saturday that I can purchase? I called Ticket Master this
morning and was shocked to find that they were sold out after
Birchmere told me there were still plenty left last Friday! In any
case, I'd like at least 2 - have been to the Sweepstakes the last 5
years or so and don't want to miss the fun!

If you do have any extras, please email me ASAP at two addresses -
RRose1818@... and eroseman@..., and call me at the
office at 703-934-3859.

Thanks!

Varsity Vocals is pleased to announce that Amanda Grish has been
hired as Executive Director of the International Championship of
Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA). Amanda was the Midwest Regional
Producer for the ICCA during the 2003 season, and has taken the place
of Jessika Diamond who ran the ICCA for four years. Amanda came to
the ICCA after an award-winning stint with University of Illinois' No
Strings Attached (receiving a "Best Choreography" Judges' Special
Award at the ICCA 2002 MidWest Semi-Finals), serving as choreographer
and business manager. After getting A B.A. from U of I, she returned
for a master's in Journalism.

With her promotion, there is now an opening for a Midwest Regional
Producer. In addition, Jamie Yost, who ably performed the job of
MidAtlantic Regional Producer last year, is going to nursing school.
So there is also an opening for her job. Interested? Please send a
note both to Don Gooding (don@...) and Amanda Grish

Three singers in the DC Metro area are seeking two more to complete
a new semi-pro vocal band. Baritones, tenors, altos, and sopranos
all invited to audition. We are looking for singers with strong solo
voices (especially in rock and r&b styles) and the ability to blend
well with a group. Good pitch and rhythm necessary. Arranging and
writing a plus.

The group will have a modern rock sound, incorporating effects and
using a bass/percussionist-in-one to allow for fuller backgrounds.
We will perform a healthy mix of covers and original material. The
founding members have hundreds of a cappella shows under their
belts, tons of gig contacts in the area, multiple CARA nominations
and RARB recognition, extensive knowledge of ProTools, and the drive
and talent to make a successful group and a rewarding musical
experience.

To find out more information and/or audition, please send a
description of your singing experience and abilities to

To the members of this group:

Hi! I just came across this a couple of days ago and wanted to say
hi. As you can probably tell by my subject, there's another reason
too, but I'll get there in a minute. =)

My names Shawn, and I'm a 2+ year resident of the Harrisburg Area
(Lemoyne, to be precise), with the decade prior having spent in State
College, PA. I've been an a cappellahead since my early 20's, having
either formed or helped to form several groups in the State College
area, most of which were affiliated with Penn State University. I'm
also a former regional producer for the ICCA and have been a CASA
ambassador for over a decade. Since moving, I've sung with the
Keystone Capital Chorus (barbershop) for a period of time before
deciding that I wanted to get back into the "vocal band" thing. I've
recently put together a "post-collegiate" ensemble that currently has
11 members and a very successful first rehearsal, so I'm pretty
jazzed on all things a cappella right now.

In any event, the other reason for my post is that if anyone on here
lives within the Harrisburg Area (Hershey, Carlisle, Cumberland
County, York County, Lancaster, etc...)...we're still looking for 1-3
more basses for sure, and maybe another Tenor 1, to help to fill out
the sound. This is a for fun group that will eventually gig to self-
sustain financially. Music will branch from the 50's doo-wop to more
modern music, with a veer towards holiday music for the upcoming
holidays. If anyone on this list might be interested, drop me a
line. If you're not interested, but still want to say hi and chat
about all things a cappella, drop me a line too!

Hope everyone is well!

In harmony,
Shawn Pearce

The only way to do it is to have the list additions by permission only. It's what I do on the 5 or so e-groups I started. I periodically get requests to be added to the list, and I ask what their connection is to the topic. Legit additions respond; spammer computers don't.

My guess is that John Neal is the moderator for this list, so it's in his court to take action.

I know that this group is for places a little further south of us but
I would just like to take a moment to introduce ourselves!

The Lake Effect is officially in force! The Lake Effect is Western
New York's first semi-pro acappella group ready to take the acappella
world by storm. Based in Buffalo, this 10-man group is a diverse mix
of guys with various musical backgrounds: from opera and classical to
jazz and of course, acappella, including a handful of alumni from the
Buffalo Chips, the University at Buffalo's award-winning all-male
acappella group. We're proud to have celebrated our first "gig" at a
local open mic night this past Sunday.

With that, let us also announce that we would like to audition for
our high-tenor spot as the member who was going to hold that spot is
relocating to Boston after (I believe) a 4th summer with the ever-
popular Hyannis Sound. If you live in the Western New York area or
know someone who does, please respond to this email (to the poster,
NOT this group), with your specs so we can review them and set up an
audition.

We look forward to entering the semi-pro realm of acappella and
meeting a lot of you in person as we move forward!

happy harmony!

Also, we have a new daytime venue, Olney Hall and Auditorium on the campus

previously over the two days of the event. Our standard sessions are in
place and we have classes confirmed on areas of interest such as vocal
percussion and contemporary arranging but we would like to hear from the a

The Showcase Concerts and Master Classes will take place as always but we
have not yet determined the participating groups.

If you would like to lead a a one-hour presentation, or have an idea/subject

Hi all,
Do you live in the Philadelphia area?

The Counterparts, a mixed a capella group based in the western
suburbs is currently holding auditions for Alto 1s, Alto 2s, Tenors
and Basses.

We meet on Monday evenings in the Radnor area with a wonderful
director. We try to sing locally once a month outside of rehearsal.
We are also members of the Spring Sing Association, which has 8-10
acapella groups of all types and sizes as members. We meet with them
in a different place each year to sing in concert for each other and
other interested fans. Lots of woodshedding as well!!!!

Did you sing in high school, college, the church choir? We recommend
singing as a great stress buster!

Email either Gretchen (gboehmler@...) or Neil
(neilde@...) and join us for an evening of singing.
Come and join the Counterparts!

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to pass along the word that The Lake Effect is currently
holding auditions for 2 open positions. While the powers-at-be are
willing to hear anyone with a good voice, we're primarily looking for
either high tenor or a solid low-bass.

The Lake Effect is an all-male, "rock-appella" style ensemble based
in Buffalo, NY. Auditionees preferrably should live in the
Buffalo/Rochester/Western NY area and be able to provide a high-level
of committment to rehearsal and performance times, and have solid
vocal skills, blending ability, and sight-reading ability. Vocal
percussion and arranging abilities also a plus.

Please inquire at auditions@...!!

Watch soon for the unveiling of our website!

Happy Harmony!

The pioneering, gospel/pop, a capella quartet that began in the
Tidewater Area of Virginia was "born" in the '30s; and they're still
kickin'!

The inspiring story of the Golden Gate Quartet--their beginnings and
rise to international fame is told in a musical play
called "Orlandus." The winner of the "Official Selection of the 2002
International Festival of Musical Theatre," Orlandus brings to life
the origins and the background of the Quartet's unique approach to
sacred hymns, which was termed "jubilee" singing--characterized by
driving rhythms and vocal percussion.

The story of their evolution to becoming one of the world's most
influential and artistically-successful a capella groups is told
through the eyes of Orlandus Wilson, the young man who joined the
group at age 16, and remained committed to overcoming any and all
obstacles as they rose to fame and success. This is the tale of
four young men who were united in harmony--yet divided in life and
the tenacity of Orlandus Wilson who kept it all together.

"Orlandus" runs from November 5th - 16th at the Murphy Fine Arts
Center. 2201 Argonne Drive, Baltimore, Maryland. It features
Cecelia Calloway (daughter of Cab Calloway) and members of the world-
renowned Morgan State University Choir.

Thank you to everyone who has requested further information on the VOICE A Cappella Ensemble auditions.

The VOICE A Cappella Ensemble, an artistic program of the Soul Sanctuary non-profit organization, is dedicated to celebrating and uplifting humanity by sharing our stories of womanhood through song. We strive to educate and enlighten our audiences by sharing music that explores the diversity and intricacies of the female experience.

Auditions will be held on Monday, December 8 from 7 to 9 pm at The Rotunda, 4014 Walnut Street next to The Bridge movie theater. The building's entrance is on the left side near the rear of the building. All vocalists are asked to prepare 2 short selections (verse and chorus) -- one ballad and one uptempo number of your choice. Contemporary hits, as well as showtunes, are welcome. The strongest candidates will be asked to remain after their audition to review additional arrangements with group members. Final notification will be made by telephone or e-mail before December 12.

Please note that we are most in need of soloists, tenors and vocal percussionists. Other vocal parts are welcome to audition; however your chances of being selected are slimmer, based on the group's current composition.

RSVP to VOICE@... to secure an audition timeslot and with any further questions.

We are excited about increasing our numbers and look forward to meeting you on Monday.

To All Fans of A Cappella Music,

We are very pleased to announce the date and location for the 20th
Annual Harmony Sweepstakes 2004 Mid-Atlantic Regional! The event
will be held for the third year in a row at The Birchmere Music Hall
on Sunday, April 4th!

As many of you know, The Birchmere is a fantastic venue for seeing
live a cappella! Plus they have great food and free parking! The
Birchmere booked up earlier than usual this year, so we were unable
to get a Saturday night as we would have liked, but The Birchmere is
such an unusual and a cappella friendly venue that we decided to do
it there on a Sunday rather than a lesser venue on a Saturday!

As you may know, last year's DC Regional Champs The Idea of North
also won the Nationals! The bad news is that The Idea of North's
schedule won't allow them to make it from Australia to host the
DC
Regional in 2004. The good news is that last year's hilarious
and
talented hosts and 2002 Regional champs The Tone Rangers have agreed
to host again this year! (And you may still get to see The Idea of
North in the area – we are working on putting together a gig at
The
Birchmere for another time, so stay tuned!) We will also be having a
showcase performance by local favorites and event producers dcVocals
for the third year running!

Below is everything you need to know about the show:
*Date: Sunday, April 4th, 2003 (This was incorrectly listed as March
22nd in the Primarily A Cappella Newsletter)
*Time: 7:30 (We may try to start a little earlier since it's a
school night – stay tuned!)
*Location: The Birchmere Music Hall, 3701 Mt. Vernon Avenue,
Alexandria, VA, 22305 (www.birchmere.com)
*Ticket Price: $20

***PLEASE BE SURE TO BUY YOUR TICKETS EARLY! THE BIRCHMERE ONLY
HOLDS 500 AND WE HAVE SOLD OUT THE PAST TWO YEARS RUNNING!!!**

Below is information on how to enter:
*Entry Deadline: January 31, 2004
*Rules: You must be a group of between three and seven members to be
eligible. You do not need to be from the Mid-Atlantic area! Please
go to http://www.harmony-sweepstakes.com/rules.html for a
comprehensive list of rules.
*Entry Requirements:
1) Go to http://www.harmony-sweepstakes.com/enter.html and follow
the instructions on either the online form or the PDF form.
2) Send a tape or CD and six 8x10 photos to Ted Donat, 36 E. Linden
Street, Alexandria, VA, 22301 by January 30, 2004. If you have
digital media, you can send it to ted_donat@.... (Please
note that my mailbox has a 10MB limit per message!)

We look forward to another great show!
