For more information about Almost Recess and to hear a sampling of
songs, visit www.almostrecess.com.

Class Acts Arts' Kaleidoscope Family Performance Series concludes its
2004-2005 season with a performance by the popular a cappella group
Almost Recess. The five talented singers, ages twenty-something, who
make up Almost Recess come from Maine, New York, Connecticut,
California and Virginia, are from very diverse musical backgrounds,
ranging from jazz drumming to trombone to piano. What unites them is
their love of singing and their enthusiasm for sharing the a cappella
art form with audiences of all ages.

Most astounding to audiences hearing contemporary a cappella
renditions of popular music for the first time -- is the percussive
vocalist. If you close your eyes you would swear there must be a
drum set on stage. You'll also hear convincing imitations of
trombone, trumpet, and more.

Dave Baumgartner, Beji Scarbeary, Brian Agosta, Nate Pipke, and Ryan
Driver make up Almost Recess. Their songs are delivered with
impeccable timbre, effectively imitating a band using only their
voices. The group's musical tastes and styles vary widely, and are
reflected in the Swing to Motown to Hard Rock songs they perform.
Each member of Almost Recess sang with an a cappella group in
college, and since graduating have made it a priority to teach youth
the importance of developing a musical foundation at a young age,
demonstrating the endless creative possibilities and pleasures
derived from the oldest instrument known to mankind: the human voice.

The performance takes place at the NOAA Auditorium, 1301 East West
Highway (Rt.410), Silver Spring, Maryland. Audience members should
arrive early due to security procedures.

Plenty of free parking is available at the second public parking
garage east of Colesville Road on East-West Highway. The theater is
two blocks from the Silver Spring metro on the red line.

Seating is limited, advance purchase recommended. All seats are
general admission.

All,

If you haven't bought your ticket for the 2005 Mid-Atlantic
Regional, you'd better hurry, because they are going fast! I spoke
to The Birchmere on Thursday and we had already sold 330 tickets!
That leaves only 170 of the hottest tickets in town!

Here are the particulars:
What: Harmony Sweepstakes Mid-Atlantic Regional
When: Saturday, April 9th
7:30 p.m. (Doors open at 5)
Where: The Birchmere Music Hall
3701 Mt. Vernon Avenue
Alexandria, VA
How: Tickets $22 at www.birchmere.com or The Birchmere Box Office

Unfortunately, Mosaic decided they couldn't swing the trip up from
Orlando to host, but local favorites The Tone Rangers have agreed to
reprise their shenanigans as hosts again this year (thanks, guys!).
The Rangers will be previewing material from their forthcoming CD
and perpetrating their unique brand of lunacy on the proceedings!

We will also have showcase performances by co-producers dcVocals and
Out of the Blue, visiting from England's Oxford University!

Here is the roster of competitors:

Almost Recess is a five-man vocal band from the Washington, DC area
whose mission is to bring kickin' a cappella music to every
single person in the world. This is Almost Recess's second time
around at the Mid-Atlantic and we are happy to have them back, and
not just because they are going to videotape the performance!

Cartoon Johnny is an energetic vocal band that pushes the limits of
traditional a cappella. Drawing on influences from classic soul to
modern alternative, they've crafted a sound and a repertoire of sure-
fire favorites and original music that brings audiences to their
feet show after show. The group has performed up and down the East
Coast, and has been honored to share the stage with some of the best
in the business, including DC favorites DaVinci's Notebook and 2003
Harmony Sweepstakes Champions The Idea of North. This will be
CJ's third go, and they just get better every year!

Rare Blend: Hailing from central Florida, Rare Blend fuses gospel,
vocal Jazz, classical, swing and doo wop. This will be Rare
Blend's first appearance at the Mid-Atlantic Regional.

Regency: This outstanding five man vocal musical ensemble began
singing on the street corners of Baltimore nearly 20 years ago.
Since then, they have earned a reputation as one of the undisputed
finest performing vocal ensembles in America. Incorporating their
own stylistic interpretations of Swing, Motown, Rock 'n Roll,
Beatles, and even Country Western into their songs, Regency brings
alive the music that America has learned to love. Their repertoire
includes the hot sounds of today mixed with the Motown magic of
yesterday – including the music of Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, The
Righteous Brothers, Sam Cooke, and The Temptations. They also
perform soulful renditions of artists from Elvis Presley and James
Brown to Boyz II Men and Take 6. The group's dynamic stage
presence, original choreography, and unique ability to engage their
audiences produces an energetic and entertaining show with audiences
invariably clamoring for more after each finale. The ensemble has
appeared in concert with many national headline acts including
Sinbad, Patti LaBelle, The Temptations, Manhattan Transfer, Ramsey
Lewis, Spyrogyra, and The Four Tops. Regency came in second in the
2003 competition and were narrowly bested by Aussie sensations The
Idea of North who would go on to win the Nationals. Watch out for
these guys!

Staticflow is a band with a unique, vocally-generated sound. The
group focuses on creating original music filled with passion, drive,
and soul, but also performs a number of popular covers. Each singer
in the group brings their own influences to bear on the sound,
filling the music with rich vocal textures, soaring leads, and
thumping bass and vocal percussion. This will be Staticflow's
second appearance at the Mid-Atlantic Regional.

Tonic & Gin is a seven-member co-ed a cappella group dedicated to
sharing a wide variety of music with intriguing arrangements,
amazing soloists, and a lot of fun! This is T&G's first
appearance in the Mid-Atlantic Regional.

Vocal Obsession is made up of five friends who have sung in various
groups for the past twenty years and decided to band together in the
service of a cappella music. Individually, the members have
performed throughout the US and Europe. This is Vocal
Obsession's first appearance.

Don't miss it!

Best regards,
Ted Donat

Just want to let everyone know that Groove Society's premiere CD is
now available!

Groove Society is a Denver-based jazz/R&B a cappella sextet. We've
been working extensively in the Rocky Mountain West since 2002 and
are now ready to let the rest of the world hear what we're about.
There's something for everyone on this CD: Jazz, Latin, R&B and pop
styles all infused with modern jazz voicings and grooves that will
take over your body!

"Just when you think you may have heard the `best', a vocal group
completes a long-standing effort to achieve perfection and the
marker is moved up. From the opening tune, `Oye Como Va' through
the last ballad `When October Goes', the stylish rhythms and
phrasings, the impeccable harmonies and stunning solos, and the
driving blend that never falters, all tell you this is a unique
effort by a very talented ensemble.... the best I could imagine
placing before the world stage. It's golden. Acquire it any way
you can!"
					 -Rol Sharette, The Colorado
Songster

The CD opens on Tito Puente's "Oye Como Va" complete with Santana-
like distorted guitar and authentic sounding Latin percussion,
followed by an intricate, mixed-meter rendition of "Summertime."
Next up is "Talvez Seja Voce" (formerly titled "Brasilia"), an
original jazz samba, co-written by our own Joe Herbert, that has
become a favorite among college jazz choirs around the world! Other
cuts include LaDamion's lusciously arranged cover of SWV's "Rain",
and Joe's 10-minute vocal endurance challenger, "Tribute to Earth
Wind & Fire" that has us singing four EWF songs simultaneously!
Whether you're into a well-blended ensemble sound or tasty solos, we
believe that we've created a product that will please any devoted a
cappella fan.

The CD can be purchased on our website at www.groovesociety.org .
Let us know what you think!

Thanks,

The urban a cappella band THREE 5 AND 6, http://www.three5and6.com is
actively seeking a bass vocalist to replace an outgoing member. The
band is located in Sacramento, CA and is currently making a push for
full-time status within the year.

This Christian, all male group imitates the full depth of instrumental
sounds found in a classic R&B or funk band as opposed to the
traditional "blended, one-voice" A Cappella sound. Their powerful beats
and bass drive a truly dynamic musical experience that fully engages
the listener.

THREE 5 AND 6 performs their own original music with a writing style
that displays a wide range of influences from Stevie Wonder and The Gap
Band to The Roots and KRS-One. Their debut CD, "Urban A Cappella" is
receiving incredible reviews and their original song, "Radiant Love"
was just awarded 2nd place in Billboard Magazine's World Song
Competition.

If you are interested or know of someone who might be, please contact
THREE 5 AND 6 at: 916-361-7777 or info@...

Pacific Northwest regional champs Groove For Thought took top honors
this weekend by being crowned National Champions at the Harmony
Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival National Finals. With only a few
points separating the groups it was one of the closest competitions in
years and once again the sell-out crowd was treated to some top notch
a cappella singing.

As producers of the show we try hard every year to truly find the most
exciting groups from around the country and to have the event be a
showcase, not only for them, but for a cappella music in general. I
think we can confidently say we have accomplished that once again this
year.

Thanks to all the groups who participated in our many events, to the
regional producers for all their hard work and a special thanks to the
audiences who year after year come out and support our shows. Here are
the complete results.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS - Groove For Thought

2nd Place - Face (Rocky Mountain)

3rd Place - Fiveplay (Chicago)

Audience Favorite - Face

Best Original Song - "Walk the Straighter Road" Kevin Kunz - Groove

I've had a couple requests from list members wanting to know if this
gig is still on. It is!! (The Mayorga phone staff can apparently be a
bit clueless.)

Please join BlueLine for a FREE farewell concert to our fabulous,
talented first soprano Bethie. After two terrific years with
BlueLine, Bethie has been promoted in her work at the National
Basilica to cantor, which is a great honor, but which will take all
of her vocal energies.

So we're sending her off with two hours of our finest music. Please
drop in!

WHERE: Mayorga Coffee Roasters, 8201 Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda, Md.

WHEN: Friday, May 13; First set begins at 8:30 pm; second set begins
around 9:45 pm

WHAT: BlueLine's Greatest Hits, i.e. all your favorite music and some
new tunes from our usual grab-bag of jazz, pop and gospel a cappella

HOW MUCH: Free admission! If you'd like to eat or drink, the
restaurant sells food as well as coffee, of course.

LOGISTICS: Free parking in the lot underneath the restaurant; lots of
comfortable seating; children welcome; equidistant from Medical
Center and Bethesda Red Line metro stops

MORE INFO: http://www.mayorgacoffee.com/bethesdapage.html

And in a related note, please spread the word that we're holding
auditions for a soprano! Here's the info:

We're looking for a talented soprano who can blend, read music, and
learn parts quickly. BlueLine, a co-ed sextet, has been performing
around the Washington, D.C., area since 1999. We pride ourselves on
being a fun and energetic group that performs a wide variety of
complex arrangements with tight harmonies. Our repertoire includes
jazz standards, pop tunes, gospel songs and original arrangements.
We're in the process of recording our first CD.
