Arden Concert Gild presents
University a Capella
Saturday, December 5 - 8 PM - $15 ($12 members and students) Groups rates for
10 or more.

Inspired by the recent Ben Folds album of such groups performing his music (Ben
Folds presents University a Cappella), this concert will include pop, rock,
jazz and Broadway songs done by:

The Deltones from University of Delaware (video here )

What began as a group of friends who loved to sing together back in 1991, has
since evolved into.... ummm.... a group of friends who to sing together in 2009.
Through many transformations and personnel changes, the essence of the Deltones
remains the same today as it did when it first started 18 years ago. The
Deltones have never forgotten that this group is friends first, singers second.
(From the Deltones website - let me add that these folks can sing!
Wonderfully!)

Off The Beat from University of Pennsylvania (video here )

Off the Beat is an award winning group that blends vocal harmony with Top 40
rock. Renowned for years for groundbreaking albums, Off the Beat performs to
large crowds at the University, the Kimmel Center and other regional venues.

The Deaftones from Westminster Choir College (video here )

Many students already find it hard to juggle homework and extracurricular
activities. Try being a member of Westminster Choir College's renowned a
cappella ensemble, Deaftones. Solely run by the group's 14 members from a
variety of majors and classes, Deaftones not only arranges its own music but
also administers its own rehearsals as well, and has been an active pop a
cappella group at Westminster for five years now.

With its recent win at the Mid-Atlantic quarterfinals of the International
Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) at Rutgers University on March 6,
Deaftones advanced to the semifinals but didn't place. This is an outstanding
accomplishment for such a new ensemble.

Tigertones from Princeton University (video here )

With a constantly expanding repertoire ranging from traditional ballads and jazz
to barbershop, Broadway, classic rock, and American pop, the Tigertones continue
to entertain audiences of all ages and musical tastes. Whether performing for
kindergartners in downtown Trenton, elderly audiences in Palm Beach or teenage
schoolgirls in Switzerland, the Tones and their songs have universal appeal.
Many of these songs have been captured on the Tigertones' thirty recordings, the
most recent of which, entitled "Feelin' Good", was released in the fall of '08.

The Tigertones are Princeton's signature all male a cappella group. After sixty
years and thirty recordings, we continue to thrive and to keep alive a tradition
of "Good Friends and Good Music", sharing with audiences of all ages the
harmony, spontaneity, and brotherhood that have become our trademarks.

opening the show will be the JazzChords of Calloway from Wilmington's own Cab
Calloway School for the Arts ( video here )

The JazzChords of Calloway, the premier jazz choir of the Cab Calloway School of
the Arts, was established in 1997 when Bob McGrath (Bob from Sesame Street)
appeared at the Grand Opera House and needed a jazz choir to back him onstage.

Since then, the JazzChords have performed throughout Delaware, at the Hard Rock
Cafe in NYC, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Rays Starlight Cafe in Disney
World (Orlando), the Convention Center in Philadelphia and onboard the Norwegian
Dawn cruise ship. We have sung for the Governors of many states, US Senators and
Congressmen, the dedication of the NCC Courthouse, State Treasurer Jack
Markell's Swearing in Ceremony and we have sung every year since 2002 at the
Clifford Brown Jazz Festival which is the largest outdoor jazz festival on the
East Coast.

Arden University a Capella Festival - Saturday December 5, 2009 - $15 ($12
members) - Tickets available online! Group rates available for students and
adults.

Dear Mid-Atlantic A Cappella Fans and Friends,

I hope everyone is having a good holiday season!

First and foremost, in case you have not heard, last year's Mid-Atlantic Regional and Nationals champs MAXX Factor made it to the finals of NBC's a cappella competition "The Sing-Off" (http://www.nbc.com/sing-off/).  They are one of only eight finalists competing.  We are just tickled that A Cappella is finally getting the attention it so rightfully deserves in the national spotlight!  The show starts tonight, so make sure to tune in!

(Way to go, ladies!  We're rooting for you!  Don't forget your friends at the Mid-Atlantic Sweeps!  We need you to host next year's show!)

Speaking of which, here are the particulars for next year's show (entry information follows below):

  • Date: Saturday, April 10, 2010
  • Time: 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 5)
  • Location:

The Birchmere Music Hall
3701 Mt. Vernon Avenue
Alexandria, VA 22305
www.birchmere.com

  • Ticket Price: $35 plus Ticketmaster fees*
  • How to purchase tickets: Tickets go on sale after Christmas at the Birchmere box office any evening there is a show or at www.birchmere.com

* OK, so I can hear the collective screams of our loyal fans from here in Sweeps Central.  Let me say that we fought very hard to keep the ticket prices down.  That is why this announcement is about three weeks later than usual - we have been going back and forth with The Birchmere management on this point.  Unfortunately, we were not successful, and it is too late to secure another venue.  I know that this is a lot of money, especially in the current economy, but keep in mind that our show is at the low end of the spectrum when it comes to ticket prices for shows at The Birchmere.  Their costs have gone up, and they need to make a buck like everybody else.  The production team vows to do everything in our power to make sure you get your money's worth.  We appreciate your understanding on this point…

(And no, I can't do a thing about those pesky Ticketmaster fees, either. :( )

Do you love to sing in a quartet?

Do you love it when the other 3 guys know their parts cold?

Do you love to sing with new guys at conventions, but are limited to polecats.

Are you the most prepared guy in your chorus?

If you answered Yes to ANY of the above – then its time for some EXtreme
Quartetting at the Atlantic Harmony Brigade weekend.

The Atlantic Harmony Brigade weekend is a very special weekend in August (It's
my favorite weekend of the year).. 124 quartet singers come together in
balanced parts– 100% prepared on 12 international caliber songs after 16 weeks
of individual preparation.

At times it seems like the combinations of great quartets is endless – I usually
sing all night – clocking in only a few hours of sleep for the weekend. It's
intoxicating when you have 12 great songs to choose from and 3 other singers who
just know their part..

After the event - when convention time comes, now you have all these new songs
to sing. This will be my 4th year – so I will have 48 fabulous songs to sing
with other Brigaders.

Does this sound appealing to you? If so, check out the website
http://www.atlanticharmonybrigade.com to find out all the details and to apply.

Applications are reviewed on a first come basis. Applications for new
participants sponsored by a AHB Member have priority review until 2/15/10.
Final Deadline for application is 3/1/10.

Men,

The Alexandria Harmonizers are having a Guest Night on Tuesday, January 19th
from 7-10PM at the Durant Center, 1605 Cameron Street Alexandria, Virginia.
C'mon out and check us out. We're now over 100 men, but we'd love to add more.

We're currently working on an incredible package that we will perform here
http://www.alexandriaharmonizerspresent.com/ahp/HOME.html and here
http://barbershop.org/philly-main.html in the next six months. It includes this
song, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO88JOiJ1c8, a new arrangement of a
classic, a beautiful ballad never sung in our style before, and more. We're
adding great new songs to our repertoire. We had a big year last year, with two
performances in New York, including one before the judges and a live audience at
America's Got Talent. We performed at the U.S. Supreme Court. We've got a
number of guys with contemporary a cappella experience, including some who are
now singing in that style on some of our shows. We had a small ensemble win
Audience Favorite at last year's Mid Atlantic Harmony Sweepstakes. C'mon over
here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI8bSVNIJps and join the fun.

You can learn more about us at www.harmonizers.org, or our facebook fan page,

About us: We are DCVocals. We’ve been performing in the area for more than a
decade. We perform at festivals, private events, and the occasional open mic. We
are coed and range in age from 25 to…a lot older than that. We are funny, or
at least we like to think that we are.

About you: You like to sing. More importantly, you’re good at it. You probably
have collegiate singing experience, a capella or otherwise.

We'll be holding auditions over the next few weeks. Auditions consist of a
warm-up, a few scale/range exercises, and a solo audition piece performed by
none other than YOU!

If this all sounds good to you, then send us an email at dcvocals@...! You
can check out our website (www.dcvocals.com) for more information.

Potential members should be able to read music, have a good ear, the ability to blend and good sight reading skills.  Having fun with singing friends is a must.

Auditions are by appointment at our rehearsal location, St. James Episcopal Church in Wilmington, Delaware.  (Not downtown Wilmington, but near Kirkwood Highway)

Contact Ryan at opusonejazz@... for more information or to schedule an audition.

Sorry, sopranos and altos.  We do not have any openings for you at this time.  Please pass this notice onto a gent who'd like to sing with us.

The AM/FM a cappella barbershop group in Gaithersburg, will reach 5 years and 5 months as an organized group next week. We'd like to offer male vocalists in the area an opportunity to come and join us next Monday, January 25. Rehearsal is from 7-9 Monday evenings, and alternates between one of our members' house near the Lakeforest Mall, and the Gaithersburg Church of the Nazarene. Call or drop me an email if you are interested in giving it a shot.

Ladies, we are not trying to exclude you. But our wives have a vested interest in keeping you out. Love to have you join, and if there are enough of you to cover the parts, I'd be happy to help you get a group together. Of course, if you have an "other half" with harmonic appeal, send him my way, and I'll see what we can do for him.

Sincerely,

seamless harmony and thunderous vocal percussion. You'll swear they have a back
up band... but they don't.

Blue Jupiter is best known as the voices of Oreo Cookie, singing the national
Oreo radio commercial since 2005. Over the past 6 years, Blue Jupiter has
worked with famed producer and American Idol Judge Randy Jackson, sang with
Livingston Taylor and performed on Oprah and VH1's Save the Music. They've
headlined charity events for the American Cancer Society, The Red Cross, Braking
the Cycle, Hartford Children's Hospital and many others. Blue Jupiter has been
voted "Audience Favorite" multiple times at the Harmony Sweepstakes and has
appeared at countless NACA (National Association of Campus Activities),
showcases including the 2008 National Showcase in St. Louis.

Blue Jupiter's notoriety flourishes overseas having headlined at the Sands
Casino in Macau, China in 2007, performing at multiple theatrical venues in
Shanghai and Hong Kong, and was the featured headlining act for the Fourth of
July celebration for over 10,000 American troops at the Kadena Airbase in
Okinawa, Japan.
Besides their main-stage theatrical performance, Blue Jupiter also tours across
the country with one of the top arts in education programs for vocal music
dubbed A Cappella University. And form November through January, Blue Jupiter
presents their holiday show: Scattered Flurries – a high-energy theatrical show
that incorporates songs celebrating both Christmas and Chanukah.

AM/FM is an a cappella men's ministry meeting in Gaithersburg. We are a multi-denominational/non-denominational group of Christian men who enjoy singing hymns and gospel in harmony. We're always looking for guys with a similar interest.

We're a bunch of 40-60 year old guys, but we're not exclusive either to the high or low side of that. Most of our music is in the barbershop style. There're also a few patriotic songs, show songs, and some doo-wop. Any part will do. We have 9 guys now, and are probably most in need of either a solid high (I mean VERY high) tenor, or a pedal bass (WAY down below that pesky F).  But if you're interested in serving, are able to sing reasonably well, can cover your own part with nobody else singing in your ear, and enjoy harmony, we'll take you!!!

By the way, no pulse required.

Sincerely,
John W. Hosie III

BVJE is a new “a cappella pops” organization and we're looking to expand our membership. It is a unique group singing five to nine part arrangements. The music ranges from swing of the 40's to ballads of the 80's; Duke Ellington to Madonna.  Auditions are currently being held for all parts, Soprano through Bass.

The ensemble is currently rehearsing at “Bright View” located at 8100 Rossville Blvd., Baltimore, MD 21236; at 7:00 PM on Thursday nights and auditions are held at 6:30 or after rehearsal (to fit your schedule).  More information about the group's Arranger/Director Joe Mannherz can be found at www.highfivelive.com. You can observe the group perform on you tube's

"Baltimore Vocal Jazz Ensemble/a house is not a home".

If your current choir/band isn't giving you the musical “satisfaction” you originally anticipated, and you would like to pioneer a new group singing fascinating arrangements with vocal percussion, give us a call.

Established a cappella vocal band and Three Time American Harmony Sweepstakes
Honoree seeks a male vocal performer age 18-35 in appearance (preferably 21+)
for permanent placement with the band.

We have performed throughout the greater Washington D.C., Northern Virginia,
Maryland area; and we have recorded content. Local appearances have included The
Birchmere, Jammin Java, The Lubber Run theatre, Bar mitzvahs, and in venues
throughout the region for private and public bookings.

Please read the information below thoroughly.

TO SCHEDULE AN AUDITION OR INQUIRE FURTHER:

Send us an email!

Please provide information about yourself, as well as soundclips, if you have
them.

REQUIREMENTS

ONE: Voice. You are a male vocalist, HIGHLY competent within your vocal range,
with both the ability to sing a styled, compelling lead (aka "rock out") in your
voice range and the ability to blend/harmonize as a background vocalist. IN
ORDER OF PREFERENCE, we are seeking (1) true basses; (2) countertenors/male
sopranos; (3) tenors. Baritones are welcome if they are strong performers and
improve other dimensions of the act.

TWO: Ear. You are able to harmonize/tune easily by ear and learn pre-established
parts via sheet music, or part tapes, or another method of self-learning,
preparing outside of rehearsals with the intent of bringing your preparation for
group time. Sightreading, theory, other instrument/music tech skill backgrounds
a plus. Strong relative pitch a must, good pitch memory a bonus. Incidentally,
any formal education (particularly postsecondary) in music performance,
education, and/or technology is a huge bonus.

THREE: Supplemental Skills. You may have other vocal arts experience (vocal
percussion / beatboxing / spoken word / rapping / vocal effects / MCing / public
speaking / impersonations), any of which are a plus but are not substitutes for
ability to sing (see "ONE", above). Demonstrated stage presence, energy, and
charisma, however, are closer to requirements than pluses. You have the ability
to work and play well with others and contribute beyond learning and performing
music (this can range from organizational/business aspects to lugging gear
around).

FOUR: Audition. You must be available for an in-person audition, and local to
Northern Virginia and the surrounding area, or committed to a frequent commute.

FIVE: If you are selected, you must be available to rehearse with the band a
minimum of one to two times per week (more as required). Our rehearsal locations
vary, but are usually within about 30 minutes away from downtown DC. You are
committed to prioritizing the band amidst your personal and professional
schedule for the purposes of furthering the act and remaining in the greater DMV
area for the longer term.

Posting this on behalf of an a cappella aficionado, really an aca junkie, who is
not local to DC but is planning on being here to support Singstrong, and who
should probably relocate to the Mid Atlantic area based on time spent doing a
cappella in the DC area to raise the a cappella bar.
Spreading the word through all a cappella channels...

Speaking of Bar...

He's with the vocal band Double-Shot!

See his plea below-

I didn't know for sure whether I could attend SingStrong until this week and now
I can't find a ticket for the Saturday show.

Does anyone have an extra or know of someone who does? If so, please put me in
touch.

I'd be willing to consider purchase of a weekend pass if you had an extra one of
those instead.

Willing to pay face value, owe you a favor, and buy your first round at the
afterparty!

Dear Friends,

We are delighted to announce the lineup for the 2010 Harmony Sweepstakes Mid-Atlantic Regional!  Competition was extremely stiff this year – no doubt owing to the refreshing lift that a cappella received from the NBC Sing-Off! competition.  As a result, we have a very strong lineup this year!

Returning to host this year from Baltimore is MAXX Factor.  As you know, after winning the region last year, MAXX Factor went on to win the Nationals. They followed that up with a spot on the NBC competition Sing-Off!,where they did themselves very proud in a field of extremely diverse and talented competitors – all with a lot more than just four voices to rely on!

Here is the lineup for this year:

  • DoubleShot! – The boys from Pittsburgh, PA are back for more hijinks in "Ohten"!
  • Euphonism – Back with a new lineup are local favorites Euphonism.
  • Fleur de Lisa – This quirky quartet from Durham, NC are prepared to take on all comers!
  • Glorious – This Richmond, VA gospel quartet competed in 2006 and 2007 and we are glad to have them back!
  • Lustre – This Sweet Adelines group from Baltimore wowed the judges last year and are back for another shot.
  • Tonic & Gin – Returning for their 3rd year, these local faves are going forit again!
  • Voices of Truth – Testify!  This Contemporary Christian ensemble is ready to bring the fire!
  • The West Side 5 – These newcomers to the Mid-Atlantic Regional from my old stomping grounds in NYC are smooth as silk!
