I'm going through it for the second time now, and finding
it very worthwhile. Hearing the band without McLaughlin
is interesting (as is hearing McLaughlin's sets unedited),
although as a listener I don't hear as much difference as
they do. Of course, I love McLaughlin's playing, so for
me it's a welcome addition--as it apparantly was for Miles
who used his night exclusively on Live Evil. However,
the overall sound is very similar.
They played and recorded 10 sets that night, of which 6
are presented here. One set is missing from each night
(they played 2 on W + Th, 3 on F + S). My guess is that
the wish to keep to keep the cost under $100 is the motive
for not releasing the whole thing, but I don't know for
certain.
The only hint of an explanation is regarding set 1 on
Saturday which, being the only totally unreleased set of
that night, would seem like an obvious choice to include.
Apparantly in addition to arriving late that night,
McLaughlin had some equipment problems. Still, I would
have liked that set included.
Overall, something you'll want if you love Live Evil
(unless McLaughlin was the only thing you liked about that
release), but probably shouldn't bother with if you don't.
