Great to see you're back! I plan to whip up a web page later this
afternoon. I'll let you know what the site is as soon as it goes up.

In the meantime, what is your favorite Miles album?

I like Kind of Blue and Milestones best. Although I can really get into a
Bitches Brew mood on some days...

Hello!
I'm 24(9/9/74) and I'm Portuguese (so English is not my first language so don't
pay attention to the mistakes I might make whenever I send messages to the
list).
I discovered Miles Davis 9 years ago when I saw a French movie from Louis Malle,
definitely a great movie, and the thing that most surprised me was the
music..... The soundtrack was totally signed by Miles.... the result was
superb.... Before that my knowledge about jazz didn't exist.

I agree with you about Kind of blue, it is my favourite album... "So What" and
"Flamenco Sketches" are masterpieces, maybe the most relaxing and beautiful
melodies I've ever heard. I think that what also makes that album so special is
the quality of the musicians by that time.... Coltrane and Bill Evans... words
what for?

If I had to refer another album I'd say "Miles Ahead"
About the list...I stayed very surprised when I discovered that there wasn't any
list dedicated to Miles...
Well hope to have some feedback from you...

See ya!!!

Hi,

I'm Asaph. I'm 23 years old and live in Toronto, Canada. I discovered
Miles about 2 years ago when I started collecting vinyl. My first
exposure was through my interest injazz-fusion. I loved albums like
Herbie Hancock's Headhunters and Billy Cobham's Spectrum. I then learned
that there was an album entitled Bitches Brew which started that whole
movement. So I bought it. Well, Bitches Brew proved to be a bit much for
at that point but when I heard Kind of Blue and Milestones, I was hooked.
And now I love bitches brew too!

I'm going to buy Miles Ahead today. It's on sale at a music store nearby!

Do you have the Columbia CD release of Kind of Blue with the bonus track
alternate take of Flamenco sketches?

Asaph

PS. Thanks to everyone who joined the list on the first day. At this rate
we should have a high traffic list in no time!

Hi Asaph!

Kind of Blue!
The CD I have is a japanese edition, doesn't have the bonus track....
I Know the Columbia/Legacy CD release you mentioned because my Sketches from
Spain is from that release.....
Unfortunately they can make the number of releases they want...but the sound
quality it will always be the same and that is what bothers me most- The albums
I enjoy are from end of fifties, sixties....I don't know if it is psychological
or not but whenever I listen to those recordings it seems I can only hear the
background noise (don't know how you call it in English) of the recording.....

Last summer I bought a CD " Soaring with Byrd " from James Zollar from a new
jazz label NAXOS jazz. All musics from Charlie Parker recorded with nineties
technology.

Did you enjoy Miles Ahead?!

See ya!

I agree 100% with you about the Japanese Miles discs sounding much
better. I have compared the Japanese version of KOB with the columbia
version and it sounds 1000 times better. I still own both because I like
the bonus track though.

I got the Japanese version of Miles Ahead today. I just popped it into my
stereo right now. Sound great so far.

I also still need to get myself some Charlie Parker. Do you have any
recommendations where to start?

Hi Asaph!

Unfortunately I don't have any recommendations because before buying the CD I
mentioned, the only thing I knew from Charlie Parker was an anthology owned by a
guy that lived the same house I did.
Since that time, through internet, I tried to get information about Charlie
Parker's discography, but it is necessary to take a degree about his career
because there are thousands of recordings...The sound quality is a problem
because all original recordings were made before 1955...

Do you know the album Nefertiti (think it is named like that)?

About the list, is it growing or what?!!

See ya!

Miles doesn't rap on Doo-Bop. I'd be scared to hear him rap, as a matter of
fact. But Easy-Mo-Bee (whoever he was/is) does rap on three cuts.

I don't personally own it, but I've heard it a few times at a friend's

I can locate the Japanese version or good condition vinyl.

Taking a cue... here's a bit about me and my Miles/jazz background.

My name is Nathan, I live in Texas where I work for a public radio station.
I have been listening to jazz for about eight years now, and have been a fan
of Miles Davis for that entire time. The first album that really got me
hooked on the man was "Bitches Brew"-- I was coming out of a background of
progressive & classic rock, so I really dug the stuff. After that, I went
back to the '60s, '50s, and into the '80s.

As for my Miles Davis collection, I have no real "bootleg" recordings of
Miles Davis, but I estimate that I have about 80 hours of material spread
out over albums on Prestige, Columbia, and Warner Bros., with a few
miscellaneous recordings in there as well.

The most recent acquisition-- an advance copy of "The Complete Miles Davis &
John Coltrane" on Columbia/Legacy. It's scheduled to be released in October
of this year.

I'm looking forward to more people signing on to the list.

Pedro,

Concerning Charlie Parker, I have a nearly complete set of his stuff
and what you need to know is that Rhino put out a two CD set a while
back called "Yardbird Suite". It has a dark red jacket. It is as good a
collection of his music as most people would ever need.

If you really want to go ahead and get in depth, the essentials for an
"ornithologist" are The Complete Dial Sessions", "The Complete Savoy
Studio Sessions", "The Complete Royal Roost Sessions" (recently issued
in a set called "The Complete Live Savoy Sessions" and "The Complete
Charlie Parker On Verve". These are the pillars of his legacy. The
Rhino Yardbird Suite draws from all these sources and does a great job
of picking a lot of the essential material....

Fair warning with Bird, it's hard to get enough, the guy was huge!

Anyway, I just wanted to sign in on the Miles list here. Hello to all!
My dad is a trumpet player, so I have listened to Miles most all of my
nearly 40 years of life. I once collected Miles CDs and when I got a
CaseLogic book filled with 100 of them, I gave it to dad so he wouldn't
have to wear out his vinyl anymore. I'm now re-collecting the catalog
again. Not having the single discs anymore has freed me up to get the
boxes that have been coming out without fear of duplication, however,
collecting the Japanese mini-LP sleeves has me duplicating the boxes
now. I worked at Tower Records for several years and was a Jazz Buyer
there for awhile, so I'm pretty familiar with the catalog.

concerning Doo-Bop...Miles plays like Miles, but the guy they got to
rap is really not even a good rapper, so I'd avoid it until you have
most of the other stuff. For a swansong, much better to find Miles and
Quincy Live at Montreaux (it's OOP, so look in the used bins). It's
unique because it's perhaps the only time Miles ever looked back at his
old work, this one remembers his recordings with Gil Evans.

thanks for bringing me aboard Asaph,

crabgrass baby

Dan, Thanks for the info on Charlie Parker and doo-bop. The problem with
getting a compilation like Yardbird Suite is that if I really like the
artist (this happens often), I try to pursue the artist's whole discography.
This leads to lots of useless overlap with the compilation. I'll probably
start with the set that contains the song Yardbird suite, which I know
from other artists who have covered it. Which set contains this song
(other than the compilation from Rhino).

As for doo-bop, I guess I'll avoid it for now...

The new Columbia box set is made up of six CDs. It features 18 (if I
remember correctly) tracks that are unreleased. A bit of studio chatter,
examples: false start on "Freddie Freeloader," many alternate versions of
"Sweet Sue, Just You," and more versions (live & otherwise) of "Two Bass
Hit" than you can shake a stick at.

As for the packaging, I'm sure it will be similar to the previous three
boxes, hardbound, etc. My copy features the six discs only and a short
introduction by Michael Cuscuna. The real deal will have over 100 pages of
annotations and photos.

Later!

Hello MF (Miles Fans or MatherF... - as Miles Davis would have said)
One more on the list !

Someone asked:
>Has anyone heard Doo-Bop? Supposedly, Miles raps in it. Is this album >any
>good?

In this album Miles is Miles. The phrasing is energetical and the impro or
full of melodies. Do not listen to the lyrics and you will enjoy the Album.
Excellent for Sunny Sunday morning...

And someone else suggested:
>For a swansong, much better to find Miles and
>Quincy Live at Montreux
I do not consider this album good. The orchestra is not good (if you compare
to the original an subtile Gil Evans one) and Miles is only the shadow of
himself. It is surprising because Miles was extremely good and moving at the
end of his life. Listen to the last tune of the live album "Around The
World" ! It is too bad that the published version is cut by 10 minutes, but
you can listen to a beautiful trumpet playing... I personaly saw him in Rome
during his last European Tour in july 1991 (he died in september). It was SO
good...I have to hope that one day we will have a CD from one of his last
shows. Let´s hope...

I really hate trying to block out elements of a song so I can enjoy the
song. I feel this way about Miles' Tutu album. Although there are some
excellent compositions on this disc, I always have to block out all those
cheezy 1980's synthesizers and midi effects. I can't help thinking that if
Tutu was recorded in the 50's or 60's, it would be so much better. The
older recordings sound so much earthier due to the instuments used and the
recording equipment.

I only suggested that the Miles & Quincy in Montreaux was a better
swansong than Doo-Bop. The rapping and arrangements on Doo-Bop are
embarressing and were dated before the record was even released.

I thought the band on the M & Q record was fine. It suffers a bit from
the "all-star" vibe that can mar things like this.

Too bad Warner couldn't have hooked Miles up with some real rappers
like Public Enemy or Ice-T or someone.

Here's my two cents about Doo-Bop and Montreux.

When Montreux first came out, I thought it was great because I was so
excited to hear the material again played by Miles. In retrospect, it's not
the best sounding album. The bass is "direct," and doesn't really sound
good. Miles is a bit weak on this date, and the band sounds a little
off-kilter at times. But, that's a live gig for you. They didn't exactly
tour this thing around the world, so you couldn't get the "best" takes like
on "Live Around the World."

I think "Doo-Bop" is a great album... Miles was moving into the hip-hop
world (finally), which is much more in the spirit of his forward-thinking
musical lifestyle. Not all the numbers work on the disc, but "Fantasy" has
a great melody, and "Chocolate Chip" has a real snap to it.

There's my two cents!

Here are some of the CD releases of Bitches Brew:

Columbia Jazz Masterpieces 2CD
Columbia 2CD - same as above but repackaged in a thin 2CD Jewel case and new
back cover.
Sony Mastersound 2CD (Japanese)
The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions 4CD

As far as I'm concerned the first 2 aren't worth owning. I have the second 2 but
hate the fact that I need to own both. Although the box set has tons of extra
tracks (almost 3X the size of the original), the Japnese version sounds so much
better. Plus I read somewhere that there are remixing problems with the box set.
I haven't been able to detect them yet though. Does anyone have any thoughts on
this?

I agree with you and I do not like TUTU Album. The Miles playing is too
heavely edited, that s why live material are much better. I never listen to
the Studio version of those stuff. You are under arrest and Aldmanla are the
same. Live version or much better... Unfortunately officially only Miles in
Paris (Video) and Around the world can give an idea of the magical moments
that were Miles Davis Shows in the late 80ůs early 90.

1) Kind Of Blue - The obvious and perhaps the single finest recording
in all of recorded music. It takes all of one minute to establish this.
So What builds tension from the first note until a cymbal crash
releases it into a world of beauty at about 1:07 in....

2) Miles Ahaed - Miles first project with Gil is still my favorite
them, unfairly overshadowed by the later Porgy & Bess and Sketches Of
Spain. Gil used to call Miles up late at night and tell him, "Miles, if
you are ever said, just listen to Springsville". Fresh as a daisy, it
includes the wonderful "Blues For Pablo". Absolutely essential.

3) Miles Davis Vol. 1 & 2 - The Blue Note sessions...Miles said these
are among the few things of his own he would ever go back and listen to
again and it's easy to see why. It's too bad Miles didn't do more
things with J.J. Johnson then he did, these man play well together.
Young Miles is hitting for the fences and letting the world know what
they had to deal with. Hard-Bop roots on display here.

4) Cookin' and Relaxin' With The Miles Davis Quintet - "I'll play it
first and tell you what it is later". An apex not only of Miles'
career, but of Coltrane's and hard-bop in general. Watershed
recordings.

5) The Complete Live At The Plugged Nickel - Perhaps the best of the
box sets yet to appear, this thing is like yards and yards, miles and
miles of the finest fabric one can find. The group is growing right
before your ears. Tony Williams is beyond belief as the kids give old
man Miles a run for his money. Miles has some tricks up his sleeve as
well and the boys are forced to stretch it until in can't be stretched
any more. This is music that is almost completely and purely
communication. Mind boggling.

I think that the pre-fusion free bop era with the second quintet is HIGHLY
underrated. I think that its ALLL AMAZING. I never heard a second of MILES
DAVIS that I didn't LOVE with a passion... but to be honest, even though
Birth and the other collaborations with GIL are wonderful, STILL ranking as
my faves, I don't put them in the same ESTEEEM as I do things like ESP or
BITCHES BREW or KINDA BLUE because those are all 100% miles, but Birth sounds
more WHITE, it sounds like Gil... still great stuff... but not my fave.

On the other hand, Filles de Killemanjaro... now THERE is an amazing disc.
