Paul's been a real trooper. I'm hoping everything goes smoothly.

Unfortunately there's no way to make a small number of decent-quality
shirts at anything remotely resembling affordability; I've been
looking into doing shwag for Atomic City and for mindSpiral for a
long time, and it's just been prohibitive. I should look again; I
doubt I could do a specific shirt for that one show (the crowd's way
too small for there even to be a chance of decent merch sales) but a
generic mindSpiral shirt might be a goer. Along with the Atomic City
shirt I never made and the Different Skies shirt I never made. Sigh...

Thanks for your letters of concern, those of you who wrote to ask if they'd
missed the boat on the first mindSpiral CD, _the 1 is silent_. CD Baby is only
*temporarily* out of stock; they burned through their first box of CDs pretty
quickly, and will repost the CD as being available when the box I just shipped
them arrives and gets processed. That should only take a few days, and I'll
flag folks when the album's back in stock again.

Apologies for the inconvenience, and thanks for listening.

On behalf of Giles, John, Darwin... and Fritz,

mike

any time. It's at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/mindspiral and I thank you for your

Hi Mike,

I just came up with a concept for a piece. Is this the proper place to

Absolutely! Time to get this list fired up again anyway. I know that
you and I and John 3 are on it, and we're the boys with the noise
this time out.

For those of you coming late to the proceedings:

1. The mind3Spiral show will be at the Fiske on April 7.

2. Yes, the website is horribly out of date! I need to update it
badly and will do so ASAP.

3. The original gang for this year was going to be myself, Bill Fox,
John 3 Rossi, Darwin Grosse, and Tony Gerber. Darwin found out he has
to be in Frankfurt until a day or two before the show, but will be
providing me with some virtual participatory material for Ableton
Live before he leaves. (So instead of "I got nothing!" this year it
will be "I got virtually nothing".) Tony has gotten an absolutely
fantastic (hopefully not once in a lifetime, though!) gig back on his
side of the USA that conflicts with our date, so he had to bow out a
couple of days ago. So at the moment we're down to a trio. As I said
to Bill and John 3, what the heck, Tangerine Dream did okay as a
trio, right? :)

4. There is still the possibility of a fourth member, but it's a long
shot with this little time to make travel plans; I've already been
down the list of the guys with a karmic inside track for slots to
replace Tony, and no one on that list can get away. I may ask some
other folks, though, depending on what kind of a gumbo I think
they'll make with me, Bill, and John 3.

I will make a final decision about whether we're even going to bother
trying to get a fourth person within the next few days.

John and Bill, you both can crash at my place, although you'll have
to flip a coin for who gets the guest bedroom and who gets the futon
in the living room.

Man! I would really like to be the 4th member, but I don't think I'd be
able to deicate the practice time needed. Why oh why do people need to

I pretty much take three to four days completely off work, not to
mention prep time before the guys even get here. This year, because
of what I'm likely to have to be able to provide, it's going to be
especially tough. There'll be other chances, Jesse. You haven't done
enough live stuff to suit the local fandom! :)

Hmmm... not sure what you mean by this. I have many local fans but I
think I'd be better working as a solo artist anyway as I find it more
challenging than working with others. Not to mention Metlay hasn't done
enough live shows to suit the local fandom either! :) I hear ya, I'm in
the same boat as you my friend. - J.

Just that we haven't had enough Numina concerts, that's all!

Yeah, but the difference is, I was challenged to the point of
stoppage by solo work for so many years that eventually I decided it
wasn't worth it, so I punted and moved to groups instead. I'm much
happier now, and I get way more music done.

Good. Unfortunately, my idea sounds lame to me today but I'll share any
way...

Title: Ambient Ping (like the event in Toronto.)
Source sounds: pings, bells, tings, drones and things
Processing: reverbs, delays, panning, frequency shifting, etc.
I just set up my laptop to do four channel sound and rediscovered
enthusiasm for that immersive environment brought on my thoughts for
this piece.

BTW, I'd love to find a freeware VST plugin for PC that does frequency
shifting. Please note that I said frequency and not pitch.

Cheers,

Bill

What, exactly, do you want your frequency shifter to do?  I created one in Max that could easily be changed into a Pluggo (which runs on PC);  but I'm not sure what you want...

Ah, I see... I get asked all the time to play live but I'm just not in a
position to gig these days... and probably never. At least not while I'm
a civil engineer. Too much of a demanding job. It stinks but it buys the
toys.

At least we'll be able to go to the show! Keep me posted.

What I'd like is a VST version of Jurgen Haible's frequency shifter:
<http://jhaible.heim.at/jh_fs2/jh_fs2.htm> Jurgen has a page for his
first frequency shifter here:
<http://jhaible.heim.at/tonline_stuff/hj_fs.html>

A frequency shifter will shift the input by however many Hz you set on
the control. There should also be an input to control the shift amount,
"1V/Octave" response desirable. Remember, shifting by Hz means that
harmonic relationships of the input signal are NOT maintained. For
example: An input signal that has 100 Hz, 200 Hz, 300 Hz, and 400 Hz
components and is shifted by 5 Hz yields an output having 105, 205, 305,
and 405 Hz components, NOT 105, 210, 315, and 420 Hz components. (That
would be a pitch shifter if the harmonic relationships were maintained.)

It is important to be able to shift by very small amounts (0.05 Hz) as
well as large amounts (5kHz or greater). Shifting up as well as down is
important, too. Shifting a wideband input signal is a must.

Jurgen used to have an audio file of how it sounds but I don't see it
now. If anyone is interested, I'll write and ask about it.

Cheers,

Bill

Greetings,

My plans are finally set. I will be arriving in Denver on Tuesday,
April 3, at 8:12 pm on Northwest Airlines flight NW 1225 via Detroit. I
will be leaving on Sunday, April 8, at 8:00 am on Northwest Airlines
flight NW 1224.

Will anyone be at the airport around those times? I'd like to bum a
ride if possible or share a rental car if needed. My budget doesn't
allow me to rent a car all on my own. I'll have the same heavy load of
luggage that you see me with at DS; two large cases on wheels, brief
case loaded to the gills, and guitar. Bum bag will also be loaded with
paraphanalia.

Cheers,

Bill

P.S. Mike- Let's talk about the VS.

Okay, the way we'll work it, if all are okay with this, is: Tuesday,
John 3 will come to my workplace in the afternoon, then home with me,
we'll get the kids home and settled and then head out to pick up
Bill. Sunday morning that's a really early departure (blech!), John,
could you drive Bill and drop him off then get rid of your car before
catching your own flight? 3-1/2 hours is a lot but it'd save me the
extra trip...

still do have the sleep issue (which Is why I was going to stay by
the airport on Sunday night.

I haven't loaded the Win version into Vista yet. My guess is that
it will work. BTW, you never sent Voice set #2

I'm ignorant about what a Universal Binary is. Can I use that on my PC
or is that a Mac-only thing? What does UB buy you? I'll have to check
the website to see of ot os a free upgrade for registered users...

Hi John,

At which hotel will you be staying? Perhaps I could catch a ride with
you after the concert and stay one night in my own room. That will save
Mike and you from an early rise on Sunday and I can catch a hotel
shuttle to the airport. I can help out with gas for the rides on
Tuesday and Saturday and throughout the week.

Cheers,

Bill

Okay, first off, you don't have to worry about either of these
items... definitely not number 1 and probably not number 2.

Now that that's settled, some edumacation:

1. Universal Binaries

A Universal Binary is a build of a program that features code
optimized for both IBM/Motorola PowerPC ("PPC") processors like the
G3, G4 and G5, and for Intel processors like the Core Solo, Core Duo,
Core 2 Duo, and Xeon. That lets buyers of new Macs migrate their
software onto the newer machines in an optimal fashion. It is not
intended for Windows use, only to cover Macs with both types of CPU
architectures, so you'll see the phrase "Now available for Windows
and Universal for Mac" in marketing literature, along with a
teal/aqua yin/yang symbol, the Universal logo.

Most non-realtime software for the PPC machines runs just fine on
Intels, using an invisible software translation layer called Rosetta,
but Rosetta slows things down too much for music or video software to
work reliably, so an Intel Mac can't really use PPC music software.
You may have seen some of this in the discussions of last year's
Different Skies show prep; folks were interested in using Intel Macs
because they're so much faster than the PPC models, but if the
particular programs they wanted to use weren't Universal yet, they
were stuck. In Otso's case, for example, he was so frustrated by
waiting for his main programs to come out for his new Intel laptop,
he just ran Boot Camp on it, booted it up into Windows XP, and
installed and ran the Windows versions of everything.

Some companies (Apple, of course, and Ableton and MOTU) made the jump
very quickly and without incident; others, like Native Instruments
and GForce, have had a very hard time doing the recoding. It was
particularly tough for M-Tron, because it's a very old and mature
code base written with a development environment that isn't
Intel-friendly (there were two main development platforms for Mac OS
X code for the PPC.. one, XCode, was the one Apple supported for the
switchover to Intel, and the other, CodeWarrior, was the one largely
used and preferred by the music software companies, that became
orphaned when the switch was made).

The GForce people announced Universal Binaries were on the way for
all their products over a year ago, and only now have they shipped
M-Tron, with Oddity, ImpOSCar, and Minimonsta to follow in the next
few weeks. Not in time for our show, probably, but if I have M-Tron
I'll be happy. One of these days I'll sit down with my friend Chris
from GForce over a beer and get the gory details of what made the
transition so hard. It won't be publishable but I'll bet it makes a
good story.

2. M-Tron Tape Banks (voice expansion sets)

John 3 and I have the original release of M-Tron, which had a
comparatively short list of sounds available for it. The version you
bought, if you got it recently, is the one that includes all of the
three M-Tron Tape Banks (sound expansion sets) as part of the
included patches. You can check this easily by seeing how large the
sound folder is and looking at the install media: if it's 600 MB,
installed from a CD-ROM, you have the old version without the extra
sound sets, and if it's around 2 GB, installed from a DVD, you have
the complete version with the three extra sets included.

I am not sure what the policy is for people with the old version
getting the replacement sounds; the current version is so inexpensive
that it may be that GForce simply recommends buying another copy, as
that'd be as cheap as any single Tape Bank, much less all three. In
John 3's case, he and I have spoken to GForce and gotten special
dispensation from GForce for me to give him the one Tape Bank he's
missing from his collection, because he's a software reviewer working
for our magazine (he did our review of their Minimonsta program,
which they really liked).

I try not to talk about this stuff in public forums, because people
don't see the backstory and think I advocate trading or stealing
software, which I don't. Magazine editors and other reviewers live in
a world unlike the one occupied by most music software buyers; the
rules are different, and there's an understanding of that between the
manufacturers and the editors, but it can seem strange, unfair, or
even illegal to outsiders. That's why I almost never discuss software
reviews on forums like SynthSights, even after they're in print.

Hope that answers your questions.

Bill,

I'm staying at the Embassy Suites at the airport (well 5.5 miles).
It's about $145/night w tax. It is a 2 room suite with a pull out
bed in the living room. You are welcome to stay there and maybe
defray some of the cost. I'm sure there is a shuttle to the
airport but we'd have to figure a way to get your equipment into
the room and then out to the shuttle without getting hit for an
additional non-government guest.

Bill,

I sent you another email to your personal address Monday sometime
around midday and I assume from your non response or comment that
it probably has been treated as spam.

Please excuse the crossposting; I'd like to spread the word about the
latest mindSpiral doings.

First off, after nearly a year of gathering dust, the mindSpiral
website has undergone a complete facelift, with links to albums,
downloadable audio samples (including the first tastes of last year's
show for those who weren't there... album still to come!),
embarrassing photos (more to come), and a lot of verbiage trying to
make sense of what is, ultimately, sheer insanity. Where else will
you find The Wheel Of Stars, Bluebells on Saturn, Bigfoot, The
Screaming Reds, and Purple Fuzzy Monkeys Taking Over The Moon?

Please skish over to http://www.mindspiral.com and check it out for yourself.

Also: on Saturday night, April 7, 2007, at 8 PM, the Fiske
Planetarium in Boulder, Colorado, will host mind3Spiral. This year's
incarnation is a trio: myself, John 3 Rossi, and Bill Fox. We will
play our music with the accompaniment of a live sky show and laser
display, and we hope you'll stop by if you're in the area and check
us out. Tickets are $10, parking is free.

Thanks for listening.
