Hi Bernie,

Naw, I have "just" #805. Merbler has the behemoth.

You can check with Martin (tronbros@...) for the cost and
availability of a restored Mark II beastie from those guys in the
UK. You're into the 5 figures, though, for that type of unit---not
to mention the additional shipping/duties charges and the cost of
three guys and a lorry to help you get it home. Don't say I didn't
warn you. :-)

Is it worth it? Well, put it this way: I think the hair on the back
of my neck is *still* standing since Ken and I fired up his Mark II
the first time and played 3-violins through the Mark II's amps and
ancient Wharfedales. Holy crap!

But, of course, Merbler insists on going through line outs and direct
boxes to record his machine---pleh. I'm anxious to get over there
with some mics and do it the right way. ;-)

Hi Ken and Ken,

Are both of you gentlemen owners of MK II's? What should one expect
to pay for one that's in decent condition?

Just fired up the MKII, have screwdriver in hand to take care of the horrendous wobblies that have attacked my RH keyboard.  Already exorcised the other gremlins (motor noise, hum) with direct boxes, balanced cables and an AC line conditioner.   Hope I can get rid of these wobblies.  Before I can get "that sound" I need to take care of *this sound*.

Hi everyone!

Just thought you'd like to see this and maybe get
involved! I'm thinking of going, if just to hang out
with everyone. May bring 805, not sure---we shall see.

Sounds like a good opportunity to meet our 'tron friends from
across the pond: John Bradley and Martin Smith will be
flying over to Toronto to meet up with fellow 'troniacs,
run some clinics, make some repairs/adjustments on your machine
if you bring it, and so on!

Please respond to Rick Blechta directly if you think you'd
be interested.

Later, 'tronigators!

Hi Moneypitters,

Ken M. here. Just wanted to let the local tron lovers know that one of
our own moneypit members will be playing in downtown Boston this Friday
night. Michael Oliver, and his band Go, Dog, Go from Buffalo, NY will be
playing at Copperfield's Down Under on Brookline Ave. (across from Fenway
Park) this Friday night at 11:00 PM. He'll be in town to play as part of the
NEMO event this week. Michael played my mellotron and also Ken L.'s on his
new album, "Pop and Circumstances". I don't think he'll have a tron with
him, but he's got a great band even without a mellotron.

If anyone's interested in going, let me know. There's going to be a Red
Sox game at 6:05 PM across the street, so it could be an interesting evening.

I set up another e-group: NEEM - Northeast Electronic Music

If you're a fan of Classic/Progressive EM (see http://www.goldtri.org),
I've established the e-group to try to get us in the northeast chatting.
There's discussion about an EM Festival here in Boston, and some folks
out here may want to be in on it (either helping out or attending).
If it happens in this area, Mellotron #805 will likely make an
appearance. :-)

Hey Ken,

I've been lurking on the Mellotron site for quite some time.

- I live in Chatt.TN at the moment.
- I lived in Boston for 20 years.
- Most of my friends still live in the Boston area.
- I plan on moving back. Hope to visit soon.
- I've played Mellotron in a few bands in the 70's.
- I toured the world for 15 years as a Keyboard Tech with many bands.
- I'm attempting a "Mellotron Intervention" with a friend of mine here in TN.
(similar to what you were discussing about the guy in Leominster.)

But.... I do not presently own one of the buggers...

Anyway... Thanks for creating this site, and I'll be telling everyone I know in
your area of the availablity of Mellotrons, in good working order, with plenty
of sounds to choose from.

Cheers,

Kevin Foley

That's the problem. I can almost guarantee that if what my boss
says is correct, there'll be an SMS controller and probably new
tapes in that beastie's future, plus the rest of it will be in
"unknown" condition at best. At any rate, it doesn't look like
we'll be able to spring this one from this guy at any time soon...

Found another M400 in Leominster, MA---a friend of my boss.

He's got an M400 collecting dust and is "thinking about"
getting it back in some kind of shape. My boss said that he's
not looking to sell it (although seemed to start considering some
outrageous drunken offers my boss was tossing his way)---and
apparently he's not looking to do much with it either.

Oh well. Doubt if we'll see him here in MONEYPIT unless
he decides to show his M400 the kind of respect it deserves.

Say, what about a MONEYPIT intervention, ya know, where you
corner a Mellotron do-nothing owner and make him see the errors
of his ways? :-)

I'll keep pinging my boss on this one.

Hi Moneypitters,

Ken M. here. I guess I'm talking to Ken L., Ray, and whoever else we
have on this list.

I'll give anybody out there a brief update on what I've been up to, since
I don't talk much on the other list. I've got 2 M400's, an original machine
(#1217) I found in a recording studio in Nashville, and a Streetly rebuild
(#1001). I've been tronning for about a year now. These guys need constant
attention. I just finished tuning up #1217 to the point where I felt
comfortable putting the top back on. Now I need to do some serious screw -
turning on #1001 - yes folks, even an 8 month old restored machine needs to be
tuned and played to keep it sounding right.

I've spent much of the last few months setting up my PC based recording
studio (featuring the trons), and getting a small midi setup running. I'm
recording using CUBASE VST and have also recently purchased a digital
recorder from Roland which uses the USB port of my PC - very handy. This
includes some nice digital guitar effects which are an added bonus. I'm
learning quite a bit these days about how to put all of this stuff together.

I am still basking in the afterglow of Michael Oliver's recent release,
which features the trons of Ken Leonard and myself. Even though I now believe
that my tron didn't make it on to the album, I WAS there when Ken Leonard's
was played so nicely by Mr. Oliver, and it was an experience I'll never
forget. Ken - next time we record at my house FIRST!!! Ken and I would like
to do more of this in the future. BTW, Michael Oliver is a member of
MONEYPIT, so I hope he joins our list when he gets his computer problems
straightened out.

One other thing. I just purchased one of these RIO players which allow
you to download tunes in MP3 from your PC and listen to them wherever you go.
These are very handy to have for many reasons (like listening to Ken L's
latest which I just downloaded), and I won't go into all of the features now,
but you guys should check them out.

I'll go back to lurking now, but I should have some interesting things to
report in the comings months. I'll talk to you soon.

Ken M.

Great. I don't think there'll be much traffic out here. Not
even sure who's out here yet. Might be just you, me, and Ken for
right now.

Yeah, folks, check out the Vocalion. Ray has that in his bedroom.
The Vocalion is in a room with a cathedral ceiling for a reason...

Would be nice to see you back doing things, Ray, even as a
once-in-a-while endeavor like I seem to be into lately.

>So, how bout a members list so's we know's who's out there (besides Ken and
>we all know he's Out There)

I don't tend to hide very well, Ray, and, yes, I'm definitely
"out there..." :-)

Speaking of which...

If anyone would like to check out my latest tune, there's an MP3
at http://www.ultranet.com/~kleonard/arpeg1.htm --- but it's not
Arpeg1, it's really "NdsEdit.mp3", so please save the file
as such. Yes, "Needs Edit," because it's 13+ minutes long. :-)
About 6MB of download if your stomach/modem can handle it. I will
probably create some streaming RealAudio out of it at some point and put
it "officially" on my songs page, so you needn't download this
one unless you're into MP3s.

Despite the obvious boo-boos (it's me playing four keyboards at once
with one take, so, well, that 'tron choir tape running out is acceptable
as far as I'm concerned), I think this one kinda kicks booty. Same style
as the others---sequencer layered with a constant chord. The 'tron
does some improv (including some reeds, Ray---the "Woodwinds II"
sound from DK), and the Minimoog sounds like something out of
a very bad 50's movie and gets raunchy now and then.

Thanks for the good word Ken (hi ya'll). I have been thinking alot about
things tron and music lately. Lo and behold I get this invite! I'll
probably do lots of lurking, and pipe up now and then when I feel inclined.
I still play just about weekly at the church I go to. I have not been doing
any recording or special projects lately but am getting real itchy. I
started buying some *different* harmonicas on Ebay (chordmonica, 14-inch
chromatic bass, etc). Hope to do some recording blending tron and reeds,
including the vocalion(my biggest *harmonica* see
http://www.usd.edu/smm/graese6.html if you want to see a pic.

So, how bout a members list so's we know's who's out there (besides Ken and
we all know he's Out There)

later

Why, yes. Yes I did. :-)

Ray! It's wonderful to hear from you and have you out
here!

Folks: Ray C. was on the 'tronists list for a while, but
he's an extremely busy guy with a rather large family
(six kids and a Vocalian, right? :-) ), and he had to
take a time-out to focus on things non-'tronic for a while,
and rightly so. Uh ohhh---he's baaa-aaaaaack. :-)

Ray was very kind to send me a cassette with some
interesting organ music *and* some of his own tunes,
which are, well...ummmm..."impressive" is a good word.
I hope this means you're also getting time to do some
more recording, Ray.

Yeah, let us know when you'll be around, and we'll see how many
MONEPIT folks we can get together while you're here.

Hey! Michael Oliver is from that area, too! That's where he
recorded his latest album.

Hmmmm...Well, let's see...Knows about 'trons, used to live 'round
here, plays 'em...

Well, since you put it *that* way, Frank, I don't see any problem with
this. :-)

The list is open---if you'd like to hop on, just send e-mail
to moneypit-subscribe@egroups.com. It will be *great* having your
technical and playing expertise here.

Hi, Ken.

Checked out the moneypit page. Although I currently live in San Diego, I'm
originally from MA (Cape Ann -- Gloucester/Rockport/Pigeon Cove). Do I
qualify?
Also, as you have probably gathered from the melloronists list, I am not YET a
Tron owner, although knowledgible about them and have used them in performance
and studio work. Again, do I qualify?
Don't be afraid to tell me if my "membership" mucks up the works for all the
NE locals. And yes, THEY WERE MEANT TO BE PLAYED, not be museum pieces.

** MELLOTRON OWNERS OF NEW ENGLAND **

MONEYPIT - Mellotron Owners Needing Excessive Yen for Purchases for their 'Trons

...a New England-based Mellotron Owners' E-Group...

Wow! It turns out that there are several Mellotron owners in and around the New
England,USA area. So why not create an e-group to keep in touch!

If you are a recording artist and wish to use the genuine article, just send
e-mail to moneypit@egroups.com. We have a variety of units (mostly Mellotron
M400s) and sounds available---flutes, cellos, 3-violins, MK II brass, vibes,
choir, church organ, and more!

We do our best to maintain our machines in top condition, but, well, they *are*
Mellotrons and do indeed have their own unique quirks...Hints, secrets,
experiences, playing hints, whatever are all welcome here on the e-group, all in
an effort to *keep* our machines in A1 condition and get the most use out of
them we can. THEY ARE MADE TO BE PLAYED, FOLKS.

Also see the "Mellotronists" e-mail list. Subscribe by sending e-mail to
mellotronists-request@... with the text "subscribe" in the
subject/body of the e-mail.
