reader-friendly with hand held devices - now you can take us with you.

We're starting a new feature on the site - all you need to do is send us a photo
of the Kweevak website onscreen (on a PC or portable device) and let us know
where you took the shot... (background shots would be cool too - say The
Pyramids of Eiffel Tower, for example) - any page is good - start your search

If we choose your photo to feature, and you want us to, we'll link the photo

When it comes to covers of "Million Miles Away," my favorite cover ever is the
recent version by the Memphis based band called Ingram Hill, Hollywood Records.
I've always enjoyed Steve Wynn's performance of it, and there was a band... out
of the UK, 1010, who did a version in the 80s that I've enjoyed, but these kids
from Tennessee have made a record that for me compete with the original version
by Peter and the guys. Now that is blasphemous I agree, but their version moves
me. And I said compete. It is hard to be the 'Souls.
Nuff said?
Visit the link, and have a listen.

JULY 27, 2009
MiSSiNG iN ACTiON
JOEY ALKES AND CHRiS FRADKiN
TALK TO ROCKWiRED
ABOUT THEiR YEARS AS A SONGWRiTiNG DUO
THE ONCE ViBRANT L.A. MUSiC SCENE
AND RE-ViTALiZiNG THEiR CATALOG

iNTERViEWED BY BRiAN LUSH
In the early eighties, the teaming of songwriters JOEY ALKES and CHRIS FRADKIN
wrote some of the most influential New Wave tunes for the likes of THE PLIMSOULS
(A MILLION MILES AWAY, NOW, HYPNOTIZED.˜HUSH, HUSH and ˜LOST TIME) and PHIL
SEYMOUR'S TALK TO ME. Twenty-five years following their last collaboration,
ALKES and his label SQUID MUSIC have come across the demo recordings of the
ALKES/FRADKIN catalog and have found that the quarter century-old recordings
require very little dusting. They will soon be seeing the light of day in an
official release entitled SOME SONGS - RESCUED FROM THE EIGHTIES - TUNES WRITTEN
AND RECORDED BETWEEN 1980 - 1983. " I'm excited! It is definitely valid stuff!"
says ALKES when asked about the looming release. "There is definitely an album
here and it's good power pop. As good as there has ever been and the reaction
we've getting on MYSPACE has been great." In listening to an advanced copy of
˜SOME SONGS. I must concur
with the popular consensus of the songwriting duo's new found following on the
internet but this collection of demos (and I stress demos!) shows the groundwork
for all that was (TALK TO ME was covered by PHIL SEYMOUR) and all that could've
been (MISSING IN ACTION sounds like it could've been a natural selection for TOM
PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS while GIRLS IN THIS TOWN sounds like PAT DINIZIO at
his moodiest). Despite the rough quality of these demos, SOME SONGS is an
intriguing listen a documentation of a then-thriving L.A. music scene and dare I
say a piece of music history worthy of rediscovery.   (READ MORE)

RENOWNED ‘80’s-ERA
SONGWRITING DUO JOEY ALKES & CHRIS FRADKIN CO-AUTHORS OF
THE PLIMSOULS'  "Million Miles Away" TO RELEASE “SOME SONGS”
( Hollywood , Calif ) - Influential power-pop songwriting team Joey Alkes and
Chris Fradkin , co-authors of the famed rock anthem “Million Miles Away,”
among other memorable Plimsoul power-pop tunes with Peter Case (“Now,”
“Hypnotized,” “Hush, Hush,” “Lost Time”), are releasing “SOME
SONGS,” a CD of their own previously unreleased recordings from that magical
musical period (1980-1983).  Just last year (2008) “Million Miles Away” was
re-recorded and released by Hollywood Records’ alternative rock act Ingram
Hill, and the Goo Goo Dolls re-released their version of the Plimsouls classic,
recorded early in the Goo’s career, on a CD/DVD box set with music video DVD,
called Goo Goo Dolls: Vol. 2. In addition, the cult hit film Valley Girl, which
featured the Plimsouls’ live performance of “Million Miles Away,” is
presently in production by MGM for a theatrical musical, and possibly a film
remake.
In 2006, Alkes’ own avant-garde music act DJ Monkey, with Mick Mcmains (Earl
Slick's NYC, John Wicks’ The Records) and rapper Jamal "TipToe" Cryer (Bad
Azz's "Word on the Street") recorded and released an award winning
(Rockwired.com “Song of the Year 2006”) version of an ‘80s tune of theirs
called “Hard Times In NYC”.  Phil Seymour, The Flamin' Groovies, Kids
Incorporated (with both Martika and Fergie), Paul Collins & The Beat, Alexis
Korner, Wait For Nothing, Jamie James, DangerFace, TenTen, Space Shot Orchestra
and Billie Jo Burnor are among the many other acts that have recorded
Alkes-Fradkin tunes in the past.
In those years Chris Fradkin was the vocalist for these Alkes-Fradkin tunes.
These recordings, on the upcoming CD to be released later this year, were meant
as demos to be presented for recording to the group of acts that recorded their
material in those years. They were recorded in many different situations and
circumstances; the telling of which can be as compelling as the songs
themselves. It was a zany but magical time.  Alkes, who makes his living as a
journalist and freelance writer, has also worked in most every area of the music
industry (See AMG.com for his history and discography); and, as noted above,
created the internationally-respected crossover alternative/rap act on Squid
Music called DJ Monkey. Fradkin is a multiple Emmy nominee and two-time winner
in sound effects editing for his work on the X-Files. He is the father and
producer of the renowned child prodigy pianist Ragtime Ruby, and is currently in
the midst of attaining a doctorate
in psychology from Cal State in Merced .

Dj monkey update from - airborne monkey records/Squid Music - AND! Upcoming
release of SOME SONGS - alkes-fradkin (1980-1983).
********************************
Hi everybody, a bit of news. I have put up a new dj monkey site on myspace
called
www.myspace.com/djmonkeymuzik  Truth is I have had it since late 2007, but just
began setting it up and utilizing it 6 or 7 weeks ago. The experience has been
eye-opening.

Of course there is much of what you have heard or known or seen about us in the
past, but there is a host of new photos and reawakened visions of old shots, and
of course the music. Ah the poetry and the music. BUT, soon there will be some
more startling dj monkey news worth tuning in for.

Most amazing and gratifying, though, has been in the COMMENT section on the
djmonkeymuzik profile page. It’s amazing what a great outpouring of
appreciation we have received, amongst the usual advertisements in that section,
expressing appreciation and excitement about us. Too Little, Too Late?

Okay, so none of the above, though, is why I am e-mailing you. The real reason
is that I, who co-wrote the Plimsouls/GooGoo Dolls/Ingram Hill song “Million
Miles Away” with Chris Fradkin and Peter Case, and heard in the movies as
Valley Girl and Speed, will be releasing a cd to be titled……
alkes-fradkin/some songs (1980-1983) this Fall.  It is essentially what you
will find on our recently developed www.myspace.com/alkesfradkin, but of course
a bit more and re-mastered etc.
Thanks,
Joey

P.S. You do not have to be a member of myspace to fully view the above myspace
links!!

SHOCKPOP RADIO http://scrubradio.com/ WILL BE THE FIRST TO BE PLAYING SOME

As a journalist who has worked with many up-and-coming bands and artists over
the years, I put together a short list of tips for those artists who handle
their own promotion:

A professional presentation will help get you noticed. A poor one will almost
guarantee you will be ignored.

'Article for the short film "God is an Under Achiever" DJ MONKEY song /video by
Dennis Schraub and Joey Alkes'

"Schraub and Alkes created two edits of the short film and choosing between them
would be as unwelcome a task as choosing between Coltrane’s two edits of
“Ascension”.  The comparison is apt.  ”God is an Underachiever” is as
difficult, moving and inspiring in it’s right as the much written about late
Coltrane."  - Al Eaker, in Fringe Cinema 4/2009
