Since I am teaching piano out of my home, I have the piano tuned 2x yearly.
HOWEVER....when I was not teaching but still playing for my own enjoyment, I
am ashamed to admit that the piano hadn't been tuned in over 5 years but to
my ear still sounded decent. I know it wasn't a perfect pitch, but the keys
were all basically in tune to each other and none of the keys were horribly
out of tune. I think it is a personal preference....the only time you KNOW
it needs tuning is if you have perfect pitch or if one or more of the keys
is out of tune enough that your ear can detect it. My piano always sounds
"brighter" after it is tuned but I don't recognize a drastic difference in
the sound.
I do feel I owe it to my students to have a piano that is in great tune and
great repair for lessons, so I am more diligent when I am teaching.
Good luck in your purchase!
