Hey there, Listener!  We don't want to waste any time so here are the bullet points for those of you who are wondering if you want to read this email.  Details follow below...

  • The royalty battle continues. Thanks for your support so far.
  • We've upgraded the website (www.musicaljustice.com) to include the latest music news, videos, tour information and MP3 downloads... updated daily!
  • Musical Justice is available on iTunes Radio and through corporate firewalls
  • We're playing more new music than ever from sources ranging from MP3 blogs to the BBC and we're adding tracks and updating our playlists daily.

Still there?  Good...

2007 was a rough year with all the talk of dramatically increased royalties for internet radio. For awhile, we thought we might have to shut things down.  However, thanks to listener outrage, internet radio was granted a temporary reprieve and we'd like to thanks everyone who contacted a senator or congressperson in our behalf.  But the reprieve is not complete as we're still required to pay significantly higher royalties than satellite, cable or terrestrial radio stations, so stay tuned because we expect this issue to surface again shortly.

In spite of the down year in '07, we expect 2008 to be our biggest year yet.  Some of you may have noticed that we recently redesigned and relaunched the website.   Now you can get your daily updates on the latest artist news, music videos, tour dates and MP3 downloads @ www.musicaljustice.com.  We scan 100's of music websites and filter out all the irrelevant stuff and focus on just the artists that you'll hear on our playlists, so it's a great place to keep tabs on the bands that matter.

We've also got great news for those of you who have always wanted to listen at work but couldn't get to Musical Justice through your company's firewall.  Our partner, Live365, has fixed this problem so that you can take us to work with you all day long.  Don't forget that we're also on iTunes Radio if you'd prefer to listen to us that way.

If you haven't listened for awhile and you're wondering if it would be worth the time to check in, we're playing an even better mix of the latest indie rock and established alternative artists.   Take a look at some of the artists currently in heavy rotation and judge for yourself...  Radiohead, Bishop Allen, Death Cab For Cutie, The Go! Team, Interpol, The Hives, Spoon, Band of Horses, M.I.A., Iron & Wine, Okkervil River, Foo Fighters, The National, The White Stripes and Beck.  We've also recently added new tracks from new and forthcoming releases by the Drive-By Truckers, Marah, Gary Louris, and Cat Power.

Every week, we scan dozens of the most influential new music websites, playlists and magazines to figure out the best new music we can get our hands on.  Right now, there are over 400 new tracks less than 6 months old in our current rotation alone.  In addition to all that new music, we're cutting a new playlist every day... no shuffle plays, no shortcuts... it's always as fresh and high quality as possible.

A lot of alternative stations that play new music, frankly, turn their mix into an indie rock ghetto where everything is so new and hip that there's no room for your favorite older bands.  Honestly, it kinda wears me out to listen to that for very long.  Our belief is that just because you want to hear the best new music doesn't mean that you've turned your back on more successful and established artists.  Our goal has always been to give you the best possible blend of those two worlds.  As we celebrate MJ's 8th anniversary this week, I'm confident that the blend of music we play has never been more diverse or better.

So we hope you'll check us out, give the new website a look and e-mail us back with your thoughts and comments about how we can make Musical Justice even better for you in 2008.

Thanks again for listening!

Thanks again to everyone for all the positive comments about the new website & blog.  If you haven't been out to the blog this week, you've missed out on headlines like "Noel Gallagher – Jealous or Just a Dick?" and links to over 150 MP3s by Musical Justice artists like the White Stripes, Death Cab for Cutie and Radiohead.

Congrats to our winners from last week's bulletin board contest.  We're doubling up the prizes so that we'll have 2 winners of "This Bird Has Flown: A 40th Anniversary Tribute to the Beatles' Rubber Soul" instead of just one.   Also congrats to all those who went out to the Musical Justice website and found the "Contest" button.  Initially, we planned to just give out 25 mix CDs, but the response was so good that everyone who clicked the button and emailed us before the deadline will get a CD!  In case you're curious, here's the track listing for the limited edition mix:

  • The Hustle – Marah
  • Juicebox – The Strokes
  • All the Money or The Simple Life Honey - The Dandy Warhols
  • I Predict A Riot – Kaiser Chiefs
  • Permanent One – Eugene Edwards
  • The Fallen – Franz Ferdinand
  • Onions – Heartless Bastards
  • Waitin' For A Superman – Iron & Wine
  • Middle of Nowhere – Hot Hot Heat
  • Collide The Tide – Chin Up Chin Up
  • Ain't No Easy Way – Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
  • Help Me Suzanne – Rhett Miller
  • Why – Gina Villalobos
  • Last Nite – The Detroit Cobras
  • Bandages & Scars – Son Volt
  • Cool Water – Laura Veirs
  • Lottery Winners on Acid – The Crimea
  • Walking With a Ghost – The White Stripes
  • Halloween – Matt Pond PA
  • No Surprises (live acoustic) – Radiohead

This week's contest is for the latest Nirvana offering, "Sliver – The Best of The Box" which features rare mixes, demos and live versions of classic Nirvana songs including Smells Like Teen Spirit, All Apologies & Come As You Are.  Again, all you've got to do to be entered in the drawing is go out to the Musical Justice bulletin board  and add your 2 cents in a posting. The contest will be open until next Friday, November 18th at Midnight EST.  As a bonus, you'll also be entered in our drawing for a $50 Amazon gift certificate which also ends at the same time.  The more you post, the more entries you get in the drawing.

Good luck everyone!

Jeff

Hey everyone!

It's been a little more than a year since we announced the last big change at Musical Justice when we moved to CD quality sound.  Back then, we celebrated the new station launch the same day as our beloved Philly gents, Marah , released their "20,000 Streets Under The Sky" CD.

Well, today those same Bielanko brothers (with the rest of the band in tow) have released not one, but TWO new CDs... "If You Didn't Laugh, You'd Cry" and their first Christmas CD, "A Christmas Kind of Town".  Obviously, we knew we had to step it up if we were going to keep pace with our East Coast brothers here at Musical Justice.

So today, we're announcing the launch of MusicalJustice.com , a new website which we think will significantly improve your enjoyment of the Musical Justice webcast.  The website includes a new MJ Blog  which highlights the latest news on Musical Justice artists and LOTS of links to downloadable music - for example, today's entry featured some great live Ryan Adams and Jeff Tweedy tracks!

You'll also find playlists and listener charts , as well as the new Musical Justice store .  We think you'll really dig our "Authentic Rock Snob" line of shirts and merchandise, so take a look!

To celebrate the launch of the website, we're giving away free limited edition mix CDs featuring some of the newer artists and rare tracks we play on the air.  We'll give the CDs away to (at least) the first 25 people to find and click on the CONTEST button on the website and send us an e-mail including name and address.  To find the CONTEST button, go to the website, click on the "$$$" option and scroll to the bottom of the page.

In addition to the free mix CD giveaway, we're also going to have a contest over the next 30 days and the winner will receive a $50 Amazon.com gift certificate.  To enter, all you have to do is post messages on the new MJ Bulletin Board .  Every time you post, you get another entry in the drawing.  Ten posts = ten entries!  We've got a few conversation starters out there already like "Best Rock Movie Ever?" or "Least Favorite Song You've Heard on Musical Justice", but don't let those topics limit you!  We'll announce the first winner after November 18th.

We hope you enjoy the changes and we welcome your feedback.  Drop us a note... or better yet, post it on our bulletin board and get an entry in the contest!

Thanks for listening,

Jeff

Hey everyone!

First a quick programming announcement... We know that a lot of
Musical Justice listeners tune in while they're at work, so we've
decided to try something new for those folks. We've expanded our
active playlists to 1000 songs and 60+ hours which means that
whenever your listening at work during the week, you aren't going to
hear the same song twice Monday thru Friday, no matter what shift you
work or where you are around the world. Put it this way, if you
happen to hear a duplicate during your workday, you're working way
too many hours and your boss needs to give you a raise! Please check
it out and let us know what you think about the change...

Now that the business is out of the way, on to the fun stuff, because
it's our favorite time of year here at Musical Justice. That's
right, it's off to Austin, Texas later this week to attend the South
By Southwest music festival. If previous years are any indication,
we'll come home with stacks of new music to play for you on MJ. For
those of you who have never been, picture over a 1000 bands spread
over 50+ venues performing from noon until 2 AM for four straight
days. Oh, and did I mention lots of beer and BBQ? :)

Some of the Musical Justice artists who are playing the festival are
Aimee Mann, Blue Merle, Bobby Bare Jr., Bottle Rockets, Buddy Miller,
Caitlin Cary, David Garza, Dogs Die In Hot Cars, Earlimart, Elvis
Costello and the Imposters, Hot Hot Heat, Jeff Klein, John Doe,
Kathleen Edwards, Los Super Seven, Lucero, Ray LaMontagne, Robbie
Fulks, Robert Earl Keen, Robert Randolph, Sleater-Kinney, Son Volt,
Stephen Malkmus, Tegan & Sara, The Donnas, The Forty-Fives, The
Futureheads, The Golden Republic, The High Dials, The Paybacks, The
Raveonettes, The Waco Brothers, The Wallflowers, Tift Merritt, Tim
Easton and Vic Chesnutt. But the most anticipated performance might
just be a rare appearance from the recovering Alejandro Escovedo at
Town Lake on Friday night. Expect to see pictures posted out at the
Musical Justice Yahoo Groups site afterwards. If you're going to be
down in Austin and you want to catch up with the rest of the Musical
Justice group, send me an email at musicaljustice4u at aol.com...

Oh, and one more thing while I'm thinking about it. You know
those "thumbs up/thumbs down" buttons in the Live 365 player window.
That provides us with extremely valuable information about what you
like to listen to on our station and we use it extensively in our
programming decisions. So if you really like something you hear and
want us to keep playing it (as well as other songs like it), then
give it a thumbs up and that'll definitely help keep it on the
playlist. In case you're curious, here is the current top 20 based
upon listener feedback:

# Artist - Song
1 William Shatner - Common People
2 Johnny Cash - Hurt
3 Butterfly Boucher - I Cant Make Me
4 Anne McCue - Stupid
5 Gina Villalobos - Why
6 Jim White - Static On The Radio
7 Social Distortion - Winners And Losers
8 U2 - Vertigo
9 The Hives - Two-Timing Touch and Broken Bones
10 Stephen Malkmus - Craw Song
11 Hamell on Trial - Halfway
12 Elliott Smith - A Fond Farewell
13 Jay Farrar - Windfall
14 Tommy Stinson - Not A Moment Too Soon
15 Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
16 The Out Crowd - Good Morning
17 Snow Patrol - Spitting Games
18 The Forty-Fives - C'mon Now Love Me
19 Matthew Ryan - Fathers & Compromise (Live)
20 The Futureheads - Decent Days and Nights

I feel a little like Casey Kasem here, but I'd be remiss if I didn't
point out that Shatner's been at the top of the MJ listener charts
for the past 3 weeks, making Common People on of the most popular
songs on MJ over the past year! Who'd have guessed??

Time to wrap up for now. As always, we appreciate your continued
feedback and listener support, especially those of you who help
support the station financially by becoming a preferred Live365
member. Musical Justice continues to just be an expensive hobby at
this point, but every new preferred listener gets us closer to our
goal to break even someday. So thanks again to those of you who
already are VIPs. For those that aren't, we still love you
too 'cause you listen to the ads that help Live365 keep overall costs
down. In the future if you'd like to support Musical Justice more
directly by becoming a VIP listener, that's a bonus for us...

Thanks again for everything!
Jeff

Hey gang,

Just a quick note to thank all of our regular listeners. Today,
Musical Justice passed a major milestone on Live365 by cracking
10,000 Total Listener Hours (TLH) over the past 30 days. That's an
all-time high for the station and it's especially gratifying when you
consider that MJ was averaging right around 4,000 TLH a month back in
June before we upgraded our sound to CD quality. Thanks to everyone
for the great word-of-mouth you've given us and all the kind e-mails
we've received. We love your feedback... it has a lot to do with the
improvements we've been making, so please keep letting us know what
you think!

Thanks again for your support.

Hey Everyone!

Five years ago today, Musical Justice was born when Elvis
Costello's "Welcome to the Working Week" kicked off the station.
Today we're celebrating our 5th anniversary with the first of several
announcements... a new Musical Justice station, Musical Justice HOF,
was launched last night at Midnight EST, again to Elvis' "Welcome to
the Working Week".

So what is Musical Justice HOF? Well, as a loyal Musical Justice
listener, you know that our original station focuses on playing the
best from new and independent artists... the bands that are under the
radar of commercial radio. But there's a lot of other great music
out there. Musical Justice HOF's playlist is a musical history
lesson focusing exclusively on playing artists in the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame. That means we're probably the only station around that
plays both Elvis's - Costello and Presley... the only place you'll
hear the Clash followed by Sam Cooke. It sounds crazy, but it's all
good music, right? Somehow, it seems to work.

If you'd like to check out Musical Justice HOF, go to:
http://www.live365.com/stations/musicaljustice

And of course we're still going strong on Musical Justice
(http://www.live365.com/stations/jsc222). In fact, in the last week
we've hit a new record high number of listeners and we'd like to
thank each of you for listening. We've got some other things in the
works that we think you'll like so keep you eye open for more
announcements soon!

Thanks again,
Jeff

Lots going on at Musical Justice this week. Thanks again to all the
loyal listeners who've been checking us out lately! We're really
excited about the Alejandro Escovedo tribute, Por Vida, which hit the
stores last Tuesday. It's a great 2 CD set with liner notes from
Dave Marsh that are almost worth the price of the CD alone. The CD
includes the following tracks you'll hear on MJ...

Lucinda Williams "Pyramid of Tears"
Steve Earle & Reckless Kelly "Paradise"
Los Lonely Boys "Castanets"
Cowboy Junkies "Don't Need You"
Jayhawks "Last to Know"
Son Volt "Sometimes"

Plus... a great new track from Alejandro himself... "Break This Time"

The new Old 97's CD "Drag It Up" is out and I'm not saying we're big
fans, but we're playing 6 of the CD's 13 tracks on our current
playlist. The 97's announced some fall tour dates in support of the
new CD. Hopefully, they're playing somewhere near you!

Drive-By Truckers - The Dirty South (Aug 24)
Tift Merritt - Tambourine (Aug 24)
Kasey Chambers - Wayward Angel (already #1 in Australia for 4 weeks,
released in the U.S. on Sept 14)

New CDs in stores this week include:

Oh... and don't forget... Steve Earle's "The Revolution Starts...
Now" is looming on the horizon. I think it may become Steve's
highest charting CD yet... It's not released until August 24th, but
you can hear a live version of his new classic "Rich Man's War" on MJ
today!

Thanks again for listening!!

Until next time,

Well, the new, improved Musical Justice has been on the air for
almost 3 weeks. Thanks to everyone for the kind words and rave
reviews!

If you haven't had a chance to listen, I want to give you 3 good
reasons to go and check it out... songs you aren't going to hear many
other places for awhile!

1. I've got a live version of a new song from the upcoming Steve
Earle CD, The Revolution Starts... Now, due to be released on August
24th. The song is "Rich Man's War" and for my money, it ranks with
Earle's best. Here's what Steve had to say about the song in the
recent issue of Ice Magazine. "Rich Man's War is a song that I'm
pretty proud of. When I play that song, the reaction of the audiences
to the first verse is pretty astounding. I'm proud of the words and I
actually think it's kind of pretty."

2. The new Old 97's CD, Drag It Up, is scheduled to be released on
July 27th but you can hear two tracks from the CD now on Musical
Justice. The songs are "New Kid" and "Won't Be Home" and both songs
are more of a return to the early Old 97's sound after the 60's pop
experimentation of Satellite Rides.

3. I'm also playing several songs from an internet-only release, Por
Vida by Alejandro Escovedo. If you didn't know it already,
Alejandro's been off the road for over a year due after being
diagnosed with Hepatitis C. You can buy the CD at
alejandroescovedo.com or make a donation to help offset his medical
expenses at alejandrofund.com. Also, don't confuse the internet-only
release, Por Vida, with the upcoming tribute CD, Por Vida: A Tribute
to the Songs of Alejandro Escovedo which hits stores on July 27th. A
little confusing, I'll admit... Anyway, we'll be adding tracks from
the tribute CD to the playlist as soon as we can get our hands on one!

Looks like August is going to be a good month for new music too,
including new Drive By Truckers and a covers CD by Los Lobos. So are
you hearing anything interesting that you think we should be
playing? Email us with your playlist ideas!

Until next time,
Jeff

Hey Gang!

Last night at Midnight CST to the sounds of The Ramones ("Do You
Remember Rock and Roll Radio") and Elvis Costello ("Radio Radio"),
Musical Justice switched over to MP3Pro CD-quality sound on our main
station at http://www.live365.com/stations/39801.

If you are a dial-up listener, we haven't left you behind. You can
now find the old lo-bandwidth Musical Justice station at a new
address, http://www.live365.com/stations/musicaljustice.

Also, it's a big day for Marah fans who listen to Musical Justice.
In honor of today's release of their new CD, "20,000 Streets Under
The Sky", we've got lots of rare live Marah as well as tracks from
the new CD. You're gonna want to make sure you check it out!

The new sound is the first of many upgrades planned this summer. Let
me know what you think!

Testing 1-2-3-4… Is there anybody out there?

We've got some catching up to do. It's been about a year
since the last official Musical Justice newsletter hit the streets.
This one comes with what I hope you'll think is exciting news.
On June 29th, Musical Justice will be launching a new station with
improved CD-quality sound for all the listeners out there with high-
speed connections. For those of you with dial-up connections, the
old low-bandwidth version will still be out there too, giving
listeners a choice that I've been debating for awhile.

You see, over the past year I was teetering on the brink of pulling
the plug on the station several times. I'd tried several things
to grow the listener base and nothing seemed to increase it, so
I'd begun to question the time and expense of it all. After
all, the whole goal was to expose as many people as possible to the
music I love and sometimes it seems like if you aren't moving
forward, you're losing ground.

But I started to get a second wind last fall, when I read a great
article in Paste Magazine on the amazingly underappreciated
Cincinnati band, Over The Rhine. In the article, Linford Detweiler
says "I want to be in a band because there are records that I
feel like I almost couldn't survive without. And you think,
`If I could do that for one other person, then this is
great.'" Hmmmmm, I thought…

Then I started to get some real momentum this spring during my annual
trip to Austin for South By Southwest. I was down there with a big
group of close friends and saw so many great acts including Richard
Buckner, Patty Griffin, and the Old 97's, but the highlight was
seeing Marah tear up the legendary Continental Club. Then as if to
prove that set wasn't a fluke, a couple weeks later they had an
even better show at the tiny Replay Lounge in Lawrence, KS. It was
the best show I've ever seen and all for a $2 cover. Are you
kidding me? Two bucks?

A few weeks later, Matthew Ryan came to Kansas City. He recognized
me immediately and asked how the station was going and we talked
music and had a few drinks after his set. I've been pretty lucky
to get a lot of quality "hangin' out" time with Matthew
and Marah lately. Their talent is obviously every time you hear
them, but what you don't get on the CD is how down-to-earth and
authentic they are. They put themselves on the line every day for
their music. Their passion and intensity for what they do
jumpstarted mine and got me excited about doing this again.

So, the new station launches on the 29th. That date was chosen
because it's also the release date for the new Marah CD,
"20,000 Streets Under The Sky". Trust me on this one, go out
and buy that CD right away! In preparation for the upgrade, I'm
in the lengthy process of rebuilding the MP3 song library from the
ground up, converting about 2000 CDs into high quality MP3Pro files.
If you are a VIP listener on Live365, you'll get CD-quality sound
after the switchover. But that's also good news for Musical
Justice AM listeners too, as I'm re-ripping those files too to
take advantage of upgraded equipment and better software.

Anyway, a little more about the new station… I felt like Musical
Justice had lost its edge over the past year by trying to mix in some
more popular music like Norah Jones or Tom Petty to bring in
listeners and get more exposure for the other acts on the playlist.
It didn't work out that way. I'm skipping that stuff as I
redo the song library and playlists so that it doesn't even get
on the air as an accident. The new Musical Justice is going to be
repositioned at the intersection of No Depression, Little
Steven's Underground Garage and my favorite college radio
station, 97-X in Oxford, Ohio. That means a lot more music from the
Pixies and the Replacements and a lot less Norah Jones and Sheryl
Crow. We're still gonna twang but I think its gonna rock a LOT
harder too. You may have already noticed some movement in that
direction. In addition, we've added about 50% more disk space to
our Live365 account which means our active playlists will be 50%
larger and have a lot more variety.

Oh and one more important piece of information… on the 29th, the
high-speed webcast will take over at the current address,
http://www.live365.com/stations/39801. That means that if you are a
low-bandwidth listener, you'll find the old station at a new
location. Its moving to
http://www.live365.com/stations/musicaljustice.

Hope you'll be listening! Let me know what you think of the
changes...

Jeff

MUSICAL JUSTICE... NEW & IMPROVED??
-------------------------------------
The big news at Musical Justice this month is that you're going to
start hearing a lot of changes on the air and we really hope you'll
like what you hear. We've gotten a lot of feedback about every
aspect of the station from all of you and starting on July 7th, we'll
be going live with a couple of the biggest. First of all, a few of
you wrote that we played the same song three or four times during the
day. Sorry about that! So starting next Monday, we'll be offering
up no repeat 9-to-5 workdays for our listeners all across Europe and
the United States. That's right, no matter if you work in Athens,
Georgia or Athens, Greece, you can click us on when you get to work
and not hear the same song twice until it's time to go home. Well,
that is unless one of you really, really asks for it. Why? Read
on...

VIGILANTE JUSTICE
------------------
That's because we're taking requests. Starting on July 7th, as part
of the new and improved Musical Justice, I'll be turning over the
station to the listeners for an hour each day. The show will be
called Vigilante Justice since the listeners will be literally taking
Musical Justice into their own hands! You can start emailing your
requests for the first show whenever you like. Send them to me at
MusicalJustice4u@.... I'll take the best requests I get each day
and those will make up the next day's show. Vigilante Justice will
be on the air every day from Noon to 1 PM Central Time.

DOWNLOADS OF THE MONTH
---------------------
The MP3's are updated out on the Musical Justice files page. As in
the past, these are all from artist websites, so I'd encourage you to
check out the individual pages too. July's MP3's are:

Hotel Yorba (live) by the White Stripes
All by Myself (Eric Carmen cover) by Ass Ponys
Questioningly (Ramones cover) by Jesse Malin
Eve of Destruction (60's hit) by Tommy Womack
Rockets by Cat Power

These files will be up for the month of July. If you know of any
artists who have posted rare tracks on their websites, send me an e-
mail. The web address for the files section is
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/musicaljustice/files/.

DON'T AVOID THIS DRAFT
-------------------------
One of the more popular songs on the Justice playlist over the last 6
months has been The Draft's Curtains Drawn on Sunny Days. I've
gotten several inquiries on how to get a copy of their CD which was a
limited pressing mostly distributed at the band's shows in the
Lawrence, Kansas area. Well, I didn't know for sure how to get them
to the people who asked, so this past month I made contact with the
band's singer, Bob Connealy, to ask him. If you'd be interested in
getting one of the few remaining copies, send us an e-mail at
MusicalJustice4u@... and I can get you in touch with the band to
get a CD for you.

STUFF YOU PROBABLY WON'T HEAR ANYWHERE ELSE
-------------------------------------------------------
Musical Justice's Hard Drive has some cool new tracks for you.
There are way too many to highlight here, but my personal favorite is
a very rare live recording pairing up Bruce Springsteen and U2 on the
old classic, Stand By Me. The interaction between Bono and Bruce is
amazing and you can hear these two great live artists pushing each
other to take it up a notch. Another great live cut you've probably
already heard is Jeff Tweedy's acoustic cover of the Beatles' I'm
Only Sleeping. Yet another great live acoustic track comes from
Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe as they perform Lowe's anthem, (What's
So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding. Keep an ear open for
these and several other great rarities!

WHAT'S GOING ON?
-----------------------------
Well, it's the Musical Justice equivalent of a slow news month.
Let's see, the Pernice Brothers and John Eddie came out this past
month. Next month promises Radiohead and Drive By Truckers. Artists
are setting up their summer tours. But all my usual sources are
pretty dry as far as anything that I'm excited to share with
everyone, so we're gonna keep this month's newsletter pretty
brief.
Next month, there will be stories to tell even if I have to make
`em
up myself. ;)

That said, one quick reminder that appeared last month too.
Midwesterners will want to check out Twangfest in St. Louis, Missouri
on June 4th-7th. Among the performers are Jason Ringenberg, Joy Lynn
White, Bobby Bare Jr., Tim Easton and Scott Miller & The
Commonwealth. For more details, go to http://www.twangfest.com/.

DOWNLOAD OF THE MONTH
---------------------
Last month, we offered up a rare Over The Rhine MP3 in the file
section on the Yahoo site. We've also added 4 other MP3 out
there
for Musical Justice users to download. For those of you who are anti-
downloading, all of them have come off artist websites, so they are
about as legal as you can get. The additional MP3's are:

Talkin' Al Kida Blues - Dan Bern (from www.danbern.com)
Crossing Muddy Waters (Live) by John Hiatt (from www.johnhiatt.com)
To Washington by John Mellencamp (from www.mellencamp.com)
Gotta Get A Message To You (yeah, the BeeGees song...live) by Jay
Bennett and Edward Burch (from www.bennett-burch.com)

These files will be up for the month of June, and then I'll be
looking to put new ones out there. If you know of any artists who
have posted rare tracks on their websites, send me an e-mail. The
web address for the files section is

MUSICAL JUSTICE TRIVIA
-----------------------
1. This band, a 2002 inductee into the Rock Hall of Fame, backed Bob
Dylan on his 1986 tour. Name them.
2. Which member of Fleetwood Mac contributed backing vocals on Tom
Petty's Hard Promises?
3. This musician has produced records for an impressive range of
artists including Elvis Costello, Counting Crows, Los Lobos, Natalie
Merchant, Roy Orbison and The Wallflowers. Who is he?
4. John Mellencamp and Rickie Lee Jones sing together on this track
from Mellencamp's 1985 album, Scarecrow. Name it.
5. Two of alt-country's most widely acclaimed and talented
artists

Gillian Welch has been announced as the opening act for several dates
during Norah Jones's summer tour. Welch's new CD, Soul
Journey, is
scheduled to drop on June 3rd. Speaking of Norah Jones, she appears

The CD is due May 20th.

The Drive By Truckers have parted company with their record company
Lost Highway, which re-released their epic Southern Rock Opera last

The Thorns, the harmonic trio made up of Matthew Sweet, Pete Droge

opening for The Jayhawks. Their self-titled CD, which was produced
by Brendan O'Brien (Dan Baird, Black Crowes, Pearl Jam), is

MAY WEEKEND SPECIALS
--------------------
Each weekend in May will highlight the music of a different artist.
You'll hear their hits and their best album tracks, as well as
rare cuts and live stuff.
May 2nd – Lucinda Williams (featuring her new CD, World Without
Tears)
May 9th – John Hiatt (featuring his new CD, Beneath This Gruff
Exterior)
May 16th – Richard Thompson (featuring his new CD, The Old Kit
Bag)
May 23rd – Pernice Brothers (featuring their new CD, Yours, Mine
and Ours)
May 30th – Buddy & Julie Miller (just because I love them!)

LISTEN TO THE BUZZ?
-------------------
They're hot. Music magazines are writing about them. They're
on TV or part of high profile tours. We get curious about all the
hype and buy the CDs. And surprise, sometimes they really are pretty
good. So you're gonna hear them now as Musical Justice's Buzz
Artists. The current Buzz list features:

* The D4 (This New Zealand garage band has played Letterman and
Carson Daly and they were a highlight of South By Southwest.)
* The Libertines (NME calls them the best band out of London since
the Sex Pistols)
*  Longwave (appearances on MTV's 120 Minutes, Conan O'Brien,
SXSW and part of the CMJ/MTV2 showcase tour)
* The Donnas (playing Lollapalooza 2003, nominated for 8 California
Music Awards).
* The Raveonettes (MTV2, SXSW and Rolling Stone says they're a
band to watch)

Check `em out and let me know what you think!

DOWNLOAD OF THE MONTH
---------------------
Since there is a place to put files on the Yahoo site, I'm going
to start putting some of the best files I find out on artist websites
for Musical Justice listeners to share. The web address for the
files section is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/musicaljustice/files/.

This month's file is a rare live performance by Cincinnati's
Over The Rhine of "Lucy and the Reverend". The soundboard
recording came from a November 2002 show in Ann Arbor, Michigan You
can find more great OTR downloads at their website,
www.overtherhine.com.

MUSICAL JUSTICE TRIVIA
-----------------------
1. This former member of the Georgia Satellites went on to produce
Ben Folds Five, Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots, Bruce
Springsteen, and Neil Young. Name him.
2. After attending the University of Georgia, this artist recorded
two commercial failures, Inside (which featured an appearance by
Aimee Mann) and Earth before striking gold with his third release, a
masterpiece of melodic pop rock. Who am I talkin' about?
3. This singer/songwriter had a modest hit, "Voices Carry",
with the band Til Tuesday before embarking on a solo career. Name
her.
4. Over the course of his 15 year musical career, this
producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist has worked with Rhett
Miller, Fiona Apple, Rufus Wainwright, Badly Drawn Boy, Melissa
Etheridge, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Grant Lee Buffalo, John Hiatt, Aimee
Mann, Tom Petty, Lisa Marie Presley and Elliott Smith. Who is this
guy?
5. Since 1974, this critically acclaimed Hoosier songwriter has
penned Top 40 hits for Three Dog Night and the Jeff Healey Band, but
he has never had a hit of his own. Who is he?

Answers to these trivia questions can be found on the main station
web page located at http://www.live365.com/stations/39801

STUFF YOU PROBABLY WON'T HEAR ANYWHERE ELSE
-------------------------------------------
Some cool rare stuff this month. A Musical Justice listener sent me
a CD by a local Sleepy Hollow, New York band called Gandalf Murphy
and the Slambovian Circus of Dreams. As he told me, they classify
their music as "punk-classical-hillbilly-Floyd". It's
pretty good stuff and I'm especially fond of a track called "Never
Fit", so you'll be hearing that one. Next, Uncut Magazine put out
two CDs of Bruce Springsteen covers including exclusive tracks from
Dan Bern, Ed Harcourt, Jesse Malin, Billy Bragg and Badly Drawn Boy.
And finally, there's a great new Waylon Jennings tribute CD,
Lonesome, On'ry and Mean, featuring Alejandro Escovedo, Robert Earl
Keen, Radney Foster, Norah Jones and others. When you hear Norah's
cover of Waylon's "Wurlitzer Prize", it'll remove any doubts you
might have about whether she's a one-hit wonder.

SXSW WRAP-UP
------------
This year's trip to Austin for South By Southwest was the best in
the 4 years I've attended. My buddy, Jason, and I saw over 30 bands
in 3 days. If you've never been before, just picture non-stop music,
barbeque and beer and you've got SXSW. Over 1000 bands play in
more than 50 venues over four nights. Here are some of the
highlights:

· The Legendary Shakeshakers raised the roof at the annual
Bloodshot Records party. Picture an X-rated revival meeting and
you'd almost have it.
· The Woggles dove into the crowd at Emo's to perform their
classic 60's rock sound and whip the crowd into a frenzy. They
even had the infamous Beatle Bob up on stage doing his Beatle Bob
thing for everyone. (Who's Beatle Bob? Check out
http://www.austinchronicle.com/issues/dispatch/2003-03-
14/music_feature23.html)
· Liz Phair debuted songs from her upcoming new CD at a
Starbucks (Yep, a Starbucks).
· Tift Merritt, John Eddie, The Jayhawks and Willie Nelson each
put on great sets during the Lost Highway label showcase. Tift
Merritt's stage presence has improved exponentially since her
performance on the same stage at SXSW two years earlier. WOW!
· Gingersol and The Silos played a "house party" for the
members of the P2 mailing list.
· Up-and-comers Kathleen Edwards and the Raveonettes each
played in-store sets inside a packed Waterloo Records (the
world's greatest record store).
· Saw (and photographed) the top of John Doe's head as I
listened to him play outside a packed Continental Club.
· Austin's SXSW ambassador, Alejandro Escovedo, played a
smokin' "greatest hits" set in front of thousands outside
at Town Lake, followed by a reunited Joe Jackson Band blasting out
his early power-pop classics like "One More Time" and "Is She
Really Going Out With Him?"

New discoveries from the trip that you'll be hearing on Musical
Justice very soon: Josh Ritter, Lucero, Thad Cockrell, The
Ravenettes, Cory Brannon, and Deena Rubinson. You can see pictures
from the trip at the photo link on the Yahoo Group page for Musical
Justice (http://photos.groups.yahoo.com/group/musicaljustice/lst).
Unfortunately, we couldn't get our camera in to some of the
bigger venues, but you'll still see some great pictures. If you'd
like to hear some of the musical highlights read on…

MARCH CONTEST
-------------
I'm putting together a "commemorative" CD for my trip to
SXSW 2003 and I thought maybe some of you would like to get a copy.
The CD will feature Liz Phair, Alejandro, the Jayhawks, Tift Merritt,
Willie Nelson, the Woggles, the Forty-Fives, the Raveonettes, Thad
Cockrell, Lucero, Josh Ritter, the D4, Kathleen Edwards, Deena
Rubinson, Gingersol and several others.

So here's the offer. I'll send a copy of the CD to the five
Musical Justice listeners who do the best job of promoting Musical
Justice to new listeners. "Best" can mean most creative, the
funniest, most effective, or reaching the biggest number of potential
listeners. All you have to do is come up with the idea and do it and
send me an e-mail about it afterwards. I'll review the ideas with a
couple of my programming assistants and we will determine the
winners. Then I'll feature the winning ideas in next month's
newsletter. Deadline for submissions is midnight EST, April 21st.
Good luck!!

PORTABLE JUSTICE - FINAL UPDATE
-------------------------
Everything should be in the mail, including the international
requests. If you don't see something by April 7th, please let me
know! Again, if anyone gets a bad one or gets one that's been
damaged in the mail, please e-mail me and I'll send you a
replacement disk right away.

MUSICAL JUSTICE TRIVIA
-----------------------
1. What singer-songwriter did Steve Earle write the song "Ft.
Worth Blues" in memory of?
2. This artist adds a guitar solo and backing vocals to
Marah's "Float Away". Name him.
3. What singer-songwriter did Lucinda Williams write the
song "Drunken Angel" in memory of?
4. This musician started his career as the keyboard player for the
Everly Brothers and went on to a long solo career as well as
recording with members of REM on Hindu Love Gods. Name him.
5. The term "No Depression" came from a gospel song covered
by Uncle Tupelo. Who was the original performer of "No Depression"?

Answers to these trivia questions can be found on the main station
web page located at http://www.live365.com/stations/39801

STUFF YOU PROBABLY WON'T HEAR ANYWHERE ELSE
-------------------------------------------
I've got a copy of Richard Thompson's cover of Joni
Mitchell's Woodstock that's on the way to the playlist this month. We
landed some advance tracks from several Yep Roc releases while we
were down in Austin. I'm also happy to have found a couple of
Bloodshot releases I've been looking for for awhile, The Bottle Let
Me Down and Making Singles, Drinking Doubles. The first of those is a
"kids" album which features Alejandro Escovedo's "The Big 1-0"
and Rex Hobart & the Misery Boys doing "It's Not Easy Being
Green". The second is Bloodshot Records' 100th release and it
stuffed to the brim with rare tracks from Ryan Adams, Neko Case, The
Sadies and others. In addition to the Bloodshot stuff, regular
listeners are likely to hear a currently unreleased track from Ryan
Adams and the Pink Hearts called "Charmed" and an acoustic version of
Coldplay's "Yellow".

PORTABLE JUSTICE - UPDATE
-------------------------
I was overwhelmed by the response for the 2002 Musical Justice
Sampler. Demand far exceeded the original run of 100 disks and
rather than turn anyone down, I made another run of unnumbered
disks. So for those of you who might still be waiting on your 2002
Sampler, I got another batch of disks in the mail today. That means
that except for a handful of international requests yet to go to the
post office, everything should be on the way to you.

I tried to spot check the disks, but if anyone gets a bad one or gets
one that's been damaged in the mail, please e-mail me and
I'll send
you a replacement disk right away.

SXSW
-----
Austin's South by Southwest, one of the highlights of my year, is
coming up in a couple weeks. One thousand bands will descend on the
city from March 12th to 16th. At last year's festival, we were
blown
away by several artists including Drive By Truckers, the Gourds, the
Yayhoos, Bare Jr. and Patty Griffin but probably the biggest moment
was finding out that Bobby Bare Jr. listened to Musical Justice!

If you've never been there, it's definitely worth making the
trip.
Check out the list of Musical Justice artists scheduled to perform
during the festival: Dan Bern, Bobby Bare Jr., Cory Brannon, Peter
Bruntnell, Calexico, Vic Chesnutt, Diana Darby, John Doe, Drive By
Truckers, Tim Easton, Kathleen Edwards, Alejandro Escovedo, Jay
Farrar, Fastball, David Garza, Gingersol, the Gourds, Ed Harcourt,
John Wesley Harding, Rex Hobart, Ray Wylie Hubbard, the Jayhawks,
Richard Julian, Matt Keating, Will Kimbrough, Chris Knight, Jimmy
LaFave, Edwin McCain, Tift Merritt, Buddy & Julie Miller, Abra Moore,
Willie Nelson, Marc Olsen, Michael Penn, Grant Lee Phillips, Bruce
Robison, Bob Schneider, Ron Sexsmith, Billy Joe Shaver, Slobberbone,
Spoon, Vienna Teng, Webb Brothers and Lucinda Williams.

For more information about the event, go to www.sxsw.com/music. If
you are planning to attend, send me an email and let me know so I can
keep an eye out for you. I'll let you know any new discoveries
next
month.

THANKS!
-----------
Over the last month, there's been a 50% increase in the number of
listeners who have ranked Musical Justice as their favorite Live365
station. That's a huge jump. I'd like to thank every one of
our
loyal listeners for their continued support! It's an easy way for
you to help us offset the cost of keeping the station up and
running. If you'd like to pick us but aren't sure how, just
go to
your Presets and select Musical Justice from the drop-down box at the
top of the page.

MUSICAL JUSTICE TRIVIA

Answers to these trivia questions can be found on the main station
web page located at http://www.live365.com/stations/39801

STUFF YOU PROBABLY WON'T HEAR ANYWHERE ELSE
-------------------------------------------
Again this month, two of the CDs you are mostly likely to hear only
on Musical Justice come from Matthew Ryan and Richard Thompson.
Matthew's released another limited-release Internet only CD,
Hopeless
to Hopeful. Last we checked, it was still available from his
website, www.matthewryanonline.com but move quickly because it was
rumored to be taken out of circulation.

We've also added an import version of Richard Thompson's The
Old Kit
Bag, which has not been released in the U.S. yet. It's another
great
effort from RT which you can order from www.amazon.com.uk, if you are
so inspired.

One other rare Richard Thompson track you'll be hearing soon on
Musical Justice is sure to cause a stir. It's a cover of
Brittany
Spears' Oops I Did It Again that he's been performing in
concert
lately. Man, you are gonna love this one!

If you saw the Grammies, one of the highlights was a tribute to the
Clash, London Calling performed by Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello,
Steve Van Zandt, and Dave Grohl. Well, we've got a copy of the
audio
and it'll be on the air soon, so keep an ear open for it.

If you have any other suggestions of cool rare performances you'd
like us to share with the other Musical Justice listeners, please
send them our way!

COMING SOON/UPCOMING RELEASES

Ben Harper – Diamonds on the Inside
March 18

The first 100 CDs are numbered and initialed by me. But the best
part of all is that they don't cost you a cent. All you've
got to do is the following:

1) Send an email with your mailing information to
musicaljustice4u@...
2) If you like the mix, promise to buy at least one CD from one of
the artists on the disk. After all, that's how they make their
money.
3) Send the web address (http://www.live365.com/stations/39801) for
Musical Justice to at least one friend with great musical taste!

That's it. I'll fill as many requests as I can afford to
fill, but the offer is limited and available on a first come, first
served basis.

RIP JOE STRUMMER
----------------
(Note: My youngest brother, Marc, wrote this when The Clash's
Joe Strummer died in late December. I don't think I've read a
better tribute anywhere by anyone else…)

Joe Strummer died.

Maybe it's weird to be upset about it, to feel a sense of loss, but I
do. Strummer was part of the music that made me who I am.

After twenty years, the Clash still has the ability to kick my ass,
to make me air guitar uncontrollably, to sing at the top of my lungs
when I am alone. At the age of 37, with a two year old son, I still
want to crank the stereo for "Clampdown".

I still remember the first time I heard "London Calling." My oldest
brother was home from his first year of college, and while he was
out, I began rifling through his records. I found one bearing a black
sticker that warned of offensive language. Of course, I had to
listen to it.

With the headphones on, I laid on my stomach on the floor of his
bedroom with the stereo turned up dangerously loud. Before that, I
had never heard anything so loud, angry, funny, desperate, passionate
and real.

In my college days, I freelanced for the student newspaper's arts
page. I was asked to write a retrospective on the Clash, and to
comment on a newly released compilation. After staying up all night,
trying to write, I called my editor and said I couldn't do it.

Later that summer, I found the perfect story for such an article, an
article I never wrote:

My friend Dave, lead writer for the arts page, was sent to cover a
show at a local night club. He asked if I wanted to tag along, and I
said that I would. The band, the Cucumbers, was a "quirky" pop band
from New Jersey. Their sound was sort of a 10,000 Maniacs meets the
Talking Heads. The audience was polite and sat down their beers long
enough to clap after each number, even though they started to all
blend together halfway into their set. After about forty minutes,
The Cucumbers played their last number, thanked the audience and left
the stage. Quietly, the people around me finished their drinks and
started to leave the club.

Then, the bartender turned on the large screen TV next to the stage
and put in a video tape. It was concert footage of the Clash's
London Calling tour. The camera held tightly to Joe Strummer's sweat-
drenched face as he belted that "phony Beatlemania has bitten the
dust." Soon, the sound of Mick Jones siren-like guitar solo took
over the bar. And something strange happened. The people who were
nearing the door turned around and came back to their seats. People
moved chairs and tables closer to the TV screen. I could hear people
singing along. People actually clapped between songs. Many ordered
more beer and settled in for the show.

That night, I was one of those people who came to the Bluebird
wanting (but not expecting) to see a great live band. I did see a
great live band, and it wasn't the band named on my ticket stub.

I felt strange walking out of the Bluebird that night. It was like
watching home movies of a long dead relative and reliving the good
times. I realized that I had become sentimental for the punk era of
the late seventies/early eighties. I realized that I had become like
the aging hippies Johnny Rotten had warned us about. I realized I
had been bitten by my own form of "Beatlemania," my own nostalgia
trip.

It's hard not to romanticize a part of one's life that is as
transformative as the adolescent years. It's hard not to look back
on that music as the best I'll ever hear. It's hard not to believe
that I was at my most rebellious in the midst of the BIG rebellion
that was punk. It's hard not to get caught up in the glory and
passion of it all.

The fact is, the Clash may not be the greatest rock and roll band.
For me, however, Joe Strummer spoke to me with a voice, a message, a
sound that my 14 year old ears ached to hear, and sometimes my 37
year old ears still ache to hear it.

And now, that voice is gone.

enough of them, I'll put together a composite list of your

musicaljustice4u@.... For those of you who are into lists (and
since I'm the anal-retentive type myself), the entire Musical

WHO'S YOUR FAVORITE?
--------------------
If you've been listening to Musical Justice recently, you may
have heard the promos for their new Rewards/Favorite Station
program. As a Live365 user, you get to select one station as your
"favorite" and as the Stones (and the Temptations before
them) once said. I "ain't too proud to beg" for you to
choose Musical Justice as your #1 station. To pick us, just go to
your Presets and select Musical Justice from the drop-down box at the

MUSICAL JUSTICE TRIVIA
-----------------------
1. This Grammy-winning band played at the wedding reception for
Richard Thompson's second marriage. Who are they?
2. Five Steve Earle albums have cracked the Top 10 on Billboard's
Country Charts. Name them.
3. This band, which featured Huey Lewis on vocals, backed Elvis
Costello on his debut, "My Aim is True" (although Lewis did
not appear on that record). Name them.
4. What pseudonym did Jeff Tweedy record under on the 1996 Golden
Smog release "Down by the Old Mainstream"?
5. This legendary No Depression artist's vocals appear
prominently on Whiskeytown's "Excuse Me While I Break My Own
Heart Tonight". Who is it?

Answers to these trivia questions can be found on the main station
web page located at http://www.live365.com/stations/39801

ONLINE GEMS & COOL LINKS
------------------------
Two of the best records of 2002 were probably not available for sale
at your neighborhood record shop but you've been hearing them on
Musical Justice for a few months. The first of those is Matthew
Ryan's Dissent From The Living Room. You can order it at
Matthew's website, http://www.matthewryanonline.com. The other
one comes from underrated guitar legend, Richard Thompson. It's
another of his self-released live CDs, Semi-Detached Mock Tudor,
which can be ordered at http://www.richardthompson-music.com.

Also, we often get asked where to find some of the more obscure CDs
on our playlist. Three of the best online CD stores are Miles of
Music (www.milesofmusic.com), Village Records
(www.villagerecords.com) and Waterloo Records
(www.waterloorecords.com) . Each of them have slightly different
areas of specialty. For example, I think Austin-based Waterloo
Records has the deepest selection of Texas music in the world.
Between the three of them, they pretty much cover Musical
Justice's playlist from end-to-end.

STUFF YOU PROBABLY WON'T HEAR ANYWHERE ELSE
-------------------------------------------
In addition to the previously mentioned Matthew Ryan and Richard
Thompson CDs, probably the new item that I'm the most excited
about comes from one of my favorite bands, the Jayhawks. The
CD, "Live at the Women's Club" is currently available
only at their live shows. It's an acoustic show recorded April
26, 2002 at The Women's Club in Minneapolis. The show features a
stripped down sound by a stripped down three-piece version of the
band consisting of Tim O'Reagan, Marc Perlman and Gary Louris.
In addition to old favorites like Blue, Trouble and Waiting for the
Sun, it features tracks from their upcoming spring release…

Occasionally I get emails from bands that listen to Musical Justice
and feel like they might fit into our playlist and I try to give them
a listen when time permits. Two of those bands, Marshallcity
(www.marshallcity.com) and The Draft (www.the-draft.com) have been
recent additions to our playlist. Both these indie bands have a
great sound so listen for them. If you like them, check out their
websites where you can pick up their CDs… and remember that you
heard them on Musical Justice first…

I'm always looking for new & rare material to add to our
playlists. Some of the rare stuff you are likely to hear in the near
future include Ryan Adams and Elton John's duets on CMT, Bruce
Springsteen performing with the Wallflowers on MTC, Paul Simon
singing with George Harrison on an early SNL and a great live version
of "In The Ghetto" sung by Natalie Merchant with Tracy
Chapman. If you have any other suggestions of cool rare performances
you'd like us to share with the other Musical Justice listeners,
please send them our way!

COMING SOON/UPCOMING RELEASES
-----------------------------
This is THE slow time of year for new releases… I'm excited
about one CD coming out before the end of the month and it's Jesse
Malin's "The Fine Art of Self-Destruction" due on January
28th. The CD was Uncut Magazine's Album of the Month in December
and was produced by Malin's ubiquitous drinking buddy, Ryan
Adams…
