Music Review of Tony Adamo's 'Straight Up Deal'
http://www.myspace.com/tonyrocadamo

by Stuart Hamilton, Zeitgeist
http://z14.invisionfree.com/Zeitgeist/index.php?showtopic=1749

Jazz vocalist Tony Adamo has taken a sideways step with his latest CD,
moving into a world of late night New Orleans style funk, rhythm and
Blues, despite its origins in the plastic world of Hollywood,
California. The first thing that leaps out you is the voice. Imagine,
if you can, Lou Rawls fronting Tower of Power, and you'll have an idea
of where the music offered up here is coming from. And it's a mighty
fine place to be, especially on the self penned material which just
pulses with late night grooves.

With a punchy horn section blowing in all the right places and a funky
rhythm section hitting all the right beats, the topping of Neil
Larsens organ is just icing on the cake. Actually, I've just been
reading the credits and not only is 'Groove Therapy' one of the
highlights but it actually features the legendary Doc Kupka from Tower
of Power blowing baritone sax on a tribute to - Doc Kupka! So, looks
like that 'Lou Rawls fronting Tower of Power' statement I made earlier
may be right on the mark. The album also features an appearance by
another legend in the shape of Paul Jackson, bass guitarist from
Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters.

Although Adamo does sometimes slip into pure jazz, it's when he sticks
to the sultry and sweaty grooves of Joe Zawinul's 'Mercy Mercy Mercy'
and his own 'No Strings', 'Lolita' and the aforementioned 'Groove
Therapy' that he really makes his mark. The album does veer around a
bit in style and flavour, which is slightly to its detriment as the
ballads, in particular, miss the mark. It actually would have been a
better album shorn of the two closing numbers 'Stolen Moments' and
'Speak Low', which drift away rather than finishing with a killer
blow. But the vocals and performances do make it worth a listen,
especially when that irresistible groove kicks in.

BETA Records Bridges The Gap Between PHP And JAVA To Solve Performance
And Scalability Issues.

BETA Records ( http://www.betarecords.com/ ), in anticipation of their
upcoming release of Version 3 (V3) of their online music social
community, has created a technological innovation that could
ultimately allow websites to become more dynamic, creative and
sophisticated while enabling companies to cut costs and reduce loads
on servers needed in large-scale clusters.

Called "BETACache," the new technology resulted from BETAs PHP
developers Rock Mutchler, Paul-Anton van Handel, Jon Bauer, Bernhard
Schenkenfelder, and Eric Hollander.

"These guys may have devised the ultimate scalability breakthrough for
large-scale communities around the world - it's like taking the
performance of a Volkswagen and turning it into a Bentley overnight,"
says Chris Honetschlaeger, BETA Records president. "From Facebook down
to the world's 20 million PHP websites, we at BETA are hopeful to
finally give back to the PHP community we so admire."

PHP applications require a means of caching data from remote services,
expensive database queries and other performance-killing operations.
These problems are greatly magnified by Web 2.0's heavy reliance on
numerous AJAX requests to the web application, and frequent web
service calls to partners.

"BETACache could offer a superior alternative to the widely-used
memcached, as well as opening up a tremendous amount of other features
to PHP application engineers through JCS," says Rock Mutchler, BETA VP
of Technology. "With the BETACache process in place, we can now use
the leading technologies to solve the performance issues that
developers face. At BETA we have modified Zend Cache in the Zend
Framework, by adding our own custom object that makes use of the Zend
Platform Java Bridge."

The Zend Platform PHP/Java Bridge is a PHP module which provides
stable and high-performance access to a Java Virtual Machine. "Through
this we're able to use the JCS package to provide an enterprise-class,
pluggable and tunable distributed caching system written in Java,"
Mutchler states.

BETACache offers a clustered, distributed cache system which
automatically caches objects in local memory, local disk, or on remote
servers. The Zend Java Bridge allows high-performance enterprise-class
integration between the PHP environment and JCS. "We are excited about
future enhancements of BETACache to leverage Enterprise Java
persistence systems in our clustered PHP application," Hollander said.

BETA Records LLC will soon be providing source code and documentation
for the BETACache system. For further information: office@....

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jazz-Funk At Its Best with STEPHEN PFISTER'S "Monster From The Deep
Invades The Beach Party" CD

Keyboardist/producer Stephen Pfister has just released his fourth CD,
"Monster From The Deep Invades The Beach Party". This jazz-funk
adventure has already garnered extraordinary reviews. On the opening
track "Welcome To The Beach", Pfister showcases his amazing talents on
both piano and Hammond B-3 organ. "Hey Uncle Ralph (Do You Have
Anything Suzy Can Dance To?)" is an funky dance jam with whirling key
grooves. Smooth jazz radio will love the CD closer, "The Walk Home",
with a great sax solo and Pfister's talents for creating superb
melodies with his piano playing.

You can go to www.cdbaby.com/cd/pfister3 for all Stephen Pfister info
and "Monster From The Deep Invades The Beach Party" CD ordering.

Stephen Pfister is an immensely talented artist who has made his home
for the last 11 years in the town of Blue Hill, Maine. Doesn't seem
like a likely place, but there are musicians everywhere. Playing piano
and organ for Big Pete Pearson when he was in Bar Harbor, ME. started
things off. That lead to the first CD "Less Is More" with bassist
Jason Fiefield and saxophonist Mark Hanson. You can order the C To C CD
at www.cdbaby.com/cd/c2c. Pfister then went on to record a dynamic
solo CD "Cold Hands-Warm Heart" that is also available at
www.cdbaby.com/cd/pfister . In 2006, Pfister released the funky
"Coastal Grooves" which Smother Review said "Good Stuff...Buy it Now".
The CD can be found at www.cdbaby.com/pfister2.

Pfister cites the influence of Les McCann, Ramsey Lewis and Jimmy
Smith with a little Dr. John thrown in. Take a visit to the Downeast
Maine region (Blue Hill, Bar Harbor and Bangor, USA) and you will find
Stephen Pfister, one very talented keyboard player. Those who can't
make the trek can experience all his genius on his latest CD "Monster
From The Deep Invades The Beach Party".

"Madness" -- a song by Afro Groove artist Karlex from his debut CD
'Ghetto Fabulous' -- was featured in the PBS documentary series Road
Trip Nation; episode "Team Big starts off their trip in New York
City." This is in addition to two documentary film placements in
France, including "Let's Harmonize" on a documentary about Les Halles
in Paris and "I've got news" in a documentary being finished about the
Fondation Mérieux.

Started by a group of recent college grads who hit the road to find
their own paths in life, Roadtrip Nation has evolved into a national
movement on 100 colleges that empowers students to hit the road and
create this experience for themselves. On the road, students interview
leaders from all walks of life to learn how they discovered their
passion, and built their life around it. PBS (Public Broadcasting
Service), one of the only sources for televised independent-minded
content, has been broadcasting the Roadtrip Nation documentary series
since September 1st.

Fondation Mérieux is dedicated to controlling infectious diseases in
developing countries. Its approach focuses on prevention and diagnosis
and breaks the barriers that may exist between human and animal
medicine, North and South, and all involved.

Karlex, who has been actively seeking a distribution partner in North
America, will be performing at the BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music)
Cafe Live as part of the 'Music Is The Weapon' weekend benefit
presented by MusicDish on April 4-5, 2008. Signed with Lil' People
Records in France and distributed in the Netherlands and UK, the
Haitian American artist has been making waves ever since the release
of his album in the fall of 2006.

Karlex recently completed a radio promotion campaign through Twin
Vision, resulting in 65 Triple-A radio stations/shows picking it up
across the country, including Bridgeport (CT), Tampa (FL),
Lafayette/Baton Rouge (LA), Grand Rapids (MI), St. Louis (MO),
Minneapolis (MN), Trenton (NJ), Santa Fe (NM), Philadelphia (PA),
Cleveland (OH), Portland (OR), Houston (TX), and Madison (WI). He has
also received airplay on over 50 radio stations in France's major markets.

Karlex has also maintained a high visibility online through the
MusicDish Network, with features on ARTISTdirect, UBL and Amie Street
Music in the last 2 months. Most recently, he was featured in the
October UBL newsletter and is charting at #6 in the UBL top 25 world
music chart, as well as at #34 in the UBL ultimate top 100 chart.

Karlex is a member of the MusicDish Network, a comprehensive artist
development program, leveraging brand development, saturated and

The long delayed publication of this book is finally over.

The 8-Tone Quarto-Modes Concept is a special study into the
diminished and its application for mainstream jazz players, advanced
improvisators, and notational composers. Ten years in development,
and written by an internationally acclaimed musician for musicians
familiar with standard scaletone harmony, it is a new paradigm for
further possibilities in jazz, improvisational music, and notational
composition.

PROGRAM NOTE:
My final show of the year will be of the holiday variety. I've
received a good amount of mp3s and a few CDs from listeners and
artists. Thanks so much! The show will air 12/16 at the usual 7pm
EST time. It will have music that seems appropo to the time of the
year, tho not necessarily the sort of songs you might associate it
with. If you're a longtime fan of RCB then you already have a sense
of it. Hope you can join me for this very special edition.
Also remember..during the first week of January 2008 I will announce
contents of 3 charts: the quarterly Winter 2008 chart, the Top 100
of 2007, and a revamped All-Time Chart. These charts rank top artists
(not songs, not albums)

Dear colleagues, educators and friends,
An intense musical year is just finishing...

With MTM (Martina/Torres/Manassero) I've performed in
many places of Argentina (Rosario, Corral de Bustos,
Buenos Aires, Miramar), beginning at the International
Miramar Jazz Festival in January and finishing at the
XI International Rosario Jazz Festival in
October/November; sharing with many great local and
international guests: H.Greene (USA),
G.Haslam and R.Jones (UK),A.Demogli,P.Satek,A.Santos
and E.Maxera cuarteto (Argentina).
I was invited to the International Toledo Jazz
Festival 2007(Spain) in August and to the
International Java Jazz Festival 2008 in March as
well...

In April/May "Urban beyond", the new AsiaBeat Project
recording by Lewis Pragasam was released. It was in
the works for about a year or so.The recordings were
done in different locations around the world and they
featured many musicians/artists from Vietnam,
Australia, Argentina, India, China, Singapore, France,
Korea, Indonesia and Malaysia.

At this moment we´re producing my new project "Luna
rosarina" to be released next year, with great guest
musicians involved:
J.Lorber,M.Parmisano,J.Morelli,L.Pragasam,G.Luciani,G.Vargas,I.Tarabelli,G.Torre\
s,O.Manassero.

On my official website you can find more information,

Subject: Charlie Nothing and his dingulator
sounni_ali
Send Email Send Email

By Phil Campbell
http://www.hobbyhorsecafe.com

In October 2007, legendary performer Charlie Nothing passed away at
his Soquel California home. The following article was originally
published in The Fretboard Journal, Number 6, Summer 2007. Charlie was
pleased with the story, saying "I've had interviews and articles
before but yours is the best by far… Thank you so much!"

Thank you Charlie Nothing! We miss you.

----------

According to his official biography, Charlie Nothing "was not born,
did not go to school, did not die," and his main instrument is the
dingulator. Obsessive record collectors may recall his name from the
1967 LP The Psychedelic Saxophone of Charlie Nothing, one of the only
non-guitar records released on John Fahey's Takoma label. Contemporary
listeners might know Nothing from his powerful performance of
dingulation, as he calls his music, in Chicago at the 2005 Two Million
Tongues Festival. Featuring a roster of difficult-to-categorize
musicians, it was the ideal venue for this difficult-to-categorize
performer. Josephine Foster, who was also on the bill, describes him
as being like "the incarnation of Ubu Rex" and says, "Charlie seems to
lose himself deeply in the raw spirit of performance."

In the years between 1967 and 2005, you might have crossed paths with
Nothing at any number of places. Perhaps it was in a New York loft in
the mid 1960s, when he gave a series of performances that had grown
out of the drug scene and the jam sessions around his house. Nothing's
first band included himself on sopranino sax, a classically trained
Indian tabla drummer and a young Japanese woman who recited litanies
of everyday items such as "underarm deodorant, soap, green shoes, pink
shoes, lipstick…"

Next came the First Uniphrenic Church and Bank Band, a group that
included a young, pre-Blondie Debbie Harry in what must have been some
of her first vocal performances. Besides playing the Village Gate, the
Uniphrenic band put on a series of Friday night concerts in a friend's
Manhattan loft, where everything, including the toilet, was decorated
in always-fashionable black. The loft concerts were extremely
popular--perhaps it was the music or maybe it was the free beer--but
the fire department eventually shut them down.

Nothing then moved on to Los Angeles, where he performed at an arena
show with Frank Zappa; joined and then quit the cast of Hair; and
performed a flute concert at the Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art. The
museum curator assured Nothing that there would be no restrictions on
his performance, so the concert took place in the men's room after
hours for an audience of two.

After his stint in Los Angeles, Nothing went north to the Bay Area,
where he lived in a squat in the back of a Haight-Ashbury sandal shop
and played love-ins, North Beach jazz clubs and similar venues of the
era. Nothing recorded The Psychedelic Saxophone of Charlie Nothing
during this period. The album featured saxophone improvisation
accompanied by concert gong, conga drum and a banjo ukulele that was
borrowed from Tiny Tim for the occasion. Nothing also drew the cover
art. Not surprisingly, it never cracked the Billboard Top 100, but it
did attain some cult success in Europe among aficionados of free
improvised music.

Nothing eventually settled in Santa Cruz, California, where he became
a beekeeper and an expert in the removal of stinging insects. He did
not perform from 1984 until 2004, feeling he had "evolved past the
entertaining-monkey-jumping -up-and-down-on-the-stage stage." But
Nothing was not artistically inactive. He published books (under the
name Charles Martin Simon), created art in many different media and
even sent a tape of music to Ronald Reagan. The White House replied
with a nice letter that opened: "Dear Mr. Nothing, The President
appreciates your support..."

And he built dingulators, of course, a class of instrument he
invented. At first glance, a dingulator has superficial similarities
to a steel-bodied National-style guitar. The number of strings varies,
up to as many as 21, but seven or eight strings is typical.
Dingulators have raised frets akin to those on a sitar, and each one
is unique. Classic examples tend to have scrolls and curlicues
reminiscent of a Gibson Style 0 guitar or perhaps a Gibson H-4
mandola. They are made from old cars.

Why cars? "Cars have the right kind of steel," Nothing explains. "Cars
have got very soulful steel." But the steel has to come from older
cars: "Metal on new cars, whether it's American or foreign, is just
not up to quality." Nothing's current project is to make a dingulator
from a 1965 VW Karmann Ghia. There is a political message in his
artistic recycling. "It's a sword-to-plowshare kind of thing," he
says. "Cars to guitars."

Dingulators have steel strings and friction pegs. Their tuning is
variable, organic and evolving. "The ideal would be to never tune
them, to just find where they are going and go with it," he says. "But
sometimes I do make adjustments." Nothing is a highly skilled artisan
and welder. The form of each dingulator is hand-drawn in chalk
directly onto the metal.

Foster says, "Dingulators remind me of African instruments; they are
folk-art masterpieces." The African influence is probably real.
Talking about the origin of dingulators, Nothing demonstrated his
favorite kalimba, which had a broken tine that produced a note with a
deep, rich buzz. That one buzzing note had the sound he liked and
saved the otherwise unremarkable instrument from the trashcan.

What does a dingulator sound like? "They are tuned percussion to
animate and punctuate his spoken-word diatribes," Foster explains.
Another point of reference might be Hans Reichel's early,
pre-daxophone, modified-guitar recordings; Derek Bailey's music also
comes to mind. Nothing, though, is unfamiliar with both Reichel and
Bailey, so it seems that dingulation evolved on its own.

Nothing can be in-your-face confrontational, especially in his
explicitly political songs, but there are more facets to his music. As
he demonstrated the voice of each individual dingulator, Nothing
improvised music of great beauty, passion and intensity. He plays
completely in the moment and is sometimes possessed by musical
spirits. What are Nothing's musical influences? "Everything," he says.
"I'm influenced probably as much by the stuff I don't like as the
stuff I like. So I'd have to say I'm influenced by everything." One of
the things Nothing doesn't like is Muzak. You can believe him when he
promises, "Dingulation will never be on Muzak!"

In 2004, Nothing realized he was, in fact, "a monkey jumping up and
down" and he began performing in public again. After playing small
venues in the Santa Cruz area, he began to receive invitations to
various music festivals, including the Pauze Festival in Ghent,
Belgium, and the Two Million Tongues Festival in Chicago. There was,
however, one problem with launching this new phase of his career:
Dingulators aren't particularly portable. To get around that obstacle,
Nothing has started work on a smaller travel version. He's building a
dingulator with a removable neck that can be stored in the body,
making a compact and indestructible steel carrying case. All
dimensions were carefully planned to meet international airline
requirements for carry-on luggage. It remains to be seen if the
airport bureaucracies will be able to cope with dingulation.

Subject: Synesthesia Now Taking Orders For Mandala 2.0
soundsmusic
Send Email Send Email

Synesthesia Corporation ( http://www.synesthesiacorp.com ) today
launched a new website for the Mandala 2.0 High-Def Drum & Synthesizer
and announced that it is now taking orders for the new product. The
new website is http://mandaladrum.com

Mandala 2.0 is the new version of Synesthesia's wildly popular,
patented high-def drum and synthesizer, co-developed with professional
drummer Danny Carey of the progressive rock band Tool. The company
announced the new product in October, and will begin shipping in early
December.

The new website links directly to the Google Group for Mandala Drums,
a site where professional and amateur drummers connect with each
other, pose and answer questions about using the Mandala and share
electronic drumming insights. Mandala website visitors also will find
customer support, audio and video snippets of the Mandala in action
and the latest updates about professional drummers using Mandalas.
Future plans for the site include social networking tools that will
allow Mandala enthusiasts to trade homemade presets, drum pad
configurations and sound samples.

"We've been working around the clock to get the Mandala 2.0 into the
hands of those who've been anxiously awaiting its arrival," said Vince
De Franco, Synesthesia founder and CEO, and inventor of the Mandala.
"We're on track to start shipping December 1. We appreciate all the
enthusiasm directed our way after unveiling the new Mandala 2.0. We
think it's a huge leap forward in harnessing technology to enable
virtually unlimited potential for creating music."

The Mandala 2.0 retails for $349, and is available online at
http://mandaladrum.com. Each Mandala is hand-crafted and thoroughly
tested before it is shipped. Expect two-week delivery. Synesthesia is
offering eligible 1.0 customers $50 off any Mandala 2.0 drum they buy
before May 31, 2008.

Now a computer peripheral - its USB cable plugs into PC or Mac - the
Mandala 2.0 is the only electronic drum that truly emulates an
acoustic drum. It offers drummers and musical explorers the only drum
pad that knows exactly where it's hit and how hard, across seven
assignable zones - with an immediate trigger delivering the
fastest-traveling sound possible.

A new kind of synthesizer, the Mandala 2.0 packages a musical range so
wide it simultaneously offers players the top of the line, most
accurate model of a physical drum (via 3,000 professionally created,
proprietary samples of the Black Beauty Snare Drum) - along with a
library of sounds derived from more than 100 other instruments. In
all, the Mandala 2.0 features four gigabytes of sound samples. It's a
synthesizer with drumsticks, with a drum pad so sensitive it responds
even to a fingertip touch.

About Synesthesia
Synesthesia Corporation ( http://www.synesthesiacorp.com ) is
exploring new sonic terrain with the Mandala, its patented high-def
drum and synthesizer - the only electronic drum that faithfully
emulates an acoustic drum, and then transcends it. A new kind of
synthesizer, the Mandala offers the world's fastest trigger, precise
strike detection across the entire pad, and a musical range so wide it
can be the top of the line Black Beauty Snare Drum or virtually any
other instrument imaginable. The Mandala plugs into PC or Mac via USB
cable, and works seamlessly with most major mixing programs.
Co-developed with professional drummer Danny Carey of Tool, Mandalas
are used by professionals and hobbyists the world over. Vince De
Franco - inventor, physicist and musician - founded Synesthesia to
develop his state-of-the-art electronic sensor technology and to use
it to create products that inspire imagination and exploration. Based
in Laurel Canyon, Calif., the company currently has several other
products in development.

PROGRAM NOTE:
The HOLIDAY show you know about. I will say its' been fun to get,
both in person and in the mail, a record number of submissions for
this show. All of them will be included, and I still picked out a
few good tunes from past shows that will once again grace my
airwaves. Thanks to all that contributed.
This time of the year happens to be the busiest time of all for me in
relation to Radio Crystal Blue, as I begin the lab work..the
crunching of tallied numbers and names, the chart comparing, the
calculations, the machinations, the Beaker bottles with funny-colored
bubbles. I will be busy compiling the 3 big charts that make up the
quarterly, top 100 and all-time lists. I will issue a press release
first thing 2008 about it all. I can say this: There were about 9
artists that I felt could reach #1, and I'm still very confident
about 3 of them at this moment, even before I start getting to all
this work. We'll find out together in January.
I"m still seeking new CDs for airplay purposes...I KNOW there are new
ones out there....c'mon and contribute music to your favorite
internet radio program.

CHART PAGE AND SHOW: Winter 2008 Airplay Chart show will air noon
EST on 1/5/08 on Live365 as I count down the best recording artists
you've heard in October, November and December 2007.
All charts.......the Top 100 of 2007, the All Time Chart, and the
Winter 2008 will be published the first week of January.
After this, the next standard RCB show will air on Sunday 1/6/08 7pm
EST

involving the NYC subway system. Specifically I'll be riding each
line of the MTA in one day...tho not going as far as reaching every
station stop. Some of you know about it already having seen my posts
on Facebook and on the personal blog. Read about it in both places
to be caught up on what it's all about.

I'm attending 2 gigs but otherwise going to play the hermit role for
the holidays. For those pursuing bookings, new dates have been
added; I'll continue to field inquiries.

For this newsletter, at a most sacred time of the year, I close with
the great Kerouac, from "Dharma Bums":
"I bless you, all living things, I bless you in the endless past, I
bless you in the endless present, I bless you in the endless future,
amen."
