will be returned to you only if you enclose a pre-paid, self-addressed envelope.

Submissions via email: please email your abstract or score (Word documents and

CFP: Contemporary Music and Spirituality

The revival of religious or spiritually-inspired music in the last twenty years
by so many composers (such as Adams, Andriessen, Birtwistle, Grisey,
Gubaydulina, Harvey, Henze, MacMillan, Messiaen, Pärt, Penderecki, Stockhausen
and Tavener) and many artists is a sign of a profound change in the arts and
their engagement with society. This conference will seek to explore why and how
these composers and others have sought to convey religious or spiritual
expression through music. How does this music engage with and transform the
traditional narratives of modernity, and how has this music created a vision for
the role of music in the twenty-first century? How can contemporary music shape
our understanding of the divine in a so-called secular age, and what does this
say about the nature of music and spirituality?

This conference will take place at Southbank Centre, London in collaboration
with the Royal Musical Association from 1-3 February 2008. Keynote speakers at
the conference include the composers Jonathan Harvey, James MacMillan and
Francis Pott. It will dovetail with the opening of the Messiaen festival at
Southbank Centre. As part of the conference, there will be a roundtable
discussion on Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du Temps on Sunday 3 February from
2.30 p.m, chaired by Robert Sholl with participants Pierre-Laurent Aimard, and
Jonathan Harvey. This event will include live performances of extracts from the
Quartet performed by the Nash Ensemble, and will be followed at 6 p.m. by a
complete performance of the work.

Proposals for papers (of 20 minutes) on any subject related to the main
conference theme should be sent to robert.sholl at tvu.ac.uk by November 20.
Proposals should be in English, and contain an abstract of 300 words maximum.
They also should include your name, a short biographical note, and your contact
details.

CONCEPTS OF CREATIVITY IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY ENGLAND

Two-day International Interdisciplinary Symposium, 6–7 September 2008
School of Arts, Histories and Cultures, University of Manchester, UK

Invited speakers: Prof. James Winn, Boston
University (Keynote speaker); Prof. Andrew
Walkling, Binghamton University; Prof. Amanda
Eubanks Winkler, Syracuse University

Creation: 'a making or forming of something, as it were, out of nothing'
Edward Phillips, A Nevv VVorld of VVords, Or a
General English Dictionary (London, 1678)

The early modern period witnessed the flowering
of what, today, we would call the creative arts
in England, and in recent years the social and
cultural significance of such activities has come
to be appreciated increasingly by scholars across
a broad range of disciplines. But what exactly
did it mean to form something, ‘as it were, out
of nothing’ in the seventeenth century? While our
modern understanding of creativity is firmly
based around ideas of imagination and
originality, it is far from clear that such
concepts were always relevant to the production
of visual art, music, plays, poetry and
literature in the seventeenth century; moreover,
basic tenets that we tend to take for
granted—such as the primacy of the author—have
been shown to be inappropriate in a number of
significant studies. The aim of this
interdisciplinary symposium is to explore ways in
which we can seek to understand what it meant to
be creative in the early modern period.

We welcome proposals for papers from an
interdisciplinary field, including cultural
historians, art historians, dance historians,
theatre historians, musicologists and literary
scholars. The deadline for receipt of abstracts
is 31 January 2008; full details of the call for papers can be found at:

Junior and Post-Doctoral Fellowships
The Bill and Carol Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry
Emory University

The Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry at Emory University is accepting
applications for three Junior and Post-Doctoral fellowships for an academic of
study, teaching, and residence in the Center. The FCHI Fellows Program offers
research opportunities to those trained in the humanities as traditionally
defined and to others seriously interested in humanistic issues; research
projects must be humanistic, but fellows may hold the Ph.D. in any discipline.
We especially seek applicants and projects that will benefit from and contribute
to the interdisciplinary nature of the group of Fellows and the work of the
FCHI.

Junior Fellows are scholars who, at the beginning of the fellowship year, will
be at least three years beyond receipt of the Ph.D., and normally no more than
ten (i.e., who received their Ph.D.s before Fall 2005). Post-Doctoral Fellows,
who must have the Ph.D. in hand before submission of their applications, are
awarded to those who have held the Ph.D. for no more than three years before
application for the fellowships (the Ph.D. awarded between Fall 2005 and Fall
2007).

Besides being an active member of the Center's intellectual agenda through the
academic year, Fellows will be expected to offer an upper-level
interdisciplinary undergraduate seminar on a subject of their choice during the
spring of the fellowship year. Stipends of $40,000 will be offered to Junior
and Post-Doctoral Fellows, along with a research budget of $2,000, shared office
space in the Center, and library access. The deadline for submission of
completed applications is February 28, 2008; awards will be announced in
mid-April 2008. Application forms and further information are available from
the Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry at 404-727-6424 or chi at emory.edu, on

Theorizing the Boss: Critical Readings of the Songs of Bruce Springsteen

We invite chapter proposals for an edited volume of critical
theoretical essays on Bruce Springsteen's work. We encourage a wide
range of approaches, particularly literary and cultural studies, but
chapters should be written in a style accessible to a non-academic
audience. Chapters might use any number of theoretical approaches to
consider relevant themes in Springsteen's oeuvre. Here are a few
possible themes:

Readings of genre, including the dramatic monologue
American voices: the American dream, Manifest Destiny, or American
Ideals versus American Reality
Prophecy and visionary voices
Narratives of the immigrant and oppressed
The nuclear family and conservatism
Considerations of violence
Springsteen as Catholic apologist/liturgist

We are especially eager for readings of Springsteen's work alongside
the work of those writers and musicians who have most influenced him,
including, but not limited to, Flannery O'Connor, Walker Percy, John
Steinbeck, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Bob Dylan.

Please send a 500-word proposal and full vita to Roxanne Harde
(rharde at augustana.ca) and Irwin Streight (streight-i at rmc.ca) by
7 January 2008. Upon acceptance, articles of around 8000 words will
be due 1 June 2008. Please feel free to get in touch with any questions.
