Subject: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Australian & New Zealand Postgraduate Music Research Register
ams_philadel...
Send Email Send Email

The Musicological Society of Australia is delighted to announce the launch of
the Australian & New Zealand Postgraduate Music Research Register. The register
is accessible via a link at http://msa.org.au/thesisregister.html

The register is a database which contains the details of more than 2000
music-related theses completed since 1917 or in progress at universities in
Australia and New Zealand. The database can be browsed in its totality, within
its 39 subject classifications, or in any combination of classifications. A
keyword search is also available. The register has been compiled from library
catalogues and in conjunction with some authors, particularly those whose
projects are in progress. It includes some abstracts, and provides links to
digital copies of many of the more recent theses.

A limited number of dissertations on Australian and New Zealand topics completed
at overseas universities are also included, and we would very much like to
improve the comprehensivity of this category.

***If you are working on, or have completed a postgraduate dissertation on an
Australian or New Zealand topic we would very much appreciate your submitting
your project to us for inclusion. The information required is listed on the
"Include Your Thesis" page of the register website.***

best wishes to you all
Stephanie Rocke

Musicological Society of Australia.

Subject: ANNOUNCEMENT: H. Wiley Hitchcock, 1923-2007
ams_philadel...
Send Email Send Email

The Conservatory of Music of Brooklyn College (CUNY) deeply regrets to announce that Distinguished Professor emeritus H. Wiley Hitchcock, 84, passed away in the early morning of December 5, 2007, after a lengthy illness.  He was born September 28, 1923, in Detroit, MI.   After attending Dartmouth ( A.B., 1944) and University of Michigan (M.M. 1948, Ph.D. 1954) –  studying in 1949 at the Conservatoire Américain (under Nadia Boulanger) – and after teaching at the University of Michigan, N.Y.U., and Hunter College, Professor Hitchcock came to Brooklyn College in 1971 where he was the founding director of the college's Institute for Studies in American Music (ISAM).  Wiley was brilliant, a true man of letters, a model musicologist with multifaceted interests, impeccable standards, and path-breaking publications.  His highly esteemed work in American music studies (New Grove Dictionary of American Music; his Prentice-Hall textbook series that included his Music in the United States; studies on Charles Ives, etc. etc.) was built upon his excellent contributions to the fields of French and Italian Baroque music (M.-A. Charpentier, G. Caccini, et al.).  He was a staunch advocate for American music of all kinds.  In 1990-92 he served as elected president of the American Musicological Society, and the number of distinguished projects and boards on which he served seems endless.  Wiley was a respected colleague at the Conservatory as well as at the CUNY Graduate Center's Doctoral Program in Music, where he became a helpful and encouraging mentor and friend to many newly minted Ph.D.'s in music.  Those of us who knew Wiley personally always relished the notes or letters he sent us or the newsy gossip he might share.

For an interview that Wiley gave Frank J. Oteri in November 2002 and recalls for us his special style and wit, see: http://newmusicbox.org/44/interview_hitchcock.pdf

The Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College hopes to rename ISAM as the Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music, in Professor Hitchcock's memory.

Wiley is survived by his wife Janet and a daughter and son, Susan and Hugh, from his first marriage, as well as two grandchildren.   There will be a memorial service at a later date to be announced by the family.  (We will let you know.)  Condolences may be sent to Janet Hitchcock at 1192 Park Avenue #10E, New York NY 10128.

This past year, Jean-Luc Nancy's book Listening was translated into English and
published by Fordham University Press. Following up on this publication, the
SMT Music and Philosophy Interest Group led a very successful and stimulating
discussion at the Baltimore 2007 annual meeting. In response to the excitement
this discussion produced, the interest group welcomes preliminary proposals from
music theorists, musicologists, and philosophers for a proposed special session
relating music, musicology, and music theory with Nancy's thought for a
presentation at the AMS/SMT 2008 joint meeting in Nashville. Any topics
exploring the relationship between Nancy's thought and music are welcome, but
here are a few suggestions:

Hearing and Listening (entendre, ecouter); Sight, Sound, Meaning, and Sense;
Resonance; Renvoi; The Ontology of Music; The Resonant Subject/Self; "Music
Listening to Itself"; Music and the Political; Music's relation to and of
Nancy's philosophical themes (freedom, community, myth, literary communism,
ex-tasis, body, presence, ecotechnics, love, touch, being-with, being singular
plural, etc.); Music and Phenomenology (Derrida, Lacoue-Labarthe, Levinas,;
Heidegger, Husserl, Hegel); The "Nancian" Musical Work; "The Muses"; Mousike and
the Plural Arts; Music and Community; Nancy and Electronic Dance Music; Any
other topic relating Nancy's thought and Music

Please send us short proposals (around 200 words) to our email address --
philosophymusic_at_gmail.com -- by December 30, 2007. Based on the number of
proposals we receive, we will assemble a full special session proposal, and then
request full abstracts and proposals according to SMT guidelines for the
conference deadline of January 15. Please email us with any questions. Looking
forward to it!

Subject: ESSAY AWARD: Mannes Institute, Miles Levin Musical Essay Award

The Mannes Institute proudly announces its third annual Miles Levin Musical
Essay Award honoring an outstanding essay on the topic of Jazz Meets Pop, the
theme of this year's Institute from June 15-18, 2008 hosted as a special event
at Eastman School of Music. The winner will receive a cash prize of $250, and
present the winning essay as a plenary speech before the distinguished members
of the Institute. Where appropriate in light of other qualifications, the author
may be invited to attend some or all of the Institute proceedings as well.

This prestigious award is given in memory of Miles Levin, an extraordinary young
essayist whose life and work tragically were cut short. The essay, as spoken,
should be approximately fifteen to twenty minutes in length, and may relate to
jazz and/or pop music in any way. It may be reflective, historical, humorous,
metaphorical, philosophical, theoretical, poetic, playful, ironic, critical,
and/or personal, but must above all engage readers and listeners in a
compelling, entertaining, thoughtful, intuitive, sensitive, and provocative
manner. Please note that this award is not for a detailed scholarly or
analytical article comparable to those appearing in a professional journal, or
even a paper read at a formal academic conference. The tone is more in the
nature of a keynote address. The style is creative nonfiction, with an emphasis
on wit and imagination, charm and humor, insight and sincerity, sophistication
and erudition, oratorical flair, and the belletristic quality of the pro
se itself.

The essay may have intellectual and musical content, references, and allusions,
but should contain no footnotes, no bibliography, and no analytic handouts or
examples, other than perhaps a musical score. Doctoral students are ineligible.
Submissions may be considered for publication in a forthcoming periodical
entitled The Musical Essayist. Essays should be submitted electronically as pdf
files or MS Word documents to mannesinstitute_at_aol.com. Decisions are rendered
by committee. The submission deadline is March 1, 2008. For further information
see the Institute's website at www.mannes.edu/mi or contact Wayne Alpern,
Director, The Mannes Institute, mannesinstitute_at_aol.com, (212) 877-8350, 150

#2038 From: "AMS Office" <ams@...>
Date: Mon Dec 31, 2007 2:00 pm
Subject: ANNOUNCEMENT: DDM-Online End-of-Year Update
ams_philadel...
Send Email Send Email

Dear AMS-Announce Subscribers:

The end-of-year update of DDM-Online has now been completed and is available for your use at http://www.chmtl.indiana.edu/ddm/. The current  update of DDM-Online includes more than 500 new or revised records (received as of 26 December 2007) and brings the total size of the database to 13,763 records.

The substantial number of revised records reflects the final stage in the process we began last year of reviewing each in-progress record in DDM-Online to see if the dissertation had in fact been completed. In this
update, 499 records formerly located in the in-progress section for "Twentieth Century" have been moved over to the completed section in DDM-Online; work on all the earlier in-progress sections was largely completed in previous updates. Altogether, more than 1500 former "in progress" records have now been completed and moved to their respective completed sections.

In this update, we have also added hundreds of DA, UMI, RILM, and British Library Document Supply Centre numbers to the records for completed dissertations in the "Romantic" section of DDM-Online. Over the next year, we will be gradually supplying these numbers for the remaining sections of the database.

Of course, we continue to rely on each of you as individual authors to register your dissertation topics with us as you begin work and then to register the dissertations themselves anew as they are completed. Online
registration is available through a link on the DDM-Online home page, but we are always glad to send our conventional registration postcard upon request.

Please check your record in DDM-Online, and if it needs updating from a topic to a completed dissertation (or if it is not present at all), please do register your work with us.

In addition, we always appreciate hearing from individuals who can supply information on musicologically related dissertations that have not been registered with DDM-Online for one reason or another.

Finally, we would be very grateful if dissertation advisors and Directors of Graduate Study would periodically review the in-progress sections of DDM-Online and notify us of any projects they know to have been
abandoned (or completed). Quite naturally, authors sometimes neglect to notify us if they withdraw from a program, and in the absence of specific notice from an author or advisor, it is nearly impossible to identify an
abandoned project, especially since some dissertations are indeed "in progress" for many years.

With continuing appreciation for your cooperation and assistance,
                         Sincerely yours,
                            Thomas J. Mathiesen
