Subject: ANNOUNCEMENT: AMS Committee on Career-Related Issues: new *Career Guide* by Cynthia Verba now available
ams_philadel...
Send Email Send Email

The AMS Committee on Career-Related Issues is pleased to announce
that a new version of the *career guide* has been updated on the AMS
Web site. The new version, also by Cynthia Verba, is entitled "For
Graduate Students in the Fields of Music: A Guide to Professional
Development," and is intended to respond to the need for professional
development in two ways: first, it offers information and answers to
some of the basic questions that students ask about preparing for a
career in academe including samples of a variety of successful
application materials; and second, it recognizes that while many of
the questions and answers concerning professional development are
common across all fields, others pertaining to fields in music have a
distinctive cast. Above all, it tries to suggest ways of approaching
professional issues according to the needs of the individual,
promoting the idea that one must play an active role in professional
development.

Given the current economic situation, and the status of the job
market, graduate students must now begin engaging in professional
activities as early as possible learning how to write winning
fellowship proposals to fund their research, giving professional
talks and preparing articles for publication, polishing and
broadening teaching skills, and in general enhancing their
qualifications for the eventual job search, whether within academe or
beyond. We hope that members of AMS will find this guide not only
useful, but essential in building a solid career in musicology.

See
http://www.ams-net.org/committees/cri/For-Graduate-Students-In-The-Fields-of-Mus\
ic.pdf
for Cynthia Verba's new Career Guide.

See www.ams-net.org/committees/cri/ for the AMS CRI web site.

Kindly pass this on to those you think may be interested--we'd like
this to have wide distribution.

Many thanks are due to Cynthia Verba for generously providing this
helpful guide.

We are very pleased to invite you to the first conference by the Modal Music
Network, "Modal Music, a bridge between East and West". The conference will take
place on the 17th and 18th of November at Le Quartz, Scène Nationale de Brest,
France.

Since it was created in 2001 the association Drom has been working on the
promotion and transmission of folk cultures from oral tradition and of modal
music.

After 10 years of research, musical training and artistic creation, Drom now
acquires an international network and resource pole, that gathers performers,
composers, luthiers, instrument makers, educators and musicologists in different
musical styles (folk and erudite musics of oral tradition, ancient western
musics, contemporary musics and jazz).

Initiating a series of encounters that will occure every two years, this
conference invites researchers, musicians, teachers and cultural actors, for
them to discuss questions regarding cultural diversity, the interpretation of
modes with equally tempered instruments, the presence of modality in Western
musics from oral tradition, and its chances of meeting Eastern musics.

The report of these debates will lead to the publication of acts, first step for
the constitution of a data base.

You will find here a detailed program:
http://www.drom-kba.eu/IMG/pdf/conference-program.pdf

Around this event, « NoBorder 01, World Folk Musics » organised by Drom, Le
Quartz and the collective Bretagne(s) World Sounds will propose concerts at Le
Quartz and Le Vauban from the 17th to the 19th of November.

We will be very pleased to welcome you on this occasion, which is thought as a
moment for exchange and sharing.
