Hi All
At last I have established a new time and venue for the Jazz Jam - it
will be every 4th Wednesday at The Global Cafe in Reading, beginning on
Wednesday 25th November.
House band 8pm, Jam 9-11pm.
For those who have not been before the venue is here:
http://www.risc.org.uk/map/RISC_location.pdf
There is a car park at the rear (although you can park on the road
outside) which is accessed by driving past the cafe and taking the next
left (South Street), then take the first left and follow the road round
and up the ramp.
There is a great Etheopian restaurant - Tutu's - operating at the Global
until 9pm.
More info as usual: www.jazzjam.wordpress.com
hope you can make it.
regards
Jamie
Subject: Django Reinhardt's 100th Birthday festival at Le Quecumbar: 17-25 January 2010
Hello,
In January 2010, a unique festival of Gypsy Jazz will take place at Le Quecumbar, Battersea, to celebrate the centenary of the birth of the great Django Reinhardt.
This is a marvellous opportunity to hear some of the most amazing gypsy jazz guitarists in an intimate setting. I would encourage you to look through the list of artists performing (below), select the events you would like to attend, and get your reservations in early. Remember – only 70 tickets will be sold for each concert!
Please forward this email to friends who may be interested.
Best regards,
Charles Alexander

Django Reinhardt's 100th Birthday festival at Le Quecumbar, Battersea:
17-25 January 2010
A nine-day festival of concerts and workshops featuring Europe’s finest Gypsy and non-Gypsy musicians will be the biggest assemblage ever of Gypsy Swing talent in the UK.
The International Gypsy Swing Guitar Festival celebrates the life of the founder of Gypsy swing, Django Reinhardt, who generated musical waves around the globe that today still influence the thousands of guitarists worldwide who follow in his legendary footsteps.
Each performance will take the form of a private concert with audience members able to hear the guitar performed acoustically in an intimate period environment and even meet with performers after the show.
Sylvia Rushbrooke, the festival organiser, commented: “Django Reinhardt’s music is as fresh today as it was 80 years ago. When people hear this music performed live in the intimate setting of a Parisian café – or, even better still – round a camp fire, they find themselves irresistibly seduced by the fierce sweetness of the music, and the verve and skill of its players.”
The festival is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and will take place at Le QuecumBar & Brasserie, the world famous home of Gypsy Swing in London. With its intimate 1930s Parisian pre-war atmosphere, it seats 65 people, it makes the perfect and natural environment to hear and see this music and its performers as it would have been experienced in Paris cafes at the time Django played.

Southampton Musicians Cooperative Big Band. And of course heard many great

Subject: [newburyjazzplatform] Jazz Jam update news
Hello All
My sincere apologies for the length of time since my last communication.
So, the big news is that I have decided to find a new venue for the jam session - hence the current lay off. I have got a new venue in the pipeline in Reading which has been agreed in principle - I just need to organise details and I will be able to announce it.
No TVs or Fruit machines!
I hope you will all still be able to continue to support the jam in it's new home and that the break we've had has not put you all off!

Subject: Petition to the P.M. to exempt small gigs from licensing requirements
Hello,
As you may know, the Government recently turned down the recommendation of the Committee for Culture, Media and Sport to exempt music venues of 200 capacity or less from the provisions of the Licensing Act 2003, that require them to be licensed for live music events.
The Number 10 live music petition calling on the Prime Minister to implement new entertainment licensing exemptions for small gigs reached 6,000 signatures this morning: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/livemusicevents/
In just over three weeks it has risen to 23rd in the list of over 5,000 petitions on the Number 10 website. But many more signatures are needed if the petition is to make an impact on the press and politicians. If you haven't already signed, please consider signing and circulating the petition link.
The Licensing Act 2003 was a dog’s dinner with regard to its treatment of live music. For reasons that the Government has never explained, widescreen television in pubs was not subjected to the licensing regime that it imposed on live music. There was in fact no requirement to license music in the first place, as Local Authorities already had sufficient powers to deal with issues of public disorder or overcrowding and any other perceived perils. The truth is that the Government did not know what they were doing or why and their advisors at the DCMS were equally ignorant.
Do please take three or four minutes to sign the petition. Then please forward this email to all your music-loving friends and colleagues.

Winners of the German Record Critics’ Award and the biggest surprise of the 2006 Berlin Jazz Festival, the radio.string.quartet are a sensation and come to Windsor as part of a eagerly anticipated UK tour.
The story of radio.string.quartet began in 2000, when Austrian composer/accordionist Klaus Paier asked Bernie Mallinger to put together a string quartet for his CD ‘Moviemento’. The CD was nominated for the prestigious Amadeus Award, the Moviemento string quartet became increasingly in demand and thus the radio.string.quartet was born.
The quartet are a group of musicians who bring an unparalleled energy to the stage. They are the new bastions of Vienna’s austere musical tradition, representing centuries of excellence and infusing this with a new and vital heartbeat, keeping Europe’s undisputed capital of music’s rich tradition alive in a refreshingly unconventional way.
Adapting Mahavishnu Orchestra founder John McLaughlin's compositions, radio.string.quartet honours the spirit of the group, successfully reinventing it to become something challenging and unique.
'The quartet not only captures Mahavishnu Orchestra's dynamics, complexity and sometimes reckless fury, but its improvisational aspect as well. This is no polite string quartet; it's as much a take-no-prisoners ensemble as the group it references.'(www.allaboutjazz.com)
'The group quickly established how effectively Asja Valcic's cello could provide both a drumlike drive and a thumping bassline, while violinists Bernie Mallinger and Johannes Dickbauer and viola player Cynthia Liao soared over it." (Guardian)
This sensational group are sell-out favourites at Jazz Festivals around the globe. We catch them between their shows in Paris and London, after which they headline The Henley Festival.
Concert begins at 9pm. Tickets: £12 GA, £10 Concs, £9 Mem

Subject: Alex Wilson Afro Cuban Workshop Sun 5th July
Dear All
Just to confirm details for the next Alex Wilson Afro Cuban workshop at South Hill Park (Terrace Room) Sun 5th July.
Suggest you aim to get to the Arts Centre for 10:45. The building officially opens at 11:00 but you can usually move gear in 15 mins or so before that. We will start at 11:30 (but will need to be prompt getting gear in and setting up to achieve that).
Aim is to work on a few songs during the day and at 16:00 give a brief performance on the Terrace (just through the door) to the unsuspecting drinkers at the bar. This will be a very laid back affair so no need to worry!
As before, Alex will bring a few afro cuban arrangements and we will put them together as "directed"!
The cost of this session will be £15 (which covers the whole day). As before please post a cheque for £15 made out to A K Yates (17 Pitch Place Binfield, Bracknell Berkshire RG42 4BP) ASAP to confirm your place.
Looking forward to seeing you all again!
Regards
Alan
PS We are short of a keyboard player and some trumpets hence copying in some players of these instruments above. Reply to me if you fancy it - you would be more than welcome!
PPS Estelle Johnson: Copying in case Robin or Oliver happen to be free and fancy it
Just a reminder that if you're not doing anything at lunchtime tomorrow (17 May) you have a chance to hear the amazing Nigel Price on guitar at the Sun Inn Chobham (free admission). There are still a couple of tables available for Sunday lunch (please phone 01276 857112 to book).
