Subject: T-Rex charity gig at Firestation Arts Centre (Windsor) : Sat 9 May 8pm - 11pm
Dear all
Think I may have already sent you a note about this. Just wanted to let you know about this charity gig I have organised for the charity, East to West Trust, I am working with. Would be great if you were able to support us. It is being advertised on facebook & Mark Bolam fan club websites this weekend so it is recommended to buy tickets asap if you want to come.
There are 170 seats in total, if you want to get tickets you need to click on the link to E2W website below click through the link where it says 'To book your ticket please click here!' Cost is Ł11. Alternatively you can ring the Firestation direct on 01753 866865.
Note that the Firestation Arts Centre website is www.firestationartscentre.com. 'Info/getting here' gives you full directions on how to get to the venue. Best place to park is in the car park behind Windsor college which is only a few minutes down the road on the same side. It is free to park there in the evening.
Info about the gig Bill Legend, drummer from the definitive T-Rex line-up of the early 1970’s, will be at the Firestation Centre for Arts and Culture, Windsor, for an evening of music, questions and an insight into his life, all in aid of the great work done by the East to West Trust.
Bill and his band will be playing a mixture of T-Rex hits, classic covers and a selection of contemporary gospel music. He will also be talking about his life, his faith and how working with community projects in California has become inspirational to those working closer to home with projects such as the east to west. Would be lovely to see you, hope you can make it.
Sorry won’t be there Friday but need
to talk to you about the RAFA. Maybe you’d like to call Adam on 01635 47172
to hear the latest news. I’m off to Leeds now.
Gail.

Jazz Platform 17 April
Hi All
We have confirmation that we can have the NJP at Northcroft
next Friday (probably for the last time)
Hope to see you there

Although this coming Friday is the second in the month we WON'T be having an NJP then since it's Good Friday.
We plan for it to happen the following week - 17 April - but haven't actually got confirmation from Northcroft yet. Watch this space.
After much discussion we've decided to try moving the venue to the Football Club (where NJP was some time ago) and also we are going to try changing the night of the week to Tuesday. The Football club have agreed in principle but we haven't yet confirmed the first date there, which we hope will be Tuesday 12 May. Watch this space again. I know some people much prefer Friday, but others say it's the one night they can't make (especially musicians who have gigs). We'll treat it as an experiment and see how it goes.
Just to let you all know that, contrary to my previous email, the Chobham Jam IS BACK ON. Simon writes:
"Excellent news! We've just heard that the new manager of the Sun Inn in Chobham is keen to continue with the jazz events we've got going. We will therefore be able to continue the Wednesday night jam (7:30 - 10:30 pm) every 3rd Wednesday of the month, and the new Sunday lunchtime performance (from 12:30 pm) every 3rd Sunday.
Hope to see you for our usual jam night on Wednesday 15 April (with guest singer Jenny Green) and for the launch of our Sunday lunchtime jazz with the superb Tony Woods on alto on Sunday 19 April (free admission - please phone 01276 857112 to book a table for Sunday lunch).
Please tell your friends. It would be great to have a good turn-out, to show Dale the new manager that deciding to keep the jazz going was definitely the right decision!

Dear All
I have just received the following sorry news from the manager of the Sun Inn Chobham (see below). I am sad to say this means we will have to cancel the jam session planned for 15 April, and doubly disappointed that we will be unable to launch our Sunday lunch jazz series with guest star Tony Woods on 19 April. We had also provisionally booked Nigel Price for May and Tim Collinson for June....
These are very tough times for publicans and I really feel for Lyn and Frank having to leave the Sun so abruptly. Please join me in thanking them for the support they've given our jazz sessions since the summer, and wish them well in the future.
We will of course not let the matter rest there. We hope to be able to talk to the new managers at the Sun after they have taken over, to see if they are interested in continuing the jazz events. We will also look around for an alternative venue. If any one knows of anywhere promising, please let me know.
Please help us spread this news so people don't turn up expecting to hear jazz on the 15th / 19th. We will keep you posted on further developments.
Disappointed, but hopeful we can sort out another solution quickly to keep the Chobham jam going...
I have to cancel all further Jazz sessions at the Pub with immediate effect as Frank and I will be leaving in the middle of April due to Financial reasons. I have no idea who is coming into the Pub to run it so are unable to tell you if the arrangement you have with us will suit them.
I am very sorry for this and any incontinence this might cause you.

From 12:30 pm on Sunday 19 April the superb alto sax player Tony Woods is playing jazz standards at the Sun Inn, Chobham with the house band (Simon Cook piano, Andy Masters bass, Mike Goff drums). Admission is free. Please phone 01276 857112 to reserve a table for Sunday lunch.
Tony Woods is always inspiring to listen to, with his passionate, lyrical, inventive playing and hauntingly beautiful sound. Please visit www.tonywoods.org for more information on him as an artist, composer and educator. We are delighted to welcome Tony to front the band at the first of our Sunday lunchtime performances at the Sun.
We are hoping that if we have a decent turnout on 19 April, the pub will be willing to establish Sunday lunchtime jazz as a regular monthly event, inviting a variety of different professionals as star guests. Please come and listen, and bring your friends: in these difficult times jazz musicians and publicans deserve your support!

Thanks to the many of you who attended the jam on Sunday - it was great to see what has been the best turn out so far for the anniversary session. We had a lot of great playing and more bass players than I've ever seen in one place (you can never get one when you need one and then 6 come along all at once).
Dear Friends
Find below details of an event I'm trying to get set up at short notice!
If you would like to attend such an event please shout.
Alan
Dear All
I discovered yesterday that Alex Wilson is in Bracknell on Sat 28th March. So
what I hear you say! - well Alex is a jazz pianist of great renown and also an
authority on Afro Cuban music and I have attended a workshop on Cuban music that
he gives on two occasions and to put it bluntly they have been brilliant. I
have contacted Alex and asked him if he could deliver this workshop for us on
28th March and he says he can.
I can't recommend Alex highly enough in this regard - look here for other
credentials http://www.alexwilson.net/education.htm.
The 2 hour workshop goes like this.
First 30 minutes Alex plays some examples of Cuban Music showing different
styles and how it has evolved from its roots.
Second 1.5 hours we make a salsa band. Start by internalising the Afro Cuban
clave then layer percussion, bass, piano and horn(brass or woodwind)parts/rhythm
on top. We'll learn an Afro Cuban standard (parts available if you need them
but generally they are simple enough to learn by ear). Finally shake the
building to its foundation with an ad-hoc performance!
There are some challenges though. We would need to charge participants to cover
costs. I'm putting this at Ł20 - which I'd need to collect in advance. If we
get enough participants that price will come down and there would be a rebate.
Timing is also a bit tricky. The 28th is a Music Centre Saturday and there are
concerts for some of the student bands in the afternoon. Because of constraints
in Alex's schedule we'd have to do the workshop between 13:00 and 15:15
(allowing for short break in the middle). Location will either be the Bracknell
OLC or South Hill Park (TBC).
In terms of instruments we would need people to play hand percussion (guiro,
claves, congas, shakers etc) and timbales (I have a pair of these). Traditional
Afro Cuban line up doesnt have a drum kit. Need a bass player (electric or
acoustic) and piano player. The music particularly suits brass, sax, flutes but
any wind instrument can be used.
It would be really fantastic if we could take advantage of this
opportunity - I can't stress how much fun it is - even if you've never
encountered Cuban music before. You won't get a better opportunity without
going to Havana!
If you'd be up for this and it fits your schedule can you let me know ASAP as I
would need to confirm arrangement fast!
Thanks
Alan
Next jam session at The Two Poplars (118 Finchampstead Rd, Wokingham, BerkshireRG41 2NU) is booked for Sunday 15th February at 6:30pm, finishing at 9:30pm.
Just a reminder of the Jazz Jam at the Two Poplars in Wokingham this Sunday (25th Jan) from 6:30pm-9:30pm.
Why not go and see the Stuart Henderson Quintet (great band) at the Retreat in Reading (3pm-5pm), have a bite to eat and come down to the jam at 6:30? A full day of Jazz!

Richard and Julie will be

Hi Peter,
I was speaking to the manager's wife at The Bowlers Arms which is on the
southern edge of Newbury.
http://www.falklandcc.co.uk/BowlersArms/b-arms1.shtml
She used to play trombone at school and has started to practice again. So
she has an interest in music. I mentioned NJP and she seemed interested as
Monday and Sunday evenings are very quiet there.
I wasn't able to discuss hosting NJP in detail but I felt that she was not
thinking about hiring the room ie it could well be free.
The Bowlers is a cricket club so I would avoid using the place on a Sunday
in Summer as the room will not be available if there is a game on. That
restricts your use to a Monday.
If you are interested you can call Tracey on 01635 47658.
Regards
George

Having played a few gigs with these noise limiters destroying the ambience (even an acoustic kick-drum sets them off), I urge you to sign the petition link below - only takes a few seconds! Thanks - Paul
Another piece of proposed legislation that will adversely affect live music in the UK:
It has been brought to attention that the government wish to consider it a legal requirement in the new tax year to introduce laws insisting anyone applying or re-applying for an entertainment license must have a noise control device fitted to the venue. This will be the final NAIL for ALL entertainment in the UK as the level at which these devices CUT you off is dreadfully low and damaging.
PLEASE DO NOT INTRODUCE THIS LAW, WE LOVE LIVE MUSIC!

Hi Peter
I'm really sorry to hear that NJP is struggling - I'm really
interested in coming along to the sessions, and joined the Yahoo
group a while ago with the intention of joining in sooner, but
haven't made it just yet.
Could you let me know when the next one will be after 9 Jan (sadly I
can't make it this week)? I play tenor sax, haven't played for a few
months since (relocating to Newbury), but used to play regularly with
various groups. I'd say I'm sort of intermediate level.
I really hope NJP continues and I get a chance to join in!
Kind regards.

Other news - we are now on Facebook! If you are too, please join the group berkshire jazz jam (search with that phrase and it will come up). It's an opportunity to have comments from people and for people to post other jam sessions (please do - all those who run one!) Not to mention networking.

Hi Dave
Joining up with the unplugged lot sounds a good idea, at least if they manage to get their venue sorted out - I understand they're thriving. The only trouble I foresee is that some of us (like you and me!) can't really play with a full line-up without amplification, and I suppose the unplugged people would take some convincing to change their rules. Who would need to be persuaded? Presumably 'Adam' - have you got his details?

Why not join forces with the Newbury Unplugged at the RAFA (cheap beer)...
Hi Folks, Happy New Year and all that.
Very much hoping that Unplugged will be back on Friday February 6th 2009. News soon……
Rafa Hall campaign is going well – we’d still like to hear from people interested in putting on community and arts events and activities at the Rafa now and in the future.
You can get in touch about that or simply to express your support at www.newburynewhall.com
Also, please get in touch if you are interested in my almost legendary over-18 drama group, Monday nights, from the beginning of Feb, hopefully at the Rafa as well.

Thanks for your input. I don't think there should be any problem in accepting less experienced people too. I'm interested that Friday is bad for you and a couple of other people (hope you can make it this Friday though!)

Peter,
I know I have frequently said I'm coming and then not appeared, but..... I really think I'll be there this week. It's probably cheeky of me to comment on your suggestions after months of absence but I do think the venue lacks atmosphere (as well as decent beer). Encouraging experienced musicians to be there would be good as long as less experienced ones are not squeezed out. My prolonged absence seems to suggest that Friday isn't a good night and any other would be better.

I've heard the workshops suggestion before (maybe they even had them before my time, not sure) and it sounds promising if we could get enough people along to make it worthwhile. I expect there are several people capable of running one.
I don't really have strong feelings about whether the 'gig' or the jam should be first. My main concern is whether we could find enough (good enough) people to do a gig for free, once the novelty wears off. That's why I've asked for volunteers, to test the water.

Hi peter,
i have been a member for a few months - but only managed to get to one session last year. But should be coming a long this fri - new years resolutions and all that.
my 2 pence worth ... Friday is a difficult day for me as I'm often away at the weekend - and usually leave on fri lunch.
i'm an intermediate level player - but not experienced in group playing and not really sure where to start - maybe do 1/2 hour occasional workshop prior to the main session ?
Splitting the evening up might be a good idea ... but would it make sense to have the jam sessions first ?
cheers

It has been suggested that we should arrange that each month a group of the more experienced musicians take the first part of the evening as a semi-formal gig, with a jam to follow. Is this a good idea, and is it practical? Any volunteers (obviously we couldn't pay)?
We have another session next Friday 9 January so please come along and support it. The NJP has given a lot of people a lot of fun and encouraged a lot of beginners, it would be such a pity if it folded.

Hi All
Sorry to say that the NJP is on life-support at the moment. The last two months hardly anybody came and the 'committee' have been discussing whether it can continue in the same form. Any suggestions about changes which may help would be most welcome.
