Trio Mio - Pigeon Folk Pieces
The second effort by the Danish tro led by violinist Kristine Heeboll
with Jens Ulvsand on bouzouki and guitar and Nikolaj Busk on piano and
accordion. A touch of the contemporary avant garde meets the deeply
traditional folk in a recording that is highly recommended.

Kriya - Kriya
Pauliina Lerche's accordion experiments and her guitarist partner
Peter Lerche have formed Kriya (work or process in Sanskrit), the
culmination of thier explorations in solo. The members of Kriya come
from various musical backgrounds; Finnish traditional music, rock and
the classical Indian (Hindustani) tradition.

Nordafjells - General
Fine Norwegian quartet of accordions, fiddle and bass moves in a
similar circle to Finland's JPP, playing traditional dance music with
new energy, verve and a bit of humor. There's no fusion or flash, just
solid musicianship offered for the simple joy of playing the tunes.

Varttina - Miero
Värttinä's 2006 release is strong, almost agressive, full-throated and
full-throttle, with a powerful band as important as the frontline of
singers. This RealWorld production has everything this Finnish band
always promises but often fails to deliver.

Jouko Kyhala - Saalas
Harmonica master Jouko Kyhälä (of the harmonica quartet Svang ) is
joined by Piia Kleemola (violin), Pekka Lehti (bass), Janne
Lappalainen from Varttina (bouzoki) and Abdissa Assefa (percussion)
for a wide ranging musical tour. Quirky, clver and highly recommended.

Gunner Friis - Kalejdoskop
Gunner Friis is considered a pearl among pearls of Danish folk
musicians, a fiddler who still regularly plays traditional music for
dances around the country. Kaleidoscope presents a series of
recordings, some solo, most with some of the musicians who hold him in
high esteem. The CD was created as a gift to Gunner Friis on his 60th
birthday in 2005.

Royst - Nordic Initiative
Røyst is a vocal quartet established in Leeds, England by four
Norwegian singers - Kari Nergaard Bleivik, Therese Ulvan, Cecilie
Giskemo and Maria Jardardottir - who perform original music written
and arranged by the members of the group. The repetoire includes a
wide-ranging group of styles - traditional Norwegian folk music, vocal
jazz, improvisation in a traditional folk vein as well as avant garde
free improv, interpretations of ethnic music from around the world and
classical art music. The cohesion lies in the unique quality of the
voices together, their interest in both tradition and experimentation,
and their simple, joyous exhuberance.

Einar Londal - Londalsspel - Hardingfele
Einar Løndal is a contemporary old master of the Norwegian hardingfele
(hardangar fiddle) whose family has pretty much defined one of the
recognized regional styles of playing. He presents 17 traditional
tunes, recorded by Norwegian national radio NRK. The audio includes
some of his comments on the tunes (in Norwegian, translated into
English in the accompanying booklet).

Furnes, Holsen and Sandal - Hardingfele
Archival recordings of three oldtime fiddlers from Norway - Nils
Furnes (1901-1990), Johannes Holsen (1910-1992) and Knut Sandal
(1913-1964) - recorded by Norwegian national radio NRK.

Back in stock:
Haugaard and Hoirup - Gaestebud/Feast
Any time violinist Harald Haugaard and guitarist Morten Alfred Høirup
get together is an event. Their 2005 release Gæstebud is no exception.
The intuitive timing of musical brothers, the impeccable musicianship,
the excellent choice of material are all evident in this, their 4th
recording together. Highly recommended.
