Moldestad, Mjolsnes, Hogemo - Gamaltnymalt
Three outstanding fiddlers. Sigrid Moldestad, Einar Mjølsnes and Håkon
Høgemo are essential performers of the Norwegian fiddle tradition, and
here they present their music on the 5-string hardingfele (hardangar
fiddle), creating a potent and formidable sound. This recording was
awarded the Norwegian 'Spellmannprisen' in 2005.
Onkelfolke - Kasta Beinet
Onkelfolke is another good example of the new-folk-wave in
contemporary Norway. They play new compositions based on the
traditions of their home regions of Nordmøre, Rogaland and Vest-Agder,
sometimes combining regional influences into something genuinely new
and unique to modern Norway. Folk songs, ballads, springar, pols and
halling dance tunes find a new lift in the skilled hands of these
musicians playing accordion, flute, guitar, hardinfele, percussion and
voices.
Karl Seglem - Femstein
Available again! Norwegian experimental folk, with Karl Seglem, tenor
saxophone, goat horns; Håkon Høgemo, hardanger fiddle; Gjermund
Silset, bass; Helge A. Norbakken, drums, percussion (Norwegian
edition, now available)
Skogumsbrorne - Slattespel fra Gudbrandsdalen
Norwegian ensemble Skogumsbrørne revives the music of some classic
regional fiddle styles by the brothers Skogum
Dram (Ask-Upmark and Rynefors) - Dråm
Musicians Erik Ask-Upmark and Anna Rynefors are both riksspelmän and
combine ancient instruments to create new sounds with their
combination of nyckelharpa, Celtic harp with Swedish and medieval
bagpipes providing the endless dråm (drone) that gives them their name.
Pauliina Lerche - Malanja
The Finnish multi-instrumentalist (vocals, accordion, kantele, violin
and deltar) creates original music, from the tradition, and combines
her strong roots with a more modern, global approach on thios 2006
release. Besides accordions and acoustic guitars, instruments featured
on the record include the vibraphone, kaval, low whistle, Estonian
bagpipes, dobro, Carnatic violin and the recording debut of the
deltar, a harp-like instrument designed by an Iraqi-born acoustics
professor. Malanja is a strong follow-up to her wonderful Katrilli CD
of 2004.
