Ale Moller Band - Djef Djel
Nothing that has ever come from the hands of Ale Möller has been
anything less than brilliant, in my opinion, and this one continues
his exploration of the Swedish ethos in the global continuum. This
time around, it is just the band, a now well-seasoned sextet of
musicians from all over the planet, in sync with each other's ideas
and exploring new applications of their roots in Sweden,
Greece,Mexico, Canada and Senegal. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Lena Willemark - Alvdalens Elektriska
One of Sweden's most important artists, Lena Willemark offers her 2006
vision of the folk music of Sweden with her return to her home region
of Älvdalens. In spite of the title, this is an acoustic work, with her
voice and violin joined by a stellar cast of musicians including Leo
Svensson (cello), Mikael Augustsson (accordions and bandoneon), Haci
Ahmed Tekbilek (ney), Mikael Marin (viola). Highly recommended!
Sussie Nielson - Pigens Morgen
The Norwegian singer's latest release of Norwegian and Irish folk
songs, accompanied by piano, bass, harp, violin, bouzuki, bagpies, etc.
Kristian Blak and Yggdrasil - Risastova
The ensemble Yggdrasil embarks on its 25th year with an ensemble of
musicians from Faroe isalnds and Estonia, and featuring Kari
Sverrisson. They perform modern interpretations of traditional Faroese
skjaldurs, ballads & hymns. There are also unusual compositions by
Kristian Blak.
Helene Blum - En Sød Og Liflig Klang
Folk and modern interpretations of Jule music old and new by the
Danish singer, accompanied by Harald Haugaard (who also produced the
recordings), with Ditte Fromseier, Harald Haugaard, Kirstine Elise
Pedersen, lea Havelund, Mikkel Bøggild, Sune Hånsbæk, Torben Sminge,
Hans Mydtskov, Karen Mose, Jullie Hjetland, Kristian Stærke on
violins, cello, guitar and vocals. One of the best Christmas
recordings I have heard in a while. Highly recommended.
Gjallarhorn - Rimfaxe
The new CD (2006) from this innovative and agressively creative
Finnish new-roots ensemble

Waterson:Carthy - Holy Heathens and The Old Green Man
In 1965 The Watersons released the landmark album Frost and Fire - A
Calendar of Ritual Magical Songs. This new recording returns to the
themes, with resonant ensemble singing bolstered by The Devil's
Interval, a young and exciting new vocal trio of Lauren McCormick,
Emily Portman and Jim Causely, and accompanied by guitar, fiddle,
mandolin, brass and percussion. Superb!
la bergere - fi de l'eau
The second recording by la bergère is again a poetic vision, created
by the trio of Sylvie Berger (voice), Julien Biget (guitar, bouzouki,
mandolin, percussion, voice), and Emmanuel Pariselle (accordion
diatonique, concertina, flute, voice), joined by a wonderful list of
guests including Gilles Chabenat, Gabriel Yacoub and Alain Bruel.
Highly recommended, as was their first!
Kristi Stassinopoulou and Stathis Kalyviotis - Taxidoscopio
These Greek artists are producing global pop without peer, mixing
local roots with international sounds and modern technology to create,
over the course of the last few years, a completely unique aural
pallette that relates to almost no one else.
