cdRoots - New Nordic Roots

Lots of Danes, and more

http://www.cdroots.com

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Valravn - Koder på snor
The title ("Codes on a string") is inspired by the science of 'string theory' -
that all forces and particles in the universe are connected. This second album by
the band features original compositions based on tradition. Faroese singer Anna
Katrin Egilstrøð still leads with her melancholic and longing Nordic tone as a
starting point, and the band (from Denmark, Swizterland and Ecuador, using
violins, violas, hurdy-gurdy, percussion and keyboards) offers power and space
in fair measure to support her vision and sound.

Kefir Kvartet - Kefir
Unusual new music produced in a folk-rooted tradition, but a full out experiment
in mixing unique new sounds with the old. Instruments include bouzouki (Greek
and irish), guitar, percussion, violin, melodica, cittern and bass. Highly
recommended for the adventurous ear.

Karl Skaarup with Kristian Bugge - Musician
Traditional Danish folk music presented by an 85 year old master on the
accordion, accompanied by fiddle

Anja Praest Mikkelsen - Hemmeligheden / The Secret
Clarinetist from Phonix, Anja Præst Mikkelsen, stands out front for the first
time on her own recording, although she is joined by fellow band members and
other great musicians form the new folk movement in Denmark: Sigurd Hockings'
Nikolaj Busk, Jesper Vinther, Ditte Fromseier Mortensen, Andreas Tophøj, Jakob
Holdensen, Peter Sejersen, Rikke Lundorff, Kirstine Elise Pedersen, Rasmus
Henriksen, Jesper Falch and Jes Kroman.

String Sisters - Live
Top fiddlers from the Celtic and Scandinavian traditions gather for a show at
Glasgow's Celtic Connections Festival. Featuring Annbjorg Lien, Catriona
MacDonald, Liz Carroll, Liz Knowles, Mairead ni Mhaonaigh, and Emma Hardelin.
Solo, in various groupings, and sometimes backed by piano, bass, guitar or
percussion. Highly recommended!

Serras - Ø
The fourth Serras album is entitled "Ø" - the Danish word for island. The new CD
was composed and recorded in the hall of an old hotel. The surroundings, the
tranquility and a very relaxed mood have had a huge impact upon the music, far
more subdued compared to earlier albums. But there is still music here with the
powerful expression that has always been their trademark. The band is growing
up, developing subtlty and grace along with power and energy. Sune Rahbek :
Drums, Harald Haugaard : Fiddle, Sune Hånsbæk : Guitar, Mads Riishede : Bass,
Hans Mydtskov : Saxophone, Torben Sminge : Sound engineer

Trio THG - Tungen ud af vinduet
The trio of Andreas Tophoj on violin, Sigurd Hockings on guitar, and Michael
Graubaek on violin stick their "Tongue Out of the Window" on this excellent new
folk disc from Denmark.

Fin Alfred - Sange fra min vandring
Songs from my Travels: 60 years of singing traditional Danish songs and ballads"
is a wonderful presentation of classic folk songs from Denmark. In 2009 Fin
Alfred is celebrating his 60th anniversary as a traditional singer by releasing
his 20th album and by touring in Denmark with his son, guitarist Morten Alfred
Høirup. They are accompanied on the CD by Anders Hofset (bass) and Claus Fossing
(drums).

TrioTinus - Trio Tinus
Traditional Danish dance music inspired by the legendary dance band Æ'Tinusser.
The trio is Carl Erik Lundgaard: cromatic accordion, mouth organ; Anders
Ringgaard: trombone and Vagn Dahl Hansen: piano.

Zenobia - Midnat
Zenobia is a Danish folktrio that plays well-known Danish folksongs and original
compositions. With varied backgrounds in folk, jazz, popular song, Argentine
tango, the trio of Louise Støjberg - vocal; Mette Kathrine Jensen - accordion;
and Charlotte Støjberg - piano offer a unique and subtle new music.

Hal Parfitt-Murray and Nikolaj Busk - Hal and Nikolaj
14 tracks of decidedly "new folk" from Denmark, played by two great musicians on
violin, viola, mandolin, five-string guitar, voice, feet, grand piano, harmonium
and accordion

Gabriel Yacoub - de la nature des choses
It took seven years for this French artist to compose and record an all new
studio work, but the wait is always worth it when you have an artist of such
high caliber. Joined by a wonderful ensemble (including Gilles Chabenat, Yannick
Hardouin, Julien Biget and many more), his voice is surrounded by deep folk
roots and modern sounds, all to the service of 14 rich and marvelous songs. As
you might suspect from this description, it comes highly recommended!

Le Vent du Nord - La Part du Feu
The Silk Road Project - Off The Map

2008 marked Värttinä's 25th year as a band. The CD includes twenty-two tracks
taken from all their eleven albums and the Archive Live DVD plus an unreleased
song "Vipinäveet" recorded during the sessions for their album Miero. The "25"
album also features lyrics, fotos from their entire career and deluxe,
four-color, digipak design with 24 page booklet.
-----------------------------------

and NQN (not quite Nordic)

QQQ
Unpacking The Trailer

QQQ unspools folk music from a place where bluegrass, Norwegian wedding marches,
progressive rock, and post-minimalism have merged into a funky, engaging hybrid.
Dan Trueman plays the Hardanger fiddle, Monica Mugan is on classical guitar,
Beth Meyers on viola and Jason Treuting does the drums and percussion. It is a
wild and decidedly non-traditional mix, yet the music still sounds ancient and
rooted.

-------------------------------------

Kraja
Under Himmelens Fäste

Swedish vocalists Linnea Nilsson, Eva Lestander, Lisa Lestander and Frida
Johansson are from Umeå in Sweden. Their unique four part harmony song
arrangements and repertoire comprise traditional Swedish folk songs, love songs,
humorous songs, dance lilts and chorales, in addition to some material of their
own. The word 'Kraja' is in the Sami language and means "the place you long
for". Critics and audiences have warmly embraced Kraja and the group has enjoyed
performing for audiences all over Sweden, and in Germany, Finland, Norway,
Denmark, Ukraine and Estonia. For this 2008 recording the ensemble has chosen to
focus on some of Sweden's most cherished folksongs.

Scottish songwriter/ producer Bob Melrose

Annbjorg Lien - Waltz with Me
Norwegian hardanger fiddler and composer Annbjørg Lien was
commissioned last year to compose new music for the prestigious
Telemark Festival in Bø, Norway. She responded with an ensemble of
Bruce Molsky on violin and vocals, Christine Hanson on cello and
Mikael Marin on viola, then wrote a varied set of tradition-based
tunes and songs that reflect an eclectic attitude. The strong
chemistry shared by members of the group is apparent on each and every
track on ths lovely recording of new Nordic music.

Selsolater - Låter fra Selsø
New traditional folk music, originating from the bank of Selsø Lake,
west of Copenhagen, Denmark. Svend Erik Pedersen is inspired by the
beautiful nature surrounding thearea. The changing colors during the
day and throughout the year, as well as the constant sounds from the
rich bird life in the lake area, are great sources of inspiration. In
Selsølåter the modern and traditional tunes from Danish, Nordic and
Irish folk music meet and intertwine.Frankly all good tunes and
fiddlers mature by heart. The band members of Selsølåter are all
connected to Lirum Larum and the very traditional and living folk

is joine di the band by an group of great violins, , guitar, bass,
organ and percussion.

Carl Erik Lundgaard - Yderland

and produced in cooperation with bassist Mads Riishede. The music is
expressive, and has stories to tell, both serious and humorous.

Baltic Crossing - Baltic Crossing
Baltic Crossing use their strong affinity for old dance music and
respect for each others traditions to bring a new youthful energy to
the folk music of Europe. Wherever they meet, at least one has to
cross the Baltic Sea. The ensemble is Kristian Bugge (DK) on violin;
Antti Jarvela (FI) on acocustic bass, mandolin, banjo; Esko Jarvela
(FI) on violin, viola; Andy May (UK) on Northumbrian and Uilleann
pipes and piano and Ian Stephenson (UK) on guitar, melodeon.

Frigg - Economy Class
Frigg return with their third studio album, advancing their place as
young leaders of the Nordic roots music movement. Frigg continue to
forge a unique concoction of string music from many cultures through
the filter of their native traditions of Finland and Norway. With
elements of Appalachian, Celtic, and Eastern European folk influences,
this band of fiddles, bass, guiatar, mandolin and percussion delivers
another brilliant collection.

Zegar Zivi - Zegar Zivi (Zegar Lives)
Powerful acapella group vocals, often using the wild
beating-against-drone technique of groktenje, diple playing,
goat-calling and church-bell ringing from a group of amazingly
resilient Serbian singers who've moved back to their village of Žegar
in the rocky hill-country of Dalmatia in Croatia – a region
war-shattered in the 1990s and still depopulated, but beautiful and
now peaceful - to rebuild their homes and pick up the threads of their
lives and rich musical traditions. The album's title, and the group's
name, means Žegar Lives.Recorded in Žegar in May 2007, produced by
Andrew Cronshaw in collaboration with Svetlana Spaji?. The digipak
contains a 60 page booklet with many photos and extensive notes
including the background story to the recordings (in English).

Les Witches - Manuscrit Susanne van Soldt: Danses, chansons and
psaumes des Flandres, 1599
The source of this music is Susan Van Soldt's manuscript of the end of
the 16th century, comprising dances, songs and psalms adapted to the
virginal or the harpsichord. Aged 16 when she noted in this copy-book
the pieces she probably enjoyed playing at home, Susan was a young
protestant who had to leave Flanders for England with her family at
this time of raging religious conflict between Christians. The
majority of pieces in the manuscript are reductions for the keyboard.
Contrary to what is usually the case, the Witches had therefore to
imagine, on the basis of these reductions, the «original » versions
for instrumental ensembles and hence recreate the tonal colours that
we see in Brueghel's country fairs, weddings and village feasts.
Claire Michon : flute, Freddy Eichelberger : virginal and organ, Odile
Edouard : violin, Pascale Boquet : lute, Sylvie Moquet : viola da
gamba, Mickaël Cozien : virginal, Françoise Rivalland : percussion and
rommelpot.

Dúmbala Canalla - M´enfango
A wild and rambuctious band, this Barcelona-based band combines the
traditional music of the Balkans with traditional Catalan music, swing
and klezmer, the music of the Eastern European Ashkenazi Jews. The
present a raucous festival music full of rich, often circus-like melodies.

For all you folks who heard the latest piece on Danish folk music on

recordings by the guiar./fiddle team of Haugaard and Hoirup.

New in the catalog:
Just a sampling: see all new titles at http://www.cdroots.com/new.shtml

Kristine Heeboll - 10 Point
The Danish fiddler (of Trio Mio and Phonix) steps back to the front on
her 2007 release of original tunes, backed by an impressive ensemble
from around Scandinavia: Dan Gisen Malmquist (clarinet and bass
clarinet), Peter Eget (harmonika), Ditte Fromseier (violin and
bratsch), Andreas Tophøj (violin) and Cecillie Hyldgaard (cello). The
sounds run from elegant to exhuberant, and Heebøll once again shows
that she has what it takes to bring Danish folk music to the frontline
of Nordic roots music.

Henrik Jansberg - Omnivor
The young Danish fiddler comes to 2007 with a full band and an
insatiable appetite for new musical idea. Joined by his own tourning
band of violin, viola, guitars, mandolins, banjo, drums, percussion,
nyckelharpa, dobro and doublebass with guests Christopher Davis Maack
on violin and Sonnich Lydom playing harmonica and diatonic accordion.

Duo Milla Viljamaa and Johanna Juhola - Mi Retorno
Johanna Juhola (accordion) and Milla Viljamaa (piano) are young urban
fusion-folk musicians from Finland. They began their collaboration at
the Sibelius Academy. Overall the duo's repertoire is diverse,
features idiosyncratic arranging and performing styles with influences
from tango nuevo a la Piazzolla, many kinds of jazz and the folk music
of various countries, with lost of room left for variation and
improvisation.
(Please note: this was originally listed in the catalog, ,
erroneously, under the title "Duo")

Tam Na Vulinn - Vestibule
Belgian trio Tam Nà Vulinn plays fast and loose with both tradition
and jazz, and pushes the boundaries of what they themselves call folk
music. Alexis Amette (guitars), Baptiste Argouarc'h (5 stringed
violin) and Mathieu Guyon (percussion, vibraphone) are joined on a few
tracks by guests Charles Lucas (bass) and Yannick Leblay (programming)
hint at Celtic and American roots, Flemish tradition and global pop,
ultimately producing a sound that is quite original. Fans of the great
Tesi-Valliant duo projects will find this intriquing.

------------------------------------------------------------------

New in the catalog:
Just a sampling: see all new titles at http://www.cdroots.com/new.shtml

Sanna Kurki-Suonio - Huria
Another powerful work by the singer who helped bring Hedningarna to
international fame, Huria is a follow-up to Sanna Kurki-Suoni's
acclaimed Kainuu, a duo project with Riitta Huttunen, this 2007
release pushes the boundaries of their exploration of Karelian folk
music with a stronger, more contemporary trio project, joined by
Karelian multi-instrumentalist Jari Lappalainen.

Petri Hakala - Trad.
Finnish Fiddle Tunes on Guitars and Mandolins performed by one of
Finland's great string masters, who has played with many of the
country's leading new-folk musicians including Erik Hokkanen, Maria
Kalaniemi, Ottopasuuna and the Helsinki Mandoliners.

Halogeeni - Loistava Perimä
Halogeeni is a Kokkola, Finland based trio that combines Finnish folk
music with their own trad-style tunes and songs on harmonium, mandolin
and 1- and 2-row accordions. Juha Virtanen's straightforward and
eloquent accordion playing gives a soul to Halogeeni´s music. Juha has
also composed most of the bands instrumentals. Halogeeni´s harmonium
player Anne-Mari Hakamäki and mandolin player Matti Hakamäki are the
vocalists of the trio. Old style songs sung in a peculiar way are an
essential part of Halogeeni's repertoire.

Dazibao - E40
The second release by this wonderful Belgian ensemble will surely
garner as much acclaim as their previous CD, Alma. The diatonic
accordions of Sophie Cavez and Jonathan de Neck are still in the
forefront, musically and compositionally, but this 2007 release offers
a more confident ensemble sound, a little richer in jazz roots while
still solidly enthralled the folk roots of their region. Exceptional
music from an exceptional ensemble, once again.

Polkaholix - The Great Polka Swindle
The band says: 'No Polka - no fun! Without Polka there is no TexMex,
no Merengue, no Ska, no Punk, no - I don't know what. Firstly: no
Rock'n Roll. - What, you didn't know that?' Well, they do it all...
and more, with high energy, great musicianship and lots of attitude.

Philip Glass / Leonard Cohen - Book of Longing
Based on the poetry of Leonard Cohen, a song cycle composed for
ensemble, singers, spoken word and imagery is the culmination of years
of mutual admiration between these two artists. The piece features new
music by Philip Glass that is inspired by Cohen poems and artwork. In
addition to narration by Leonard Cohen, this recording features the
composer on keyboard and longtime collaborator Michael Riesman
conducting The Philip Glass Ensemble. Glass's composition evokes the
magic in Cohen's most intimate prose with uncommon clarity. Includes a
deluxe digipack with the full libretto and Leonard Cohen's original
artwork.

Klezmic Zirkus - Vitamine K
Original compositions and traditional themes from Eastern Europe are
spiced up with jazz, classical, rock, folk and reggae to create a
copletely personal musical style. Aurélie Charneux (clarinet), Julien
De Borman (diatonic accordion), Adrien Lambinet (trombone, tuba),
Pierre Greco (double bass), and Wouter Roggemans (drums) Listen

Susanne Lundeng - Nattevak
Susanne Lundeng, Norwegian fiddler and write, has a personal style and
characteristic sound, and with her band virtually an extension of her
violin, she creates new music that is well entrenched in the Norwegian
folk music tradition. Susanne Lundeng's violin and vocals are
acommanied dby her long time band on guitars (including an
uncharacteristic slide guitar), mandolin, accordion, drums,
electronics bass and vocals. recorded at the old Vaeroy rectory in Norway.

Bellowhead - Burlesque (BACK IN STOCK!)
I have tried to tone down the prose to write this description, but
what can I do? This is a remarkable recording, a shock to the sytem.
fROOTS' Colin Erwin calls it "Astonishing!" It's Brecht meets Childe
in Copeland's backyard, chats with Coltrane and dances with brass
monkeys. This 11 piece band of notorious trad-arr hipsters (including
Spiers and Boden and Benji Kirkpatrick) plays accordions, fiddles and
such, punched into high gear by brass band and strings, and all manner
of exceptional strangeness ensues. It's all traditional, in a sense,
but like nothing you have heard before. Bonus: the package is a small,
lovely hardcover book with lyrics, photos (wild!) and more.

Oysterband - Meet You There (BACK IN STOCK!)
The new studio album by the Brit folk-rock legends, released March, 2007

------------------------------------------------------------------

New in the catalog:

Tsuumi Sound System - Hotas
The Finnish modern folk music group consists of eight musicians with
very different backgrounds. The record was made by a steady
eight-piece group known for spectacular live performances and with the
assistance of producer Roger Tallroth they bring their on-stage energy
into the studio in a way they have not done before. Highly recommended.

Frigg - Live
The Finnish-Norwegian group produces fresh Scandinavian folk fiddling
accompanied by fretted instruments, upright bass and endless energy in
this live recording made in concert in 2007.

Timo Alakotila and Johanna Juhola - Vapaassa tilassa
One of the fathers of Finnish chamber folk, pianist Timo Alakotila
joins forces with accordionist Johanna Juhola (a member of Troka among
other projects), in duets, solos and small ensemble arrangements that
include Aili Ikonen, Petri Hakala, Jouni Järvelä, Pekka Kuusisto and
Roger Tallroth. Excellent and highly recommended.

Jonas Knutsson and Horn Please - Horn Please!
Swedish folk and horn music on six saxophones, bass and percussion.
Led by veteran saxophonist/composer/arranger Jonas Knutsson, some of
the prominent younger Swedish folk musicians are presented in music
that goes from the traditional to the newly composed, and from the
strictly arranged to the wildly improvised. The horn players:
Alexandra Särström, Å sa Johansson, Hanna Wiskari, Klas Toresson,
Daniel Carlsson; plus Bengt Jonasson and Petter Berndalen on bass and
percussion. Compositions by Knutsson and traditional music from
different parts of Sweden and South India. Highly recommended

Kirjava lintu - Kirjava lintu
Kirjava Lintu's first recording contains new, original, acoustic folk
music composed to the poetry of several Finnish poets ( Helvi
Hämäläinen, Hannele Huovi, Aki Luostarinen and Lauri Pohjanpää).
Founded in 2004, the band's acoustic compositions are influenced by
Scandinavian folk music, from Swedish polskas to Finnish ballads
composed and arranged by the harmonium player Juha Kujanpää and
performed by vocalists, two violins, Swedish nyckelharpa, harmonium,
double bass and percussion.

Alamaailman Vasarat - Maahan
The 2006 release by this amazing Finnish ensemble presents a clash of
ideas from rock, folk, jazz and the avant garde, led by brass and wind
instruments and a dramatic dual-cello section. Totally unique.

Fagel Roc - Kropp och Själ
Sweden-based Fågel Roc gets its inspiration from their own home and
around the world, and the band of synth-guitar, keyboards, bass and
percussion uses an excellent pallat of Latin rhythms, Oriental
melodies, western pop, Bagdad rock, and what they call Etnoschlager.
They are vocally led by the wonderful Nadia Louis, an Iraq singer now
based in Sweden who works in many languages including Assyrian and
Swedish.

Milla Viljamaa and Johanna Juhola - Duo
Johanna Juhola (accordion) and Milla Viljamaa (piano) are young urban
fusion-folk musicians from Finland. They began their collaboration at
the Sibelius Academy. Overall the duo's repertoire is diverse,
features idiosyncratic arranging and performing styles with influences
from tango nuevo a la Piazzolla, many kinds of jazz and the folk music
of various countries, with lost of room left for variation and
improvisation.

Pekko Käppi - Jos ken pahoin uneksii
The Finnish traditional horse hair lyre called jouhikko is transformed
from the tradition by this master musician. His influences come mainly
from Finnish folk- and song tradition, but also the North American
root music as well as Russian and Siberian indigenous music . This is
Käppi's first full album, where he concentrates on the rock side of
life and starts the record with a beat that goes on like a steam
train, combining jouhikko with folkrock, song tradition from other
cultures, old gospels and psychedelia. Remarkable new music.

Frifot - Flyt
The super-group of Nordic roots music returns in 2007 with another
fantastic release. Per Gudmundson, Ale Möller and Lena Willemark
pretty well define the new folk-movement in Sweden, and this release
finds them returning to a rougher, rootsier sound. Highly recommended.

The new Frifot CD, Flyt, is now in stock!

The super-group of Nordic roots music returns in 2007 with another
fantastic release. Per Gudmundson, Ale Möller and Lena Willemark
pretty well define the new folk-movement in Sweden, and this release
finds them returning to a rougher, rootsier sound. Highly recommended.

Back in stock:
Ale Moller Band - Djef Djel
Nothing that has ever come from the hands of Ale Möller has been
anything less than brilliant, in my opinion, and this one continues
his exploration of the Swedish ethos in the global continuum. Now
well-seasoned sextet of musicians from all over the planet, they are
in sync with each other's ideas and exploring new applications of
their roots in Sweden, Greece,Mexico, Canada and Senegal.

And don't miss Ale's duo recording with Ali Bain, Beyond the Stacks

Also just in:

Lisa Rydberg & Gunnar Idenstam - Bach på Svenska
Lisa Rydberg (baroque violin) and Gunnar Idenstam (pedal organ) play
music of Bach in medleys with traditional folk tunes

Alamaailman Vasarat - Maahan
The 2006 release by this amazing Finnish ensemble (The Hammers of the
Gods) presents a clash of ideas from rock, folk, jazz and the avant
garde, led by brass and wind instruments and a dramatic dual-cello
section. Totally unique.

Mattias Perez Trio - MP3
With focus on Swedish traditional music and a great interest in making
own arrangements and composing new music, MP3 was founded three years
ago. The group has performed together in many different concerts and
dance events around Sweden and abroad, offering vibrant music played
with a lot of joy as well as expertise. The musicians: Mattias Pérez -
guitar, 12-sting guitar, mandola, mouth-harp (Jew's harp); Mia
Gustafsson - violin, voice; Nina Anderberg - violin

Le Vent Du Nord - Dans les airs
The Québec band plays innovative yet traditional music from the
region, with Simon Beaudry (guitar, vocals); Nicolas Boulerice
(hurdy-gurdy, piano, pianoaccordion, vocals); Réjean Brunet (acoustic
bass, diatonic accordion, piano, vocals); Olivier Demers (fiddle, foot
tapping, mandolin, vocals). Excellent, as they always are!

Take another look:
Afenginn - Retrograd
This unorthodox Danish small orchestra performs music that is
high-energy, humorous and virtuoso bastard-ethno music: original folk
music-based compositions containing odd meters, wildness, energy and
catchy melodies, but also moments of meditation and melancholy. Thwre
are hints of klezmer and other eastern European sounds, but the final
mix is all their own. This is one of those undiscovered gems in the
catalog… go discover it for yourself

Listen: http://www.rootsworld.com/audio/retrograd.ram
Buy: http://www.cdroots.com/tutl-afenginn.html

--------------------------------------
New in the catalog:

Jonas Simonson - Crane Dance
Simonson, one of the seminal musicians in the new Swedish folk
revival, plays like no other flutist, with his own characteristic
sting and intensity of sound and rhythm. In addition to the ordinary
flute, he alternates with various overtone flutes and wooden flutes,
as well as performing on the bass clarinet. Jonas performs with the
legendary folk-fusion ensemble Groupa and Den Fule and previously
performed with Bäsk, Kapell Frisell and the Vocal Ensemble Amanda.

Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Vasen - Anger and Marshall with Väsen
The self-dubbed "Duo" of American jazz-roots join forces with the
Swedish trio of Olov Johansson (nyckelharpa), Roger Tallroth (guitar)
and Mikael Marin (viola) for a shared look at their resppective roots.

Calle Hernmarck, Sten Andersson - Ekon fran Vallskogen
Pastoral music form Sweden, played on shepherd's pipes, goathorns,
baroque fiddles and sampler

Skromta - Grejhojta!
The name of this group from Stockholm group comes from a local
expression from Angermanland, a province in the north of Sweden,
referring to supernatural creatures like ghosts, gnomes, trolls and
vittror. The quintet is led by Matti Norlin (composer, nyckelharpa,
hurdy-gurdy, vocal) and includes violin, flute, guitar, double bass
and percussion.

Rojas Jonas - Epilog
Röjås Jonas (1921-1989) from Boda in Dalarna was one of the greatest
fiddlers in the history of Swedish traditional music. He passed away
in 1989 but even today, almost 20 years later, he remains an important
influence for many fiddlers in Sweden. Now, finally, the first
full-length album featuring Röjås Jonas is about to be released on the
label Nordic Tradition! Most of the material on the CD was recorded by
Jonas himself during the early 70's, just before the big folk music
burst, and it's a testament to the legacy of one of the great legends
of traditional music!

Aly Bain and Ale Moller - Beyond the Stacks
Scottish fiddle master Bain and Swedish multi-instrumentalist Möller
have been exploring the Nordic roots of Scottish music together for
over ten years, and this is the second CD to come from this
collaboration. Mostly fiddle/mandola duets are a culmination of Bain's
extensive research into the Scandinavian history behind so much of the
traditional music of his native Shetland Islands, and Möller's
creative arrangements. It is a masterpiece of understatement, a
relaxed session between friends who anticipate oneanother's every
phrase and respond with passion. Highly recommended.

Mattias Perez Trio - MP3
With focus on Swedish traditional music and a great interest in making
own arrangements and composing new music, MP3 was founded three years
ago. The whole group is examined from Music Universities. During the
last years the group has performed together in many different concerts
and dancing occasions around Sweden and abroad. In glowing, vibrating
music played with a lot of joy and happiness, you meet Mattias, Mia
and Nina in the group MP3.

Olov Johansson - I Lust Och Glöd
Nyckelharpa and fiddler from Vasen says of this work: 'Although I
compose new music and play in all sorts of contexts, I always return
with passion, enthusiasm and with many new influences to the
traditional tunes and catchy playing that my early heroes cultivated.
When I started thinking about this, my second solo recording, I
decided at an early stage to record it at home in my own music room...
I decided early on that this would be a simple, fun recording of
tunes, solo or duet. I have invited some of my friends in and we have
recorded tunes we like playing together... All the tunes were recorded
at home in the 'Torpet' except those with Catriona, which were
recorded at her home In Glasgow.' Guest musicians: Mikael Marin,
Markus Svensson, Kalle Almlöf and Catriona McKay

Pelle Bjornlert och Johan Hedin - Musikanter, polskor och andanter
Two style-conscious Småland musicians, Pelle Björnlert and Johan
Hedin, come together to find the new worlds to be discovered when the
two play in four part harmony using the violin d'amore and tenor
nyckelharpa in addition to a staggering number of sympathetic strings.
Småland dance music and tunes for listening, with a few Pelle
Björnlert compositions among the many traditional melodies.

Olov Johansson - I Lust Och Glöd
Always important and wonderful music form this nyckelharpist and
fiddler from Vasen, who says of this work: 'Although I compose new

catchy playing that my early heroes cultivated. When I started

Anders och Patrik - På väg
Anders Larsson (voice and mandola) and Patrik Andersson (fiddle) offer
their own unique, acoutsic arrangements of Swedish traditional music.

Jeanette Eriksson - Låtar på skånska
Solo fiddle from a young and quite talented player from Helsingborg in
the south of Sweden.

Svart Kaffee - Tretår
Mix west-Swedish fiddle with voice, harmonica and mandola to get folk
music in a blend of traditional and modern songs, polskas, waltzes and
incantations. Louise Schultz plays the fiddle and sings in Swedish
(and is a member of the ensemble RÅmantik). Simon Stålspets plays the
guitar, Nordic mandola and harmonica (he is well-known for his work
with Kalabra, Lystra and the Stockholm/Lisbon Trio). The founder of
Svart Kaffe, Jean-Pierre Yvert plays the accordion, willow flutes and
sanza. French born and bred, he become something of an ambassador for
Swedish folk music in France. Jean-Pierre is also part of the group
Nord-Sud.

Katzen Kapell - Katzen Kapell
Katzen Kapell say they have invented a musical style of their own, in
an unusual combination of instruments certainly creates an original
sound. The band is Catharina Backman on accordion and vocals; Eva
Lindal on violin, Magnus Andersson on Wurlitzer organ, keyboards and
vocals; Kjell Nordeson plays marimba and vibraphone, Lasse Lundbom on
drums and percussion and Gustaf Hielm does bass. (Originally released
in 1994)

Erika and Cecilia - Orhangen
The artists say: The word Örhänge is best described as an evergreen –
a song that is never forgotten. The tunes and songs here are precious
to us. They bring back dear memories of people we have met and places
we have visited. We met in 2002 and we hit it off musically right away
and have since then played together in many different venues in Sweden
and abroad. We come from the same region, Uppland, and most of the
music we play comes from there. This is our second CD. The first came
in 2004 and is called Pärlor (Pearls). Erika Lindgren plays the
fiddle. She grew up in Vendel, north of Uppsala. At the age of 20 and
at that time the youngest, she was honored with the title of "National
Fiddler" (Riksspelman). In 1999 she got the Viksta-Lasse scholarship
and in 2004 the Pekkos-Gustaf scholarship. Cecilia Österholm plays the
nyckelharpa. She comes from Östhammar, in the north of Uppland, where
the nyckelharpa has been played for centuries.

Jojk - The Joik Box (US only)
Reissued in June 2007: Limited number available. 3 CDs and an
excellent 310 page hardbound book explores the ancient art of joiking,
the Saami vocal art form. This set was long out of print, but a small
number recently became available. Because it is a large and heavy
package and these are some of the last ever to be available, the price
is a bit steep (185.00), but it is the essential collection, in a lot
of people's minds, and worth the price for the expert and an
educational landmark for the fan of ancient Nordic music.
US orders only online - all others please contact me before placing an
order so we can work out the shipping arrangements of this 6 pound
package!

Ellika and Solo - Abaraka! / Tack!
Abaraká!/Tack! - Thank you, indeed, Ellika and Solo for another
marvelous recording of new music from many roots. Senegalese kora
master Solo Cissokho and Swedish fiddler extraordinaire Ellika
Frissell forged a beautiful hybrid with their 2002 release, and here
they expand beyond the duo setting to add percussion, vocals and other
instruments like banjo and bass, with special appearances by American
fiddler Bruce Molsky, sumblime Senegalese vocalists Adama Cissokho and
Binta Suso and percussionist Seckou Keita (all three relatives of
Solo). The ensemble works shed new light on the duos vision, but there
are still plenty of the kora/fiddle duets that make this team so
essential. It's all damned near perfect.

Berit Opheim - Eitt Steg
Back in print! - Berit Opheim sings unaccompanied Norwegian folk songs
on this striking recording. The song traditions in Norway is called
kveding (to «kvede» is an old wordmeaning «to sing»). It´s songs
passed on for generations and deeply rooted in Norwegian musical
heritage. You can hear medieval ballads, psalms, children songs,
lullabys, callings and vocal improvisations on the album. The
recording is done in the Stave Church at Urnes, in Sogn. The church
was built about 1130 to1150, and is considered to be the oldest stave
church in Norway. It´s the first time a sound recording has been done
in the church.

Also of interest?
Floes - Belovodia
A Celtic-rooted sound drives this Flemish ensemble, in original and
dynamic songs performed by a great band and a fine lead singer.
Soetkin Collier (voice), Philip Masure (guitar, voice), Silvie Moors
(voice), Guido Piccard (cittern, guitar, épinette), and Toon Van
Mierlo (accordion, cornemuse, sax)

Ale Moller Band - Djef Djel
Nothing that has ever come from the hands of Ale Möller has been
anything less than brilliant, in my opinion, and this one continues
his exploration of the Swedish ethos in the global continuum. This
time around, it is just the band, a now well-seasoned sextet of
musicians from all over the planet, in sync with each other's ideas
and exploring new applications of their roots in Sweden,
Greece,Mexico, Canada and Senegal. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Lena Willemark - Alvdalens Elektriska
One of Sweden's most important artists, Lena Willemark offers her 2006
vision of the folk music of Sweden with her return to her home region
of Älvdalens. In spite of the title, this is an acoustic work, with her
voice and violin joined by a stellar cast of musicians including Leo
Svensson (cello), Mikael Augustsson (accordions and bandoneon), Haci
Ahmed Tekbilek (ney), Mikael Marin (viola). Highly recommended!

Sussie Nielson - Pigens Morgen
The Norwegian singer's latest release of Norwegian and Irish folk
songs, accompanied by piano, bass, harp, violin, bouzuki, bagpies, etc.

Kristian Blak and Yggdrasil - Risastova
The ensemble Yggdrasil embarks on its 25th year with an ensemble of
musicians from Faroe isalnds and Estonia, and featuring Kari
Sverrisson. They perform modern interpretations of traditional Faroese
skjaldurs, ballads & hymns. There are also unusual compositions by
Kristian Blak.

Helene Blum - En Sød Og Liflig Klang
Folk and modern interpretations of Jule music old and new by the
Danish singer, accompanied by Harald Haugaard (who also produced the
recordings), with Ditte Fromseier, Harald Haugaard, Kirstine Elise
Pedersen, lea Havelund, Mikkel Bøggild, Sune Hånsbæk, Torben Sminge,
Hans Mydtskov, Karen Mose, Jullie Hjetland, Kristian Stærke on
violins, cello, guitar and vocals. One of the best Christmas
recordings I have heard in a while. Highly recommended.

Gjallarhorn - Rimfaxe
The new CD (2006) from this innovative and agressively creative
Finnish new-roots ensemble

You might also like:

Waterson:Carthy - Holy Heathens and The Old Green Man
In 1965 The Watersons released the landmark album Frost and Fire - A
Calendar of Ritual Magical Songs. This new recording returns to the
themes, with resonant ensemble singing bolstered by The Devil's
Interval, a young and exciting new vocal trio of Lauren McCormick,
Emily Portman and Jim Causely, and accompanied by guitar, fiddle,
mandolin, brass and percussion. Superb!

la bergere - fi de l'eau
The second recording by la bergère is again a poetic vision, created
by the trio of Sylvie Berger (voice), Julien Biget (guitar, bouzouki,
mandolin, percussion, voice), and Emmanuel Pariselle (accordion
diatonique, concertina, flute, voice), joined by a wonderful list of
guests including Gilles Chabenat, Gabriel Yacoub and Alain Bruel.
Highly recommended, as was their first!

Kristi Stassinopoulou and Stathis Kalyviotis - Taxidoscopio
These Greek artists are producing global pop without peer, mixing
local roots with international sounds and modern technology to create,
over the course of the last few years, a completely unique aural
pallette that relates to almost no one else.

First Annual
THERESA ANDERSSON STUDIES ABROAD
Sweden to Host Students of Violin and Guitar

New Orleans music darling Theresa Andersson, loved for her contagious
and radiant musical energy, announces her first annual Studies Abroad
program to take place on the island of Gotland in Theresa's native
Sweden. Andersson's infectious presence and talent have earned her
the reputation, and multiple awards, as Best Female Performer/Violin
Player/Singer in New Orleans for the past 10 years - which is no small
feat amidst the rich musical scene of the Big Easy.

This year fifteen violin and guitar students will be selected to
travel and study with Andersson and Swedish guitar master, Jan
Ekedahl, from August 4 -16, 2007.

Both artists (Ekedahl is Andersson's childhood teacher, mentor, and
one of the pioneers of folk guitar in Sweden) will teach instrument
technique, music theory and composition with a focus on Swedish Roots
Folk Music.

The first leg of the trip will feature a relaxing seven-day music
studies program at the Gotland Folkhögskolain in Hemse village on
Sweden's famed Gotland island. Classroom instruction by Andersson and
Ekedahl, single or double dormitory accommodations and all meals will
be included. Andersson has personally arranged the itinerary to
include outings and daytrips that will enhance the experience.

The final leg will begin with a 3-hour ferry voyage from ancient Visby
to Stockholm where our group will be free to explore the historic city
individually or participate in organized group diversions.
Accommodations include 3 nights in Stockholm.

New:

various artists - Hardangar Fiddle (Norway)
Traditional music for the hardangar fiddle (hardingfele) from Norway,
by performers young and old including Håkon Høgemo, Lorentz Hop,
Synnøve S. Bjørset, Lars Underdal, Åse Teigland.

Lorentz Hop - Hardangar Fiddle
Back in print! "Lorentz Hop lived from 1887 to 1954 and was one of
Norway´s leading Hardanger fiddle players in his time. He was from
Fana near Bergen. From 1930 until he died in 1954, Hop toured and
played in Norway and abroad. The music dates from the 17th century.
The Hardanger fiddle music from western Norway has power, strong heavy
rhythms, and a very rich explorative tonality. Lorentz Hop is a sound
from the past - with something to tell us, today." - from the liner notes

Terje Isungset - Two Moons
The second recording of "all ice" music from the Norwegian
percussionist, this time joined by Per Jørgensen on vocal and ice
trumpe, with Isungset on ice percussion, icehorn and isofon.
Absolutely unique; beautiful, surprising and highly recommended.

Jorun Marie R. Kvernberg - self-titled
The Norwegian fiddle and hardanger (hardingfele) player (a member of
both Tindra and Majorstuen) presents tunes from Nordmøre and Romsdal.
Says the artist: "Deep red, sober and sonorous tunes from Tresfjord;
bright green, breezy and upbeat dance tunes from Midsund; steel blue
and razor sharp tunes from Nordmøre."

Soetkin Collier - Nocturne
Soetkin Colliers first CD is a collection of songs about love, hope,
despair and faith in a dark and romantic setting. She is accompanied
by Tom Theuns on guitar and Didier François on nyckelharpa (Swedish
key-fiddle). She contributes her own compositions along with personal
arrangements of traditional songs from Flanders and Sweden. A
recording of stark beauty and powerful moods.

Turid Spildo - Nykkjen
Turid Spildo is best known as the vocalist and hardang fiddler from
the Norwegian ensemble Dvergmål. Here she is in solo mode, singing
songs from the West-coast of Norway, accompanying herself on
hardanger-fiddle andorgan. The tunes were collected by a schoolteacher
from Sogn og Fjordane, North-West in Norway: Olav Sande (1850-1927) in
the period 1880-1904. 16 of the tunes, mostly ballads, keep the old
tradition alive in this simple and lovely recording.

Sussie Nielson - Pigens Morgen
The Norwegian singer's 2006 release of Norwegian and Irish folk songs,
accompanied by piano, bass, harp, violin, bouzuki, bagpies, etc.

Kristian Blak and Yggdrasil - Risastova
The ensemble Yggdrasil embarks on its 25th year with an ensemble of
musicians from Faroe isalnds and Estonia, and featuring Kari
Sverrisson. They perform modern interpretations of traditional Faroese
skjaldurs, ballads & hymns. There are also unusual compositions by
Kristian Blak.

ZetaBoo - OuterRail
ZetaBoo arrives for a second round with this down to earth CD, a
unique blend of pop, jazz and folk-roots. Composer Jarmo Saari offers
songs that are melodic and folky, spontaneous and intuitive. Marko
Timonen provides the swinging percussion that is at the heart of this
new recording, driving a more relaxed band of vocals, accordion,
keyboards, guitars, cavaquinho, trombone, lapsteel, keyboards, citara,
and bass (Pekka Lehti) , a bit more subtle than their previous
releases. The theme of the disc is the outer rail and homesickness.
Says Saari: 'This is like a series of traveller's landscapes. The
journey is more important than arriving. The traveller prefers to
follow a flitting butterfly or the advice of a stranger than a tourist
map. Boldness and spontaneity are rewarded.'

Various - Munnharpe-Fille-vern (2 CD set)
A two CD collection of both archival and contemporary performances on
the Norwegian munnehape (aka tromp or jews harp), dedicated to an 18th
century rag collector who gave the name to the title tune. Includes
extensive book of notes in Norwegian and English.

Ovrevoll Spelemannslag - Spillegal / Gypsy horses
The Fiddlers of Øvrevoll present 'horse-related music' from
Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Ireland and Iceland, in untraditional
performances of traditional fiddle tunes. The ensemble includes two
members of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, one gypsy-and folk music
player, and one of Norway's most famous jazz musicians. Øvrevoll
spelemannslag (in English; the racecourse fiddlers) hope to honor the
horse, the symbol of freedom, in a caravan ride through 10 European
countries

Back in stock:

Braten-Berg, Mazur and Willemark - Stemmenes skygge
Norwegian Kirsten Bråten Berg (vocals, jew's harp), Sweden's Lena
Willemark (vocals, violin, viola), and Danish percussionist Marilyn
Mazur join together for is going to be one of the great Nordic
recordings of 2005. 'Voices' Shadow' is a pure trio recording,
unadorned and yet ornate in structure, deeply rooted in tradition and
yet almost avant garde in performance, and a total joy to listen to.

Bridges: Live In China
A cross cultural concert by Norwegian and Chinese musicians: Terje
Isungset (Percussion, Ice Percussion), Unni Løvlid (Vocals), Frode
Haltli (Accordion), Lu Yingmei (Vocals), Wu Chuan Ping (Vocals), Pan
Xin Zhi (Vocals), Wu Anhua Dongliang (Vocal, Dong Pipe and Flute,
Ox-bone Fiddle, Lusheng).

Gjallarhorn - Rimfaxe
The new CD (2006) from this innovative and agressively creative
Finnish new-roots ensemble

Hyperborea - Semmosta
Hyperborea has slowly but steadily evolved into one of Finland's best
performers of traditional folk music. The quartet were named the
official group of the year at Finland's Kaustinen Folk Music Festival
2006. Piia Kleemola (fiddle, viola, 15-string kantele, vocals), Antti
Paalanen (one- and two-row accordion), Petri Prauda (cittern,

Mats Hellberg, leading preserver of Swedish folk music

Mats Hellberg died unexpectedly on September 17th 2006. He was a
drummer and record producer who found himself cast as one of the great
apostles of traditional music in Sweden.

Since the 1980s, he was the driving force behind Giga Records, founded
in 1976 by musicians Per Gudmundson and Magnus Backström. In the
following 30 years the label has provided the world with a look at
some of the greatest musicians of Sweden, from the old teachers to
some of the rising stars, creating over 80 LPs and CDs that have
provided the whole world with a glimpse into the wide ranging beauty
of Swedish folk music.

Here are just a few of the artists that Giga exposed to the world:
Pelle Bjornlert
Ulf Storling
Pakkos Gustaf
Simon Simonson
Ale Möller
Kjell-Erik Eriksson
Lennart Gybrant
Jonny Soling
Mats Berglund
Anders Norudde
Ole Hjorth
Björn Ståbi
Erik Pekkari
Ellika Frisell
Bengt Lofberg
Kalle Almlof
Susanne Rosenberg
Johan Hedin
Per Gudmundson
Magnus Backstrom

There is currently no word on what the future of Giga records will be.

I assume there will eventually be more news on the Giga web site

Nara - Om
Nåra is the trio of Gunnel Mauritzson (vocals), Björn Ståbi (fiddle),
Bengan Janson (accordion). This is their second recording, a wonderful
mix of old roots and new ideas centered on the timeless themes of love
and life, by three of Sweden's most respected musicians.

Knut Reiersrud and Iver Kleive - Nade over nade
Nåde over nåde is the third recording by Norwegian guitarist Reiersrud
and organist Kleive, again recorded with the full pipe organ and in
the beautiful acoustics of the Odense Cathedral. As with their earlier
albums, old psalms and folk tunes predominate, with a few interesting
reinterpretations of contemporary songs ("What a Wonderful World" and
"Grandma's Hands"). But this time Reiersrud and Kleive have maximized
the church's dynamics and three-dimensional qualities, fully exploited
under guidence of recording engineer Alf Christian Hvidsteen. Highly
recommended.

Kvasir - Nye Sko (new shoes)
Interpretations of traditional Danish dance tunes and songs, with
Mette Kathrine on accordion, Henriette Hansen on fiddle and vocals,
and occasional contributions by Yann Flaquet on guitar. Lively,
spirited music from Denmark for dancing and listening.

Instinkt - Grum
Hard hitting folk-roots-and-rock from one of Denmark's hot young
bands, grinding it out on fiddles, bass, drums, flutes, drejelire,
bratch, jewsharp and more.

Slatta - Slatta 2006
Slatta is Maria Jonsson (violin and viola d'amore), Daniel Fredriksson
(mandola and mandora/låtluta), Daniel Pettersson (contrabass and
chromatic nyckelharpa) and Thomas Andersson (violin). The ensemble
plays songs from Norrland (Västerbotten and southern Lappland) in
Sweden, in a basically traditional style, but with great skill and
energy. (very limited quantities)

Frode Alnæs, Arild Andersen, Stian Carstensen - Hostslov
The third in the seasonal song cycles by Norwegian jazz artists Stian
Carstensen (accordion), Frode Alnæs (acoustic and electric guitars)
and Arild Andersen (bass), Høstsløv explores autumn in original
compositions and classics like Try To Remember, Vivaldis Høst sequeing
into Singing In The Rain, September Song, Harvest Moon, Autumn Leaves
and many others from both American pop and Nordic traditions.

Ville Ojanen - Rautavaara
Ville Ojanen is a chameleon in the field of Finnish folk music. He
plays his fiddle like a Finn but creates his own contemporary music
out of various local and global elements, where traditional acoustic
instruments interact with modern technology, creating a contrasting
tension. In one moment the colors of Ojanens fiddle and viola are
Arctic and archaic, the next they turn beautiful like a frosty night
in the Finnish winter. This is uniquely Finnish contemporary pop and folk.

Turkka and Paalanen - Halituli
The artists, Eero Turkka (harmonica) and Antti Paalanen (melodeon and
accordion) say: 'Our musical path together begun in the early 21th
century at the Sibelius Academy Folk Music Department and the Eurofolk
Conference. Nowadays we play Finnish and Nordic traditional tunes with
joy and a delicate response. Our repertoire also includes our own
compositions, where we let an ardent, sentimental mood combine with
our original musical humor. We always try to leave the door open for
the creative lunacy and the impulses of a moment. Our first album was
made in the spirit of a jam session. Some of the tunes were recorded
from the first take and no 'wrong sounds' were patched up in afterwards.'

Sondre Bratland - Rosa Fra Betlehem
Songs for Christmas sung by the great Norwegian artist, beautifully
recorded at the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem, and accompanied by
Knut Reiersrud, Iver Kleive and Paolo Vinaccia. (Released in 1993)

Fatang - walkie - talkie
A 2006 release by the Swedish new-routes folk group is edgy, clever,
musically exciting and full of rich twists and turns. Fans of the
Vasen quartet recordings will find this one up to their standards!
Peter Rousu (electric bass and guitar), Olle Bohm (percussion) and
Henrik Eriksson (nyckelharpa - keyed fiddle). Highly recommended.

Nina Ramsby and Martin Hederos - Jazzen
Singer Nina Ramsby and pianist Martin Hederos first met in 2000 and
began singing casually together. In January 2004 recorded Visorna, a
collection of their favorite songs in Swedish. In the spring of 2005
they began work on this new recording, Jazzen, featuring their own
unique takes on jazz standards by notable jazz performers like Nina
Simone, Billie Holiday, Sade and Betty Carter. Nina has rewritten the
lyrics in Swedish, to suit her own needs and experiences. These are
bare, sometimes stark performances, mostly simply piano and voice,
with occasional string, harmonica, reed and brass punctuations that
envelope the voice and allow it room to expand and contract as it
needs. They also have 2 original pieces (one song, one instrumental),
which to my ear, are some of the best pieces on the CD.

Tummel - Oy!
This Nordic klezmer unit is based in Malmö, Sweden and Copenhagen,
Denmark, and their agressive style of playing the music is fresh and
interesting. This is their first release, 2001, that started it all.

Back in stock:

Marie Boine, Inna Zhelannaya and Sergey Starostin - Winter in Moscow
The classic recording by the Norwegian innovator and two greats of
Russian roots

Jul i Folkton
Music for the Juletide, in a recording that includes artists like
Sofia Karlsson, Sara Isaksson, Ale Möller, Lisa Rydberg, Lena
Willemark, Esbjorn Hazelius, Roger Tallroth, Louise Hoffsten and
Rebecka Tornqvist, is probably worth listening to any time of the
year. Together they form a Nordic "supergroup" worthy of your
attention, even on the hottest summer day!

Also of possible interst:

The Shin - EgAri
A trio of Georgian musicians who met in Germany, guitarist Zaza
Miminoshvili, bassist and vocalist Zurab J. Gagnidze and
vocalist/percussionist Mamuka Ghaghanidze combine Georgian folk
melodies with jazz, native polyphonic singing with scat and joined by
an ensemble of guests on reagional persucion, douduk and vocals, great

Just listening to the guys jumping at the Cedar and hear there German
announcement of Kottpolska....

I want to see them! Now!

Great album, reminds me of the only time I saw Hoven Droven live so far
(2002 in Rudolstadt that was).
Only a slight tear in my eye about the (definitely!) missing Grovhalling -
clear HD fav of mine.

More CDs from Norway and beyond
Also: restocks on many Heilo/Grappa releases
-----------------------------------------------------

Turid Spildo - Nykkjen
Turid Spildo is best known as the vocalist and hardang fiddler from
the Norwegian ensemble Dvergmål. Here she is in solo mode, singing
songs from the West-coast of Norway, accompanying herself on
hardanger-fiddle andorgan. The tunes were collected by a schoolteacher
from Sogn og Fjordane, North-West in Norway: Olav Sande (1850-1927) in
the period 1880-1904. 16 of the tunes, mostly ballads, keep the old
tradition alive in this simple and lovely recording. - Highly Recommended

Knut Hamre and Benedicte Maurseth - Rosa i Botnen (CD and DVD)
A CD and DVD set of traditional hardangar music from Norway, performed
by a group of some of the country's best musicians: Nils Økland
(Hardanger Fiddle, Fiddle, Viola D'amore), Benedicte Maurseth
(Hardanger Fiddle), Knut Hamre (Hardanger Fiddle), Håkon Mørch
(Percussion) and Sigbjørn Apeland (Organ). The wonderful bonus DVD
film, "Pieces of Another Time," tells the story of the musicians, the
makers and their ancient instruments. 22 minutes: in Norwegian,
subtitles in English.

Bridges: Live In China
A cross cultural concert by Norwegian and Chinese musicians: Terje
Isungset (Percussion, Ice Percussion), Unni Løvlid (Vocals), Frode
Haltli (Accordion), Lu Yingmei (Vocals), Wu Chuan Ping (Vocals), Pan
Xin Zhi (Vocals), Wu Anhua Dongliang (Vocal, Dong Pipe and Flute,
Ox-bone Fiddle, Lusheng). Listen!

Rusk - Rusk II
Rusk is a Norwegian folk trio of singer Unni Lövlid, accordionist
Frode Haltli and violinist/hardangar fiddler Vegar Vårdal. On their
second recording (2006), they focus on the music of the southeastern
part of Norway. The roots are traditional, but they play in a uniquely
rough and modern style.

Hoven Droven - Jumping at the Cedar (Live - 2 CDs)
The Swedish folk/rock quintet Hoven Droven is finally captured live,
the way they really need to be heard to appreciate their raucous,
rocking version of nordic roots. Recroded at the Nordic Roots Festival
in 2005 in Minneapolis. That entire concert is captured on 2 CDs, in
all its glory.

Dvergmal - Visor Og Kvæde Frå Blåberglandet
1996 recording by thereknowned Norwegian folk ensemble Dvergmål, the
home base for some of Norway's best: Jon Anders Halvorsen (voice,
harmonium), Marit Mattisgard (voice, langeleik), Øyonn Groven Myhren
(voice, lyre, seljefløyte) and Turid Spildo (voice, hardingfele).

Various Artists - Fortal
Traditional Songs From Honindal, Norway

Terje Isungset - Igloo
The Norwegian percussion settled into an ice hotel near the Arctic
Circle, built all of his instruments out of ice, and recorded this
unique and beautiful work, accompanied on some tracks by the wordless
vocals of Sidsel Endresen. It does not get more unique than this!

Unni Lovlid - Vita
A beautiful recording of solo voice by the Norwegian singer Unni
Løvlid (a member of the ensemble Rusk), made in a remarkable crypt
below a church in Norway. Phenomenal voice matched by phenomenal sonic
space... it can't get much better.

various - 4th International Jew's Harp Festival
2 CD set of performances from the 4th International Jew's Harp
Festival in Rauland, Norway in 2002 features artists from around the
world, from Norway to North America to Vietnam to Tuva and eastern
Europe.

Schal Sick Brass Band - prasti music
The 2006 release by Schäl Sick Brass Band, a multi-culti band from
Germany, features their usual blend of Balkan, Scandinavian, central
and eastern European music, but it all comes together like never
before. The lineup of guests adds to the fun, including appearances by
Kristi Stassinopoulou (Greece), Andreas Grötzinger (Sweden), Anna
Lindblom (Sweden), Fethi Ak (Türkyie), Stathis Kalyviotis (Greece),
Mustapha Zekirov (Macedonia), and Serdar Yayla (Turkey).

The only reference I have got from Odd Nordstuga is that he has been acting in Trollflöjten opera, The magic flute, famous opera from Mozart, but in Nordic version, with music composed by Harv. His role there was Fuglefanten (Papagen), he also plays some instruments there and he was one of the best actors on stage.

Opera premiere was In Norway last year and they have also been performing in Sweden this year.

I was actually looking for some other musical references from Odd Nordstuga so thanks for them.

David.

Odd Nordstoga is kind of all over the place, musically. I have not
heard his stuff in the last 2 years or so, so I can't speak to what
he's currently up to.

I liked him best in a more folky mode, especially the work he has
done with singer and harpsist Oyonn Groven Myhren. They worked for a
while (maybe they still do) as a simple duo... no extra musicians)
and it was really effective.

Heisan,

So that Harv concert that I went to last week, the guys sang a
Norwegian children's song that I only know a few words to, but it is
really catchy. And I want to catch the rest of the words to it, but I
can't seem to find them on the internet. One phrase goes: "Du skal få
sukkertøy og du skal få 'lade, du skal få være med på kinomategraf."
There is another song that includes the first part, but is about being
fat. I don't want that one. I want the one with all the nice things
in. It makes lullaby if you slow it down, or a fun, bouncy song if you
sing it fast, as Harv did.

So does anyone know the words to this song?

Thanks!
Kjersti Signe

Yepp, I had high expectations - and they were more than fulfilled: a
really great concert!!!

Some pictures from that night are now online at

http://www.heikopurnhagen.net/fliflethamre20061013

...and these two really worked out nicely:

http://www.heikopurnhagen.net/fliflethamre20061013/dsc_5484.jpg_.html

BTW: the concert was recorded by Swedish Radio, and will be broadcast
some time, earliest in December this year (probably in the Sunday 19:30
slot). You can tune into that station on the web at http://www.sr.se/p2/
"Lyssna på P2 Musik".

P.S.: Thanks to all the Nordic Roots festival reviews - nice reading.
The not-too-enthusiastic comments about Vajas made me curious such that
I checked out the sound samples they have on the net at
http://vajas.info/soundsENG.htm - and I actually like that stuff. Not
really surprising, with Nils Johansen (musical wizard of Bel Canto) and
Ande Somby (Tromsø University) in the line-up ;-)
