Some say that watching "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" on acid would be a good
idea. Then again, this is usually the voice of the inexperienced
speaking. It would be a frightening task and I think the few that
would be able to handle it would be the extreme trippers, the folks
that just may have broken on through to the other side. "Jesus and
Her Gospel of Yes" is for them.
I mention "Pee-Wee's Playhouse" as it's what it resembles in all its
vibrantly colored nonsense. But there's no King of Cartoons or
Cowboy Curtis here. Instead, this is a religious "tale" and we have
a female Jesus, a transgendered Moses and an assortment of
performance artists writhing about, speaking gibberish to each
other. Yes, the film is nice to look at with its multi-layering of
various artists' paintings and computer generated images creating a
world that looks like a children's book on fire, but it really is
your tolerance for the gibberish that will dictate your love or hate
for "Jesus and Her Gospel of Yes." And I'm sure there was more to it
than gibberish, but I, with my feeble mind, couldn't find deeper
meaning in someone moaning "Honey Nut Cheerios" over and over again.
I don't know about art, but I know what I can't stand. But for you
trippers out there looking for a new kind of kick – here's your fix!
