Welcome to the list, Ted. We have many members in the Portland area.
My best advice is short and simple....join the Oregon Bluegrass Assn.
Their bi-monthly Bluegrass Express (and calendar on the off months)
will keep you fully informed. Of course, you might get the info even
faster on nwbluegrass! A single membership is $18 (or $46 for 3
years). Couples are $20 ($51 for 3 yrs). Send name, address, phone
and email to: OBA, PO Box 1115, Portland, OR 97207.

Since you're up there on the border, you might also want to join the
Washington BG Assn. Their dues are $15/yr, or $18 for a couple. Their
address is: WBA, PO Box 490, Toledo, WA 98591.

Ted, one thing you asked about is instructors. I notice that the WBA
Gazette lists four for mandolin, guitar, and glockenspiel (all in the
Seattle, Tacoma, Bothell area).

Does anyone know if the OBA has ever considered listing instructors
in the Express? How do most of you go about finding an instructor?
Who are some of the main bluegrass ones we have in Oregon?

So Kathy, when are we gonna open up that can of worms??...Bill
Monroe's vision of bluegrass. Have you see Tom Ewing's book, The Bill
Monroe Reader? There is a review of it in this month's Bluegrass
Unlimited, and it's highly recommended reading. Ken can tell us more
about it. I'm sure he's read it from cover-to-cover, and I think he
might even have it for sale at his shop in Stayton!.

Thanks Joe!  I needed this giggle today.  My oh my you came up with some gooduns.  I personally liked Knott their Sister, but don't want to step on the Knott Bros., although it would look great on a festival flier <hehe>.  I will share these pearls of wisdom with the gang on Wednesday (tomorrow).

Welcome from another newby to this list Ted.  I was told a "sheila" in Aussie lingo means something to the effect of a looker, chippie, party girl.  The Shelahs sounds good to me but I think the guys wouldn't quite go for it.  Ah, but the call to front stage is great.......

Don't take me seriously,

Hello Everyone!

The following is a forward from Kathy Boyd that she sent out last week. I
just got back from Seattle last night after spending four nights with Suzi
in the hospital (yikes!). She had a couple of rough days while I was there,
but she's still holding her own. Most of the issues she's facing right now
are the result of all the chemo and radiation she went through in
preparation of the transplant. In other words, the side effects have been
expected.

Her docs are just playing that "wait and see" game. Suzi's attitude
continues to be wonderful, even joking around through some of her worst
moments. Her sister Carol is with her right now so Suze is getting plenty
of support through this whole thing.

Keep up the prayers -- they seem to be working!

Dee Ann

Joe, even though it's fairly close I've never been to this one. I know in
the past they have had Steve Kauffman do one of his guitar workshops and I
think he will be there again but to my knowledge they don't have any bands
that play. I believe the phone number belongs to Richard Eich, who is a
mando/guitar player in the area. Hope this helps.

Hi grassers,
I was looking thru the Victory Review yesterday and noticed something called
the "Republic Bluegrass Festival" on May 11-13 in Republic, WA (same dates
as the Orting Festival).

There's nothing in the WBA Gazette or OBA Express about a Republic BG
Festival. A contact number is (509)775-2846. Republic is a small town way
over in NE Wash. in the Okanogan/Colville Forests.

Does anyone know if there really is such a festival? Have any of you ever
been to it? Who's playing there? Any other details? Jim, do you know? What's
the scoop? Curious and inquiring minds want to know. Thanks! Joe

The OBA does list instructors, if they just send in their information. I
think Pete Schwimmers ad is in there every time. I've seen others, but
that's the one that comes to mind.

Instructors? Well, Pete of course. George Chudacoff for guitar. (George
is my new hero) Ken, you teach lessons don't you? I'd suggest going to a
jam and asking people who THEY learned from. I bet there are some GEMS out
there for instructors that we don't even know about.

How are we doing? Dee Ann and I need to make more tickets! I've sent about
400 our to folks who want to help sell them. Haven't counted lately how
many ticket stubs I've received, but the coffee can I'm storing them in
until I get down to Ken's is looking pretty good!

For those of you who don't know, Ken has donated a Santa Cruz guitar and
case worth approx. $2,700 to help raise money for The Suzi Samuels Leukemia
Fund. Tickets are $5.00 each, and EVERY PENNY goes to help the Samuels
family with Suzi's medical expenses. The drawing will be held September
29th at Cartwrights Music, hopefully with Suzi drawing the winning ticket
herself!

If you would like to purchase tickets, you can get them at Cartwrights
Music, Wallys Music, Classic Cycle, or from numerous Bluegrass folks around
the area. You can also send a check and enough address labels to cover all
the tickets you purchase to:

The Suzi Samuels Leukemia Fund

If you would like to sell tickets, please contact me by e-mail with your
mailing address and how many tickets you would like and I'll send you a
"kit".

A special THANK YOU to everyone who is helping with this project, whether
it's buying, selling, or just spreading the word!

So having seen the ever-so-subtle hints about introducing yourself to
the list - here's my bio.

Name: Mark Kramer
DOB: 03/23/52
City: Carnation
State: WA

Started playing music around 7 I think. I wanted a guitar but the local
music store
convinced my mother I should take violin lessons for a year. I did that
and that was
my last experience with a violin. Then around 11 I had saved enough
allowance at
25 cents a week to pay for half a guitar - my parents payed the other
half. It was the
the folk boom at that time so I took some lessons from a lady who taught
me Peter,
Paul and Mary songs. At 13 I got Gibson SG guitar and took some lessons
to learn
how to play like the Venturers, you know, Apache, Pipeline, Wipe Out....

I didn't play much through high school as I was then spending my spare
time surfing
the beaches from Malibu to Rincon. I took a couple of more lessons
around the age
of 17 because I started to go to parties where people would come with
guitars and sing
Crosby, Stills and Nash or Neal Young songs. Still though, I never took
it seriously
enough to get any good.

When I went to college and actually started having to do homework, I
began practicing
on a more regular basis as a break between calculus and physics
problems. I would get
together and jam with friends which meant either "blues in A" or "blues
in E". That all changed
when I heard a classical guitar record by Christopher Parkening. The
summer after I turned
21 I took some classical guitar lessons and found out everything I was
doing with my hands
was wrong. I had to learn scales, arpeggios, note reading, and practice
with correct posture, etc.
It was quite a shocking experience. However I persevered during the next
4 years until I
started actually playing my etudes and pieces in public at a little
coffee house in Isla Vista.

In the fall of that year I landed a job in a fancy restaurant in
Montecito playing classical guitar
for the rich and famous as they talked and ate dinner. I decided to take
my degree in geology
which I had managed to accumulate and stick with playing guitar "for
awhile". During that time
I practiced religiously for 8 hours a day and then went and played at
the restaurant 5 nights a week.
I took classical guitar lessons for some years from Vicente Gomez in
L.A. and at the same
time took jazz guitar lessons from Ted Greene.

Over the years I ended up teaching the guitar and some music theory
classes at Santa Barbara City College.
That lasted 12 years. I also taught at the National Guitar Workshop
http://guitarworkshop.com/ for 5 summers
at the L.A. campus.

What started out as "for awhile" ended up being nearly 20 years. I went
back to graduate school
in computers after I turned 40 and now work at "a big software company"
in Redmond, WA.

Now, how did I end up on this list? One of my co-workers is into
bluegrass and turned me onto some
fiddle tunes during a jam at lunch here at work. That was about a year
and half ago. During that time
I've completely changed what I listen to and what I play on the guitar.
My classical and jazz guitars
have sat dormant while I've been woodshedding Blackberry Blossom and
Devil's Dream. This winter
I attended my first BG festival, Wintergrass, and had a blast. I even
had dinner at the Spagetti Factory
with KenC and some other northwest BG folks. I've been known to lurk
around at the Maltby
jam as well.

So, if you see a guy with nice technique who just can't seem to play the
"right notes" on bluegrass
tunes, that just might be me.

Mark

I've been in Brookings and Medford on business the past couple days and
it was so refreshing to return home to Eugene this afternoon, check my
e-mail, and find notes from Chick and Robert Buckley concerning my
e-mail to them on the appropriateness of material on on group page. It
is nice to find fellow Blue grassers that believe that our commentary
should be appropriate. Hence, foul language is not acceptable and that
all of us should be allowed our individual opinions as long as we don't
chastise others for theirs. Joe Ross does such a terrific job in
getting the news out and keeping all of us in line when we get into a
debate, sometimes heated, by making sure we get to express our opinions
without ridiculing the opposition. I almost left the group here as I
was severely chastised on my opinion a few weeks back by a group member
I think I don't know or had never met in person.

So, Kudos to Joe for keeping us in line and to Ken who gives us such
great uplifts in letting us know that others are still having birthdays
like ourselves. Misery loves company.......Right?

Steve Blanchard and I are off to Calif. tomorrow to do a couple of shows
in San Diego. We are driving down and that will give us ample time to
work out some new material for Steve's new CD which is projected for the
fall. We have a new instrumental called "The Road To Colburg" which we
are so excited about and will perform in San Diego for the first time
this coming Saturday night (wish us luck) Darn, I sure hope I can
remember my part. We are planning on spending a week or so in Calif.
and attending several jams in the LA area. We've found some really good
"open mic" evenings going on and this will give us chance to debut some
new material.

I hope to have a bunch of e-mail to read when I get back and stories to
tell all on our return. Will be thinking of all of you on our trip and
attempting to show the Cal Grassers that they don't have anything on us
folks up here in Oregon.

Smiles to all till we return

Great idea on teachers. Peter Schwimmer is in there, but he buys and ad to be in there and we need a list of OBA/WBA members (Current) that teach bluegrass. Put me down for standup bass, Mandolin and beginning fiddle and Guitar...If it can't be a free listing in the express, then we should build a list here.... Good Joe...Kenc

Weissenborn, Oahu or equivalent lap style guitar along.
Subjects covered will be Right/Left Hand Technique and
Positioning, Finger Rolls, Playing in Odd Keys, Improvisation,
Hammer Ons, Pull Offs, Fills, Chords, Backing Up a Vocalist,
Slants, String Pulls, Rhythm Technique, Alternate Tunings,

Welcome Dick!

So. . . . . just where in the Northwest are you located? I'm assuming the
Portland area if you know Hugh. (although I must confess I'm not able to
decode your little message about him, but I think it was positive!).

Feel free to jump in discussions anytime. Keep us posted of your life's
highways too. We're all family here!

Happy Bluegrass birthday to Ray Davis 1933, Benny Martin 1928. Flatt and Scruggs record "Live At Vanderbilt" album 1963, Roy Lee Centers died 1974.
Most everyone knows who Benny Martin and the others are, but let me quote some information from the Barry Willis book about Ray Davis

The promotion of bluegrass music is one of the key ingredients to the continuance of bluegrass music today. Without the promoters, the music would not be nearly as popular today as it is. Ray Davis is an important promoter who has spent more than 25 years bringing bluegrass to the Baltimore area, and continues doing so into the 1990's. His sponsor was usually Johnny's Auto Sales.
Davis began his career in 1948 when, at fifteen, he sang bluegrass on WDOV, Dover Delaware; he also emceed on the pop radio station. In 1950, he emceed at the Baltimore's old Hippodrome. In 1954, Davis joined XERF far a year in Del Rio, Texas/Villa Acuna, Mexico, and frequently transmitted at 150,000 watts-strong enough to interfere with a local cable television station which complained to the Federal Communications Commission. The FCC investigated, but the overpowering signal continued.
Back in Washington, Davis featured many of the same records played by other radio stations. In 1962 Davis began producing his own records under the Wango label. His first record featured Clyde Moody on the twelve-string guitar. He later produced the Stanley Brothers, Don Reno, Red Smiley, Bill Harrell and Charlie Moore. In 1975, Davis promoted concerts for artists including Larry Sparks, Del McCoury, Ted Lundy, Jimmy Martin and Reno and Harrell's band. Said Davis,"We've promoted a lot of shows and the only ones that never lost money were bluegrass. Maybe I'm an outlaw and do it because everyone says you can't make a living doing it but I've done it. I've been working close, but I've lived."..Kenc

Welcome Ted!

Chick Rose is on this list and he's THE MAN when it comes to instrument
instruction in the greater Portland/Vancouver area. Joe is right about
joining the OBA. You get so much great info just from the
newsletter/magazine that it's well worth the price. The Express also allows
members to place free classified ads and Peter Schwimmer (also on this list)
is one awesome musician in your area who has advertised lessons. There is
also a listing of bands and jams all around Oregon. Jammin' is my passion
and believe me, you will get plenty of tips and great practice by attending
as many of the jams listed in the back of the Express.

Keep on Pickin',
Jammin' Fool Sal

Not quite correct, Ken. Peter has never paid for an ad as an instructor as far as I know. We've almost always had a Bulletin Board for anyone who wants to submit something for sale or for lessons or whatever is appropriate. As in everything else to do with Express...its like pulling teeth to get anyone to submit anything!!!!!

We would LOVE to have a listing of instructors. I agree that they should be members of the OBA for the free listing, tho. Now, we just need someone to VOLUNTEER to collect and maintain that information for us!!!! Joe's listing will be a good place to start.

While we're on the topic of the Express...The April-May issue was running a little behind schedule and Krista just informed me that she took it to the PO over two weeks ago and has no idea why its not in your mailboxes. Has anyone received it yet???
