It was a great show and a packed one!  We owe Whiskey Puppy and the Sawtooth
Mountain Boys a great debt of gratitude both for the great music and the influx
of funds we reaped from those that came to see some bluegrass and support the
OBA!  Thanks for comin' out!!

Thanks to all involved...The bands most especially, Mississippi Pizza for
hostin', Rachel for organizing, Chip for sound and on and on...

Cheers,
Colby

For those of us who had to be in other places, does anybody have a report
from the OBA fundraiser Saturday night? Pretty good attendance? Most
members are right there in Portland, so...?

The Rev. Jesse rocks the mandolin and screams himself into a trance, Maz(el Tov) plays Astralachian guitar,Brien slaps the dog-house bass, living legend "Professor Horsehair"-Chip Cohen blows everybody's mind with his otherworldly fiddling, while Papa Soul plays washboard when he's not in the Soul Kitchen. On our recordings and occaisionally at a live show, you'll come across the wild rogues; Zach Harigodt- Banjo, Jobidiah Griswald- Wahsboard, Matt Highland- Harmonica, Heather Bray- fiddle. Their contributions to the band (while less frequent nowadays) remains enormous.

Conjugal Visitors shows are always raging events! With their unique mix of Mountain Dance music, bluegrass, jazz, old-time country and jug/folk, Conjugal Visitors shows are always a hoot. And judging from the massive crowds that keep showing up to their gigs, and the fact that they were just voted Best Acoustic Band in the Eugene Weekly's "Best of Eugene" reader's poll, it seems like a good chunk of Lane County knows that there's always a good time to be had with The Conjugals! These boys are hot musicians and great singers, and they aren't shy about putting it on display during marathon sets of tightly woven arrangements and jazzy improvisation.

WHERE GOD LEFT HIS SHOES benefit for the homeless - 6pm
1031 N Garden St
Bellingham WA 98226
Price: by donation

The Interfaith Coalition and Clear Blue Sky Productions present a memorable evening of thought-provoking entertainment to benefit the homeless in Whatcom County. 6pm - music with Cabin Fever NW. 7pm screening the movie "Where God Left His Shoes", with an introduction by the film producer Michael Caldwell. Community discussion to follow the film. PG-13, may not be appropriate for small children.

Cabin Fever NW is the Bellingham-based duo Dianne Bochsler and Tara Wolfe, performing true Americana roots music. Their straight-from-the-heart presentation of songs captures the spirit of traditional folk music. You will not hear better harmony singing anywhere.

Great music, great lyrics, great storytelling. Their compositions reflect real life, including joy, loss, love, leaving home, great cars and the complexities of crime and punishment. Their original work "Give Me That Kiss" received first place in Gary Allen's Music City Beat Nashville Songwriting Competition, and other originals have earned recognition by international media, including NPR's Car Talk which broadcast "Yellow Mustang", and SING OUT! Magazine which featured "Mary Alice".

Western-world humans are no longer spontaneously cognizant of the Greek or Latin
number prefixes like dec-, or non-, or oct-, nor are they able spontaneously to
formulate in appropriate Latin or Greek terms the larger numbers spoken of by
scientists nowadays only as powers of ten. On the other hand, we are indeed
familiar with the Anglo-American words one, two, and three, wherefore we may
prefix these more familiar designations to the constant illion, suffix which we
will now always equate with a set of three successive zeros.

Howdy!!

I’m delighted to share the following information with all of you. After
reading this, I’m sure you won’t want to miss this event.

Jim

Victory Music is pleased to present the “Kings of Mongrel Folk”, in concert

Orville Johnson and Mark Graham, the mongrel kings themselves, offer a
northwest semblance of royalty and music in wry humor, soulful blues, hot
pickin', and savory vocals. Mark plays harmonica and clarinet, and Orville
chimes in with guitar and dobro. Each come together with great harmonies,
unparalleled humor, and a diverse fusion of styles from Mississippi blues, R
& B and jazz leanings, to fiddle tunes and songs with American and Celtic
flavorings.

These guys are active in the regional music scene, have played in numerous
groups over years, and have both been on Prairie Home Companion. They tour
together, nationally and internationally. Orville is oft thought of as a
player’s player, whose skills are steeped in many styles. He teaches
workshops and private lessons, produces, and has been on many albums. Mark
writes a humorous slice of life into songs many of which have been recorded
by others. Join us for a captivating evening.

Victory Music is pleased to present this concert on Friday, November 20,
2009 at 8 pm at the Q Café, 3223 15th Ave. W, 98119, just south of the
Ballard Bridge. The concert is a part of Victory’s renewed concert series
featuring the finest in area acoustic talent.

The event will open with a bluegrassy, American roots trio, Down the Road.
Cathi and Gary Davidson and John Tubbs feature strong harmonious duo and
trio vocals, and interplay with great guitar and mandolin picking.

Tickets are $15 and $13 for members of Victory Music. For more information

2010 Fiddle Tunes Registration Begins Soon

Posted: 08 Nov 2009 09:18 PM PST

Registration will begin for the 2010 Festival of American Fiddle Tunes
in mid-November. As always, it's first come, first served - and the
'09 Festival sold out - so stay tuned

Please note, that the '10 gathering runs July 3-10, 2010. That's
Saturday-Saturday, which is different than most years. We are doing
this in order to be able to produce our usual 4th of July show for the
community while assuring a premium workshop experience.

The Festival of American Fiddle Tunes provides an opportunity to be in
community with the bearers of fiddle traditions.

The goals of the gathering are broader than improving your skills as a
musician, and include discovering culture through music, learning
music in a cultural context, and building lifelong relationships in
the fiddle music community.

Now in its 34th year, “Fiddle Tunes” is a week-long, total-immersion
workshop with a hallmark of presenting an expansive array of regional
fiddle styles. Workshops, classes, band labs, tutorials, dances,
concerts, singing, open jams, hat parties – all contribute to a week
of living, learning, and jamming with masters of North American
fiddling traditions

Nancy Downieplays the hammered dulcimer, a unique folk instrument with many courses ofstrings which, as the name implies, are struck with little wooden hammers. The sound is something like a harpsichord. Ken says: Morning Greg. Thanks for your comment on the Cherryholmes show... You
would think that Cherryholmes would be traveling with a sound person these days,
but with the economy being what it is, perhaps that's just too many mouths to
feed. kenc

Holy cow! There was Stew and his sis, Janet Martin, my old friend. They were
being interviewed about their grandmother, Mary Dodge, who I only knew
through legend. The show is The Sagebrush Symphony on OPB-TV. It will
repeat, and maybe they will archive it. Its a fascinating tale, about the
profound effect Mary Dodge had on music in Oregon. Heck, Stew, you looked
sober.

Egan’s Ballard Jam House Seattle/Ballard, Washington

The Wiretappers came into being over the course of several late night, alcohol-assisted jam sessions around bluegrass festival campfires in the northwest part of Washington State, when longtime friends David and Scott met up with longtime friends Mark and Jake and began mixing the magical musical mysteries of swing, jazz, bluegrass, country and funky folk. We found much common ground and a convivial interest and energy for 3 part harmonies, experimental exploration and extending our musical terrain to new friends and audiences in the Pacific Northwest. The Wiretappers are available for community events, house concerts, festivals, parties, wedding receptions and almost any other venue where good time, toe-tapping music is welcome. Contact us directly at wiretappers@... for details.

Band Members Jake Weber - guitar, vocals; Scott Spadafora - guitar, vocals; David Smith - mandolin/fiddle, vocals; Mark Snyder - upright bass, vocals.
