Portland Musicians Donate Time And TALENT to purchase A New PA System for
Laurelthirst Public House
An artist driven benefit takes over the Laurelthirst Public House Thursday,
Friday and Saturday February 21-23 with performances contributed by some of
Portland's top acts. Over 15 LaurelThirst mainstays will come together to raise
money for a new and improved PA sound system to be donated to the club. In this
way the acts hope to "amplify the love" that is created in the form of music
every week at the LaurelThirst.
The Laurelthirst is a one-of-a-kind establishment and is arguably Portland's
"Art & Music Lover's" Public House. It is a special place where patrons hear
world-class performances every day of every week, all year round. The
LaurelThirst represents the type of intimate venue that was once prevalent all
over town, but now seems to be very nearly extinct. The Pub harkens back to the
true community DIY vibe that is the legacy of the psychedelic coffeehouses that
proliferated in Portland in the late 1960's.
A diverse culture is represented by those performing and many are regular
(and not so regular) patrons of this establishment, who have helped the
Laurelthirst become a community family room, bar and concert stage. Performers
as disparate as Kelly Jo Phelps, Darol Anger, the Holy Modal Rounders, Tony
Furtado, Michael Hurley, the Freak Mountain Ramblers, Baby Gramps, Golden
Delicious and even the Dandy Warhols have all graced the stage in the Pub's 20
year history.
It's not uncommon to find folks like M. Ward, Stephen Malkmus, or members of
REM and the Decemberists just hanging around and enjoying the music of others
from their community. Musical passion lives, breathes, plays and drinks here
among the publicans and performers.
Recently a few musicians noted that the caliber of musical performance
would benefit immensely from more sonic fidelity in the (now "non-smoking")
music room at "The 'Thirst". Those musicians proposed a fundraiser to help
boost the sound reinforcement to a greater aesthetic standard to achieve a
peak-experience that higher-fidelity delivers. The idea is to make things sound
better, not necessarily louder.
Scott Law, musician (Piano Throwers) and Laurelthirst regular explains:
"Margins are tight in this business and when faced with the potential of making
greater art for art's sake, The Laurelthirst Public House patrons, musicians and
management see this as an opportunity where everyone wins. We pull together as a
community, have some fun and get the job done."
