My Music

This month I've added two new features to my music page at mp3.com. First, There is now an audio welcome message from me. Just click on one of the links near the top of the page (under the "HELLO" that changes colors) to hear my message. http://www.mp3.com/JohnLinkVocalQuintet

Second, you can now buy my CD "Live at Saint Peter's" with your Mastercard or Visa through PayPal. Or if you prefer, just click on the following link:

Here is an excerpt from a new testimonial by a recent buyer of "Live at Saint Peter's":

"This is not the usual scat thing.." -Delilah

Here's a short review from the first issue of the eSoundz Reporter:

"The inspired works of the John Link Vocal Quintet captivate an audience from the very first note. The mastery of the combined classical/jazz influence, rendered by guitar and voice, makes its presence felt in their release of Live at Saint Peter's."

If you're already enjoying "Live at Saint Peter's", then please tell your friends about it and how to buy their own copies. If you haven't yet bought your copy, you are in for a treat! Click here to find out more and to hear selections from the CD: http://www.mp3.com/JohnLinkVocalQuintet.

My Feldenkrais Practice

Besides being a musician, I'm also a teacher of the Feldenkrais Method, teaching groups in classes and individuals privately. My clients come to me for help with a variety of issues, including but not limited to the following:

        Repetitive stress injuries
        Difficulty breathing
        Chronic pain
        Headaches
        Backaches
        Posture
        Voice (speech and singing)

Group and private lessons are pleasurable, fun, interesting experiences that lead to improvements in function and comfort. To learn more, visit http://www.mp3.com/JohnLinkFeldenkrais. It is almost certainly the case that you, or someone that is close to you, could benefit greatly from group or individual lessons with me (or with one of my colleagues throughout the world).

Voices Across America Update

After a lot of considerations, the final date has been chosen as
Sunday, September 30th for our Voices Across America Event! That
date is
available for most groups and is a better day for families and the
general
public to attend. The start time for all concerts should coordinate,
respectively, to all time zones. The following are the start times
that
will represent different cities across the nation:

Hawaii - 9:00am
Alaska - 11:00am
Pacific - Noon
Mountain - 1:00pm
Central - 2:00pm
Eastern - 3:00pm

As for the venues, it is recommended that the concerts be held in a
park, recreation hall, mall, or other easily accessible public
location,
with room enough for all. A stage setting will depend upon each
location accordingly, so choose with a good eye for visibility and
media
coverage. Sound equipment is the biggest hurdle, as power may not be
in
close proximity, but, most parks or recreation facilities have power
for
reserved use. Having one group set up the sound, for all to use, may
be
the easiest solution, with the arrangement of microphones in a choir
setting or on stands. Limited mics means pairing up or grouping
around.
Video and/or audio recording is up to the individual groups, as local
media will probably be there to capture the event. The only
stipulation
that we ask, is that the event begin as close to the allotted time as
possible, with the first song being our National Anthem, "The
Star-Spangled Banner". Most groups have, at one time or another,
been asked to
sing at a local game or holiday event, therefore, it probably already
resides in their repertoire. If not, you may find all the words
here:
http://www.treefort.org/~rgrogan/web/usa1.htm Determining which
group
will sing the opening is up to those attending, but could be sung by
all the groups, and public, if desired. Vocal Universe is contacting
all
local Red Cross chapters to ensure that a volunteer is there to
collect
donations. If for some reason there is not a local Red Cross chapter
in the area, a firefighter or police officer will also be there to
assist. Web donations are also accepted on the Red Cross website and
through PayPal. The World Wide Web addresses are:
www.redcross.org/donate or
www.paypal.com .

Vocal Universe has also begun the process of contacting national
media
venues for complete coverage. These venues include: television (ABC,
CBS, CNN, FOX, MTV, NBC, PAX, PBS, UPN, VH1, WB, and many private
cable
stations), radio (ABC, CBS, NBC, Public Radio), newspapers
(Associated
Press, New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today),
periodicals
(Good Housekeeping, People, Time-Life, Us), organization mailing
lists,
etc. Local news, radio, newspaper, and mailing lists should all be
contacted a.s.a.p., by groups attending, to announce the event and
draw
public attention. Word of mouth is also a reliable, and sometimes,
surprising factor.

We are more than confident in the judgment and decision-making of
each
group participating, and we expect a wonderful turnout. For your
assistance, we have included the 7 habits of highly effective free
public
vocal performance checklist:

1) Call and reserve the public park or recreation hall, usually with
the local Park and Rec Authority, or mall administration for indoor
activities.
2) Contact the other groups attending, to plan singing order,
equipment
setup, or something special.
3) Contact local media (television, radio, newspaper and
universities)
to make sure they announce the event and will have representatives
there.
4) Contact local fire and police departments to attend and show their
support. Have them bring materials to hand out to the public.
People
would love to see them.
5) Prepare song set lists and gather your group's products and
information for everyone interested at the event.
5) Have fun and help the audience to do so too. Many people desire
to
help in some way, and this may be the only opportunity they find.
6) Clean up the event area and thank everyone involved for making it
a
wonderful success.
7) Send CASA and Vocal Universe stories, photos and the total
monetary
donations of your local event and we'll post them for all to read.

As there is no set time length for the event, it is up to each group
on
their performance length and audience participation. If the party is
going good, then don't let it end! And, by all means, promote your
group and vocal music. Having group CDs, shirts, magnets, concert
announcements, etc., will help to increase exposure and fan base.

Finally, please submit your group name, address, phone number and any
other contact information for us to supply to other groups
participating
in your area. We will send out a completed list to each demographic
area by Friday morning. If your group knows of any other amateur,
collegiate, semi-pro, or professional groups that wish to attend,
encourage
them, support them, grab them and don't let go!

Again, CASA and Vocal Universe wish to sincerely thank all the groups
and individuals who have volunteered to participate in this national
event. We are very honored and grateful to be helping the victims
and
families of last Tuesday's tragedy. If you have any questions,
comments,
ideas, or just have something to say, please do not hesitate to
contact
CASA or Vocal Universe.

Wishes for the best,

Mark Montgomery

Dear Friends,

We hope that you and your loved ones are safe and finding ways to deal
with the aftermath of September 11.

As you can see, we've got several shows lined up this month in New York
and Boston. We'd love to see you at one or more. If you're charity-minded,
come to the October 20 show, with proceeds going to the Red Cross. Come
hear us try out some brand-new material and let us know what you think.
And we'll do our best to distract you, at least for a while, from these
uncertain times.

Be well, and hope to see you soon.

On Tuesday, October 23rd, I will be performing with the two newest members of the John Link Vocal Quintet, Lynelle Johnson (soprano) and Maren Montalbano (mezzo-soprano) at the Donnell Library Center Auditorium as part of a dance concert by Lori Belilove & Company. Lori Belilove is the world's leading interpreter of the dance of Isadora Duncan, the mother of modern dance. The program will include dances from the Duncan repertoire to the following compositions for which Lynelle, Maren, and I will be performing my arrangements for voice and guitar: Frederic Chopin's "Prelude No. 7", "Nocturne, Op. 9, No. 2", "Mazurka, Op. 17, No. 4", "Mazurka, Op. 68, No. 2", and Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria". This will be the first public performance of my arrangements of these compositions. In addition we will perform my arrangements of Chopin's "Prelude No. 4" and Debussy's "La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin". With the exception of "Ave Maria", all of these compositions were written for solo piano. The program will also feature dances accompanied by recorded music. For more information about Lori Belilove & Company, visit http://www.isadoraduncan.org.

The Donnell Library is located at 20 West 53rd Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues, in New York City. The program starts at 6:00 p.m. and is FREE! For further information call the Duncan Foundation at (212)691-5040 or the Donnell Library at (212)621-0619.

First, to our friends in Boston, thanks so much for your amazing welcome
at last Saturday night's concert at Boston University! We had a fantastic
time, and we were deeply honored to share the stage with vocal greats
SoRare, La Bande Magnetik, and Five O'Clock Shadow.

We've got another great show coming up at home in NYC this Friday. Boston
group All About Buford is coming to grace us with some seriously gorgeous
harmonies. Songwriting legend Sean Altman will be doing his legendary
thing. And we've got some new stuff for you as well (yes, even newer than
the new stuff we did for you last time). Please come and check out what
should be a great, great night of music.

We hope you're enjoying the CD--and if you don't have it yet, may we
interest you in buying one? The album (and/or tracks from it) has received
thumbs-up reviews from rarb.org, garageband.com, our parents, and most
recently from The Boston Globe. Pick up a copy at Friday's show, or else
order it online at our website store, http://www.duwende.com/store.html.

Thanks as always for all your support! Long live kindness, courage, and
independent music.

Peace,
DUWENDE
