eclectic ecstatic party sounds
Luckily for us, Mike Shannon is coming to NYC with the
Mutek entourage for the Saturday party, and will play a
special DJ set at our pre-party on friday night. Mike has
the technical and programming skills that only come with
many years of DJing (he has been at it for over ten years).
He is also an amazing producer, with releases on Force Inc,
Logistic, and his own Cynosure imprint. Mike is a key part
of the Montreal minimal techno scene, and we are thrilled
to have him play tonight. Other members of the Mutek
entourage will be in attendance as well (not playing
records, just hanging out) ... so come say hello, Canadians
are notoriously friendly!
DJ Abstract is Alex, who has been our barback and door
person for the last month or so. Dude has always been
enthusiastic about the music we play, so we had to get his
story. Turns out he put out some records on Palette (that's
John Tejada's label) that we own and love. His band The
Invisibles put a record out on DJ Hell's International
Deejay Gigolos label. Oh yeah, he's also one of the most
well respected US drum'n'bass producers. He has a huge
discography spanning many labels, including many on his own
label Pneuma. He's kinda new to town and hasn't really
played out much yet. We're expecting good things from his
set.
We met Jon Santos in the design world. Among many other
things, he is known in New York for throwing the insanely
popular Average Saturdays at subTonic last year. So now we
know him as a great DJ who crosses genres and always gets
people on the floor.

Akufen is one of the most well-known micro-house
producers
in the world. His 2002 debut album "My Way" on Force Inc
caused ripples in the electronic music waters that are
still being felt today. Since then, he has remixed
everyone from Richie Hawtin to Massive Attack. Akufen
incorporates found sounds, random radio static, and other
weird noises into his music, giving it an instantly
recognizable sound that really stands out from other
producers. This is a rare NYC appearance.
All 3 Deadbeat full lengths on ~scape have been spun
many
times in the early evening at the Bunker, and they usually
bring the trainspotters running up to find out what the
hell it is. Scott Monteith (aka Deadbeat) makes impossibly
deep digital dub that somehow avoids all of the dub cliches
and puts a fresh spin on the decades-old genre. As amazing
as the albums are, you really have to see the live set to
fully appreciate the sound. He had heads spinning and hips
shaking at his last subTonic gig. His new album has a
subversive poltical edge (something that is sadly absent in
most electronic music), and we deeply respect that at the
Bunker. http://techno.ca/deadbeat/
Also appearing will be Crackhaus, which is Deadbeat's
other
project with fellow Canadian Stephen Beaupre. Their sound
will definitely appeal to fans of micro-house superstars
like Akufen and the Perlon crew, but they put their own
humorous spin on the genre.
Vincent Lemieux is Akufen's best friend and partner in
the
Musique Risquée label. He is a major participant in the
Montreal techno scene, and we are excited to see what he
brings to the table at this event.
Once11 is known for an omnisensorial sensibility that
exploits more than one plane of sensorial input. The audio
aspect of his work is filled with references to various
electronic music styles such as drum 'n' bass, house, dub,
dance hall, and 1950s musique concrète. His urban visual
narratives incorporate a wide variety of "popular" sounds
to reflect the tensions and chaos of today as malleable
realities.
Hearthrob has been making unreleased secret weapons for
many of the best minimal techno DJs in the world. He has
recently released something on wax for the rest of us in
the form of an excellent track on the new M_nus
compilation. He has really been turning heads in the
minimal techno community and had the dancefloor bouncing
when he opened for Magda and Matthew Dear at the Canal
Room
recently. http://www.m_nus.com/
Someone Else's FoundSound label is currently the US's
best
answer to all of the amazing bleepy minimal funk that has
been streaming out of Germany for the past few years. His
records have gotten heavy play from everyone from Richie
Hawtin to John Peel (RIP). He also managed to put out a 12"
on Robag Wrhume's Musik Krause label, which is one of the
other most interesting techno labels on the planet right
now. After a recent successful tour of Europe, he has
upcoming releases on five different labels. He's played
the Bunker many times, and he ALWAYS ignites the
dancefloor.
http://www.foundsoundrecords.com/
Socks and Sandals is Clark ov Saturn and Sean Smith.
They
are the masters of fake German techno (although they have
been known to be serious from time to time). We're pretty
sure they are the only live comedy techno act in the world
right now. These guys keep getting better with each
performance, and we're thrilled to host them at the Bunker
once again. They have recently released their debut 7" on
their own label DIY style, and have an upcoming split 10"
on Microcosm with Miskate of FoundSound fame.
http://spacetruckingmogul.com/socksandsandals/
We've known Doily for a long time and she just keeps
getting better. After several releaeses on her own label
(Broklyn Beats, shared with Criterion) she's wandered
through sample cut dub and ambient textures to an all out
rootsy techno breakcore assault worthy of any audience.
It's eclectic electronics, heavy, chunky, and very
danceable.
http://www.broklynbeats.net/
Gys released the first record on zer0 g, which
immediately caught our attention with it's huge dubbed out
basslines and huge nods to Basic Channel. He went on to
release his excellent debut album on the label last year.
zer0 g has had many excellent nights at the Bunker, and we
are psyched to have Gys represent them at this amazing
event. http://www.zer0gsounds.com/
qpe released his debut album on the Agriculture in 2002,
and is set to release the follow up (which is HOT) in the
fall of 2005. His downtempo moody instrumental breakbeat
sound has drawn comparisons to DJ Krush, Boards of Canada,
and Depth Charge. qpe keeps it real and dairy free in a
genre that is all too often overun with cheesiness. Fans
who show up for Deadbeat will be all over this set.
