Oasis are giving away a free six-track CD in the UK this weekend, containing
three songs from
forthcoming album 'Heathen Chemistry'.
The CD marks a radical shift in the distribution of music because some of the
tracks will
"expire" after four listens.
To listen to songs from the new album you'll have to use the free CD to download
a digital key
that will unlock the songs using a software application called Big Time
multimedia player,
which also needs to be downloaded. The tracks will not play on a conventional CD
player.
After four listens, the CD will direct you to the HMV website to pre-order the
whole album,
which is released the following week.
Also included on the CD is the video to 'The Hindu Times', an exclusive
15-minute interview
with Noel Gallagher and three previously unreleased demo tracks. These will play
for an
unlimited number of times on normal CD players and PCs.
This method of making audio tracks available for preview while avoiding online
piracy is the
first of its kind and is likely to be used by other artists in the future to
promote new
material.
