Hoke Dwaine Dorough

DOROUGH, HOKE DWAINE 69, passed away June 22, 2008, in Rockledge, FL, from cancer complications. Born November 11, 1938, in Cordele, GA, he was a longtime resident of Orlando, FL, and moved several years ago to his recent residence in Merritt Island, FL. A loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. Hoke loved water activities: fishing, boating, and BBQs with family. A former member of the U.S.
Army, Hoke held a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Rollins College. He spent almost 20 years as a police officer of the City of Orlando where he retired as a Sergeant. He was also a retired Orange County Code Enforcement Officer. His memberships included Our Saviour's Catholic Church, Cocoa Beach, FL; the Orlando Masonic Lodge; Orlando Police Department Retiree's Association and the Dorough Lupus Foundation and Support Group. He was preceded in death by his daughter Caroline Y. Cochran. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Paula Flores Dorough; daughters Angelia M. Herring of Palm Bay, FL, and Pollyanna Dorough of Orlando, FL; sons John D. Dorough and wife Shayna of Winter Park, FL, and Howard D. Dorough and wife Leigh of Cape Canaveral, FL and Los Angeles, CA; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren and step-sister Anna Mae Wright. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2008, 6-8PM, at Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home, 101 N. Brevard Avenue, Cocoa Beach, FL. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 26, 2008, 10:30AM at Our
Saviour's Catholic Church, 5301 N. Atlantic Avenue (A1A), Cocoa Beach, FL. In lieu of flowers please send donations in Hoke's name to the

Hoke Dorough has passed away

This morning, June 22, at 9am, Hoke Dorough passed away in his sleep.

The Dorough family had the opportunity to spend time with Hoke before he passed and are very grateful for that time.

They also want to thank you all very much for your love, concern and prayers during this time, and appreciates all the good thoughts you sent their way. The family will continue to be dealing with this loss, and can only be glad that Hoke is in a better place now.

Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough is mourning his father, Hoke, who died
in his sleep, PEOPLE has confirmed. He was 69.

Dorough's father, a longtime code enforcement supervisor in Orange
County, Fla., had been diagnosed in March with lung and brain cancer.
Howie, 34, and his bandmates previously canceled their South Africa
concerts so the singer and his wife Leigh, 34, could be with his dad.

"Our family just wants to say thanks for all your prayers for my
father, Hoke Dorough. His strong will helped him to fight cancer for
the past three months. I was blessed to be able to spend the last
month with him and create some memories that I will take with me
forever," Howie said in a statement on behalf of his family...

The Dorough Lupus Foundation and Arnold Palmer Hospital have
initiated a support group to address the social and emotional needs
of adolescents and adults living with lupus in a safe and comfortable
atmosphere, staffed with medical professionals and bilingual
counselors at Arnold Palmer Hospital. This is a wonderful opportunity
for lupus patients and their family members to come and meet other
lupus patients, learn more about lupus, share stories, advice and
receive a variety of health care information to benefit lupus
patients and the entire group.

This month we are very excited to bring you Dr. John Francis, the
Director of the Florida Hospital Center for Thrombosis Research.
Originally from the United Kingdom, he joined Florida Hospital from
Southampton University Medical School in 1994. Dr. Francis' main
research and clinical interests are in the areas of anticoagulant
(blood-thinning) therapy, complications of heparin treatment, blood
clotting and cancer, and novel approaches to the assessment of
patients with blood clotting disorders.

He is a member of the International Society for Thrombosis and
Haemostasis, The American Society for Hematology, and The American
Heart Association. Dr. Francis was the Founding Editor of the
International Journal, Blood Coagulation & Fibrinolysis, sits on the
Editorial Board of Thrombosis Research and acts as a reviewer for
more than 20 other journals in the field of hemostasis, thrombosis
and cardiovascular medicine. He is currently Co-Chair of the
Thrombosis Study Group of the American Heart Association, and a
member of the North American Specialized Coagulation Laboratory
Association (NASCOLA).

Dr. Francis acts as a Consultant for several pharmaceutical and
diagnostics companies and is a frequent lecturer on many aspects of
hemostasis and thrombosis. He has published more than 120 papers in
this field.

Thrombosis (a blood clot) is a major cause of death in the western
world. In fact, more people die of blood clots than, for example,
breast cancer, AIDS and traffic accidents combined. Dr. Francis'
laboratory is involved in diagnosis of the many causes of thrombosis,
as well as research into this important area of clinical medicine.

Patients with Lupus often have an increased risk of blood clots. Dr.
Francis will talk about the problem of thrombosis in general, and in
Lupus patients in particular. He will also talk about the tests his
laboratory performs to predict the risk of blood clots in Lupus
patients, as well as their research � partly funded by the American
Heart Association � to better understand the risk of thrombosis in
these individuals.

Arnold Palmer Hospital, together with the Dorough Lupus Foundation,
has initiated a support group to address the social and emotional
needs of children, teens and adults living with lupus. This is a

their family members to come together, learn, share stories and
advice in a safe atmosphere, staffed with medical professionals and a

This month we are excited to bring you Pat Weinstein, who will speak
on lupus and bone health. As a nurse practitioner, she is conducting
research on women with lupus for her PhD and serves as a member of
the national education committee of the Lupus Foundation of America.
Pat's clinical focus had been cardiovascular nursing for over 25
years, but she became interested in lupus when her daughter was
diagnosed with this disease 5 years ago. Since then, she has focused
her doctoral studies and research on lupus. In addition to her own
research, she is assisting the investigators at the Florida Hospital
Institute of Translational Research with their work on
antiphospholipid antibodies, which are often part of lupus. As a
certified menopause practitioner, Pat is very familiar with
osteoporosis but is especially interested in it's prevention in
people with lupus of all ages.
