Since releasing his twangy 1995 debut album, Cheatin' Heart Attack,
Texas singer-songwritter Dale Watson has pleased purists who bemoan
the absence of Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson and George Jones from
country radio. Tuesday in Phoenix, Watson will sing about drinking,
cheating, and fighting for true love.
1) SPEAKING OUT- "Most of the music coming out of Nashville is not
country. It's mechancial pop music" says Watson, 41, who live lived
in Music City early in his career before moving to Austin. He took
hos first potshot at "new country" with 1995's witty Nashville Rash.
2) LIVING IT- Watson spent his teen years in Houston and honed his
skills in local honky-tonks. When he sings about a Truckin' Man, Pity
Party or the Honkie Toniest Beer Joint, this guy knows what he is
talking about.
3) BOUNCING BACK- Sadly, Watson's experince with tear-in-your-beer
tunes hit close to home in 2000, when his fiancee died in a car
crash. He descended into drink and drugs, nearly over-dosing before
checking into a mental hospital. He returned with a 2001 tribute
album to his late sweethear, ant this he released a crisp batch of
straight-ahead country tracks called Dreamland.
