Each year at this time Caffeinated Politics honors Elvis Presley who
died on August 16, 1977. In years past this blog has featured pictures
of Graceland from the air
<http://dekerivers.wordpress.com/2008/08/15/pictures-of-elvis-presleys-g\
raceland-as-seen-from-a-plane/> , and what pomade Elvis used for his
hair <http://dekerivers.wordpress.com/2006/08/16/elvis-hair/> . This
year we feature Elvis in Wisconsin, in a variety of ways. I think my
readers will enjoy this as I have video, audio from a radio interview, a
bootleg concert recording, and a most remarkle concert review from 1977.
I admit this post took me a while to research and prepare. From
Hancock, to La Crosse, Green Bay, Madison, and Milwaukee one thing is
clear. The Badger State loves Elvis!
Much like when those alive in 1963 can recall what they were doing when
they heard of the death of President Kennedy, so too can people recall
where they were when the news was reported about the death of Elvis.
People are able to make that moment stand out from 1977 because Elvis
impacted the world, and set a new rythm for both the pace of music and
society.
Back in Hancock, Wisconsin in 1977 I was 15 years old and eating supper
(dinner) with my mom and dad when the phone rang. I recall that mom got
up from the table and answered it. Aunt Evie from across the road had
called after hearing the news of Elvis Presley's death on the
national evening TV broadcast. At once our set was on, and tuned to
CBS. The broadcast was well underway, and we were sure we had missed
the story. But then Roger Mudd, who was sitting in for the vacationing
Walter Cronkite reported the shocking news from Memphis.

Phoebus Days 2009 ...Originally called Mill Creek after the
body of water next to the little waterfront settlement, the town of Phoebus has
survived through both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. In 1952, the town of
Phoebus and Elizabeth City County consolidated with the City of Hampton. Today,
Phoebus still retains much of the small town charm it began with over 200 years
ago and areas are considered historical sites. It's thriving art and antique
scene remains unparalleled by any other town of its size and magnitude.
Attractions such as The American Theatre and Fort Monroe remain a huge draw for
the area. Partially bordered by the Hampton Roads harbor and Chesapeake Bay,
Hampton, with the 344,000 sq.ft. Hampton Roads Convention Center is located in
the center of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. Hampton is the site of
America's first continuous English-speaking settlement and is home to such
visitor attractions as the Virginia Air & Space Center and Riverside IMAX ®
Theater, the Cousteau Society, Hampton History Museum, harbor tours and cruises,
Hampton University Museum, Fort Monroe, award-winning Hampton Coliseum, The
American Theatre, among others. Hampton was twice-named All-America City, the
nation's oldest and most prominent community recognition award.

WSM Radio, Keith Bilbrey, And Our Country
I really am not a curmudgeon, but after reading about the item below it is not
hard to understand why I wince and complain. And I suspect any objective reader
will feel the same.
WSM"s longtime on-air personality Keith Bilbrey had been relieved of his job.
On the air at at Nashville's 650 AM for more than three decades, He's also was
relieved of his role as announcer for the Grand Ole Opry. (Why remove him from
the famed Opry show if they only want to rid him of his mid-day time
slot…grrrr!)
A native of Cookeville, Tenn., Bilbrey's regular afternoon slot on WSM is
weekdays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reportedly, his Monday-Friday spot will be delegated
to a cyber jockey, meaning voice tracking will be utilized. The cost-saving
measure involves a DJ, somewhere, prerecording his or her on-air banter, then
merging it with songs, commercials and so forth to create a product that sounds
like a live DJ, but alas, it's only an audio illusion.
This is unconscionable!
The fact that Keith Bilbrey is an institution of country music knowledge, and is
an award winning professional broadcaster seems lost on those at WSM who think
they see a better way to make more of a profit. Ever-looking for the larger pot
of money is a mighty short-sighted way to venture through life. Removing a
voice that is recognizable to radio listeners, and Grand Ole Opry fans around
the globe thanks to the internet, is one of the most soulless acts made by a
business in many a year. It is a sad state of affairs when there is no value
placed on institutional memory, and all corporate eyes are only looking for a
bigger bottom line.
I am under no illusion that my views concerning radio or newspapers (another
huge love and now concern) are being passed by for `bigger and better' ways of
providing news and entertainment. But I will not move from my firm belief that
we are losing far more than we are gaining by making these absurd moves, such as
the removal of Keith Bilbrey. By the continual erosion of our foundations we
are not getting better as a society, only weaker. Too few understand that
concept in this greedy screwed up world, and we all pay the price.
