Dear all,

FYI... if you are interested, why not try n audition for this!

We are looking for:
2 keyboardists,
1 bass player,
2 guitar players (electric, acoustic),
1 drummer,
and 1 percussionist.

The key quality in the musician that we seek is flexibility – the music in this show spans several different musical genres. Experience in musical production is not a prerequisite.

We are also looking for:

violinists,
woodwind players (flute, clarinet),
and brass players (saxophone, trumpet, trombone).

God Bless!

Hi all,

If you are interested, come for this concert. I'll be playing the viola this round!

Finally, I've travelled from 1st, to 2nd to viola. What's next? Cello? Wahahaha..

Cheers,

Sam

Following NTU String Orchestra’s tradition to delight audiences with our ensemble of string instruments, this year’s Journey ‘08 will be no exception. Be enthralled by the playing of renowned pieces like Handel’s Water Music and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, featuring our very own student soloists. Coupled with the ambient rich presence of the performance location, the concert will leave everyone with a memorable experience—an experience through the musical journey all of us at the String Orchestra have chosen to embark on together…

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to one and all for playing for the Changing of Host Mass! A few people came up to say thank you to us... and I believe it is everyone's effort!

Despite our lack of practice (sorry I couldn't be there at 8pm!) and feelings of un-preparedness... let us just remember, like what Felix always will tell us also, that it's ok really, we play for God, out of our desire to serve Him, to share our talents with others.... So if we play well, great, if we didn't, practice more next time... but continue playing nevertheless, to give greater Glory to God!

With this, we have a break this Friday! SO GO OUT AND PARTY!

Upcoming SEPT EVENTS:

- 7th-9th September, you are welcome to attend the NOVENA Annual Procession at Novena Church. Theme is "Come Dance With me" -- I'm playing with the group on 9 September, 7:30pm - 9:45pm, for the Taize bit (8pm-ish).

- Then next Friday 12th September, we practice again. 19 September also got practice. Lhea we welcome you back!

- On 26 September I am playing viola with NTU String Orchestra - so you all wanna watch? We are doing pieces by BACH, VIVALDI Spring / Summer, Mozart Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat and Haydn... classical stuff.
And anyway, this Friday is also a break coz it's the last Friday of the Month and we ought to be at the Parish Prayer Meet at VERBIST HALL, 9:00pm - 9:45pm (which is for all parishioners every last friday of the month except many people don't know heh)!!

So either get tix for me, or make time to pray with OLPS people lah!

That's all! Seeya soon!

Cheers,
Sam

Hi all! Just some recent news... this is on our website at www.olps-ensemble.org

Go Out To The World Tour
22 & 23 August 2008, with Chris De Silva at Simei ITE Auditorium

Go Out To The World Tour

Chris De Silva Samantha and Richard had the privilege of playing at the Chris de Silva concert - Go Out to the World Tour, which was held over two evenings at the ITE East (Simei) to raise funds for Boys Town.

The repertoire for the concert consisted mostly of songs written and arranged by Chris; and the songs were well received by the audience.

The second evening was attended by His Grace, Archbishop Nicholas Chia, who went backstage during the intermission to mingle with Chris and the members from his St. Brendan Music Ministry in Los Angeles.

By the end of the evening, the audience was wanting more and Chris sportingly obliged by giving an encore - a preview to his new song, "We Belong", which will be released in his upcoming CD later this year.

Dear all,

This Friday there will be masses for the Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary (Day of Obligation).

Mass times are:
14 August 2008 (Sunset Mass) -- 6:15pm
15 August 2008 --- 6:30am, 12:30pm, 6:00pm, 8:00pm.

Therefore, I suggest if possible, go for Mass on 14 August, or 15 August 6:00pm.

Our practice will still go on normally at 8:00pm. If some of you can't make it and need to go for 8:00pm Mass, then you could leave your instrument in the room. Abi and I should be there as we'll attend the 6:00pm Mass...

If possible, bring some bread or packed dinner that night.. if not, I may also be able to drive out at 7pm-ish to get dinner.. (i will worry about parking later)...

Cheers,
Sam

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Dear all,

Thanks to one and all who supported our ensemble. We had a great time last Friday at the Taize session, using our stand lights -- playing more confidently, with more coordination. Thanks to Felix for organising this event... and thanks to you all for your efforts to come and practice every Friday.

So now, what's next? Practices continue every Friday, even though I won't be around during July --- Richard and Abi will hold the fort right? haha..

And as i was talking about... -- our next ensemble engagement (after the next Taize around september i think) ---  is on 9 November Sunday Afternoon for the World Aids Day Mass. It will give us sufficient time to practice a 10min worth of performance pieces... which we can play before the Mass starts... The theme is "Returning to Hope" --

Our new songs... Amazing grace, In Moments like these... Christ be our light... Be Not Afraid -- might just be suitable! ;)

More details of the event background below. Being slow and instrumental, our music is suitable. Let's do this!!!
We also played one song "AS JESUS SAID" yesterday at the HOLY FAM "ANGELS IN DISGUISE" - Genesis II choir 25th Anniversary music concert --- it is also suitable.
Cheers,
Sam

Btw.. if you wanna come listen next week... The concert's 2nd round goes on again this Sunday 29 June, 8:00pm, Holy Family Church. See you there? http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=14052269489

Hi guys,

Many thanks to those of you who came down to Raffles City for our first meeting. For the benefit of those who were unable to attend, this is a summary of what was discussed. The immediate thing for June is to confirm the choir and the venue:

Theme:

This year's theme is Returning to Hope. Its purpose is two-fold, first, to encourage Catholics to understand that they have a responsibility to bring God's hope and comfort to the vulnerable, including those suffering from HIV/AIDS. Second, it serves to encourage victims of HIV/AIDS to look beyond their current predicament and understand God's saving grace and hope.

Commemoration Activities:

As always, we will have the World AIDS Day Mass on 29 Nov 08 (Sat). At the moment, we are looking at two venues, Cathedral and St Joseph's Church (Victoria Street). St Mary's of the Angels was also suggested. Flaminia will check on the Cathedral's availability and I will check on St Mary's of the Angels.

The point was raised that CARE had to move into the heartlands eventually if we were to raise awareness of the AIDS issue. It was however noted that a city chuch would be a neutral and convenient space for people to come for the Mass.

For the Mass, the choir will come from Risen Christ Church. The Church where the Mass is held will provide lectors/altar boys. The celebrant will be the spiritual director (Fr Adrian Anthony) and any other priests who wish to concelebrate (offhand I can think of Fr Bill Heng and other Redemptorist priests).

Prior to the Mass, we are thinking of having a men's choir perform for 20 minutes. This will be followed by a string quartet (from OLPS orchestral ensemble) which will perform for 10 minutes before the Mass. The music will set the mood for the Mass. One of evoking remembrance but at the same time, hope.

A booth will be set up outside Mass to sell products and distribute information. Message boards will also be placed at prominent locations for people to pen their thoughts.

In addition, we are currently in talks with TTRP on them possibly putting up a performance for WAD.

World Vision is also interested in integrating their exhibition on AIDS in our programme.

Outreach activities:

A plan is currently being drawn up to engage the parishes in outreach activities. Some of the parishes which have been identified are as follows:

Holy Family
OLPS
St Peter's and Paul's
St Mary's
Risen Christ
Christ the King

During the outreach, one of the CARE Committee members should speak to the congregation on what we have been doing and inform them of the Mass.

A booth will be set up at the parishes during outreach to distribute information and sell products.

Publicity:

We have to write to the Churches to ask them to include the event in their bulletin, through the posters/flyers. Publicity should be made in the Catholic News as well.

PS: Flaminia, you might want to fwd this to Cesar as well.

Jacob

Dearest Friends,

The Toe-Tapper

One day a wise man came to a small town. He needed a place to stay so he went to the first church he found. Inside, a small group of people argued about how they could best please God.

'I'll help you,' the man said, 'but you must promise to use what I give you to glorify God.'

'Oh, we will,' the people assured him. 'We will.'

He gave each of them gifts--one was to be a pianist, another a flutist. To one he gave a cello, to another a violin, and to yet another he gave the role of toe-tapper.

The people worked long and hard to prepare a song of praise for the church. The music became more and more beautiful.

One afternoon during practice the violinist said to the pianist, 'I'm so glad I have the important job of playing the violin. I'd sure hate to be only a toe-topper.' The toe-tapper was so hurt that he went home.

The next day, when the group met to practice, nothing came together right. Finally, the flutist said, 'Without that toe-tapper here I don't know when to come in for my part.' They started over time and time again, but the music sounded terrible.

It was then that the violinist spoke up in a very sad voice. 'I'm sorry. This is all my fault. I thought I was so important that I didn't need the help of the toe-tapper. I was wrong!'

So he led the way to the toe-tapper's house and asked him to come back with them. The toe-tapper agreed and once again the music was beautiful.

Then, one Sunday, they play their music in church. God looked down and smiled. I think He even winked at the toe-tapper.

By Joan Sparks

God has a special position for each of His children. There is no one part that is more important than the other. Whether our job is to drive the church bus, to orchestrate the choir in the church service, or to preach the Gospel to the lost; our position must be looked at as a service unto the Lord and not something where we seek glorification.

Never give up in the area where God has called you, but rather to continue on and stay faithful in that task no matter how hard the enemy may try to discourage you. You are loved by the Lord greatly and only in heaven will you know the reward for being God’s faithful servant. (Jeremiah 31:3) (Matthew 25:21)

Loving U Always,

God

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 “Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

1 Corinthians 12:26-28 “And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.”

2 Timothy 4:6-8 “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.”

Hebrews 12:1-3 “let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.”

Dear Volunteers, Friends and Supporters of the Canossian  Myanmar mission,
You have heard and read about the cyclone and the disaster it has wrecked in Yangon and the Irrawaddy delta area. At the moment we have our team there (Sr. Marion and lay volunteer Selvathi) with 3 local students. Surely they must be doing what they can now to help the cyclone victims and the poor.
Our Singapore government and Catholic Church are already responding with disaster relief.
Meanwhile life has to go on for the people to bring them hope. So we are sharing about our projects with you. Please do come and give us your ideas and suggestions.

Dear All

Below is a synopsis of a four-session forum CANA is organising on Homosexuality.  Please do help to disseminate.  Thank you.

janet

o        Ten percent of the population in Singapore is homosexual.

o        Homosexuals are born that way, not made. They cannot change.

o        A homosexual marriage is just like a regular marriage, so homosexual couples deserve equal rights.

o        There is nothing wrong with two homosexual parents raising a child.

How true are these statements? Would you know how to respond to them if a Christian said these to you? Probably. But how would you respond to such statements in a secular setting? Are you able to distinguish between truth and propaganda? How would you apply the Church’s teachings on same-sex attraction in the secular world, or in your own personal conversations with friends?

To help you learn the truth and use it in the world, CANA is organizing a four-part forum in May titled “A Christian Response to Same-Sex Attraction”.

The four sessions are:

1. Homosexuality: A Christian Response

Date: Thursday, May 8

Time: 7.15pm

Leslie, a former transsexual will share the story of how he came to realize that homosexual acts are a dead end and how he found real happiness. Brother Michael Broughton, a religious educator, will share the “Do’s and Dont’s When Speaking To Persons With Homosexual Inclinations”..

2. What’s Wrong With Homosexual Acts? Part I: Viewpoints from Psychology and Societal Implications

Date: Thursday, May 15

Time: 7.15pm

Centre of Ignatian Spirituality and Counselling Director, Father Paul Lian-Kok Goh, SJ will share his viewpoint on what’s wrong with homosexual acts from his background in psychology respectively, while Mr Thomas Aqbal, an Advocate and Solicitor will explore the societal implications. Also invited is Mr Alex Au a.k.a. Yawning Bread, as he is known on the Internet. Mr Au is a founding member of Singapore’s main gay equality lobby group “People Like Us 3”..

3. What’s Wrong With Homosexual Acts? Part II: Viewpoints from Medicine and Moral Implications

Date: Thursday, May 22
Time:
7.15pm

Moral theologian Father David Garcia, OP will share his viewpoint on what’s wrong with homosexual acts morally while Dr John Hui, Immediate Past Master of the Catholic Medical Guild of Singapore shares his viewpoints from his background in medicine.

4. SSA and Hope: Resources, Support Groups, and Counselling
Date: Thursday, May 29
Time:
7.15pm

Family Life Society Therapist Catherine Tyrer will explain “What Is Counselling All About?” where she will walk participants through what takes place during a counselling session with a person with same-sex attraction. Avenues for support and resources available will also be shared.

All sessions will be held at CANA – The Catholic Centre (55 Waterloo Street, 2nd level). Please register by email at cana@.... The forum is free of charge.

Dear Friends,

My youth ministry is having a few May sessions to celebrate Pentecost. Would you be interested to join us in MAY?
It takes place on Saturday Nites.. .

We are called "Youth Arise Ministry" and we are a charismatic ministry. The sessions we're going to have in MAY is themed Re:NEW... through which we hope to enrich your faith life, empower your service, inspire you to know God more, and instill in you a renewed deeper passion for God. Then, you can live life with new zeal, new fire.

And you'll be proud to be a Catholic.. to know God... it's the most wonderful thing that could ever happen to a person. It's like giving a little child a new toyhouse.  Yet, for us, this is something that we will never grow out of, AND it is nothing the world can buy... the knowledge of the saving grace of God.

So, during the session, we will basically, share our lives..., won't be too preachy, or anything. We will just be very normal... and will share why we meet every Saturday in and out... to do this...  What made the change in us? and how it can happen for you too...

Next Saturday 3 MAY, 7:30pm is our first session, we've specially invited GERARD FRANCISCO, head of SACCRE to speak to us about having more LOVE & JOY in our lives.. i mean, how many of us fill our lives with outings, entertainment,.. movies, shows, food, drinks.. partying... everything that is very self-focused... only to find that at the end of the day, it's like a never ending quest to quench that undying thirst within?

All of us have experienced some sort of emptiness. So come and be renewed.

Anyone interested? U can drop me a msg at 96427868 so i can expect you! ;)

God Bless,
Sam

Hi all,

These are our recordings of our playing so far at our recent events. Courtesy of Richard! Thank you!

7 March - Prayer for Vocation
14 March - Taize @ OLPS
20 March - Holy Thursday @ Holy Family

Make sure you can Download within 7 Days!

It sounds pitchy at some parts... and our recordings ain't perfect... but don't you agree that we sound much better now (for those of you who played/know us from earlier before)? And we felt more confident too.

Well, as for now, the members are all busy with each of us taking breaks here and there... but we're still going on... more Taize happens in June again... and we also hope to play at other occasions and opportunities, which are still yet to be discovered.

God Bless,
Sam

I often ask myself, why are we still here - hanging on in this small ensemble? Reason? We love music. As simple as that.

Dear all,

Happy Easter, from all of us at the OLPS Ensemble!!!!

I hope you've had a good Holy Week! Here's some updates at the ensemble -- our last recent TAIZE event was on 14 March, at the St Peter & Paul Room. In a small setting once again, we played for around 6 participants for this March Taize event. The difference was obvious though - on our part at least... How so? After dedicating our February practices to our Taize pieces and sorting out our individual parts, we were more coordinated. With LIZ and William giving the cue to each song, on their guitars, we proceeded methodically and the result? More confidence, better playing... and a nicer sound for our audience.
So I want to thank all of you for your support so far. The ensemble is still an enjoyable place for me till now... Especially recently, where we were invited by the GII (Genesis II) Choir to Holy Family's events for Holy Thursday and Good Friday, where we played for some Taize/Hymns providing instrumental accompaniment. It was a splendid experience and I must say, Abi, Richard & William have all improved drastically! They dare to play out loud without too much fear ehehehe! So way to go! Of course, a good sound system is always key to being heard and appreciated by the audience.

We may have more possible 'gigs' like these in the future. Now we'll focus back on our learning repertoire...

View our updated website - www.olps-ensemble.org (Still awaiting our photos & MP3 recordings so far!)

Let me know if you have any interest to come back and play with us.... and keep spreading the word for us.. that we are still playing, still inviting and looking for musicians to share and jam and have fun together, as well as play for church (make your music talent useful for others!)

God Bless all!
Samantha
