(omni043) THE INTELLIGENCE "Boredom And Terror" CD
- In order to sonically lay it down sideways for you, Lars Finberg, the lo-fi
dandy of West Seattle, locked his front door and pressed the record button
on his favorite eight-track machine and made ten songs that could be either
ecclesiastic alien probes, Hank Williams going electro-slash, or John Lennon
making friends with a video game. Finberg, you’ll probably want to know, is
the Battlestar Galactica-esque drummer of the A-Frames, and while the
programmed beats he’s employed herein are reminiscent of that band’s
post-punk heroics, their digital drag and slur render them feathers of an
entirely different bird. Lyrically, our post-pop sarcastic Snoop Dog-substitute
slays us best on the album’s standout track, “Telephone Wires,” rhyming
“telephone wires/connecting the liars/directly to fires/that never get tired
and
on and on and on. And while it should be said that Finberg, in his
sequestered 8-track sanctuary, teems with true talent, it simply has to be
said that the band he has collected in the wake of these recordings are
veritable toolboxes of the stuff. Members of A-Frames, Pyramids, Popular
Shapes and Thee Flying Dutchmen join Finberg in his live recitations of this
stuff, and it only gets way, way better.. So now that you’ve had some time to
floss your brain with the combo of our generation and simultaneously spin
this little Ritz of a cracker in your Discman, we’re sure you’ll agree that
terror
is indeed boring and boredom is indeed terrifying. And the Intelligence are
your new People magazine.
Bettawreckonize.com (Ohio)
Lars Finberg, a member of Northwest bands the Dipers and A Frames went
into his bedroom with an eight-track, a bass, a guitar, a drum-machine, a
delay pedal, and a children’s drum kit and emerged with the aural equivalent
of a black and white, Metropolis-meets-Johnny Five style, noisy, lo-fi rock
robot programmed to play your video games, smoke your secret stash, be
cynical, and, best of all, to rock the fuck out. Still not sure about this?
Well,
I could probably describe Finberg’s outing as avant garde, but that isn’t going
to tell you anything, and I’m not entirely certain that is the case here. Simply
put, this venture may, as the title suggests, be a series of atypical, and
frankly, bizarre outings crafted by someone who has a little time on their
hands and an appetite for dismantling rock and roll truisms only to "Dr.
Frankenstein" together his own misfit cuts. For example, "Guys" juxtaposes
the rhythmic elements of British mod rock with jarring 70s punk guitar work.
"Singing Contest" saunters through a graveyard of late-70s new-wave synth
sounds as Finberg barks a tribute to Tim Taylor (Brainiac) and Johnny Lydon
(P.I.L., The Sex Pistols). "Weekends In Jail" is a wholly different animal;
this
one has the pipes of Transmissions From The Satellite Heart-era Flaming
Lips, a Monkees-style bowl cut, the guitar playing fingers of Guided by
Voices circa Bee Thousand, and the scruffy, laissez faire dress of an early
Pavement. But that’s not all, Intelligence still maintains a Velvet
Underground-like coolness throughout the track. Fans of the band will read
this and know that I haven’t yet begun to scratch the surface, but there in
lies my affinity for the disc. I’ve listened to it multiple times and still
haven’t
taken it all in. Are you up to the challenge?

Delusions Of Adequacy
Are you interested in what The Intelligence’s latest release, Boredom and
Terror, sounds like? Of course you are, otherwise you wouldn’t have read
this far. Considering you’re viewing this via the glorious World Wide Web, why
don’t we all get with the times, instead of reading my observational
meanderings of the release sounding like this band fronted by that singer or
if this band meets this band in a dark ally on ludes, and HEAR first-hand
what The Intelligence is cooking up. Go to that nifty Dragnet Records site,
click on “Songs,” and check out the free MP3 offering of “Boyfriends and
Girlfriends.” Go ahead. These words aren’t going anywhere. We’ll meet back
here when you’re done. Actually, before you return, listen to it twice. I’ll
explain later. OK, did you hear what I heard? Super infectious, distorted
bass, distorted drums, and distorted guitar as well as vocals that make The
Strokes’ Julian Casablancas sound crystal clear. And then for good measure,
the whole thing’s been fed through a few more distortion effects. From what
you can make of it, the lyrics sounded humorously tongue-in-check as well
as a bit provocative? Well, whatever you thought of “Boyfriends and
Girlfriends” is probably what you’re going to think of Boredom and Terror.
After my first listen through of Boredom and Terror, I thought that the songs
were pretty good, but they all sounded like demos someone was working out
on their new Apple GarageBand music-creating software. Kind of along the
lines of former-Polvoian, Ash Bowie’s solo project Libraness. My second
listen was a totally different experience. Sure all the songs were brief, but
that was the perfect length they needed to be. And musically there is so
much to discover in each little gem. The similarity and detail to groove of
each track is probably attributed to the fact that The Intelligence is a
one-man show powered by Lars Finberg, drummer for the A-Frames (who
seems to have really influenced his sound). Not sure if Lars is English, since
the bio says he hails from Seattle, but he definitely has vocal qualities in
the
area of The Fall’s Mark E. Smith or the Bauhaus version of Peter Murphy. To
bring it up to today’s standards, think of the Gorillaz “M1A1,” that features
Blur's Damon Albarn on vocal duty, with the lo-fi production quality of the
first
Folk Implosion album. Everything is short and sweet with Boredom and
Terror: the length of the songs, the packaging, the band’s name, and even
this review. -Frank http://adequacy.net/reviews/i/intelligence.shtml
Mesh Magazine SF
Don't be fooled by the cover of this cd, which looks like it should belong on
a
really bad punk compilation, this album is a raucous adventure through lo-fi
bleeps and bloops and emits more attitude than a hundred three chord
songs. The belligerent vocals of Intelligence frontman Lars Finburg create a
bratty overture throughout the album. With 13 tracks of nihilistic beauty each
clocking in at no more than two minutes and 21 seconds, Boredom and
Terror, offers a nice escape from, well, boredom and terror.

"Citizens Here and Abroad apply a Velvets-like drone to breathy, propulsive
pop with enough confidence to win over all aliens, outsiders, and
noncitizens." -Kimberly Chun, San Francisco Bay Guardian, May 2003
"…The result doesn't sound like a combination of [their previous] bands.
They're less heavy than Secadora but darker than Dealership, pulling
together influences from the Fall, Stereolab, Sonic Youth, and scores of
others, yet sounding like none of them. Besides playing bass, Chris G. sings
and works a tiny 1982 Casio keyboard, often in tandem with a 1970's Fresno
Unified School District xylophone. Adrienne, who also sings, toggles between
standard and baritone guitars. Dan's guitar effects are layered, and Chris W.
balances steady drums with atmospheric percussion to fill out the sound.
With an as-yet-untitled EP scheduled for release this summer, the all-star
lineup played Noisepop in February, opened for the Polyphonic Spree in April,
and is slated to play live this Friday, May 9, at SF's Hemlock Tavern with Film
School." -Malka Geffen, East Bay Express, 2003 Best of the East Bay
"Local reason to go: Citizens Here and Abroad, a foursome that combines the
best parts of Dealership and Secadora to make the kind of perfect pop this
fest was built upon."-Dan Strachota, San Francisco Weekly,2003 Noisepop

THE DIPERS
“How To Plan Successful Parties” CD (out now)/LP (due in a few weeks)
- The gaucherie that is How to Plan Successful Parties relies not on
squishy sentiments, fist-pumping party anthems, nor smoke and mirror
tricks to project it’s message and the reason for this is that
Successful Parties has no message. In fact, you will find not a single
set of instructions for arranging celebrations successful or otherwise
so don’t even look. Written democratically and without a dictionary by
Emphysema, Ricketts, and Cirrhosis (all, it should be said, past and
present members of other similarly bombastic and trashy musical outfits
such as A-Frames, the Intelligence, and Double Fudge) and recorded by
Sacramento’s stun-gun toting boy genius, Chris Woodhouse, these seven
songs ooze sexy mashed potato slush laced with shrapnel and unicorn
horns. Put these songs on after polishing off a box of bargain basement
macaroni and cheese and see if you don’t have to fight the urge to run
a nice lukewarm bath and set that bitch on repeat.

THE INTELLIGENCE
"Boredom And Terror" CD (released to stores 01/06/04 - available for
mailorder now)
- Consider, if you will, the combination of boredom and terror. (If you
won’t, get your ass-face back in the PT Cruiser you rode in on; we
don’t like your kind around here.) The combo is not just the inevitable
couplet of the current millennium, but a dream destination and a
Tupperware party that you can’t wait to escape from, too. Like salt and
pepper, Turner and Hooch, Love and Rockets, ebony and ivory, and shock
and awe, boredom and terror are unavoidable; they are culture and
culture is them. Get used to it, baby, because they’re already pretty
used to you. In order to sonically lay it down sideways for you, Lars
Finberg, the lo-fi dandy of West Seattle, locked his front door and
pressed the record button on his favorite eight-track machine and made
ten songs that could be either ecclesiastic alien probes, Hank Williams

ROCKETSHIP / TRACE
split 2 CD/LP e.p.
- ROCKETSHIP was formed in the early 90's in Sacramento, California by
Dusty Reske. Working with many other musicians, including members of
Henry's Dress, Aislers Set, Trace, Electro Group, and Holiday Flyer,
among others, Rocketship burst onto the scene with their near legendary
“Hey Hey Girl” single on Bus Stop records, and followed it with the
highly acclaimed “A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness” on Slumberland
Records in 1996. The initial 60’s styled pop layered in whirling analog
organs and bright guitars have merged with Dustin’s continuous
experimentation with electronics and production to create the wonderful
amalgamation of styles featured on this release.
- TRACE have existed for nearly a decade as an on going recording
project between 4 long time Sacramento collective, including Tim
Jacobson from the revered noise poppers Electro Group, Over the years
the band became more and more reclusive, stopped playing live almost
entirely, but continued to record an immense catalog of songs, refining
their sound with fuzz guitar, buzzing analog synths and bright pop
hooks. Briefly backed Dustin to record a series of singles and
compilation tracks (see Henry's Dress/Rocketship split 7 inch on
Slumberland).
... will be released officially on Sept. 16th, but you can order it now
from Tonevendor (http://tonevendor.com). Vinyl version is running late,
but will be ready in a couple weeks.

NEW RELEASE:
JX:ATG | CORPSE FUCKS CORPSE | GIFT OF GOATS | GET
GET GO – 4 way split 12 inch (omni034) > limited edition!!!
Four amazing art-damaged, experimental-noise influenced,
punk racketeers. Jonny X and the Groadies (JX:ATG) drop 7
tracks of hammering drum machines, haunting organs and a
string section drenched in a wall of minor-key guitars. Corpse
Fucks Corpse follows with loose, chaotic spazz-core you can
(and will) dance to. The noisey, confused and often drunken
idiocy of the Gift Of Goats translates into 6 tracks of distorted
rock & roll menace drenched in feedback chatter, hippie-fied
drum circle percussion, tape loops and samplers. The amazing
Get Get Go two-piece make for a mind-blowing closing freak out
with skull crushing drum breaks, ear piercing scream-fests, and
some of the most tweaked, heavy handed guitar riffs on the
whole record. Minimal packaging with fantastic illustrations by up
and coming Portland-by-way-of-Sacramento artist Troy Mighty
(troymighty@...). To order:

it "great punk scuzz hump...one of the great American rock

releasing a 7" single by this band sometime around August
2003, as well as a CD by A-FRAMES side project, THE DIPERS.

_________
A-Frames "A-Frames" LP (S-S/Dragnet)
Scientific strip down of the pop song, redressed with damage & disdain. 180
gram vinyl, heavy silk screened sleeve. Possible CD version on Omnibus in
the works.
review from HECKLER Magazine: "The A-Frames emerge from what seems to be a
sea of arty British post-punk imitators with a record chalked full of
stripped down, art damaged pop the way it was supposed to be played.
Growling, distorted bass and solid, robotic drumming march forward through a
terrain of scientific imagery drawn from the pages of 50¹s science fiction,
delivered by repetitious, empirical, almost emotionless vocals. The sparsely
implemented single guitar ranges from a downplayed hiss, to rampaging
angular riffs in songs like "Electric Eye" and "Test Tube Baby". The dark
anti-pop of this Seattle three-piece exceeds all expectations with a unique
Factory Records-like spin on the sounds of early Wire and The Fall."
_________
FM Knives - "Useless & Modern" CD (Moo-La-La)
Straight ahead garage rock'roll meets late 70's power-pop. If you dig the
Kids, the Boys, PVC, Devoto-era Buzzcocks, or Undertones, you'll flip for
this. 13 great songs from former members of Los Huevos, the Pretty Girls,
Nar, Karate Party...
_________
Duchess of Saigon - "Easter Queen" 7" (S-S)
Minimalist pop art duo from Sacramento. Blend The Tronics, 1/2 Japanese,
Beat Happening, The Deviants...and twist.

THE GHOST OF OMNIBUS PAST: dedicated to rarities and releases from years
past that you might have missed!
ELECTRO GROUP "Lifter" b/w "Green Machine" 7 inch single (omni018)
our first glimpse at the blistering noisepop tour-de-force known as Electro
Group. fuzzy guitars, droning bass chords, and hammering drums layered with
barely audible synths, and Tim's beautifully androgynous vocals. you can't
get these songs anywhere else, "Green Machine" still holds its place as a
live favorite.

JIM YOSHII PILE UP / WUSSOM*POW! split 7 inch (omni026)
The JIM YOSHI PILE UP have released a handful of beautiful records, with
their third album due in October on Absolutely Kosher. This dynamic San
Francisco 5-piece deliver chiming guitar melodies over rolling bass lines
and drums that build from a whisper to earth-shattering emotive bliss.
Standout, soaring vocals are icing on the cake. WUSSOM*POW!¹s mellow,
melodic, "Mountain" is a perfect compliment to the JYPU side, showcasing
their signature spacious, restrained pop and brittle female vocal harmonies.
A nice follow up to their recent "Deep Blue Hearts And Solid Hands" album
(omni026). A very elaborate two-piece vellum cover makes this a great
showpiece and collectors item. Order off our site now!

NEWS!!!
There will be a free mp3 of "Meike" by FLAKE MUSIC up on the
Abercrombie & Fitch site for the next week or two
http://www.abercrombie.com/anf/music/index.html . Magnet Magazine
recently reviewed the reissue of their 1997 debut album "When You
Land Here, Its Time To Return" and pointed to this track as the
bridge between James, Marty, Jesse, and Neal's newest venture THE
SHINS and their earlier incarnation as FLAKE MUSIC. The original
rocking Superchunk-esque version of "Meike" appeared on their very
first 7" (when they were still known as FLAKE), which came out right
before they hit the road and met up with team Omnibus for the first
time, playing a basement show at the Skyscraper band-house in Davis
with Shove, Maxiwagon, and Henry's Dress. The rest is history. This
version of "Meike" is the toned down, heartbreaking album version
that hinted at greater things to come for the Albuquerque foursome.
Here's a nice write up in Pop Matters about THE CAVE INS (now known
as "THE CERAMIC ISLES")

FLAKE MUSIC "When You Land Here, Its Time To Return" CD
back in stock!!! http://www.omnibusrecords.com/omni016.html
FEATURING ALL 4 MEMBERS OF THE SHINS!!! A fuzzy, beautiful sound
emanating from Albuquerque, New Mexico, is finding roots in Seattle.
James Mercer, the singer/guitarist responsible for this particular
sound, is the high-pitched wunderkind behind The Shins, Somersault
and the now-defunct Flake Music - three bands that have quietly
reshaped independent pop over the last four years. If you need a
direct comparison to names you might recognize, imagine this - Jeff
Magnum's craft, Stephin Merritt's prolificacy, and Mac McCaughan's
treble. But James Mercer has created a seamless legacy all his own;
his three bands have all co-existed at certain points and swapped
members back and forth, yet each line-up has a different sound
depending on who is writing the songs. With Flake Music's eventual
demise after 1997s When You Land Here, It's Time To Return (possibly
the best pop album you've never heard), James and keyboardist Marty
Crandall turned their attention to The Shins and started churning out
a long stretch of 7"s and a self-titled EP, released on Omnibus
Records out of San Francisco. (from Insound.com)
