Long time Omnibus contributor JAY HOWELL (ex. Shove, Gift Of Goats)
has  release his first book "Negatron", a collection of illustrations
and writings from various limited run zines, most of which have
previously
been available only at his art openings. The book is perfect bound,
limited to 1000 copies, and comes packaged with a professional re-run
of
his zine "Thank You", which was originally passed out at one of his
exhibitions at the Horse Cow Gallery in Sacramento CA last  year.
Jay's
artwork has recently been seen on the covers for Electro Group's

Gary Young's Hospital's "The Grey Album", and even the just released
Sexy Prison LP. He has also contributed artwork to XLR8R magazine,

Omnibus head Mark Kaiser and artist Jay Howell are starting a new,
limited edition, 12" vinyl only imprint called Mt.St.Mtn. (pronounced
"Mount
Saint Mountain"). Very little is being said about the new label, hold
your
horses and we'll give a more formal announcement later. Or maybe not.
All
we've figured so far is that all of the releases will feature the
artwork
of Jay Howell, will be limited from 200-500 copies on 12" vinyl, and
that the
first release is most likely to be that of KARATE PARTY aka: Chris
Woodhouse (member of FM KNIVES and countless others, as well as the
engineer for A-FRAMES, INTELLIGENCE, DIPERS, and recently the
COACHWHIPS, HOSPITALS, CLOROX GIRLS, etc.).

Its been a long time coming, but the LP version of "How To Plan
Successful Parties" is finally here! THE DIPERS are Erin and Lars
from the A-FRAMES/INTELLIGENCE as well as Dean from DOUBLE
FUDGE. Order direct from TONEVENDOR (http://
www.tonevendor.com/item/13031). Instead of re-hashing the bio we
sent out when the CD arrived months back, here are some great
reviews & interviews the Dipers have gotten:

Lost At Sea (www.lostatsea.net)
Waxing clever comparisons and prose in regards to The Dipers’ How
to Plan Successful Parties seems like such a waste. The album does
not emit any highly artsy elements nor will it lend itself to superlative
status in the eyes (and ears) of the greater rock clergy. There is
something about The Dipers, though, that draws one in- if only for a
brief quarter of an hour-to succumb to the lure of rock ‘n’ roll subtlety.

Really, How to Plan Successful Parties is what the essence of rock ‘n’
roll recordings is all about: short songs that abide to certain
characteristics but still retain an edge of individuality. The Dipers
certainly take heavy influence from bands of the past, but the
musical mural of which the group paints ends up so muddled that it’s
hard to tell exactly who these inspirations are. What sticks out
beyond all else is The Dipers’ completely distorted, dissonant sound
that pushes a broad feeling of relaxed-yet-intent. The music is
completely void of computer effects, samples, synthesizers, or
anything else that was not present in the earlier times of rock ‘n’ roll
(1960s-‘70s). What becomes the main focus is the early East Coast
and art punk elements of high energy and yells (often sounding as if
they are shouted through a fuzzy megaphone), combined with simple
transitions and three chord/note guitar structures. Taken in through
other senses, their style is feedback, beer bottles, black boots,
cigarettes, and drafty basement practice spaces. Most rock bands
could duplicate this group’s technical side, but few could reproduce
its essence towards rocking. That all said, there are noteworthy
tracks such as "I’m So Spun" and "Shake," which contains maybe
the most out of place lyrical usage of "C’mon and let me see you
shake your tail feather" in the words’ history. Each song spastically
leads into the next after short two-minute spurts of shouting and
blaring guitars. Before one knows it, the album has been finished
and many just like myself will not know exactly what hit them. But
sometimes, especially in the case of The Dipers, this is a good thing.

Mesh SF
There are two kinds of parties, really. The kind where this Dipers
album would cause a tremendous amount of PBR to be consumed,
raoucus dancing and other general insanity and then there's the
parties where this cd would clear the room. I'd rather attend the
former. Track 2, "Shake" is rock n roll the way is was meant to be
played: noisy & with a healthy, disregard for the conventions of
musical composition. While "It's Not Pretty" revolves around a riff
used by Sebadoh eight years ago, it's not without it's own charm,
even with it's simplistic lyrical refrain, "It's not pretty/ In the city".

INTELLIGENCE will be heading to U.K. to tour with the
COACHWHIPS in September 2004, just in time for the release of
their split 7" together on Omnibus. "Weekends In Jail" off of the
INTELLIGENCE's "Boredom And Terror" album will be featured in a
Matt Hoffman BMX special on ESPN2. The LP version of "Boredom
And Terror" is due any day now on Narnack Records (NYC). GARY
YOUNG'S HOSPITAL will be touring throughout the U.S. in support
of their new record. ELECTRO GROUP will be joining up with HELLA
as well as TIMONIUM for some tour fun in support of their hot-shit
new E.P.  MISTER METAPHOR are getting ready to tour from July
through August as their debut CD E.P. "Die On The High Road"

ELECTRO GROUP "Ummo" CD E.P. (omni041)
Northern California's noise-pop kings are back with seven blazing, feedback

drenched new songs and an added video for the title-track. Thundering,
distorted noise-pop complete with chattering guitars, buried organs &
electronics and roaring drums. By far their best recordings yet, this follow
up
tops their highly touted debut “A New Pacifica”. Electro Group have toured

the Western U.S. extensively including multiple dates at the SF NOISE POP
festival and the RADIO 1190 festival in Denver. They spent a week and a
half in 2003 touring the U.K. with Hirameka Hi-Fi. Electro Group just finished

recording a cover of Sonic Youth's "100%" with misfit ex. Pavement
drummer/engineer GARY YOUNG for an upcoming release by his band
HOSPITAL. Ian (bass) is also recording a sideproject with Zach Hill (HELLA,

CRIME IN CHOIR). Release date is May 18th, but mailorder ahead of time

CITIZENS HERE AND ABROAD
"Ghosts Of Chairs" CD (omni 044)

One might expect Bay Area indie rockers Citizens Here And Abroad to take a

cue from their peers and infuse their songs with bubblegum harmonies and
sunny guitars. But instead of Mamas and Papas-tinged psychedelia, the
Citizens take a moodier approach to their music. Murmuring guitars and
whispery lyrics shift to crescendos of redundant chords that are accented by

drummer Chris Wetherell's spare, crisp beats. On their ambitious debut
album, Ghosts of Tables And Chairs, the Citizens cull the back-catalogs of

quirky femme-rock predecessors such as Liz Phair and the Breeders: On
"The Voices," lead singer Adrienne Robillard channels Phair's monotone vocal

stylings circa Exile in Guyville—only without the sex—while "A Change of
Scene" finds Robillard & Co. laying down breathy Breeeders-esque
harmonies. Through such homages, the Citizens show brief flashes of
mischief, but Robillard's overly melodramatic delivery often overwhelms such

playful leanings. Lyrically speaking, Robillard's tendency to find the resonant

in the mundane offers a kind of Lost In Translation approach to the rock
song, hinting that unassuming packages often conceal larger, unanswerable
questions ("Should we change everything? / Rearrange the furniture / Start all

over?"). But her overwrought enunciation on tracks like "On Your Own Hand"

eventually proves tiresome. Despite Robillard's anxious intonation, Ghosts

does not lack for climactic and other feel-good moments: Dan Lowrie's
pensive strumming often builds to a fiery dénouement of cascading chords,
while brushes with bells and surf guitar hooks add a lighthearted veneer to

some songs (note the overture to "Enter The Elevator," which features
keyboardist Chris Groves fiddling with the opening bars of the 70's dance
anthem "If You Could Read My Mind.") But these glimpses of coyness all too

often don't mesh with the distressing vocals. Perhaps the Citizens should
throw some wicker chairs out the window—then their songs might fully
embrace the playfulness that is lurking just beneath the surface.

“Catchy guitar lines and dynamic shifts between slow, hushed beginnings and

orchestral crescendos give Ghosts plenty of drama, but the charm is often in

the vocals. “Microphone"'s emotional pressure comes in the wistful,
drawn-out delivery of a line like "I know it's somewhere out there if I could

only get there," in the tension between the verses' measured tones and the

chaotic counterpoint of the chorus. "In Flight Movie" slows its pace for a

gorgeously unhappy line in which the narrator's head fills with unwanted
ideas. Throughout, the album holds the pleasure of Robillard and Groves's
warm, slightly swoony harmonies, which have a romantically melancholic
quality befitting an album populated by ghosts ." Lynn Rapoport

"The ghastly, alarmlike guitar pattern that opens "The Voices," the first song

on San Francisco quartet Citizens Here and Abroad's Ghosts of Tables and
Chairs , is a good indication of the urgency that characterizes the record's

10 songs. It's an urgency that recalls overcast Sundays at home, fidgeting

and restless, hoping for something you can't place a finger on, a crush or an

obsession perhaps. Like its nine siblings, the song progresses through
thoughts and moods, refrainless; each musical and lyrical pattern is
purposeful and confident, birthing new parts that resemble their antecedents,

but certainly with agendas of their own... The group is as methodical in its

denial of the verse-chorus-verse aesthetic as it is diverse in its influences.

Singers Adrienne Robillard and Chris Groves' consistent boy/girl vocal
harmonies recall the California rock of the late '60s, while contemporary
bands, everyone from Sonic Youth to Stereolab, underpin the group's
instrumental phrasing and melodies, its upbeat rhythms and major- to

Hey all, the Gary Young's Hospital album is here (officially to be
released in stores May 4th)! Yes, that's the same legendary
drummer/producer for all of Pavement's early stuff and the
amazing "Slanted And Enchanted" album. Yes, that's the same
guy who put out a solo record on Big Cat in the 90's that landed
him a video on MTV for the song "Plantman" featuring Thurston
Moore dressed as a tree, and Gary in an astro-turf suit. Gary
recently reappeared at the 2004 SF Noise Pop festival (2
shows), will be playing SF's Mission Creek Festival, the Central
Valley Indie Festival and will be touring throughout 2004 (dates
coming together now, keep checking the Omnibus website for
updates). Gary and his Hospital recently recorded a cover of
Sonic Youth's 100% with ELECTRO GROUP backing them up,
and is working out additional recordings backed by
GRANDADDY, THURSTON MOORE and others, but we'll get into
that later...

GARY YOUNG'S HOSPITAL "The Grey Album" CD (omni042)
The irony of Gary Young's career, which historians of Pavement's
early years never fail to mention, was that Gary was a "Yes fan in
an indie band." Truth be told, Gary never did have much
exposure to indie rock prior to joining Pavement--it was uniquely
different--Gary had a bona fide crash course in indie rock.
"Slanted and Enchanted" defined a style for a decade and it
wasn't until Gary left Pavement that he truly realized what he
helped create. But the irony doesn't end there. In 1994, Gary
released his first solo album. It was titled "Gary Young's
Hospital." One might have expected it to be a return to his prog
rock heritage.   But no. Hospital was without a doubt indie rock.
Perhaps the sound had seeped in through his pours. Perhaps
Gary was an indie rocker all along. Who knows? In December
2000, Gary and Terry Blank (guitars/keyboards/samples) began
construction on Hospital's long awaited follow up record. In
December 2003, Hospital will realize it's second album on
Omnibus Records – "The Grey Album." Hospital will be touring
throughout 2004. Gary tours with Terry Blank, and a revamped
band including Duby Geurra (Bass), and J. McCrory (Keyboards).

remaining dates) just in time for Lars to head out once again for
a U.S. tour with the A-FRAMES. The ELECTRO GROUP "Ummo"
CD EP is at the plant and due for official release in late May, tour
dates with Hella and others in the works. The new Omnibus
