I know I tend to neglect this list, but I thought y'all would like to
know that Festival Radio will be Celtapalooza! for the next week or so
for St. Patrick's Day.

Re-ripping of the back catalog is rapidly approaching conclusion,
helped along greatly by the Not-Quite-Blizzard of 2008 that dumped 20.4
inches of snow in Columbus last weekend. I still have some
compilations to get through, but after that, the project will be
finished.

Also, I have upgraded my package at Live365 with more disk space, so I
should be able to have over 40 hours of music in rotation at any given
time, which will greatly expand the variety of music on the station.

Hey Greg, I dont know if you take submissions, but if
you are looking for any more original celtic/folk
Christmas music, there are two songs I think you
should hear. They're on a compilation cd that has been
featured on Lightning 100 in Nashville.

Song of Mary and O Star O'er Bethlehem

If you get a chance to listen, and like them, I'll
email you the mp3s. You're doing a great thing!

  Merry Christmas! :) erika

Ridiculous royalty rate increases are scheduled to go into effect July

Hi Greg,

I've been rediscovering some classics and enjoying
some very new CDs

I've been digging up some early Joe Ely, including his
self-titled debut and his 'Honky Tonk Masquerade'.
I've also been enjoying 'Muddy Waters at Newport
1960'. A true classic live performance.

Some newer music I've been digging include the very
latest from Jonathan Byrd, 'This Is The New That' and
Diana Jones 'My Rememberance of You'. The two have
just recorded an album together and I can't wait to
here the "Byrd-Jones" disk when it comes out.

I also really like Mexican-American singer Lila Downs'
'La Cantina'.

Cheers,
Ed

Since it seems that everyone else does it, I do it
too. The following are the albums that I just keep
coming back to this year for my own personal listening
enjoyment.

Here they are - the Top 10 albums of 2006 according to
the woodsmeister:

1) Bruce Springsteen - The Seeger Sessions: Easily the
most important folk album of the new century.
Supercharged folk songs in a folk/rock/Dixieland
melange that transcends easy categorization played by
top-flight musicians.

2) Bob Dylan - Modern Times: The best album by Dylan
in well over a decade, maybe two.

3) Ashley Maher - Flying Over Bridges: Intriguing mix
of folk/singer/songwriter/Afropop/worldbeat/jazz with
catchy, difficult syncopation and an incessant groove.
Maher's smooth voice also helps.

4) Brett Dennen - So Much More: The best pure
singer/songwriter album I heard all year. It's no
wonder that Dennen is getting all kinds of buzz and
his tunes placed on TV shows. It's all that good.

5) Diana Jones - My Remembrance of You: A little bit
country, a little bit folk, a little bit old-timey, a
little bit Iris DeMent, a little bit Gillian Welch,
but a whole lot of good. Jones' songs are first-rate,
and her voice is arresting.

6)Red Molly - Never Been to Vegas (live): This
all-female trio features tight harmonies, instrumental
chops (particularly Abbie Gardner), and well-chosen
cover tunes, and should appeal to anyone who likes the
Dixie Chicks and/or murder and death ballads.

7) Mark Erelli - Hope and Other Casualties: Erelli's
best yet features some of his best songwriting so far.
Here's what I said in April: "It's no accident that
the cover of this album is an homage to Dylan, because
this album is very Dylanesque - a little personal, a
little political. And while several songs do chronicle
Erelli's disappointment with the way things are going
(hence the title) he title of the album, he does offer
an album of pragmatic hope in "The Only Way" : 'So I'm
gonna love/And I'm gonna believe/And I'm gonna
dream/But I'm gonna roll up my sleeve/And give
everything until there's nothing left to give./That's
the only way I know how to live.'"

8) Hem - Funnel Cloud: Hem keeps expanding their
musical pallette, and the result is their best album
yet. Sally Ellyson sings with a little more passion on
this disk, and the production and arrangements are top
notch as always.

9) John Flynn - Two Wolves: Flynn is as much a
philospher as a great storyteller, and songs like the
title track about the effects of revenge on the one
seeking vengeance, and "Trust the Rope" bear this out.

10) Chuck Brodsky - Tulips for Lunch: Another great
album of story songs from a master storyteller.

Honorable Mention (in alphabetical order):

Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer - Seven is the Number
Bruce Cockburn - Life Short Call Now
Crooked Still - Shaken by a Low Sound
The Duhks - Migrations
Tommy Emmanuel - The Mystery
The Queensberry Rules - Black Dog and Other Stories
Paul Simon - Surprise
Solas: Reunion
Brooks Williams - Blues and Ballads

Honorable mention 2006 releases for Christmas:
Over the Rhine - Snow Angels
Sarah McLachlan - Wintersong
Moya Brennan - An Irish Christmas
Disclaimer: The above list is entirely subjective
based on the taste and whims of Greg Grant, aka
woodsmeister. It is not based on airplay, listener
feedback or any other scientific measurement.

Hello, folks. I'm new to this group, so I hope I'm not breaking
etiquette. We have a houseconcert series in Charm, which is in Holmes
County, and we'll be hosting Jake Armerding on November 18th. Jake's a
fabulous fiddler as well as a talented songwriter and entertaining
performer. He'll be giving a fiddle workshop at noon at the Kent State
Folk Fest and at 3:00 here in Charm, both on the 18th. We'd love to
have you join us!

For more information, you can either see Jake's myspace for samples of
his music at http://www.myspace.com/armerding or
www.sproutedacorn.blogspot.com for details about the show.

Looking forward!

Online Folk Festival Top 36 of October 2006
Why a top 36? Because listeners at the Online Folk Festival only rated
36 songs in the last month. Local Celtic band Knot Fibb'n comes in
with the top slot - another #1 rating for a Central Ohio team. October
was a slow month for new releases at the top of the charts - most of

Well, technically it never left the air - it was still
available for VIP members of Live365 only. Now, it's
available for everyone. I've paid for three months of
Christmas programming, so from now through January 23,
Online Folk Christmas will be playing a freeform blend
of folk and related Christmas music: traditional,
bluegrass, singer/songwriter, Celtic, cajun, steel
drum, world folk and more.

Even as a VIP station with limited access, the station
has averaged about an hour per day of listenership
from someone somewhere in the world, so I know that
there are those out there who like to listen to
Christmas music year-round.

So, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow (sorry,
Buffalo).

The Online Folk Festival Discussion list is designed to be a place to
discuss the Online Folk Festival and the artists that are heard
there. In addition, please feel free to discuss folk musicians and
artists. Tell us your favorites, review an album, post a tour
schedule, etc.

I hope this will become a folk music community.

But, please play nice. I don't want to have to ban you, but I will be
assertive if any flame wars develop.
